Title: Apple Cake: Recipe review TM5 -The Basic Cookbook UK version page 338
Post by: Cornish Cream on September 11, 2014, 06:58:30 pm
I used the Thermomix Recipe Chip method rather than follow the cookbook. The step by step instructions were very easy to follow and really helped you not to miss any ingredients.I loved the noise when the process was completed.
The scales are better.
Washing the bowl was will take a bit of getting use to as the lid seal is fixed. :P I always wash my bowl and parts by hand.
I used Brambly Apples and Calvados for the alcohol.
This recipe could be easily be made in the TM31 with maybe upping the time to 30seconds to mix the ingredients.

Looks good, CC.

Your comments will be of great interest to new TM5 users and those wondering about the usefulness of the recipe chip.

Thanks CC for sharing. I will be following your experience with the TM5 closely. What do you mean the seal is fixed? Is it not removable at all? Or replaceable?

Thanks CC, that looks good.

I read the seal isn't in the lid anymore.

Thanks CC.  Very useful info. Yes the seal is in the lid and it is fixed.

How can it be replaced if it can't be removed girls?  Maybe it doesn't need replacing?

Thanks CC, been looking forward to seeing what you made.  Keep those reviews and photos coming.

I may be proven wrong Judy, but saw the machine yesterday and the seal is incorporated into the lid.  Looks like when the seal goes you may have to get a new lid unless there is a magic way of taking off the lid!!!!
CC, thanks for the review.  The cake looks lovely.

I picked up some cheap green apples this morning. I think this is where they will go.

I made this this afternoon. Naturally I used the recipe in the Australian book, or from the Australian chip actually. I love using the recipes from the chip. It is so easy.
I sprinkled Molasses sugar over the cake before I cooked it. It was lovely with custard for dessert tonight. I used rum in mine, not brandy. I love the subtle flavour rum leaves in food.

They both look great. I'm starting to get impatient as well Chookie, although I'm so flat out at the moment probably wouldn't have any time to play with it anyway.

I made this cake yesterday and served it with custard for dessert.  It was tasty and looked really good but i was a little disapointed as it was a bit bland.  A lovely cake, but not quite enough for a dessert for me. I might serve it next time with a brandy sauce that i used to make from a WW cookbook.  Also chunks of apple through the acutal cake, or some small pieces of toffee or fudge would be really good.  I would also try substituting a 1/4 of the flour for ground almonds.

I used the recipe chip with the cookbook open as a guide to check from.  I doubled the recipe and just upped the mixing time a little.  It was very easy to make - although peeling 7 apples was a bit time consuming -  and perfectly made 2 cakes.

I love using the recipe chip.  You feel confident that you will get to the end of the recipe and everything will be in there.  Even if you are recipe adapting (like i always seem to!) it keeps you on track with the basic recipe.

Update to above.  I had frozen one of the 2 cakes I made (see above).  It came out perfectly i felt reheated.  I served it with the WW brandy sauce and it gave it a richness that made it "special".  I got more compliments than when I'd made it fresh.
I'll definitely be making this again.

Yes, I think the recipe looks a bit bland too. so I might go against my own rule to follow the chip exactly in this case and add a little something to enhance it. I am supposing that one can just leave the peel on the apples and I am tempted to do this. The sliced apple popping up certainly gives this cake a posh look for visitors. Memories of Sydney opera house came flooding in.
