I thought it might be nice to share what cookbooks everyone has on there 'to buy' list? I head straight to the cooking section as soon as I enter a book store and starting picking out books I want!
Mine are:
> Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine by Bryant Terry
> reFresh: Contemporary Vegan Recipes From the Award Winning Fresh Restaurants by Ruth Tal & Jennifer Houston
> Super Natural Cooking: Five Delicious Ways to Incorporate Whole and Natural Foods into Your Cooking by Heidi Swanson
> Lola's icecreams and sundaes
> Indian TM cookbook
> ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine: A Food Lover's Road Map to Losing Weight, Preventing Disease, and Getting Really Healthy
and a few more...
I am also looking for a good cook book that just has all the basics, my mum has one called 'the australian cookbook' that is useful. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice basic cookbook?
-
I would like the indian and veg TMX books and I love the look of that lola's icecream book too :)
As for basic cook books I love Stephanie Alexanders book - the cooks companion is great (expensive but great)
-
I have a new rule :) That on the first saturday of the month I get to spend up to $40 on books. (I have to limit it, or I will buy everything)
I think lola's is my number 1 desire!
-
Sim, what a lovely new rule. Actually I must admit I buy books whenever I see them. Apart from TMX books I am trying to limit my cookbook collection. I love reading too so buy lots of my favourite authors when they have a new release and it's cheap at Big W.
-
I want to buy "Sim's greatest beauty recipes" - have you written it yet?
I usually just indulge at the library... :(
-
i am banned (by myself) from buying any more cookbooks - i just never use them.
i do however use my tmx ones so i want the indian one. not sure when i'll be able to afford it though
-
I should be banned - bought 5 secondhand cookbooks last week. Only cost $45 total - but hey I've got too many.
One was Cyndi O'Meara's Changing habits/Lives Cookbook for $8 - not the latest edition - but ...
My next book may be Stephanie's new book - but need to save the pennies and be better disciplined at not buying books that i really don't need.
-
I have stopped buying cookbooks now that I have the TMX - have plenty on hand to convert recipes if I want to and have this wonderful forum for other recipes. Gave away 40 books a couple of years ago for Mum's fete and reckon I could let another 40 go as I rarely look at them these days. I liked Thermomixer's idea (that he didn't stick to for long) of taking one recipe from a different book each week to convert for the TMX. When I have time, I still love to browse through old books though.
-
Funny, while I was watching Julie & Julia last night i was thinking - why didn't I keep going with writing those recipes from the books?
I could probably have written a book and had a film starring Leonardo di Caprio as me ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I was planning to buy Jude Blereau's "wholefood for the family" online and borrowed it from the library just to double check that it would be useful. I'm so happy I did as I've found the recipes very uninspiring. I am really loving Sue Gregg's blender batter wholegrain recipes from her website and am now thinking of buying one of her cookbooks when I have some pennies saved. :)
-
Cookbooks are my one big vice. I always seem to have a wishlist but try to make at least three things from each book to justify the purchase!!!!
Trudy
-
*sigh*
I challenged the kids to a spring cull of their rooms and my 14yo DS said he would if I did my cookbooks... :o
I am awaiting the Indian TMX book... and Vego one.. and the Gluten free one.... and.... :-[
-
*sigh*
I am always buying cookbooks :-)). I try to resist. But I can't help it. I don't need them. And the REAL trap is those cheap books that come around work! Who can resist for $5, $8 or what ever they are. I moved last November and have 3 boxes in storage of cookbooks, my small cupboard here has overflown onto the kitchen table, a pile by my bed and into the main bookcase. I can't help it. And now my justification is "oh, well I'm sure I can convert that to TMX..." :-)) And I keep planning to try at least one new thing a week and convert it.... yeah right! First I'd have to be organised. I have bread ones, fail safe, allergy safe, gluten free, vegetarian, asian, dessert, baking, soups, one bowl meal, whole foods, whole grains, slow cooker, yoghurt recipes, cheap eats, entertaining, canapes, tapas, icecreams & sorbets, cakes, birthday cakes, cupcakes, biscuits, slices, more cakes, ...... you name it, I've probably got something in that category.
And the sad thing is... when I get back to work on Wednesday, there will be a new set and I'll be sifting through the 3 lots (we don't just have one lot of cheap books... we have 3 different lots!! :o ) lof new books. And guess who couldn't possibly resist something.... ??? :-)) ;)
-
At least you cook ILB - one of my staff can't resist and doesn't cook. Has a cupboard bursting with those cookbooks and last week bought an "Easy" Italian cookbook with a CD. After the man had taken her money and left we asked why - she said she thought that it was a good idea to have a DVD to show you how to cook. Shame - she hadn't really looked and it was a CD with Italian opera selections to listen to while you cook like an Italian ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
LMAO Thermomixer! Oops.
She's in for a suprise - IF she ever puts it on :D
-
Hi!
I´m not buying cookbooks anymore. That´s what I said last year. Okay. I bought one I really had to have : 1000 Recipes to try befor you die. Should be enough to do for a while. And then I found a Jewish American Cookbook second Hand...
Okay, but now I´m done with buying cook books. I take them home from the public library and take them back after I´m through with them. There are a couple left there and I hope they will buy new ones ;D.
-
I know the books you mean ILB - they have them for sale at the hairdressing salon I go to. I always used to buy them but have the willpower now, to not even look at them. I just check out the children's books instead. Be strong ILB - you can do it. You need to ;) ;)
-
I find my cookbooks pretty useful, I look through most of them each week and cook 1-3 meals from them. I only have 10 or so. I generally have to drool over a book for a while before I buy. The library is a great way to test them or sometimes I go to book-stores and sit in the cooking section looking at all the pretty books and add them to my wish-list. My cooking passion has only really been around for 2 years, so I haven't had the time to build up a huge collection. Also, I think my lifestyle may be less demanding then some of yours, I don't have kids or any other commitments. My only dietary requirements are vego and not too much lactose. Pretty easy compared to some.
I don't think I will ever stop collecting them though. Cookbooks are my two passions combined... design and cooking. How could I resist that? (I can resist ugly cookbooks though, how shallow of me lol)
-
I want to buy "Sim's greatest beauty recipes" - have you written it yet?
I usually just indulge at the library... :(
Not yet! lol But I did purchase 'making professional lotions and creams' and it had information about how to make your own recipes. I am just about to pot up some samples and give them out with questionnaires, asking people to give me feed back. Any volunteers?
-
I also find cookbooks a good read. Novels on the otherhand I only read once and you can't make anything nice from them!!!
Trudy
-
I'll be volunteer for you Sim :)
-
Thanks ILB, I will let you know when they're ready and I will send you some. Yay
-
I'll volunteer Sim, yum!
I have just bought The Home Creamery because we have a house cow (therefore excess milk) now.
And I've ordered the Indian TMX cookbook which I can't wait to try. I have almost all of them now!
-
Thank you mama bel!
-
oooh oooh oooh * excitedly puts hand up * ;D I would love to volunteer Sim
-
Awesome.... Alright... well that's great news. I'll wait a few more days and see if I get anymore volunteers, and then i will email/message you all. Thanks all, its a really big help :) I need to know that people actually like them.
-
*waving hands in the air* I'd love to be a guinea pig. Are you north/south?
-
Another! Yepee! I am an inner-norther ;D
-
Hi Sim,
I read and serched, but I can´t find what people volenteer for ???.
We´ll you tell me? My couriosity can´t get any bigger.... ;D

Testing beauty products - are you game??
-
Am I game? You bet!
But, you´re not sending them to Germany, right? rofl
-
I'm just below the Hyperdome... but I do go to Deakin regularly :P
-
I am sometimes in tuggeranong, so we can sort something out. I think it will be about a month away till I am ready to give some samples out anyway...

If is reasonably priced I can send one to Germany if you like, lol!
-
Sim,
I wouldn´t think the price for shippment is resonable *rofl*.
But I can offer moral support :)!
-
Sim,
I am prepared to give it a try for you - i have insanely sensative skin (my last facial ended up with a terrible burning sensation on my face) so natural sounds great to me.
Happy to contribute to postage to Sydney if your cool with that.
Mel

I was watching Julie & Julia last night
I'm going to watch J&J tonight in our bookshop, cafe/bar and arthouse cinema. I won't look at any books oooooohm :-)) . I'm waiting for the Indian TMX-Cookbook :)
-
Step away from the bookshelf and nobody will get hurt !!!!
-
Sim, if you're still looking for volunteers I don't mind being a guinea pig.
I love bookshops. I spend an eternity in the cooking section and then hours in the rest. I adore reading (although with the forum and my TMX it is taking a sad third). I would hate to admit how many cookbooks I have. DD is nearly as bad as I am. We had to have over 8 metres of ceiling high bookshelves put in and they're stacked in every which way there!! Even bouncing onto the floor. I keep cookbooks for ever but do pass on novels after I've read them. I just can't resist buying books. (another addiction I guess). I adore Borders in Carlton, Readers Feast and Dymocks in Melbourne. Borders in Singapore and Perth. Our excess luggage is almost always books (maybe shoes too).
-
Yep, I'm still looking for volunteers. I'll send everyone a message soon, and then go from there... but I might not send them for a while yet. I have to find the time to do it, and I also want to make sure its good stuff I am sending!
;D
-
I'm not even going to admit to how many cookbooks I have....I will just let you all use your imagination whilst I remind you all that for the last hmmm 10 years or so we were one of those cheap book sellers :o :o :o :o enough said ;)
-
Step away from the bookshelf and nobody will get hurt !!!!
It is/was really hard ;) We love bookshops and moving with books is a nightmare. Maybe I should blog Julie & Elisabeth instead :D ?
-
I think this place (and the internet in general) is my next cookbook. The ideas here (and out there) are fantastic, and adaptable for anything, and full of ideas. I'll never get through all these recipes!
-
I can relate to that Cathy. Years ago (BC) I used to do decorative painting too. I haven't painted for about 5 years now, but still pick up the odd painting book and request the subscription for Christmas or Birthdays - like my cookbooks and recipes - i will probably never get to them... but it's nice to dream ;D
Went and saw J&J at the movies last night also. Couldn't help but thinking 'now if only they had a Thermomix' ;) :D :D :-)) However it did make me want to try some of those dishes, and thought of this tread. My next cookbooks would be:
1/ - Can't remember the name of it but it was one that Thermomixer recommeded for understanding how all the food interacts together... will have to find that.
2/ Mastering the Art of French Cooking - by Julia Childs - lol would probably never get to it either....
-

Could be Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking ?
-
:-* That's it! ;)
-
I'll volunteer too, Sim!
-
Thanks Caroline :)
I thought I would tell everyone about the most beautiful cookbook I just bought. Lola's ice creams and sundaes. It is gorgeous! I can't wait to try some of the recipes in it. Plum and Early Grey tea flavour intrigues me... There are some amazing ideas in it, and some crazy ingredients. I think the strangest one would have to be the one using crab meat, but she describes it as a cold crab bisque entree, so when you put it that way, it might be nice. It is certainly not a dessert though, lol!
I can't eat ice cream for... ages though because a can't eat sugar for ages! I can dream though. *sigh*
The one of vanilla ice cream recipe uses 9 egg yolks and makes 1.5L, wow!
-
Gosh I would have to make a lot of meringues to use up all those egg whites.
-
Well... perhaps its a good excuse to make them? hehe
(I think you can freeze egg whites.... ??? not sure)
-

Sure can Sim, just make sure you make a note on the container just how many egg whites there are in there.

You poor thing Sim - how do you cope on the forum? I've just found out that I can't have any fats or oils till about Christmas and then only a tiny bit. While we don't each much - cutting it out all together is prooving tricky. We went out to a restaurant last night (who have seen the tmx but haven't purchased yet) and the chef who I know said they'd prepare it with as little oil etc as possible, I found myself thinking, if only they could steam the chicken in the Varoma instead of pan frying..... :-))
-
just for reference, the indian cookbooks are out of stock til christmas-ish... :(:(
-
My indian cookbook arrived last week :D
-
I'm very glad I have mine. I can see why they are out of stock, I think it's rather good.
-

I cope alright... getting used it now, it could be much worse! I don't know how you can't have any fats or oils?!? That sounds very difficult. What about fat that is in animal products? Like meat and milk? Thats ok to eat? I think you have it worse! I like my butter too much.

hi,
which of the thermomix cookbooks is the best to buy.
i have had my thermomix for 2 weeks now, and i love it.
i also have made my banana bread recipe in the thermomix and it worked great.
i also have tried a fair few recipes from this forum too.
thanks,
robyn

I don't think I will be buying anymore cookbooks as I have started going through all of mine and making a list of things which I feel can be converted for the TMX. Was up until 1am this morning going through 3 books (it becomes very addictive and exciting and you just want to do another book). I have one UK book called 365 Dish A Day + 1 for a leap year and I have put 56 recipes on a list which I feel can be converted. I always read every recipe in a cookbook, make lists of things to do rather than use the index and on my original list of recipes to try there were 93 out of the 366 recipes so my 56 for the TMX is a pretty high percentage. Most recipe books I only get a few things suitable to convert. What a quandary - where to start ??? ??? Plus of course, there are all those lovely recipes already converted on our forum I want to try too. Oh well, better to be excited about food at my age rather than sick of deciding what to cook.
-
So true Judy. I'm actually finding that I am using the TMX now for all or bits of everything I do.
-
OH dear. Do yo think you need therapy Judy?
;D ;D ;D
Gretchen
-
For which problem Gretchen ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Maybe there is a therapist on line we could share. ;) ;) ;) ;)
Gretchen
-
I meant to add to my last posting - If I'm going to have to go to a therapist, I'm taking a whole load of guys from this forum with me ;D ;D ;D
-
Oh goody. I could then say to DH "I'm going on the forum for half an hour, then I'll be working with my therapist for another half hour" That way I could scrape in extra time.
-
By the time we need it, do you think they will have a retirement village cum nursing home for ex-users of the TMX because we are going to have more problems than the average oldie with not being able to cook anymore and being separated from our TMX's. ;) ;)
-
I thought this was group "therapy".
What we need is a nursing home devoted to retired Thermomixers with wheelchair attachments for carrying the thing around.
Gretchen
-
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I can just see us all now, terrorising the other 'inmates'
-
LOL it's our very own laurel & hardy ;)
-
haha,
what sort of therapist do you need today.
Robyn
-
A 'why-are-we-obsessed-with-our-TMX' therapist, obbie ;D ;D ;D
-
I'm having a giggle at a retirement home with us in it, hugging our Thermomixes (not Thermomixer) tightly on out knee in our motorised wheelchairs. They must be motorised so that we can tear around the corridors. They would probably put us in the locked section for demented mixers. Gee we could have a lot of fun, terrorising the kitchen staff and threatening the carers.
"I'll put you in my Thermomix if you won't let me go and see Judy, I want her Swiss steak recipe" ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Oh, you gals have me laughing! I can just picture it! At least when we have no teeth we can puree it to a super smooth and creamy soup ;) :D :D
Well I did it again with those cheap books. A woman weekly Christmas (thought there were heaps of good ideas in there for Christmas Hampers... ) and a Thai one. Anyway my aim is that when I have a few weeks off after surgery next month I'll be able to convert. :-))

Glad you have got your recovery time all planned ILB - in the meantime, take care of yourself :-* :-*
-
We could go to MrsT's facility - but she'll be in the wheelchairs with us by then :o :o :o
-
The more the merrier and it looks like I'll be the first. Can I make a booking Thermomixer? Does she allow computers and Thermomixers?
-
She'll certainly allow a Thermomixer - but she might confiscate his Themomix :-)) :-))
-
LOL
-
For anybody who is into preserving (or just starting out like me :D) I would really recommend the book "A Year in a Bottle" by Sally Wise. Sally is a Tasmanian lady who makes the most amazing preserves. I have learnt so much about sterilising bottles, setting jams, pickling veg, making chutneys, relishes and sauces etc from reading this very practical book. I bought my copy secondhand off ebay, but you can also buy them from the ABC ebay store (or just google the title and find an online bookstore).
-
Thanks Chelsea
-
I agree with you Chelsea it is a very good book. I actually have the ABC slow cooker book too and that is fantastic.
-
I was tempted to buy the slow cooker book too Cookie, but it rarely gets used these days. I wonder if the novelty of my TMX will ever wear off!!!
-
I shouldn't think so. I've had mine 14 months and still find what it can do amazing. If the novelty does wear off someone will post an amzing recipe on here that will get us all inspired again.
-
I received the Fast and Easy Cooking book from UK Thermomix in yesterday's mail. I'm surprised at how rapidly it got here.
I ordered it on January 19 and got a confirmation of my payment (via PayPal) on the 20th. and received the book on the 27th. Excellent service!
I'm considering the Indian cookbook but will wait awhile as there are so many interesting recipes in this F&E cook book that it will keep me busy for quite a while.

Is anyone able to order from Thermomix UK? You don't have to be a consultant?
-
Yes anyone can. Check out their website for contact details - they respond very quickly to emails and are so helpful. I gave them my order and details via email and then made a quick phonecall to them with my credit card details. :)
-
I would really recommend the book "A Year in a Bottle" by Sally Wise.
thanks for the recommendation - l got my copy today and will be making some pectin stock with apple cores l was about to put in my bokashi.

This is not a TMX book but all mums who are having trouble getting their children to eat vegies should have this one. I went through it today whilst babysitting down at DD's place and have written out heaps of the recipes. It is called Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld, yes wife of the Seinfeld chap. They have hidden pureed vegies in them & would be so easy to convert, things like
rice balls with sweet potato
scrambled eggs with cauli
hot cocoa with sweet potato
doughnuts with pumpkin & sweet potato
carrot & spinach brownies
carrot & cauli muffins
lemon raspberry cupcakes with pumpkin & beetroot
banana marshmallow dip with pumpkin
blueberry cheesecake cupcakes with yellow squash
& spinach
choc fondue dip with avocado & carrot
gingerbread spice cake with broccoli & carrot
chocolate pudding with avocado
choc cupcakes with avocado & cauliflower
Choc peanut butter dip with carrot
+ more including main meals.
I loved reading this book and applaud her methods of getting her children to eat things that are good for them without knowing it. It is going to take me forever to get through this list to convert, cook and post so if you are interested in these recipes I would suggest you get hold of this book somehow. Perhaps even see if the library has it and copy some out yourself. It is brilliant.
-
That was the book that Jessica Seinfeld was in the news about (plagiarism). I don't think she realised that the chap who actually developed the recipes would noticed that she copied them all and made a mint out of them!!! I think some of the recipes are great (like the chickpea cookies) but some have such a teeny amount of veg in them that it is barely worth going to the trouble of preparing them.
-
Did he take her to the cleaners Chelsea? I certainly wouldn't cook up 1/2 cup of a vegie to puree and add to her recipes but it could be done quite simply by making sure you had some leftovers. There are some nice recipes there which I intend doing for DH & myself - and we eat any vegie!! Of course, she cooks, purees and freezes vegies so only has to pull out a packet when needed. Is this where the chickpea and choc chic cookies came from? I saw that in there but didn't copy it because I already have done it from the forum.
-
I do question the nutritional value of some of the Deceptively Delicious recipes, once the vegies have been cooked, pulverised and cooked again any goodness must be negligible in a lot of the recipes
I had the book but returned it, the other similar book is called The Sneaky Chef I think. I guess Jessica having contacts like Oprah Winfrey was able to promote her book a little bit more and make a motza!
-
I did notice that all of "her" recipes were taken off the Oprah website (there were quite a lot on there) and am not sure if they have been put back on. I'm not sure what happened with the court case, but it didn't look good at the time. Yes Baf I also wonder about the nutritional value of the food after all the cooking. Still if the recipes are tasty and easy I will give them a go when JD gets converting. :)
-
Could be Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking ?
Just bought this along with A Year in a Bottle by Sally Wise . . . . .
-
I was given a copy of the Nigella Lawson book "Nigellissima" yesterday. Lots of pasta recipes,. I think there must have been a TV show on the Lifestyle channel. Have not had time to look closely through it but would not have a clue where you would get the pure italian liquorice pellets from to make the liquorice pudding. Wonder if good quality liquorice would do the same thing.
Marie
-
Marie, Wow your lucky, i have it on pre-order.
Cant wait to have it :)
Whats it like?
H :)
-
Contents are
Pasta
Flesh, Fish & Fowl
Vegetables & Sides
Sweet Things
An Italian inspired christmas
Have only had a quick glance through it, but there looks to be some delicious recipes.
It says on the front 'Instant Italian Inspiration"
Looking forward to trying something from the book soon. Hope you enjoy your copy when it arrives.
Marie
-
I looked at that yesterday but didn't buy it. It is her latest tv series but don't think it has come to Australia yet.
To be honest it didn't inspire me at all
I ended up buying Nigel Slaters Kitchen diaries,
All recipes are seasonal which is how I like to cook. :)
-
There is a free Nigellissima app in the app store.
It is just a taster with only 9 recipes from her book but worth a look if anyone is considering buying the book. ;D
-
None I hope haven't looked much at the last few I bought. The last one was Maggie Beer's cooking with Verjuice

-
Cp I don't know what this has on the front I'm at work, must look through my cookbooks and get some new recipes
-
The Nigella app is taking ages to download >:(
Back to cleaning up I suppose >:(
Was the Maggie Beer one free?
H :)
-
The only thing free was the sample look H :'(
Think the verjuice one has a pic of her on the front, fairly dark background off memory (haven't got it)
-
Oh well might take a peak :) thanks CP
H :)
-
I have a cook book addiction too and now have to really restrain myself.
Love Maggie Beer so wlll try the free app now 😃
-
I got mine on iBooks
-
I am going to try real hard to convert my first recipe this weekend. I feel like I need to " give back" to the forum as I get so much out of it, so rather than get more books I am going to get converting!!
-
I never plan to buy cookbooks, they are usually an impulse buy ;)
-
Thanks CP as I searched on app store and couldn't find it. :(
Now I know why!!! ;D

I bought the book last night at Big W for $28....looks good. I like the simplicity of her recipes too.
Well after reading Octobers Delicious mag, this book is next on my hit list

There were a few recipes showcased, and I'm literally drooling over the dulce de leche brioche buns....mmmm, and the salted caramel tarte tatin not far behind!
-
That girl on the cover looks skinny too maddy, so I'm sure the recipes are not fattening either ;)

That girl on the cover looks skinny too maddy, so I'm sure the recipes are not fattening either ;)
LOL...of course they won't be fattening :P
apparently she also has a tv series, filmed in her teeny tiny French kitchen...sooo Julie/Julia...which I must watch again for the umpteenth time :)
forgot about the wish list on Amazon for not yet released books......

The Alaska sourdough one I bought secondhand from Amazon, still waiting on that to arrive.
The Nigella one is available from Kmart around $32 I think. I was given that one and have tried to make the liquorice pudding from it this morning. It is in the fridge at the moment.
That Little Paris Kitchen looks interesting.

I want this book :)

My two latest cookbooks are "100 best Cakes & Desserts" by Gabriel Gate which I have been wanting since it came out and today picked up "All Consuming Passions" by Ian Parmenter from the ABC shop. This last book is a mix of recipes but most seem easy to achieve for both weekday cooking or something special.

Thanks Maddy!! - BIG sigh!!! ;D ;D You're doing absolutely NOTHING to help my addiction!!! ;D ;D ;D (keep it up!!!)

Or my waistline LOL ;D ;D ;D
-
Maddy, I could be tempted to buy that sweets book.
-
I have been trying to stay away from the newer posts on here, impossible.
Maddy where did you get the Madeleine's book please? We love them.
I'm looking at the new Adriano Zumbo book. I said I would never buy his first one but succumbed when I met him.

Thanks Maddy.
I haven't made anything from Adriano's first book. That was why I wasn't going to buy it as I was fairly sure I wouldn't make much from it. However after meeting him and having my photo taken with him.............. It is a lovely book just to sit and read.

I was given Bill Granger's latest book EASY by my DH yesterday. Have to say that looking at the recipes it has to be one of his better books. I loved his earlier books but did not think much of HOLIDAY and others. But this looks like being a winner.
-
I have Jamie Oliver's 15 mins book on its way. ;D.
But not sure where to! When the notification came out they have sent it to town of not found!!! Have emailed them and said please tell me that since you had the correct town you didnt send it to not found. Not a great introduction to using QBD online store and they haven't replied :(
Have heard from the bookstore. They believe it is coming to the correct address, even though the invoice doesn't say that. I will be very interested to see of that's correct.

I'll take a look at that Courton - I like Bill's Sydney food. Bill's Food and Bill's Open Kitchen but haven't thought much of his other books and sold them on ebay.
-
I just saw the Bills cookbook at Big W today and was tempted! I do have a few of his cookbooks (and live mighty close to one of his cafes - very bad for the waistline!) and I do like them so I will be interested to see what you think GF.
I was also tempted by What Katie Ate book - I'm going to spend some time checking out her blog tonight. For me, it's not the price of the cookbooks but that I have run out of space to store them so they really have to be worthwhile!

Lucky you Snappy. I ate at Billy Kwongs years ago, very nice. Don't think it is open anymore though.
-
It is mcmich, it doesn't take bookings though, so you need to spend an hour or two drinking in the bar across the road before you can get a table - I hate that.
-
Good to know that it's still open, wouldn't hang around for a table though.
-
I like the look of What Katie Ate too. I am hoping more cookbooks come out on kindle or ipad. Too many books, not enough room!

Me too, much prefer the ebook version these days, like you say, don't have to store them and you still get to see all the photos etc just like a book. They are an instant download and the cheaper price is a bonus too. :D

My next purchase is Tenina's "What's for dessert?" ebook. Waiting for the weekend :)
-
OK - I couldn't help myself.... i just purchased Tenina's new ebook :)
Why wait for the weekend when I could be looking at it NOW??????

Bought Bill Granger's "Feed Me Now". have made 2 biscuit slices from it and both good. Have converted to TMX but not posted. Too busy with GC. Got 30% 0ff at DJ.
Also bought Michelle Bridges "the No Excuses Cookbook" haven't looked at it yet.

she is a professional photographer!
But I do like her food - its simple flavours and easy instructions.

Got the kindle version of Yotam Ottolengli's "Jerusalem" - I love his middle- eastern cooking and already have "Plenty" the vegetarian book. Great ideas for lovely veges in this book and a bit of everything in Jerusalem. If you're not familiar with his food look at the Guardian newspaper online, lots of his recipes in the lifestyle section. Www.guardian.co.uk
-
I quite fancy Gordon Ramsay's Great Escape South East Asia ebook for kindle.
Recipes from Thailand,Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia.
Don't really need it but my addiction wants it ;D

I will have to give this a look. I do like vegetarian.
-
I have never heard of him but sounds great and will have a look. Love vegetarian dishes and try to have a couple of vegetarian meals each week,
-
Not exactly a cookbook but the beautiful Judy sent me a book about lemons.
Cleaning, laundry, garden, beauty, health and cooking.
I'm hoping to convert some recipes for the thermomix. I made the pet conditioning one this afternoon and gave Harry a squirt and a brush. Smells lovely although I don't think Harry was impressed - he sneezed and shook and rubbed himself all over the backyard.
I'm going to try the recipe for eczema tomorrow as both myself and my stepdaughter have skin conditions.
-
That would be great if it worked Michele. I found it fascinating reading myself.
-
I'm thinking the recipes for cleaning + Helene's scrubbies will be a wonderful combination.

Love his recipes.
I posted one for his Savoury Cheese Cake (http://achookwoman.blogspot.com.au/2010/03/yotam-ottolenghis-aubergine-cheesecake.html) a couple of years ago. Made it for a picnic gathering and was well liked. I agree that the Guardian is well worth checking out.
Bonsai, do you know if ' Jerusalem' is available for iPad ?
-
I looked last night Chookie and it's available on iBooks and Amazon kindle for $21.99.
-
Thanks MF. Will look into this. Do I really need another Cookbook??????
-
Most definitely - even if its just for inspiration.
-
I try really hard not to buy any more cookbooks as I have so many already. But sometimes I can't help myself, and I succumb. I was in a news agency in Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia whilst on holiday, and a dusty book caught my attention. I put down the magazines and bought a(nother) cookbook instead. It's called "Cook in Boots" by Ravinder Bhogal and has photos of sky high heels (that i could never wear) amongst fabulous photos of food. This book was a great companion on my long trip - I rationed myself so that it lasted for most of the trip, just reading a few recipes at a time. I really enjoyed it, and now every time I open it, I will be reminded of our trip to WA.

-
Have you cooked anything out of it yet Sue?
-
I got Teninas For Foods Sake today. Geez Louise! Wish I'd known tha as the firs book I should have bought. Heaps of recipes I'm going to be whipping up here. Now to decide what's first. Mmmmmm
-
Someone gave me this book for Xmas 2 or 3 years ago.
I enjoyed reading it but gave it to my friend.
Tried a few recipes but wasn't really impressed
-
What book was that MF?
-
Snappy I gather it was FFS
-
No CP it was Cook in Boots that I was referring too. Sorry I didn't make it clear as I had just read Emerald Sue's review without realizing someone had posted about FFS
-
I LOVE for foods sake! Made the strawberry jam last night, the yellow curry paste today, umami tomorrow....I have made so many of the recipes in that book! It's an absolute winner. Gosh you'd think I was getting royalties or something. No affiliation, just like it a lot. I'm going to try the fudge tomorrow too. The yellow curry paste was lovely in a vege curry tonight with a tin of coconut cream, also in a batch,of mayo. Gives coleslaw a golden hue!
-
No. I've been laid low with a cold and haven't felt much like cooking. I cooked salt and pepper squid for dinner tonight, but DH organised take away for the previous 2 nights. I'm hoping I'll get some time next weekend.
Just realized that I forgot to press the done button last night, and this post wasn't sent.
I hope I have better luck with the recipes and don't have to pass this book on:(
-
ES the friend that I passed Cook in Boots onto loves it. She only has a few cookbooks and uses this one quite frequently.
I just found that as I have so many different cookbooks this one didn't offer anything new that I didn't already have in other books.
Rather pass it on and be loved and used than gather dust on my already overflowing bookcases.
Loved the photos :)

Asking a favour? Was wondering if if any of you that have Ottolenghi's book Plenty would mind posting or PMing me the contents please?
I can't seem to find it in the book shops and haven't been able to find the contents online. Thanks mich.

Marie

;D

Wow just love this thread and so glad for the cookbook ideas :) on the strength of what I have read here I just downloaded Jerusalem for my iPad from Amazon. Loved it so much (and I'm only in the salads section), that I went back to Amazon and got two more, the vegetarian one and another. There are so many great ideas and recipes im dying to try when i get back home!
-
I'm going to get your book when it comes out JO
Just seen this CP. ;D ;D
If I'm ever interested in a cook book I always check Amazon first to see if I can look inside. Usually you can see some of the recipes so it gives you an idea of what to expect. :D
-
Thanks for the review Jude, I've been eyeing this book off too - there are so many good cookbooks being released at the moment.
-
Will be interested to see how you all like Jerusalem. Have just bought Plenty and will post my reviews.
-
For those of you trying bravely to avoid buying another cookbook, the guardian newspaper online has a lot of ottolenghli recipes, especially those from "Plenty"
-
Thanks Bonsai I just looked at Guardian online and found 87 recipes of Ottolenghli.
Will refer to them before buying anymore books ;D
-
He's been very generous with his recipes in the Guardian. A very useful way to see if you need the cook book, plus new recipes all the time. Felicity Cloakes " the perfect...." Series are great too, and at no cost.
-
Just been on the SMH website and each Saturday in October they are offering a free download of a cookbook. Today is limoncello and linen water by Tessa Kirros.
-
Thanks, Snappy - just downloaded it! Looks a lovely book . . .
-
Tried downloading the book but you need an i thingy to view it. Shame it looks like a nice book.
-
Thanks for the recommendations I have just ordered the Indian cooking book (hope it comes before Christmas!) as it seems popular on here. Thanks Ladies : )

This one when the price comes down a bit more

Don't have a kindle, but booko search for amazon U.S plus postage came up as $32 total.

Search amazon Australia and then search for Nigella's Christmas kindle and when it brings up the kindle edition look underneath and it says hard cover 14.00

It says only 4 left in stock

No idea what the postage is but if you spend $25.00 then postage is free

Really? :o....Is that just available to U.S. residents though? I have spent way more than $25 in the past there and the postage usually exceeds what I'm buying to get it to Oz >:(

I buy a lot from amazon - sometimes the orders have exceed $300 and still no free postage to Australia :(
I think that must be a US deal Maddy
-
Not sure on that one as I only buy kindle books sorry I have no idea. ???
-
I just bought the WW Christmas Collection today - I tried really hard not to but ended up losing the fight!
-
I'm enjoying reading this thread. I'm so happy to be in the company of people exactly the same as me...people who are addicted to buying cookbooks! Even though we all have too many cookbooks as it is, we just can't help but buy more (and you're right, those ones that come around to workplaces are really bad, they're so tempting, because they have such bargains, it's hard to refuse! - luckily I'm a stay at home mum these days so don't get the chance to look at them!)
I've just bought myself a copy of Bourke Street Bakery. I'm loving just reading through each page. It's brilliant! Great photos and some awesome recipes I can't wait to try.
The next TMX book I would like (when I save up a bit) is the "Vegetarian" one or "For Food's Sake".
Any recommendations anyone???
-
Definitely For Foods Sake blackwood followed by Quick Fix in the Thermomix
-
I agree with Snappy blackwood. Wonderful books.
-
Again, I agree with snappy! ;D
-
Thanks guys! A unanimous decision! I have read so many great things about both of those books (For Food's Sake as well as Quick fix...)
I haven't had much time to make anything lately, but I will definitely add both of them to my wish list! I think with my bub getting all these little gifts from friends, that i deserve a little something too!!! ;)
Thanks for the advice everyone!
-
Oh no! I didn't really mean to but I bought "Theo & Co". Looked to be lots of yummy recipes for pizzas plus a few extras on the side.
-
A friend of mine lent us the Theo & Co book, but I don't think I would buy it myself. There seemed to be a lot of talk and not many recipes! :-\
-
I have bourke street bakery too and love it. For Foods Sake is one of my favorite books so would highly recommend getting it.
-
There are heaps of good recipes tho, and lots of tips in the talking. When I get a chance over the weekend I'm gonna sit down in a quiet spot. No chance of having pizza for a couple of days yet as DD is getting all 4 wisdom teeth out today.
-
Oh poor DD... :-[
Having wisdom teeth extracted is just a tad unpleasant :P
-
I would like Quick Fix and For Foods sake. does anyone in Perth know if they are in stock at any of the book shops listed on the Hub and Spoke site???
-
Just realised that if I order both online they will be shipped free so no point running round the shops!
-
Tenina was at Dymocks in Garden City yesterday.
-
Tenina fly this way.
Qld, great one day, perfect the next. Nice and hot, and you could come visit Gert and me in the one day...
Imagine the fun... :) :) :)
One of Tenina's of course.
-
Well I am such a lucky duck.
I was sent a lovely cook book by a very wonderful forum fairy
Mary Berry complete http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mary-Berrys-Complete-Cookbook-Berry/dp/1405370955
I shall post good recipes with links if can find and try to convert if poss.
Don't want to get into copyright issues.
And another wonderful forum fairy sent me Lemons
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lemons-Hundreds-Household-Cleaning-Practical/dp/0857752626/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1351457075&sr=1-3
It appears I can fix everything from drains to cellulite with lemons!
And another equally wonderful forum fairy sent me Tenina's Dinner Spinner. http://tenina.com/
I am very blessed and very lucky.
-
Thinking about buying the festive Thermomix one that is being reprinted this dec. Any thoughts?
-
It's a good little book Kimmy. Here (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=8430.0) are the links to reviews of a lot of the recipes in it.
-
Really wanting to get "For Food's Sake" or the TMX Asian cookbook next. I am a cookbook / cooking magazine fiend though, love trawling through looking for recipes to try.. I am running out of room for them all!
-
I was very lucky today and was gifted For Food's Sake by a lovely young woman from Ireland.
Ironic as last week I almost ordered it online and decided to wait.
Sometimes we are lucky.
After looking through the book I love, love, love it!!! ;D

I agree MF it is a very special book and I just love it too ;D
-
Was really hoping to make Tenina's book signing at Garden City on Saturday but that was the only time I had available all week to get my TMX delivered!! I figured that it was more useful to me as I wouldn't be able to cook anything out of Tenina's book without my TMX :)
Did anyone from here get to go?
-
Ordered for foods sake and quick fix both online with free postage, they are going under the tree for me though so will be a while before I get to try out recipes.
-
Free postage?? Wow that's a bargain! Was that on hub and spoke? They'll never last till Christmas!! ;)
-
Tenina just want to take this opportunity to say that I was gifted For Food's Sake today and what a treasure. ;D
Love it and can't wait to cook from it.
Thank you soooo much :)
-
Oh my goodness!!!! My husband has just given me a present...He bought me Quick Fix in the Thermomix! I am so excited (can't you tell from all of the exclamation marks???!!!)
I've had such a stressful past 6 months, as my baby was found to have a few problems at the 20 week ultrasound. He is now 5 weeks old and is on a few medications, but hopefully everything will turn out for the best) So hubby has bought me this wonderful present to enjoy as he has just gone back to work this week. (I've got three children, 4 years, 2 years, and a newborn...so him going back to work was a bit terrifying!!!...but I'm coping at the moment!!!)
Anyways, just had to share with you my newest cookbook and I'll be leaving some reviews as soon as I find time to cook! (i've just made the banana and coconut bread so will leave a review for that soon too!
Now I only need to buy "For Food's Sake" and I'll be set! I think that one will have to go on my Christmas wish list! ;D
I can't wait to cook tea tonight!!! Miso chicken is up there as a priority to try first! (just need to buy some miso!) :)
-
That's great news blackwood. Good luck with copying with the three kids on your own, that's quite a handful.
-
Girl power , good on you Blackwood..
you will be fine
-
What a lovely thoughtful Dh you have Blackwood. It's a lovely cookbook, enjoy.
-
Blackwood how thoughtful of him. I hope your worries are almost over.
TraceTrace if I had been home I would have gone in to say hi to Tenina. I am lucky as my book is already signed. It makes them so special.
-
Blackwood, your hubby has done very well to give you this fabulous book as a gift. I've only had my TMX for less than 3 weeks and although I now have the EDC, Tenina's 'For Food Sake' and Alyce's 'Quick Fix in the Thermomix', QFITT is the one that has inspired me to try new dishes. It is a great book. Enjoy!
-
You certainly deserve that cookbook with all the work you must do raising three young children blackwood ;)
Clever DH :D
-
Thanks everyone! Yeah, he is a sweetie...and very thoughtful! ;D I'm a lucky gal!
I received some great news from my bub's paediatrician today...one of the problems he has was that his kidneys have been enlarged since the 20 week scan...well, he had another ultrasound yesterday and it showed that his kidneys have now gone back to normal! Yay..i can finally stop giving him the antibiotics that he's been on everyday since he was born!
On a cooking note...I am just living QFITTM...like all of you guys, I can just sit down and read it like a novel!
Looking forward to posting some reviews of the recipies.

Hi Temina, yes Hub and Spoke, both books arrived today so very quick can't wait to have time to sit and read them.

So I'm bumping this because I think I might get the kids to get me a cookbook for Christmas - my current thought is Jerusalem by otttolenghi but I'm interested in anyone's thoughts of some good all round cookbooks (I just got a wonderful dessert one from my SS).
-
The cookbook I am hoping for next is For Food's Sake, but can't find a local supplier with it in stock! Hub and Spoke won't ship here, and via Tenina's site, shipping is quite a lot (about the same as the cost of the book). I've signed up to be notified if it comes into stock to a couple places. Got enough to keep me going really anyway!! ;D

Did you end up getting Jerusalem? I bought it a few months back. It's a great book.

Love the avatar Sim. Are you still travelling?

I did Sim and I love it!
Have you been through Jerusalem on your travels Sim?
-
Thanks Cookie!
Haven't been to Jerusalem. If I could get a personal tour by Yotam and Sami I'd be there in a heart beat. I bought the book in Berlin and lugged it around with me. Bit silly, as you need to buy certain pantry items to cook most of the recipes.
I'm living in the UK at the moment. In the new year I'll start doing weekend trips to various countries in Europe before I head back to Australia. I'm definitely missing Australian sunshine, coffee, food and culture!
-
Keep enjoying it Sim. It is a wonderful experience.
