Thanks for signing up for all the latest news about the opening of The Fat Duck restaurant at Crown Melbourne.
We’ve received overwhelming interest in the new restaurant and in order to be as fair as possible, we’re excited to announce that there will be an electronic ballot to reserve a table.
BALLOT DURATION
9.00am Wednesday 8 October to 11.59pm Sunday 26 October 2014 (AEST).
Be prepared for a 4 hour, 14 course dining experience. From $525 per head* this is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity.
When I first read it, I thought it was $225 per head. Obviously I was dreaming! I am still putting in for it though - as are all my family - what a lovely family re-union that will be! None of us live in melbs and we all have young kids that will need babysitters...............but it's cheaper then flying to the UK I guess!
-
OMG $525 per head. A meal for 4 would buy you a thermomix. I don't think I could do that. Sorry. :-\
-
Oh wow that is so so expensive. That's more than my fortnightly grocery shop to feed 6 people.
-
I have a couple of friends who have eaten at the Fat Duck in Berksire. They both loved the dinning experience but I thought they were mad paying that much money. They both reminded me they were special occasions, one was on their honeymoon and the other was celebrating a very special Anniversary.
-
I think it's wonderful if you can easily afford it. You would certainly want to waddle out of the restaurant after ;D
If I was spending that sort of money I would maybe either hire a chef and have it at home, or do it myself (albeit not fine dining) and so no one has to bring a thing as it's all provided. That's me, but I like a less formal atmosphere and dressing casually/or smart casual for comfort.
Good on you though for organising it, any excuse to get the family together is a good one!
-
I couldn't do it either but if you can afford it, why not. I can't understand why they would need a ballot for something that expensive - there must be an awful lot of affluent people out there ;D Besides that, I couldn't eat 14 courses even if it was over a 4 hour period.
-
I believe they are very tiny portions Judy :D :D
-
... could be an interesting publicity stunt? That amount of money is pretty well our weekly budget for everything for the two of us but I very much hope you are successful and that you have a wonderful and memorable meal. Do let us know how it goes - it will be a very special night for you all.
-
I think that is ridiculous. Not my sort of special occasion. Go for it if that is your thing.
-
So, just over $1000 for a couple to have dinner. :o
I'd rather spend that on clothes shopping ;D
-
You gotta be jokin'
-
My first thought was "I hope you don't have to do a maccas run after dinner" (have heard some of these lotsa course dinners offer tiny portions and you go home hungry.)
But then I thought, WOW zebby, how awesome. Good that you can afford the dinner and no doubt it will be wonderful with your family, something to be enjoyed and please taste every morsel and report back!
:) Hope you get the winning tickets!
-
Oh, we'll be saving up for it! It is a once a year thing and it certainly means only opshopping for clothes all year. But for me, the experience will be worth it I think. We went to Quay this year - only $750 for dinner (! did include wines though) and frankly, it was worth absolutely every single cent and more. Just amazing - as my husband said - every mouthful is orgasmic........
Judy - the portion sizes are about 1 or 2 Tablespoons - but after 14 of them, a good degustation menu leaves you perfectly and absolutely satisfied.
-
It's not for me but I've got friends who have eaten there in the UK and loved it. Hope you win the ballot and enjoy the experience.
-
Still not for me thanks Zebby, that would be around 2 months grocery shopping for me but I can't wait to hear if your family was successful in the ballot and what you think of it. To get all your family on board in itself is amazing ;D
-
or possibly we are just all gut's?!
We are VERY fortunate with food costs as we have chooks, dad has wagyu, dorper and pigs and his own butcher shop and we are setting up a vegie garden this year so we can be pretty self sufficient with food - which will be VERY useful if we get into the habit of $1000 dinners :o
-
Lucky you zebby. Please tell all if you get in. When I heard they were opening in Melbourne I was interested, don't think I could pay that much though.
-
My first thought was No Way, but actually when I though more about it, DH and I have spent similar amounts on a night out or a weekend away - ours might have included show or concert tickets, flights to Auckland, and/or dinner (sometimes a night in a hotel too if we couldn't stay with my brother), but really if you consider this a night of entertainment as well as the food, well, lots of concerts are nearly that on their own, so it's not so surprising (still something very special though).
Just at the moment we have a big rush of things we have spent quite big dollars on - Neil Finn tomorrow night, Sound of Music on Sunday, WOW (world of wearable arts) awards next week, Dire Straits Experience in a couple of weeks....busy busy busy. We are certainly spending our year's worth of entertainment money in one burst, but it is doing what we love, so we are happy to spend it (and grateful we can).
-
Hope you are successful Zebby ;D It sounds like it would be a wonderful evening. :D
-
Zebby if you can afford it go for it. DD just spent a heap for a Robbie W show so why not. I can't wait to hear what you have. I hope you get selected.
-
Any luck in the ballot Zebby?
-
Friends got a seating, they are very excited.
-
No :(
A few friends did though so I will live through them.
On the upside, very good for the wallet!
-
Disappointing for you though.
-
Hubby tried to get in as a surprise for me. We didn't get the ballot. However we have had friends that have been and they say its not just a degustation its a full on show for nearly 5 hours. It sounds a lot but best seats at a show and dinner to follow wouldn't be much less.
:)

$225 for a meal does sound outrageous but for a once in a lifetime experience it may be worth it. But if it proves not worth it I would not tell anyone, I would just suck it up.
It costs less than a good seat at the opera at the Opera House in Sydney and there ain't no food .

I was lucky enough to go last week and it was an incredible experience. Expensive, yes. However, 5.5 hours of constant entertainment, the service far exceeded expectations and the food really was magical.
From start to finish it was a great experience that stimulated all the senses.
-
Great to hear you enjoyed it consumerate, something to remember.
-
I can imagine how wonderful it must have been. Well done.
-
So very lucky, a fantastic memory for you. We spent quite a few nights phoning from Aus to get into the one in the UK with no luck.
