Title: grinding cinnamon sticks
Post by: versaceyoyo on March 25, 2010, 11:42:00 am
The other day I tried to grind a cinnamon stick expecting it to be pulverised - instead it ended up in lots of little shards which were useless.  I did only try to grind one and I read in another thread that ILB said she had better luck with two sticks.

Is grinding cinnamon asking just a little too much of TMX or should I be able to get a nice fine powder?

I've never had a problem though admit I've never tried only one stick, usually grind 4 sticks about 10cm long each.  Two minutes at speed 10 with a break half way through to scrape down gives really fine powder; perfect. I also spread a sheet of clingfilm over the bowl/under the lid as it's easier to knock back all the powder that sticks under the lid.

i find with spices you need enough to do it properly. also don't try grinding them with garlic or ginger, or when the tmx bowl isn't bone dry

I drop them in on the running blades at  speed  8 - same with nutmeg, star anise, cloves, etc.

Agree with andie on this - for small amounts it is good to drop them onto fast blades.  Less likely to get caught up underneath,
