Well I had my Varoma party on Friday and since this day I cannot find the cook book that comes with the TM. So I will be relying on this site now till it decides to surface lol, I think it may have accidentally went with the TM demonstrator and am waiting for reply ???
I have made the avocado dip that 'I love Bimby' posted in September, to take when I go to my friends house shortly while all the kids go for a swim. The avocado dip was a hit with my kids, now lets see when I make it next if hubby will eat it (he doesn't like avocado). ;D
-
Mymac2009, I hardly know a man who does like avocado - it seems to be a woman thing. All the more for us ;D ;D ;D
-
mine doesn't either!
yep it sounds like the demonstrator must have taken it by accident, oops! still i must admit there's only handful of recipes i use out of the EDC 8)
-
Me too Karen but if you need any help until you find the book mymac2009, just ask us. A lot of the basic stuff that is handy is in that book - I still refer to it for lots of things.
-
I thought my DH was the only one who didn't like avocado. Glad to read that others don't too.
Mymac 2009, I'm sure everyone here will help until you receive your book back.
-
Thank you ladies, yes I am still learning to use the TM so it never far away so I can use it as a reference untill I am more confident. I am in such a cooking mood, so I think I might cook up a storm tonight so when my sister and her family come over there is something for everyone. :D
The DD and DS loved the banana and walnut bread, the vegetarian sausage rolls, the avocado dip, my variation to the bolognaise sauce, the home made pizzas. This weeks attempt is making little DD baby food her 1st solids.

I'm very surprised that men there don't like avocado. Guys here love guacamole and vie with each other producing recipes that are either hotter (with hot chiles) or more unique (with unusual ingredients) and one of my Mexican neighbors relies on her husband to prepare huge bowls of it for their big parties. His recipe is a secret and I would love to have it because it is the best I have ever tasted.
I know he uses only Haas avocados and Roma tomatoes and only brown onions, but the type of chiles (not very hot) are carefully hidden as are the remaining ingredients.

I LOVE avocado - in any form, just with vinaigrette and S&P is brilliant. Maybe I'm a girl :o :o :o
mymac2009 - do a search for "Full Steam Ahead" - include the " " inverted commas and you will find a number of recipes that have been roughly converted from the Italian book - but they are essentially correct and the same as our book.
-
Oh thank you I will have a look. Yes the demonstrator lady has my book lol yay for me at least I know where it is. Men they are funny creatures, my boys (DS and DH) love spinich especially in canelloni, but DH has been working away and now likes spinich pizza's. If I persist my DH will eventually like avocado, when my DS was a few yrs old and it was just us in the day once week I used to make chicken, cheese and avocado toasted sandwiches and a milkshake as our special time, so now he likes it but only in a few things.
And as far as canalloni, I get hounded for it if I haven't made it for a while. Once I have moved house and have a free moment I will add it on this forum. I use a different cheese and am particular on the diced tomatoes I use.

Is there anything you don't like Thermomixer ???
I get avocado into my DH with this drink posted by Allina which is from a SkinnyChef.com
1/2 ripe avocado
2 tblspns brown sugar
2 tblspons cocoa powder
1 tspn vanilla extract
200mls milk (I use this quantity then thin it down with more milk until I get the consistency I want)
Place all ingredients into the TM bowl. Blend for 30 secs on speed 9.
Serve over ice.
Variations - add 1/2 banana for extra flavour and vitamins
Add 6-8 blocks of ice for an iced chocolate feel.
After he drank it, I told him it had avocado in it. He had no idea.
-
Has anyone tried Avocado as a pudding? I don't have the quantities but basically you puree a couple of ripe avocados and fold them into whipped cream and add sugar and lime juice to taste.
The fun is when you ask people to guess what is in it ;)
-
LOL JD - chocolate is about the only thing that I wouldn't walk over broken glass to get to. But I even get excited by silver beet cooked well. i love broccoli and save the stems to peel and dice and make into a curry, sorry, I digress.
Haven't tried avocado pudding - sounds interesting. there is an avocado and ginger ice cream somewhere on here.

Cheryl's Avocado and Ginger Ice-Cream (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=433.0)
My mum occasionally made avocado ice-cream, a long time ago. No idea whether I liked it or not, but if it works in a chocolate ice-cream, then no reason why it wouldn't be nice.
Judy, maybe you could morph Jo's Banana-Nut Ice-cream into something with Avocado, using your milkshake recipe for some ideas of quantities? That would trip out your DH.
-
Yes, I'm sure that would work cathy. It is such a smooth little critter, you could hide it anywhere.
-
My ex husband refused to eat avocado and tomato even though his parents owned a rare fruits farm (with around 7 varieties of avocado at least from memory) when I met him.
His mother could never work out how I managed to get him to eat both... :D
My 15yo DS will devour them by the truckload... :-))
My grandmother used to make a very yummy banana and avocado icecream too. ;D

Any chance you can convert that banana & avocado ice-cream recipe Ceejay (if it is still around)?

Unfortunately I don't have it JD but I remember it came from The Complete Avocado Cookbook by Christine Heaslip published in the 1980s. Gran passed away in 1989 so I haven't seen it since. :-[ Perhaps it's available at your local library. I tried checking our local library catalogue but it's under maintenance until tomorrow sometime.
There seem to be a few recipes online though:

Hope that helps. ;D

Thanks ceejay, the second one sounds easy enough - I don't have an ice-cream maker to try the first one.
-
I've prepared several recipes from this site. I haven't converted any for the TMX, but most are very simple.
The mousse and the avocado lime pie are delicious and everyone loves the avocado tortilla soup. (Those are corn tortilla chips)

Thanks Andie, some nice recipes there - at least 6 that I would try. Now to find some cheap avocados!
-
I know avocado's are so expensive at the moment!!!! There like $3.95, well they were last week.
-
I was shocked to see them at $2.95 on Monday - BARGIN :D :D :-))
-
Will have to remember to try these when it's avocado season.

Oh my Buddha that is expensive. Where do you live? I was lucky the other day to get 5 beautiful large Avocados for only $2.50. Yikes I would go without for sure.

I'm hanging out for some cheap ones too now that I have all these recipes I want to try. 50 cents each Gretchen :o :o lucky you. Saw them for $1.98 so bought 1 to try an ice-cream recipe but now I have to wait for it to ripen. Is there a quick way to do this, like stick it in a paper bag with a banana or something. You can rarely find one in a shop and eat it that day so you have to plan ahead when you are cooking to make sure you get them early enough. Do you know if they can be mashed with lemon juice and frozen Gretchen just in case I do see some out cheap one day. :-* :-*
-
JD I have never had to freeze Avocados but I don't see why not. I would pop the seed in to the mix as I usually do. You can try the paper bag trick as I am sure it would work but I can almost always buy them ready to eat so not sure about how long it would take as opposed to waiting. I am now thinking of sheeps milk cheese and avocado for dinner.

Put the avocado in a paper back with an apple. A banana works okay but just the banana skin will work even better.
-
Thanks girls. :-* :-*
-
i am getting 6 avocados for $2 at the moment here.
also, our 2 trees are loaded aswell.

Leaving the stone in avocado dips keeps it from going brown for quite a while, so I'd try freezing the avocado with the stone. It's a good alternative to lemon juice as it doesn't change the flavour. And DH is allergic to citrus, so that's my only option.

I've had good results with a method shows on one of the food network shows.
He sprayed both an avocado cut in halve and a bowl of guacamole with light olive oil but said any neutral oil spray would work because the thin coating of oil would keep the surface of the avocado from exposure to air. It is virtually tasteless and does not alter the composition of the dip. The avocado half was then wrapped in plastic wrap and the bowl was covered with it.
My local health food store carries a product to spray on cut avocados and etc., but it is essentially the same thing. (But more expensive! :D)
Restaurants that have salad bars use a spray made with ascorbic acid but that does leave a faint flavor (I can taste it) but many people do not sense it at all.
If you've ever wondered how the slices of avocado that are so beautifully displayed on fancy buffet tables are maintained so beautifully, one of the above procedures was used.
I don't know if they are available in Australia but I have sprayers that are made specifically for oils, olive, etc., however, I note that some of you make soap and the stores that sell soap supplies also have sprayers that are usually food-grade plastic, that can be used for culinary oils and are cheaper than the ones I get.
oil sprayers (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_17?url=search-alias%3Dgarden&field-keywords=olive+oil+sprayer+mister&sprefix=olive+oil+sprayer)

Thanks for the link re oil sprayers Andisenji. I bought my mum, my sister (and myself) a Prepara Oil Mister for Christmas. It's fantastic. You can flavour the oil if you want to. I bought them from a Robins Kitchen store, but paid $39.95 each. So $19.95 on Amazon is an absolute bargain.
-
Thanks for the oil spray on the avocados too Andie - I found 4 for $5 this morning so grabbed them.
-
I'm in the US and don't know if they are available elsewhere but I am sure there is something comparable.
Last evening I checked with my friend who owns a candle/soap/aromatherapy shop and she says the oil misters she sells for applying body oils are indeed food-grade plastics throughout. She also told me that she sells a lot of the little purse-sized ones to women who want to make their own pepper spray because it is a lot cheaper than buying the commercial ones, as well as safer as a liquid spray does not produce a "toxic" cloud as the commercial ones do.
-
Brilliant idea andie! Wonder if we have the smaller size in Oz... :)
-
Thanks for the tips, these will come in handy ;D
