Mixed Dahl:
Serves 4:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup split peas
1/2 cup split mung beans (I used green lentils)
Rinse and soak these for half an hour in enough water to cover.
1/2 cup red lentils - rinse and leave
2 medium brown onions, cut into chunks
4 cloves garlic, peeled
Drop onto blades at speed 4 to chop.
Add:
2 Tbsp ghee
3 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp onion seeds (I used Nigella seeds, different flavour, but I didn't have onion seeds)
Heat on Varoma and cook for 5 minutes or so, until onion is starting to change colour.
Add:
1 Tbsp grated ginger
1 Tbsp ground cumin
3 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground turmeric
1 tsp chilli powder
Cook on Varoma/speed 3 for one minute or so.
Add:
2 x 400g cans tomatoes or 1 x 800g can
2 1/2 cups water
1 Tbsp vege stock (this is a guess, as I used some made up vege stock that I already had)
1/2 tsp black pepper
beans, lentils, peas
Cook at 80/speed 3 for around half an hour or more or until red lentils are tender.
Just before serving add:
1/3 cup cream
2 Tbsp finely chopped fresh coriander (optional)
This quantity is the maximum that TMX can hold, it wouldn't hurt to reduce this amount by 1/3.

Great one MJ - just made a curry for the chefs at our local for their staff meal and the spice mix was almost the same as yours. So I know it will be good :-* :-*

Next time I make this, I'd only do half. There's a heck of a lot of dahl in this recipe!
I always thought onion seeds and nigella seeds were the same thing - kalonji seeds. But, at Loose Produce, they were two different items.

Think Ian Hemphill from Herbies has some info in his books - there are a few names that get mixed up and intechanged - will look in his book
BTW - might be making sooner rather than later as MrsT decided last night that we should go vegetarian for a while - saw an advert on TV - but we have a freezer half full of meat !!!!

Thank you for this recipe which we found really deicious--one of the nicest dahls I've had. I used red lentils, split mung dahl and green split peas. I soaked the mung beans and split peas for about 2 hours, and next time I would try and soak the split peas even longer as they were stil abit chewy. I used 700g bottle of passata and 2 1/2 cups of water and the mixture was very thick--I needed to use speed 2 to really get it moving.
Loved the spice combination--will make again for sure.

I made it today (on the stove top because my TMX was busy!) and it is sensational, so thanks, meganjane for posting it in the first place. I couldn't find onion seeds (the Indian grocer hadn't opened when I popped down there yesterday morning) and used oil instead of ghee but it still turned out totally delicious, although I think the addition of onion seeds would definitely give it an extra boost so I must get my hands on some. Didn't add the cream, due to DH's lactose intolerance, but I think that would also be a great addition. Although it's got a long list of ingredients it is quick and easy, but you must remember to rinse and pre-soak the split peas / beans / lentils otherwise it will take an age to cook..

Marina, I left out the cream too, just forgot, by the time the lentils were cooked, very nice without cream, might add it next time, or might not!
