Title: Darling Downs Co-op / Shopping Tips
Post by: cathy79 on November 13, 2009, 09:50:57 pm
To all Darling Downs Members - there are a few of us now, so maybe we should make this formal. ;D

I've emerged from exams, so ready to take this seriously.  My plan is to do a little spreadsheet of where I've bought what so far so I can compare prices.  So I was thinking that I'd attach it to this forum, and other DD members can have a look.  If you've found a better price, add it to the list.

I've also made some bulk inquiries but haven't compiled those prices.  So I'll do the same thing.  And we can formally start a co-op where it makes a difference in price.

Susan and Suzanne, I know you're interested at least, and I think there may be others.  Let's use our bulk buying powers.

Okay, here is my compiled information so far.  If anyone has something to add ie better price or supplier, let me know and I'll update for everyone.  There are also a few websites which look good (thanks Quirky Jo).

cathy, you've done a great job. interesting some price differences ( eg cashews) i suppose that is because some are organic.

i did go into woollies at the ridge today and they were selling lindt choc blocks for $1.74, i bought a few ready for some choc goodies for xmas, just got to wait to TMX

phone my consultant today and he said mid next week. makes me laugh really, although i knew it would take a while for delivery, i don't know why they put it on the paperwork.. immediate delivery. DH is not impressed  :-[

You've done well, Cathy!  I spent most of the morning on the internet trying to find Rapadura-sweetened dark choc chips!!!  (Rapunzel make them, and I bought some at a Cairns co-op store, but there's got to be somewhere I can get them bulk!! hmmm....)  Let me know if you find any!

That's awfully specific, considering the trouble I've had just getting bulk Rapadura.  Since you make your own chocolate, couldn't you make little choc chips from your homemade chocolate?  Or at least the right size choc pieces?

was this directed at me, if so forgive me for being thick because i don't get what you are saying.. all i was saying is lindt choc blocks ( ie 100g) are selling for $1.74. i just notice alot of tmx recipe require conveture(sp) choc and i was thinking these would suffice.

I usually would just chop up my own chocolate, but I don't know how they'd go cooked in choc chip cookies - I think they'd melt too much... have to try it.  :)

Sorry Lisa, no I was refering to how Quirky Jo could make chocolate chips.  Sometimes these busy posts get a bit confusing!

I just blitz the dark chocolate blocks and use those instead of chips in my cooking.  Always thought the Rapunzel was cooking choc!  :D

I've tried buying bulk rapadura choc chips online too Jo without much success.  Paying almost $10 (plus postage) for 100g just seemed a bit too excessive.  I have thought about chopping up Black and Greens organic cooking chocolate and seeing if that holds it's form in a cookie?  ???

Wow Chelsea, it's pretty hard to justify that price.  Give your idea a go, no matter what happens they'll be edible!

This is great!! Thanks for putting in your time on this Cathy. I don't get off the farm too often to get to Toowoomba but have family in Toowoomba interested in buying TMX and eating healthy so will email them this thread.  ;)

I'm in heaven - I accidentally found a shop today that I didn't know existed.  It's not in the yellow pages, at least not under organic.

Organic Food Market
124 Campbell Street
Toowoomba
www.toowoombaorganicfood.com
07 4639 1811

It is a gorgeous little shop, beautifully lit and laid out, and full of products that the other local shops don't have, including bulk bins you can use to fill your own containers.  And it's locally owned, not a chain store.  Large fridge full of organic dairy, cheese, yoghurt, dips etc, lots of nice looking fruit and vegies, meat, fresh bread, eggs...I'd better stop listing everything.

All the prices are on the website, so going to have a look now and update my price list for what I use.  But check it out for what you might want!

Jo - I did ask about Rapadura Sweetened Chocolate Chips - they don't stock but might be able to get them.

Update - the website has a complete list of what they stock, but no prices.  So will have to do it the hard way (sigh emoticon).

Cathy - is that the shop opposite Coco's fruit store? That's where i got a huge bag of whole grain wheat for my demo's.  ;)
Lisa - it looks like all the storms went around us - did you get any??  :-\

Nay Nay.. the organic store is in a lovely tree lined street ( campbell), i think you are thinking of Natural Food Market, next to Paynes meat store.

we got about 2 drops of rain and looking at the satellite can't see any more coming soon.

BTW one of my toowoomba friends has just ordered a tmx, just need to get her on the forum so she can add her to the location poll

Yes, the "new" one I found was in Campbell Street.  They also have a cafe with homemade cakes etc and coffees.  We got thunder but no rain.

BTW - my mum and I are organising a casual TMX themed get together soon for anyone who is interested, most likely on an evening, just trying to confirm a date.  The idea is to swap some favourite recipes, tips etc.  Neither of us are consultants, just avid users keen to exploit (share) the knowledge of fellow owners  ;).

Cathy that sounds like a wonderful idea. Our first get together was really fun and of course we're having a larger one next week over here in King's Park.  They are wonderful for putting faces to names.

Wow.  Who else is sweltering??? I am about to go over to the meal planning thread to get some ideas for dinner because right now I'd happily take a cold liquid diet!!!!

Did a drive by the other night of the Organic food place... will go down tomorrow for a squiz when I can!  Is there anything in particular you wanted prices on Cathy?

With bulk buying is there a particular material anyone would recommend to store dry stuff in (flour etc).  I don't think Cathy or myself really thought the bulk buying through with the sugar and I don't think she has any spare containers now!  I was thinking calico but not really sure that would be helpful and then I wouldn't want it to leak... hmmm maybe pul lmao I can have nappies for my bulk stuff (ceejay & meagan might see the funny side of that) lol

We've got the aircons going (as usual).  This summers power bill will be a killer.
It would be great to get price comparisons of what I've listed on my spreadsheet.  They're the main things I buy at the moment.
Yes, any storage ideas would be wonderful.  My pantry is exploding!  Might have to save for some more tupperware...

Yeah we've got our one going and it's in the front room so it's basically cooling the kitchen (zucchini brownies on to cook).  H is asleep and S is overtired and stroppy and generally causing dramas!

Will have a looksee... I don't have a printer and when DH gets back from work I won't have a computer as he's taking it back with him.

Put some more water in the icetrays and am looking at sharpening my blades and cooling down later!

The coleslaw in the EDC came out quite well and we had that last night for dinner with chicken in yoghurt  Haven't made it to the shops to get maple syrup yet but I definitely will be!!!!  How long did the icecream actually last? :)

We haven't "officially" tried it yet, just little tastes off the side.  I think I'm scared that we'll eat the whole lot in one sitting if we crack it open.

Oh wow lots more willpower than I'd have!!! heehee

I sort of have a self saucing brownie now... I think I had the oven on too high or something as the outsides were starting to burn but still a bit liquidy in the centre.  Tastes okay still!

Just downloaded the AFA program... going to reboot now to see how it looks.

Can I suggest you inquire at http://www.trumps.com.au/main.htm and ask for a price list? They are in Brisbane, but I've had a price list from them in the past and remember them being quite competitive and they do larger quantities. Freight to Tmba, or a monthly collection by one of us in the Darling Downs might still be cheaper :)

I think I checked out Trumps website and maybe the prices weren't too hot?  But can't remember at the moment.  Will have to have another look.

I was in a rush the other day (pouring rain) and bought a heap of stuff from budget health including cacao powder.... I had to go to neil street for a few items they didn't have available and if I'm not mistaken there was like a $6 difference in price for the cacao (neil street cheaper).  argh! lol Well, know better for next time!

Were you still doing a get together Cathy? I imagine it'd be in the new year now?

Dropping in to let you know that I'm having a demo in a couple of weeks. I have a cyber friend in Bris who's a demonstrator, and I chose to buy through her in the end. I've got a few friends here interested in seeing a proper demo ;) and I thought I'd offer a blanket invite to you locals too, even though you have a TMX already :p You may have friends/family who are interested in going to a good demo :)

It's Tuesday 9th Feb, around 7pm but I'll confirm that (may be 7:30pm). I'm in Mount Lofty.

Hi Snoozie,
You asked about keeping bulk goods. I have a spare very old (30+  years) freezer in my garage and I keep all my flour and powdery spices in it. I also use it to freeze he bread I make. When I take the flour out to make the bread I either leave it lying in the sun to warm up or warm it in Thermomix - 50C for about 5 mins on speed 2 - just so the flour is moving in the bowl. I find this makes the bread very light. It is so hot here that the dough rises in no time at all.
Regards
Shayla in Cape Town

It was fab :) Seven women came, four of whom want one with a passion but are figuring out how to pay for it - you know how it is! Another one really wants one but is disciplined enough to say 'I can't spend that on a kitchen appliance' so probably never will. Not sure about the other two who I don't know well. I hope something comes of it for Kara, a cyber friend/demonstrator who traveled about 2 hours (each way) in rain and fog to come and do this. However I'm thinking about being a demonstrator myself, knowing our Tmba guy is leaving and there's no competition in town at all. Unless you know of any other nearby demonstrators.... I only know of Brisbane and south Burnett folk now. I just wonder how much work there would be as my life has recently cranked up two gears and it's set to go crazy from March onwards.

Have you started / done the training?  Do we have a Toowoomba consultant now / soon?  My sister is borrowing my mum's for a few weeks as a trial, so I may have a sale for someone......

Not yet Cathy, I decided to leave it a couple of months until my uni exam period because of the pressures to make x sales in the first two months. I'd rather it coincided with my uni holiday and the beginning of next term, just so that I can commit more in my learning phase. I hope to be doing the training this time in May :-)

hi tba girls.  i'm a fellow toowoomba-ite.  just got my machine on the weekend.  i read with interest the experience the toowoomba people had had with demos (which i am grateful for  ;)).

my mother-in-law (who has also purchased - she had an original TMX) is having a delivery demo on 28 march if you know of anyone else who is looking to take a peak at the TMX in action.

When we lived at Gowrie J, we used to go to his house at Cotswold Hills every Saturday to buy direct. He always did the PCYC markets on Sunday, having driven all over the region every Friday to collect the produce himself from farms. So I guess we got in early on Saturday ;) while passing by his area, and avoiding having to get up early to head to the markets on Sunday  :P The quality was always excellent as everything is super-fresh, and prices were good too. We moved north in 2006 and haven't bought from him since then, including since coming back. He only set up that delivery store thing since we left. I didn't think it was open to the public? I was under the impression that it's a warehouse HQ kinda set-up, from where he coordinates deliveries. I remember him (Murray) telling me that it wasn't really meant to be a shop to walk in to, but that was in March (ish) 2006 when we came back to visit. Don't know where he's at now.

You can definitely walk in and just shop - they have little baskets for you!  It is good - the fruit and veg were fresh and I got some beautiful little pink ladies which were the same price as Millers Fruit Barn (not organic at Millers though).  He stocks all the Barambah lines (price eg milk is $5 for 2 litres).  Also stocks Ivyhome and Cleo's 'bath' mllk.

Probably not as big a selection as Campbell Street but if you are out the airport way, it could be convenient for most staples.

To find it have a look at his website http://www.mrorganic.net.au/contact.aspx (http://www.mrorganic.net.au/contact.aspx)

Yes it's definitely open to the public as that's where I go (and got the rapadura from ages ago).

You can also have it delivered for $5.60 in Toowoomba which is something we are seriously considering with us being so busy.  The thought of having it delivered to our door and knowing each week we'd have a new stock of fruit and veges in the house would be great!!

We are still finessing how much we need to get through a week (some things I overestimate and somethings I underestimate) but once we've got that down pat we'll set up a standing order and not worry about it until I need extras to make stock etc.

I like the Campbell Street one to get anything I haven't been able to get from Mr O. and then the Budget Health Food Shop.  The budget place is where I last got all my seeds, nuts etc from but I'm going to give Campbell St a go for that as they have dispensers.

Is there currently a co-op running in the region?
