Title: Child friendly meals
Post by: Thermomixer on February 01, 2010, 11:04:55 pm
Can somebody (with children !!!!) please help ?  Think we have had similar threads before - but time is limited for me to search properly.  :(

Oops how dyslexic is that.  I don't know what they call themselves here haven't lived here that long.  I did mean to say Ballaratarians.  Thanks Thermomixer will try with the Consultant.  DH and DC's are loving all the yummy food.  I'm still struggling with main meals though as i want to cook more but have some fussy children who are a bit plain.  Any ideas?

Ciao
Nicole

My kids used to like plain food but are getting used to new flavours now.

You could always try steaming your vegies while cooking rice or potato in the strainer and a sauce in the bowl. That way its nearly one pot cooking - apart from the meat and you get a nice sauce to go with it which is optional for the kids.
Sauces you could use are the meat loaf sauces (EDC), or there are a couple of good ones in the varoma book. The mustard brandy chicken sauce, baf65's creamy chicken and vegie in the varoma has a good cheesy sauce and there are lots more in recipes on here.

My kids love the Chinese stir fried vegies in the EDC book. This is good for kids as you can add the flavours that they like. Honey soy is the favorite in our house.

Hope that helps.

My 3 year old (fussy) and 20m (eats anything) old both love the EDC lasagne, EDC Butter Chicken, EDC Pasta E Fagioli, EDC Risotto.

Of course there is the pizza dough in the EDC with your kid's favourite toppings - what kid doesn't like pizza.
ILB's Honey Soy stir-fry chicken winglets are popular, Chookies Chow Mein is loved by any child I know and Bron's steamed meatballs in tomato sauce seems a popular one too - these 3 are in mains on the forum.

There are a few simple pasta dishes in EDC which my two little dd's like - as long as I skip the chilli.  Can't remember the exact names but...

Pasta with Tuna - delicious - this is a regular.  Last night I made it with mince.  The flavours are very simple, so can build from there.  And can hide lots of vegies if you chop them up and saute them with the onion.

Bolognaise Sauce - sauce section - ever child I know loves spaghetti bolognaise.

Pasta with beans - leave out the chilli, and this has very simple flavours.

And my daughter ate eggs for the first time ever when I made Dr Seuss eggs.  I'd tried scrambled eggs and french toast lots of times but was never eaten.  But she loved the special eggs that Dr Seuss made just for her.  While it's not really a main meal, add fried bacon, sausages, salad, anything you can think of, and it's a good start.

My son (4 yo) also loves fried rice, pizza, spaghetti bolognese & pasta with tuna.  Also the Moroccan Lamb recipe on the forums, the butter chicken (from EDC), risotto, fish and veg steamed in the varoma (made it yesterday with a bit of garlic, ginger, coriander and coconut milk, wrapped in baking paper).

Bron's meatballs also was the first thing that came to my mind. Over garlic rice or pasta that kids have helped make - always a hit!  ;)

Freaked when I saw the hand-rolled pasta - BUT - yes, if you can get the kids to help make the snakes etc - good idea.

Oh, my kids and their friends all LOVE helping make pasta!  They fight over who gets to turn the handle on the roller!  They also love making pizza and breadrolls (in animal shapes, or with faces on them!)  :D

We don't have a pasta maker but make it just as Thermomixer suggested - hand rolled and sliced up. DD8 unravels the sliced pieces and tosses them in flour so I don't have to stop. It really is a great help.  ;) :)

popped some pills so all is good.  Yeah - freaked out when I thought you were asking mums to spend all day making pasta. BUT, if it is a team activity and the children take on some ownership .....  (we can do it !!!!  ;D ;D ;D ) .... then it is a great idea - and they love making shapes.

I don't have kids and so keep forgetting that you can make good use of slave labour  ;) ;D   :o :o :o
