ILB, yes here it is. I converted to make in the TM.
IRISH BROWN YEAST BREAD - Donal Skehan
450g wholemeal plain flour
430g water
2 tsp instant dried yeast
1 tsp treacle
1 tsp salt
Small handful of mixed seeds
Oil and flour a loaf tin (21x11x6cm). Preheat oven 220 C.
Place water and treacle into TM bowl and heat 37 C/2 mins/speed 3. Until heated and treacle has dissolved.
Add flour, salt & yeast and combine on speed 3/20 secs (will be a wet mixture).
Drop into the prepared tin, sprinkle with seeds and cover with cling wrap or a damp tea towel.
Place in a warm spot for approx 20 mins. (I left 35 till reached top of tin).
Bake for approx 45-50 mins. (check with a skewer after about 25 mins, mine looked almost done, so took out of tin and placed on oven rack for a few more mins.
Donal's notes:
This bread is very moist and will last for up to a week. You can store it in an airtight container. It also freeze brilliantly for up to a month, so you could also make a few extra to save for later.
Perfect to serve with a hearty soup or made into a chunky sandwich.

I made this today and loved it. The crumb is different to many other breads however it certainly doesn't affect the taste. I will definitely be making this again and again. A longer review can be found here. http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?board=40.0

Wow, a blast from the past Cookie! :D
Yours looks lovely. :D I must make it again when I next make soup. ;D
-
Just perfect for soup and slurping up casserole juices. That's what I am doing with some of it tonight.
-
Sounds great Cookie, enjoy! :D
-
Why is the crust so shiny Julie? Great looking loaf Cookie, nice crumb.
-
I've no idea Judy. I can't remember, it's so long ago (since I made it). I will report back when I make it as to whether it happened with me too. :)
-
Looks lovely with its shiny surface and so even inside.
-
Gert, is this the one you're looking for? :)
-
The loaf of bread looks sensational Cookie :o I gotta try this ;D
-
Me too. So it's just plain wholemeal flour not bakers wholemeal?
-
I was searching for JuliOs so the search engin couldn't find it. Thanks CC? A better search engin would be nice. It looks a simple recipe but the shine intrigues me.

Gert
Me too Gert, can't remember that. Will have to make again to find out ;D
Judy, yes plain flour. The recipe came from this book, he's an Irish cook.

I see what attracted you to that book Julie :D Thanks for that info.
-
;D

Bakers are getting younger by the year!
-
I didn't grease and flour my tin as it is a true bread tin and doesn't need it. I wonder if that is why it was so shiny. We have just had some more of the bread with leftovers from last night.
-
Had to make the Irish Yeast Bread.
I nearly dropped it as I was putting it in the oven and that I think is why if fell in the middle. I Did get the shine on it but of course not on the bottom as I had to put baking paper in my bread tin bottom as this tin has small holes in it and it is a very wet dough.

This is really good.
-
Even with your mishap Gert it looks delicious 8)
-
I am going to make this, the wholemeal flour is on my shopping list for next week.
-
This looks delicious.
-
Yes Judy you HAVE to make this one.
Gert
-
Gert that looks wonderful and I love your presentation and step photos, thank you! :D
-
Seen the photo of Gerts loaf she made on Facebook today. Looks absolutely lovely. Will be putting this on my to do list when my TM come back from hospital. :)
-
Oh my, this does look good. Thanks for all the photos. Will have to give this a go. Need plain wholemeal flour.
-
Chookie this is an interesting bread full of flavour. I did make a small mistake and added a tablespoon of treacle instead of a teaspoon but I doubt it made a significant difference. DH's is devouring more of it as I type and he is not much of a bread man.
Gert
-
I agree Gert. It is really easy and the flavour is wow! I was worried that the treacle would make it sweet but it hasn't. I'm going to use molasses next time. Probably over the weekend.
-
The $6 jar of treacle I had to buy will last me two lifetimes! I do have some molasses which I bought a couple of years ago to make pumpernickel bread when I was gifted that Jewish Baker book by a forum member. I use it all the time , the cookbook that is and the molasses is still in the fridge. Yup I will try that one too.

I had to try this too.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/27/su5ubeny.jpg)

Looks wonderful ES 8)
-
What did you think ES?
Gert
-
Very easy loaf to make, and now I can report that it tastes great too. Got. Thumbs up from DD this morning and I nicked the crust for brekky this morning- it was lovely and crunchy toasted
-
Looks wonderful ES, glad you liked it too :D
-
Lovely loaf ES.
-
Great loaf ES.
-
Made this loaf this morning but think I should have cooked it a bit longer - I did 35 mins and it was 207oF when I checked it with a thermometer. How long did you girls cook yours for please? Tastes great and will be used for toasting so not a problem. I would use a slightly bigger loaf pan next time because as you can see, it spilled out over one edge slightly.
Easy as, thanks Julie.
Update, had a piece for lunch with soup - it seemed cooked well enough, delicious. How I managed to stop at 1 piece I don't know.
-
A great loaf Judy 8)
-
Thanks Denise, my first ever wholemeal loaf, I'll make 2 next time ;)
-
It looks great Judy. Another loaf to add to the repertoire.
-
It's nice to do something different isn't it Cookie. I must admit I don't bake much white bread much these days and have been buying wholemeal instead.
-
I made this for lunch today too. And Judy, unlike you, I didn't stop at one piece. DH gobbled it too. Just don't tell him it has whole meal flour in it. He thinks the treacle makes it brown!!(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/29/u9a3a4ap.jpg)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/29/utu6ehy6.jpg)
Oh and I didn't add seeds as there would be no way DH would have tried it!
-
Lovely loaf Kimmy. 8)
-
They look lovely Judy & Kimmy.
I'm going to have to make this soon.
-
Me too Katie.I bought the flour this morning to try it ;D
-
Honestly I don't know what makes this bread so delicious but it just is.
Gert
-
Isn't it wonderful how such a little gem has come to light because of the challenge. None of us can resist a nice loaf of bread LOL.
-
It looks Delish!
-
My DH is ok with seeds but DD won't touch it. However she ate this. As you say the treacle makes it brown. ;D ;D
-
Wow, you girls are great trying this, thanks so much. :D
-
Mmmmm. I made this again yesterday. Wholemeal flour was on special at the supermarket
-
I have this cooling at the moment.Mine came out square :D :D :D As usual I went OTT with the poppy seeds :-))

-
It looks fantastic CC.
-
I love this loaf, it's so tasty. Mine is now 5 days old and I didn't freeze it as I normally do my bread. Still going strong, using it for toast now. It seems to take twice as long to brown up but does so beautifully in the end.
-
Such a lovely loaf. Aren't we lucky to have people to share these great recipes.
Gert
-
Lovely looking loaf Cornish. I love poppy seeds on bread too :D
Judy, that's good to hear that it is lasting so long :D
Thanks Gert. :-*
-
After reading all the comments on this bread I had to have a go. I made mine yesterday and I only got to taste one slice. The family arrived and ate the rest. A lovely bread and I will be making it again. Sorry, no photos I didn't get a chance to take one. :D
-
Thanks for the feedback Mab, glad you and your family enjoyed it. :D
-
I made another batch of this today as we were out of bread. It is quick and easy to make and tastes good.
-
Finally got around to making this today.
As I was making it I couldn't help thinking this isn't how you make bread! It sort of goes against everything I've learnt about bread baking from the forum and reading books, but it makes a really tasty loaf of bread. The texture is different from other bread I've made, but it's really quick, easy and delicious.
We had it today for lunch - chicken, lettuce & mayo sandwiches. The were lovely.

-
I think we all agree with you Katie.
-
I felt much the same way with this one, then with Chookie's Soda Bread too. They taste yum, so that's fine by me.
-
Yup it is really a lovely bread.
