Title: Too much baking powder?
Post by: Cuilidh on March 24, 2025, 07:37:18 pm
I recently copied this recipe off Facebook and am wondering about the baking powder - does 1 tbs seem right to you?

120 g rolled oats(1 1/2 cup)
250 ml hot milk(use your favorite) 1 cup
leave to soak 10 minutes
2 medium ripe bananas
2 eggs / or vegan substitute
4 tablespoons cocoa/ carob powder(45 g)
a pinch of salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
40 g nuts (1/3 cup)
bake for 40 minutes at 180°C /360°F

Does seem a lot, I would think 1 teaspoon but would need to check similar recipes.

Did check, and 1 tablespoon does seem correct. Would need to check if American recipe as their tablespoon is closer to our dessert spoon.

Thanks for your follow up.

I made the recipe at the weekend with 1 1/2 tsps and it seemed OK.  I just felt that the larger baking powder quantity would leave a taste in the cake.   Anyway, it worked OK with 1 1/2 tsps but, just out of curiosity I might make it again with 2 - 3 tsps and see what happens.

I think the recipe would be American, considering its source (Facebook)

If the recipe is American, then 2 teaspoons would be ok

Thanks Chookie.  I am happy to go with 2 tsps, it looks like a good option.

Marina, I think you are correct when you said that you would taste the large amount of baking powder.
