I'm blushing that my first ever recipe developed for the TMX (ie: not adapted from the books, blogs or forum) is alcohol! LOL
Ingredients:
390g raw sugar
370g hot water
30g instant freeze-dried coffee
500g vodka
1 large vanilla bean
Method:
Grind sugar on speed 9 for 30 seconds. Add hot water and coffee. Mix on 100 degrees, speed 4 for 1 min 30 sec. Slice vanilla bean in half, lengthwise and then each half into quarters. Add vanilla pieces and vodka to TMX bowl. Heat at 60 degrees, speed 3 for 8 minutes.
Pour into a glass bottle and sit for 4 days. Strain and pour into same bottle (will need approx 2L size). Store in a cool, dark place. Enjoy!
I have no idea of the resulting alcohol content of this liqueur.

LOL Bel! Glad some of us know you better than that! ;)
Since I never have freeze dried coffee in my house I might substitute it with espresso topped up with hot water... 8)

Yum. Thanks Bel!

Great stuff Bel - are you blushing or is that the effects of testing your produce??
Think Gretchen and judydawn may like to keep some in the bedside table for any stressful days ahead.
Can't believe you are taking on the grandchild for a week - and can't just give it back when it screams - what were you thinking??
-
;D ;D He still has 2 sleeps a day Thermomixer and also sleeps right through at night (for his Mum anyway) so hopefully DH and I will survive the week. It is just something Mums do for their daughters - give them a break when they need it. You never know, one day Mrs T may do the same with her grand-child - ha ha ha
-
Don't worry JD - she is already talking about how we'll have to rearrange the furniture and cupboards for when the little tacker has sleep-overs :o :o :o
The little man has gone on his first holiday & he really seems to be an angel - always smiling and laughing ( if all kids were like that i could cope :-)) )
Good luck - thinking of you :-*

I have no idea of the resulting alcohol content of this liqueur.
I'll be happy to test this for you!
500g vodka - how many mls is this (if you can remember or have a pre conversion recipe)? Just trying to work out approx cost for 2L. For those who haven't noticed, I seem to do that to everything - in my nature, career etc :-))
-
I'm getting extra excited - Liquorland has Kahlua 700ml on special for $30. And I think I read somewhere that for liquid mls = grams so 500mls Vodka is $20. The remaining ingredient prices are negligible as they're not a special purchase. So 2L homemade for $20 instead of 3 bottles @ $30 each is a saving of approx $65.
This would make a great Christmas present for the extra special people!

You are so brave Bel. My grandchildren will be here in two days and yes Thermomixer I have made plans.
I have made liqueurs from home made raw spirit using a store bought essence (around $8 and makes 2 litres) and liquid glucose but your recipe sounds very nice. I have never had instant coffee in the house but I think it would be the same with a very strong espresso. I will give it a try. Now how about Grand Marnier? Maybe a brandy base? Maybe we need an alcoho's thread. Oh I mean an alcoholic beverage ;D

Brave? Nah!
Yes, 500g vodka is 500ml or 2 cups. Yep, about $20 worth. You could use any coffee I'm sure. It's a fair bit of instant 1/2 cup. Not sure what that equates to for our fair trade instant - maybe $2.50 for 30g? And 50c for the vanilla bean (bulk bought - can't recall the exact price). And $1.70 for the organic raw sugar (bulk bought).
So it's under 2L - maybe 1.75 or 1.8L - didn't measure and under $25. The coffee flavour is fairly strong. I like Kahlua but don't drink coffee. If you're a coffee drinker, it's probably not a strong flavour.
Yes, would make a lovely Chrissy present in small bottles and nicely labeled. :)
I've never made raw spirit or used essences before, but I'd like to try fruit wines once our orchards are in full production...
-
Yes it will make a lovely Chrissy pressie. There is an instrument called an alcometer you can buy in Cairns at any of the several brew shops. It costs about $24 or visit aweb sites such as this one. http://www.brewcraftsa.com.au/showProduct/50040 to have an idea of what I am talking about. All you have to do is pop it into a bit of your liquid and it will tell you the alcohol %. Also www.aussiebrewer.com.au You can find lots of info on line about making fruit wine. I think there are three or four places around the area that make fruit wines including the one at Murdering Point and deBrueys at Mareeba. Call in to Jaques Coffee at Mareeba and taste their coffee liqueur to compare yours to it.
I think you are on to a good thing mama bel.

Did anyone end up working out the alcohol content for this one? :)
-
If the vodka is 40% alcohol - about that - then it will be around 16%
-

Have you tried spotlight? They have quite a range of preserving jars and bottles. Can't remember what the largest one was.

Use 3 x 750 ml bottles or you could buy a flagon of sherry (2 litres) and decant the sherry into 3 bottles to use for cooking - as substitute for Chinese cooking wine. ..... or just drink the sherry :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
You can get them from brewing suppliers - http://www.brewcraftsa.com.au/showProduct/50090 (http://www.brewcraftsa.com.au/showProduct/50090) but EXPENSIVE !!
I have bought flagons of sherry similar to this http://www.liquorhomedelivery.com.au/showProduct/FORTIFIED+WINE/SHERRY/11072 (http://www.liquorhomedelivery.com.au/showProduct/FORTIFIED+WINE/SHERRY/11072) for $8 recently when the local bottle-o was clearing shelves - actually bought 6 flagons. So got the grog for free !!!!
-
Made the Coffee Liqueur and used it as part of a cocktail.....Frangelico cream martini. Very nice! I'll post it under "Drinks"
-
Made this today. It didn't fill a 1.5lt V8 bottle so I was stressing for naught! heehee... Hope it turns out okay... will know Christmas Day... well, more like Boxing Day when people arrive who can actually drink!!!!
-
If you wanted the bottle full for gift giving, you can top it up with more vodka, S. I hope they enjoy it. I've made it a couple of times now and I forget what the bought stuff tastes like! :p
-
hehehe noooooooooo I bought some 740ml cooper bottles (beer) from coles today though but not sure if they're not too big as well lol... was debating if I should pre-make them (with milk so they're RTD)... obviously would have to keep in fridge then.
My cousin gave me some egg nog he made and it's absolutely divine!!! I will have to suck up for a recipe (fingers crossed!) but I know it has sweet sherry and cream in it lol
-
Sorry Snoozie - not thinking - if you are giving them away as presents then the smaller 375ml bottles with the flippy tops with rubber ring and plastic stoppers would have been plenty big enough.
Not sure what they're called - but like these

Best not to add the milk.
Good luck with the eggnog
