Title: Pre-newbie in Toronto Canada
Post by: LauraTO on February 04, 2014, 09:54:45 pm
Hello everyone,
I'm so new I actually haven't even had my demo yet, how keen can I be?!  It's a few days away, but I already know I'm sold.

I first heard of Thermomix during a trip to Australia last year, and I've been obsessed ever since.  What really sold me was cantaloupe sorbet made in about 10 seconds flat. When the hostess made powdered icing sugar from coarse raw sugar I think my jaw pretty much hit the floor.

Thermomixes don't seem to be at all common here in Canada (yet), but I've been reading these forums, watching youtube videos galore and of course reading tons of blogs.

I can't eat gluten or eggs, so I'm especially excited about the possibilities for my somewhat limited but very healthy diet (well, I try!)

Right now I'm a heavy slow cooker user (I use it almost every day) and while I don't think the thermomix can completely replace it, I'm excited to have so many options for quick dinner that don't need SO much pre-planning.

Looking forward to reporting my progress, asking millions of questions, and learning the ins and outs of my soon to be purchased Thermie!

@cookie I love Helene's blog, and that's actually what led me here!

I've been saving up my money every month- I actually have a box on my dresser where I have been stashing my cash (hope locals burglars aren't reading this) and it's the first time I've actually saved up cash for something since I was a kid!

Now that I'm finally near my target, I booked the demo.  I knew it would be game over if I booked the demo before i had finished saving, and then I'd have a credit card bill to feel guilty about.

I think before the demo I need to do a pantry clean-out of unhealthy packaged things that I won't use anymore!  Any suggestions?!

Well done on the savings!
I waited 4 years from when I first saw a thermomix (also on holiday in Aus) until finally buying - at first they weren't available here, and then had to save.  You will find it pays off in no time - we have lower food bills, very infrequent takeaways, more homemade lunches, as well as (mostly) healthier food ;)

The first place I saw one was in a friend's house and she is gluten-free and found it amazing.  It definitely increased her options as she could more easily make wheat-free versions of her old favourites.

Have fun at the demo...and of course when your new machine arrives!

Welcome to the forum, Laura.  If it wasn't for the wonderfully open and helpful people on this forum I wouldn't be using my TMX nearly as much as I do.  Always feel free to ask questions and you will usually get several replies and suggestions fairly quickly.

I'm so excited, my demo is in just 2 hours. Not sure what to expect exactly, but I really can't wait to see what this TM can do in person!

I asked the consultant how long I would have to wait for delivery if I decided to purchase, and she said "oh, about 15 minutes?" Lol

Obviously my demo went well, in fact even better than I expected!  It was just me and a good girlfriend who is enthusiastic but has ZERO cooking experience.  I was very curious on her opinion of the TM.

Monika arrived and started things off with a lemon drink with parsley cloves and ginger which was lovely.  Following that we tried an avocado and cheese spread which was very nice and I would absolutely make and serve to guests.

And then she made the most delicious cauliflower salad!  I don't even really like cauliflower but this was one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten.  (Thank goodness she emailed me the recipes after!) Perfect for work lunches, to bring to a BBQ.  Yum!

And then she showed off the Varoma with a lovely chicken dish, with sweet potatoes in the basket and steamed fresh veggies on the top tray.  That's when my friend really started to take interest, since it seems so simple and wonderful to be able to come home from work, set your dinner and then go have a shower or throw a load of laundry in or just to kick up your feet and watch the news.

Monika really emphasized fresh and healthy foods, which was perfect for me.   I was thrilled to be able to say "heck yes" and sign on the dotted line!

My friend, although interested, isn't quite ready to make such a big investment.  I honestly didn't expect her to even consider it, but I think she's going to have a demo at her place for her and her husband, and Monika said I could come too and she'd teach us even more of her amazing healthy recipes!!

Now time to get cooking!!!  I need to get groceries first I think!

I know, the consultant had 4 of them in the back of her van.  I seriously hope her van never gets stolen, yikes!!

I am pleased to report that I am sitting down to eat a bowl of delicious soup I made in my new TM!  I have heard that advice that at first it's better to stick with the recipes until you get the methods down, but before I get groceries I was kind of limited with what I had, plus I don't eat gluten so couldn't use a couple of recipes I found online.  So I sort of modified a few recipes I found and came up with....drumroll....potato leek bacon and goat cheese soup.  Just delish!!!

Thanks so much everyone. I don't know a single soul other than my consultant who has a TM so I know I'll be on this board a lot with questions and hopefully to share some successes!

Hi Laura and welcome. So glad you found Helene's blog. I am originally from Syracuse and know Toronto well.

My daughter has Crohn's disease and finds her Thermomix invaluable. You will be using it every day for sure. Good saving and good purchase.
