Title: What can you use instead of Custard Powder
Post by: caminbear on August 22, 2009, 03:42:04 am
Just wondering what you can use instead of Custard Powder for things like YO YO Biscuits ?
Does anyone have any ideas. I just tasted the most amazing yo yo biscuits but they use custard powder in the recipe.
Surely there is an alternative ?
Cheers
Claire

Claire I have wondered the same thing as I have a lot of baking recipes that are tried and tested by my family that use custard powder and would love to replace it and make them again but I haven't been able to find any information.... Perhaps our wonderful Thermomixer might have an idea  ??? ??? ???

How about cornflour and yellow food colouring - I know you guys don't like artificial flavourings etc but if you want yellow...?

JD it is the yellow colouring in custard powder that I am trying to avoid!! Also actually want a flavour for my recipes as some of them just need that flavour really lol that is what is making it so hard to think of a replacement  :-))

Welcome caminbear - see it's your first post.  So some more info please - do you have problems with egg, the artificial goo in the powder?

Cornflour (not wheat cornflour) as JD suggested to give that texture - maybe some extra vanilla flavouring,  Do you use egg substitute?

Not sure what needs substituting.  ???

Neither am I that is the problem, what is the flavour you get when you use it in cakes, muffins and biscuits??  ??? ??? ??? ??? They just aren't the same with out it, yet I can't put my finger on it for a replacement  :-)) :-)) Might try the extra vanilla and see how that goes - I only use (corn) cornflour and do use eggs so extra vanilla could possibly be the thing  :)

Hi Kathryn
A few web sites suggest vanilla pudding mix (I assume the instant vanilla pudding mix/powder in packets), although I suspect this might have nasty additives as well!  Most other suggestions were as you say: cornflour and vanilla.  :)
Hope your little DS is better too, like everyone the dreaded "lurgies" have been through our household as well (though not requiring hospital stays thankfully!).  Glad to have you back as always appreciate yours and other 'experienced' users posts. :D

I do have a Yo Yo Recipe without Custard Powder - just not converted yet. It's on my list...

But if you'd like to convert and perhaps post back on the forum..??

175g butter softened
1/4 cup icing sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup plain (all purpose) flour, sifted
1/4 cup cornflour, sifted

Filling
60g butter, softened
1 cup icing sugar
2 teaspoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind.

Preheat oven to 180C (perhaps 160 for fan-forced??).  Place the butter, icing sugar and vanilla in a bowl and beat with electric beaters until light and fluffy. Stir in the flour and cornflour until combined.
Place the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a fluted nozzle. Pipe 3cm rounds onto a baking tray lined with non-stick baking paper, allowing room for spreading. Cook for 12-14 mins or until golden. Cool on trays.

To make the filling, place icing sugar, lemon rind into bowl and pulverise for 10 seconds on speed 10.  Add butter and lemon juice and rind in a bowl and beat speed 4  ??? until fluffy and creamy. Pipe onto half the biscuits and sandwich with the remaining biscuits.

Makes 16 filled biscuits.

Funny how biscuits differ from state to state.  Here in Sth Aust our yoyo biscuits are single, oval shaped biscuits. I'd show you a picture if I knew how as I have some in the pantry at the moment.

Thanks Everyone for your replies.
My main problem with custard powder is the colouring 102 and 110 - nasty stuff ! So I try and avoid it.
Maybe I will try corn flour and vanilla and let you know what its like , could be something to do today  :)

My youngest has an egg allergy so I use this one. :)

I would try with cornflour vanilla and an egg yolk for the colour.

Yes or even many local supermarkets. :)

If you have trouble there just ask Orgran for local stockists!

I had thought of that too Shayla, but I do try to steer away from as much egg as possible too as DS4 has an egg allergy...he is managing to tolerate very small amounts periodically. They say he doesn't have an allergy and yet when they test him they are blown away with the results. Has happened 3 times now

It could be that he is allergic to the egg white and not the yolks. My housekeeper had an allergy to eggs and could only tolerate if totally cooked ie in a cake - after about 15 years she can suddenly eat eggs again - also when tested they said she didn't have an egg allergy -these things can be very strange.

Looks like that link no longer works...
Try this one (http://www.orgran.com/products/170/) instead. You can buy it online, or in health food stores and also in some supermarkets.
