Title: Onion Soup: recipe review TM5 Basic Cookbook UK version page 102
Post by: Cornish Cream on September 12, 2014, 05:37:03 pm
Again using the Recipe Chip I thought I would try this recipe to see if the onions would caramelize in the time given.No.Even with giving them an extra five minutes as suggested in the cookbook,no.
Although I did add a tablespoon of stock paste and not the teaspoon as suggested in the recipe it's still lacking flavour. :P
The recipe needs tweaking.
DH said it was just ordinary :-\

Oh no Denise, that's disappointing.

Thanks for trying this one Denise. For those who cook their onion on the stove top this would have been an important feature as far as they were concerned.  I never had any trouble caramelising my onions using Amanda's method.  I'm pretty sure that's what I used when making my caramelized onion & mushroom tarts http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=7770.0.  This process could be used for an onion soup recipe.

This is  an interesting point.  The chips sound magical.... but is there a function that allows you to mark  in your tweaks, suggestions , variations , corrections due to misprints, etc., as you would in  a hard copy book?

How disappointing CC.

You could alter the ingredients GF but the cooking time is automated if using the chip. You can go off program like I did to add an extra five minutes cooking to the onions but I then resume the recipe program again.
I'm not a techy so I can't answer the other questions  :-\

Thanks CC.  Look at as a learning experience in managing the Chip recipes.  With the Australian EDC book I use only 8 recipes and these with adaptions.  Might have to do the same with the Chip.

My understanding is that the new recipe book is the same as the chip and same the world over with the exception of language. If you make tweaks you will need to make them in the book as you can't save to the chip.

That is my understanding too Wonder. You can work from the chip but if you want to make an alteration to the recipe, then it means going off chip. It can depend on your alteration as to whether continuing back on chip is a good idea. Differences in ingredients and weight can make a difference in the timing. So far I have been particular in keeping to the chip to test it out. I tend to scale a lot of my recipes down to 1 or 2 portions and I may well find myself working from the book quite a bit which I might add is a shame as I find it really fun to work from the chip.

The UK book is quite different to the Australian one - just look at the index posted on this forum. I have the UK book with my machine here in South Africa so I was keen to compare the 2 - I believe the basis of the book is the same in each country with 80 or so country specific recipes.
