Hello to all the new Aussie friends on this forum!

Our Canadian blogger's testimonial contest closed yesterday and three winners were randomly drawn to receive prizes of Smoked Wild Salmon  :P.

Maybe you know some of these lucky winners ;)

First prize winner is Valerie, from Edmonton Canada. Congratulations Valerie!

Second and third prizes were Aussies! See their names announced on www.thermomixblogger.com (http://www.thermomixblogger.com) .

That's all for now. I'm going back to the kitchen!

Cheers,
ThermomixBlogger Helene

How will the fish travel..is it smoked/dried/packaged in ice? I trust you TMB, I am sure you have the situation sussed, but when winnersreceive the package let us know how you are going to cook it and what it tasted like - yeah! Good outcome, and good for you.

CP63 it is Maple-glazed wild smoked salmon from British Columbia, Canada which is specially sealed for shipping and can be sent by mail to anywhere. She told us all about it in the Welcome to the forum section a while back now. What I am going to do with mine will be determined when I get it but I will certainly make a comment on here about it.

I am so impressed with us Judy. We are very lucky girls indeed. Such a lovely person is Helene and so clever to pull us both out of the hat. Do you think there was a fiddle on? LOL! In any case it was a very nice and generous thing to do when after all we were just helping out a fellow thermomixer.

By they way I want to thank all those forum members who helped me out in preparing vegetarian and vegan meals for my visiting son and family. My dear daughter in law actually loves the chocolate tofu ice cream. I can hardly stand to watch her eating it without getting the urge to vomit.

The salted caramel maple syrup ice cream made with fake egg is a winner also. Not quite the same as for real eggs but just as delicious. Anyway kids love anything grandma makes now that they have learned to trust me to make it  :-)) :-)) :-)) :-))!

I can't wait for my salmon to arrive. Pity about the plane tickets. Be nice if Helene delivered then we could have a party!

Thank you all for your inspirations.

Gretchen

If there was 'a fiddle on' Gretchen - weren't we the lucky ones :D :D :D  You do wonder how these random prize winners work though - I didn't go in it to win a prize, as you said it was just to help out a fellow TMXer and winning was a bonus.
We were at a hotel many years ago and were about to leave when one of the workers who was always very friendly to us (probably because we used to go there with 2 blonde daughters & 2 blonde nieces which always drew him and the other male workers to our table with the excuse of saying hi to DH ??? ???) told us to stay put because they were just about to draw a voucher for free lawnmowing for 3 months.  Guess who won ;) ;) ;) DH is in a wheelchair so they obviously thought he needed it and I must say, after that I did give up mowing the lawns and got a contractor in.

Wasn't that a wonderful surprise to win. People can be lovely. I have to admit I don't do lawns any more either. Too hot and too lazy.

Back to feeding the family.

Mowing is over rated! There is much more satisfaction every second Monday night coming home and the lawns are all mown for me while I've been at work. The best $25 a fortnight I ever spend!

Wow, $25 a fortnight ILB - I only pay $20 a month for a front and back lawn.  Does yours really grow that fast that it needs it fortnightly ???

I pay $30 for quite a large yard and in the "WET"it has to be mowed every week or we would be knee deep.

I know how things grow up north Gretchen - lived in Darwin for 1970-1972.  The size of the termites and cockroaches amazed me and if you stuck a twig in the ground it grew into a tree almost overnight ;) ;) Not the same down here with lack of rain, although having said that our rainfall this winter was normal for the first time in years.

The thought of a whole salmon is just amazing. It is something we don't have very often as it's over $30/Kg. The occasional small piece made into a quiche or something similar.
I hope you both really enjoy them.

I didn't think it was a whole salmon Cookie1 - just a piece of it. Anyway, it will be a surprise whatever it turns out to be.

Oh my, oh my MY!!! I am reeling from all the attention these wee salmon prizes have received.  :o Truly, I am.  :o :o

First off I have to remind you that our Aussie friends won second and third prizes... these were meant to be 'small' packages of gourmet salmon (vacuum-sealed for shipping. This salmon http://www.seachangesavouries.ca/maple-glazed-smoked-salmon/ (http://www.seachangesavouries.ca/maple-glazed-smoked-salmon/) -  is provided by the same company that sends it up to the space station for our astronauts). In fact when I went to ship them today, I realized that at (100gr) they are just too small to send. :-[  These were meant to be token prizes, a wee thanks for two Thermomix comments received, but instead... whoaaaaa!  I feel like all of Australia is watching and all the neighbours will be there for a salmon party at Gretchen and Judy's ... and 100 grams of gourmet salmon is barely enough for three crackers!!  :-[   So what am I to do?  :-\  Poor embarrassed me  :-[ all alone up here in Canada. :'(  Well, I'm not completely alone.. I do have Bimby Billy here in town, and Valerie the Canadian Foodie in Edmonton, but they are little consolation... the embarrassment is mine and mine alone.

So......
We have to do better than originally planned.  :)  It seems we have to send enough salmon for an entire BBQ feast.  ;)  Great idea... fly some salmon down for all the Bimby users in Australia to get together for a fan feast BBQ.  :) :)  You can all get together, smack your lips and lick your fingers and thank us from afar.  ;) But sadly, I am but a lone woman with a keyboard and a blog  :-))  and I lack the funding to pull off such a stunt.  (Believe me though, the intent is there... and isn't it "the thought that counts" after all?)   ;D Hmmm. I will do the best I can. :)  I WILL send Judy and Gretchen more than the measly package of gourmet salmon that was offered as a prize. We will make it so that more than three crackers are on the plate when salmon flies in.  Maybe four or five.  ;) The cost is high, and though the salmon will still, after all this, be but a tid-bit, it's the love that counts.  :-* And there's plenty of love for you lot, coming from Canada these days.  :-* :'( :-*

Oh dear you make me laugh H. I nearly wet my pants. Don't worry about the prize my friend. I know that it is a real gourmet treat and much desired. Haven't tasted so wonderful a morsel since I was last in Vancouver some years ago. In fact 20 years ago and I can still taste it in my minds eye so to speak.  I will be more than pleased to receive such a generous ( not measly at all ) gift but no need to send anything really as I was more than pleased just to be asked to contribute and now to see my name up there on such a prestigious web site is about the ultimate for me.

If I had given my last name to you then I would have been inundated with.....  nay bombarded.... with requests for my services to the world wide web but if you can keep it a secret I will tell you. I know you will recognise it. NOT!!!!

Oh, someone on the Thermomix Forum thought we were getting a whole salmon. I nearly fell out of my chair. Now that would be something to see.  You would have to sell your house to pay the postage on that never mind actually buying such a thing.

However small, it is a taste treat to beat all others except maybe a maple glazed whole ham but I doubt I would have enough crackers for that one.

You are a hoot. That's what you are. Don't worry about it. I am sure Judy would feel the same way. We are both famous THERMOMIXERS now.

Still laughing my ass off. I wish!

Gretchen

I agree wholeheartedly with Gretchen and would be thrilled to receive any tiny morsel thanks Helene.  We can't have a party with the others anyway, they are scattered all over Australia and in fact all over the world these days so as much as we would love that to happen, unfortunately it can't.  I received your PM first and didn't realise you had gone onto the forum with all this information so I had already told DH about it and how the forum members were all waiting with baited breath to hear about our prize and what we did with it so DH just said to tell them he ate it when I was out and therefore I didn't have a chance to do anything  ;D ;D ;D  He usually has a solution to every problem, bless him.   Don't stress over it Helene, we have had fun discussing it on the forum as you noticed and anything to make us laugh has to be good for us.  As far as being accepted onto our forum, you bet you are.  With open arms and loving hearts we accept all newcomers :-* :-* :-*

Ha ha !! You are all so kind and I'm glad we're all laughing now...    ;D let's hope it stays that way. I spoke to the salmon people today and asked to 'beef up' the salmon prizes for the Aussies, so no worries, you'll get a bit more than a morsel. Maybe enough for the cat AND yourselves, though I wouldn't um... 'waste' this on the cats...  ;) They do sell this salmon to Nassau, so they assured me it will arrive in good shape, though Australia is not as far as the space station, it almost feels that far to me, sitting here almost a full day behind you on the calendar.

Cheers,
TMB

The salmon is now well on its merry way, and it will be tired from its long flight across the sea, so ladies, maybe let it rest a while before devouring it!  ;)

Seriously though, I'll be interested to know how long it takes to get there - those salmon wings are so tiny, after all.

Warm Thermohugs to you all,

Bon Appetit!

Salmon wings indeed! I was sitting in a restaurant in Port Douglas when a group of American tourists arrived. They were very interested in my plate of deep fried Barramundi wings. I carefully described the dish to them and they expressed surprise that Barramundi could actually fly. Yes indeed I said. We have some very strange critters in Australia.

Seeing as your salmon wings are flying they should be here soon. I'll keep everyone posted.  What a pity Judy we won't be able to share them. NOT :-*

My DH was jealous of your barra wings Gretchen. When we go fishing he always has the wings off the snapper and baldchin or cod we catch. I'm afraid I don't really like picking the meat out from the bones.

Oh my Buddha everyone. The salmon arrived today.  Maple Glazed Wild smoked Salmon and a huge packet of Wild Smoked Sockeye Salmon. I am in piggy heaven.

Sorry everyone who can't make it to Cairns by the weekend as I will be serving it  with a good wine. I  wonder if I can find a  really good Tasmanian Sparkling Wine up here in the deep north.

This is a very special food and deserves some respect .

Cheers,
Gretchen

Happy to report the arrival today of my package of salmon from Canada. Was out all day but found the package at the front door when we arrived home tonight. Now I can relax and not wonder where it is.  Still too cold here in Adelaide to have it just yet but we have 27o forecast for next Tuesday so one package will be used then.  Going to check out the website for the slices to see what else I can do with them apart from on a cracker.  Feel so special receiving such an exquisite prize, thanks Helene so much.  :-* :-*

great Judy, happy to hear this. (where is the emoticon for "doing the happy dance?)

Personally, I wouldn't put that salmon on a cracker. Straight on the tongue is how I'd go!

Anyhow, I don't blame you for wanting to stretch it out, there is precious little in those wee packages. Last week-end I did some nice fat Wild Sockeye Salmon steaks in the Varoma. Very interesting for me, the Varoma Virgin but everyone agreed they were outstandingly tasty. I took some photos, and then as I was putting them on the blog last night I noticed a new button I'd never seen before.... it said "make a movie" and right beside it there was another button that saidl "upload to youtube"... so I just had to try that out. (a new button on my computer? that's almost like waving a red flag in front of a bull!)  ;D

You can see my salmon experiment (and my first youtubing experiment) here:

Thanks, but it's not really a 'video' though I am pretty chufffed at having pulled it off.

BTW, that youtube video now appears on my own blog page at:
http://SuperKitchenMachine/2009/2325/steamed-salmon-bundles.html
(detailed recipe instructions are still to come...)

And for the record... VERY EASY to do the moving slideshow/video,   :) though quite time consuming to get it right.  >:(  I used Picasa image editing software (free!) and there is a little button that says "make a movie"... I bet there are a few more forum members out there who have Picassa... why not give it a try?  ;)

I got my inspiration for my first meal with my smoked salmon from Antonio Carluccio's Passion For Pasta book (another prize I've won on this forum) and although some may say it is sacrilege to not just eat it straight out of the packet, I must say I did enjoy the dish. Cooked up 110g fresh fettuccine, added a handful chopped parsley, big knob of butter, the 100g of smoked salmon,  2 tblspns runny cream, S & P.  We both had a taste of the salmon though before adding the rest to the pasta dish. The flavour of the maple glaze was really lovely. Poured myself a nice glass of white wine and had happy thoughts of you Helene whilst I was eating it. Thanks again. :-* :-*

But really now,the truth is that I got the best prize of all out of this contest >>> NEW FRIENDS DOWNUNDA!!!  :-* :-* :-*
