Title: Buying whole grain for bread making
Post by: Loy Loy on February 20, 2010, 04:53:23 am
I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for purchasing whole grains to mill in the Thermomix.  I used to have a whisper mill and ground my own flour.  When all my children were at home I used to buy in bulk from the grain merchants (40kg sack) and store it in a plastic rubbish bin with Toilet rolls in the bottom - three whole bulbs of garlic resting on the top would keep the bugs out, pop the lid on, and it lasted for ages.  Now I just want to buy a small amount but can't find out where to buy it.  Does anyone know a good place around Melbourne or on line.  Thanks

Not sure about Melbourne but here in Perth there are lots of continental shops where they have dried beans and grains in sacks that you scoop out what you want. Pay by the kilo. I bought wheat and other dried beans from one. Ask your consultant who sold you the TMX

I buy mine through Demeter Farm Mill (http://www.demeterfarmmill.com.au/).  I'm in a co-op that orders twice a year.  They're in NSW.  If you can get a group together and order up to $1000 worth, the freight's heaps cheaper.

Not sure Loy Loy - would pay to contact your consultant as I am sure the Melb boss would have some leads.

Loy Loy I got a 5kg bag from a farm shop in Heatherton.  Nick's Farm 212 Old Dandenong Rd, Heatherton.  Not organic - I use it for demo's.  For organic grains I go to Sunnybrook in North Rd Ormond.  Hope that helps...........

A friend showed up yesterday from up north with a nice big bag of red fife whole wheat and some oats from the organic farm on Manitoulin Island where she lives.  Good breads in my future!

Chocdoc if you need more red fife you have to come and see me or let me know  :). It's growing here at our local farm.
