Title: What to do with Loquats?
Post by: Dublin Girl in Oz on November 08, 2009, 10:13:56 am
Hi Fellow Thermomixers
My very kind neighbour has given me a basket of loquats (a small yellow stone fruit).
Does anyone have any ideas/recipes I could use please?

Thanks in advance!

Yes Karen that's what they are!  No wonder I couldn't find anything when I Googled!  Any ideas on what to use them for?

Sylvia

Hi Sylvia
Loquats (I pronounce it "low-cuts" - may be just my aussie accent!!) and cumquats are different I think.  This site had a pic of the loquat fruit and I think you could use it as you would other stone fruit - jams, preserves, etc    http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph17.htm.  We always just ate them raw as kids (peeled the skin off as it can be tough, eat the flesh and chuck the seeds).

I have some very fond memories of childhood days spent sitting high up in the loquat tree eating the fruit and spitting the (huge) seeds!  I think that they would be too labour intensive to do anything else with!!

They are likely to be loquats if they are a stone fruit -one hard dark stone inside, whereas cumquats have lots of little pips like lemons/oranges.

The main recipe that I have seen for loquats is jelly, but there are recipes available http://www.loquatworld.com/LoquatRecipes.html (http://www.loquatworld.com/LoquatRecipes.html) - but many just eat them as they are.

Lucky you with lots of loquats. I've only ever heard of people eating them as is.

Lucky you.  I just love them.  Takes me back to my childhood just thinking about them.

They are really nice stewed and served cold. They are better peeled this way.

Have had the jam before.  ;) They do go 'off' pretty quickly after being picked.  :)

It was a reasonably fair deal Thermomixer. If he could have an old car to do up I could have a TMX. BUT he now has 2 old cars.!
The second one is a recognisable pile of rust at the moment, but I love it.

Not yet. He has a third car lined up, (unrestored) so that may be the time for the second bowl. ;)  I used to have ideas of an outside area with ferns and lovely settings. Instead it has 2 old cars, one completely unrestored, and all the junkpieces that are essential to it and the tools. Fortunately the house has 2 outdoor areas, although mine with the setting etc is much smaller than DH's. In fact if he could get cars on mine I'm sure he would.
I don't mind really-I learned 40+ years ago what he was like and it really doesn't bother me. Don't tell him though. I love the cars too.
