This is something I only heard about this morning on the ABC Breakfast Show. Thought maybe someone was trying to tell me something after my post in the Shopping Thread . . . ;D ;D
For those interested, have a look at this sites . . . I'm in for giving it a go . . not sure I could do it for 12 months though. We'll see . . .any takers?? ;D ;D

can i buy smokes ?
-
I would like to try that.
I'm sure you could as they are consumables Uni. :D
-
i will give it a go
-
Oh Dear - that is a big ask - hmmmm.........will have to think about it for a while;
-
I could try a very abridged version maybe. Maybe not.
-
I'm thinking if I can put the money I would have spent on any said items in a jar . and see what it all adds up at the end of the month. The other day I spent $7.50 on a food magazine (must have been mad!! - won't do that again!! - I hope!!) - that would have been a good start :-))
-
Yes GF I know what you mean. I could do something like that too. Maybe I could also sell a couple of things I no longer need and give some more away....
-
Retail traders are not going to be happy girls, you know how they scream when sales figures are down. Good luck to those who are going to try it, it can't be hard for a month unless there's a birthday present you need to buy.
-
I think I could shop out of my freezers, pantry for 2 months.. :o :o
-
Magazines certainly are expensive G.F. Does your library have them online? I get loads of magazines online at the library, it's not quite the same but I've found it ok.
I have my friends birthday coming up in 2 weeks - I can always make a basket (of which I have several) of homemade goodies.
-
I'm trying to cut down on waste....and trying to only buy things that we will genuinely use. I'm turning our disused and unloved 1/2 court tennis court which takes up a lot of the backyard (it came with the house!) into a garden with raised garden beds. I'm hoping that within 12 months I will be getting most of our vegetables out of there. I'm so sick of buying produce from Coles and Woolworths and throwing things out a few days later when they are rotten. I want to be able to go out and just pick what we need for the day......although I may have to stop nibbling as I wander around watering....I've made considerable inroads into the blueberries, strawberries and tomatoes lately...oops
-
Stacelee, jolly good idea. It is great to be able to pick fresh veggies from the garden. Saves a fortune and so much better for you.
Glad I have only just read this as I have been shopping like there are no tomorrow's. ( while Ral in hospital). I bought a cast iron cooking pot for 1/2 price, a couple of bread tins, several tops to wear and a visit to that interesting shop, Essential Ingredient, where I bought several NON Essential ingredients, such as red rice and coconut sugar. Good reason to stop.
Thanks Goldfish, good idea.
-
I have no problems with no clothes or cooking appliances etc. not sure I could go without the fresh produce though. In face now I no longer work I don't buy too many clothes etc. only when I am in Singapore. ;) ;)
Since being retired and on a fixed income I do think several times about my purchases.
-
Like the $100 food challenge I like things like this to get me thinking about how it can do things better & save money, so will definitely question myself this month on what I'm buying 😄

Arrhh - while the cat's away Chookie. Very sensible really, to shop while you're in town, it will save unnecessary trips and petrol when you are back and settled at home.
I love The Essential Ingredient - we have one in Newcastle and they have a really good cooking school.
-
I would love to be able to commit to this and so would my DH. However, to have any chance of success, I would need to have no access to the Internet, not go to work (i have impulse buys during my lunch hour) and no access to the shops.
-

Chookie, for you, all these sound like very essential ingredients - and therefore quite acceptable!!! ;D ;D
-
I am only buying fruit, veges, milk this month...
-
Several weeks ago I ran out of brown wrapping paper that I use to wrap and send my ebay sales off in. Brown paper isn't expensive but I was looking at the many, many rolls of Christmas wrapping paper I have due to the fact that I run out and buy it half price after Christmas, regardless of whether or not I need it (then when Christmas comes around again it doesn't match my colour scheme) so I turned it around to the plain white side and have been wrapping items for postage in that and it's worked out very well.
-
A very sensible thing to do Mich. I buy mine at the sales too.
-
I buy mine at half price too.
I now need to go through and clean out the kids toys to give away.
-
Well, I'm starting to think about Xmas presents, so probably won't have a no spend month, but definitely aiming to buy nothing else, and be quite strict on the presents this year.
Obbie, I need to do that too, but the kids suddenly find a new love for every little thing. I have managed to get out the Thomas train set which DS says I can sell. Will have to wait until they are back at school/kindy and do a covert mission! ;)
-
I try to involve the kids when having a clear out but like you jo it ends up with them playing with there new favorite toy so I generally try it when they are at school ::)
-
Our kids are getting older, and want more tech things, so only lego for toys now.
-
I haven't read this thread (too scared to do that because I have been so so so bad) - I have bought so many things this past couple of days, mainly in relation to my unexpected and unwanted trip to NZ tomorrow - that's the way I am justifying it, anyway. Will do penance and read the whole thread when I get back home next week!
-
I'm in. I did order some birthday presents for my sister and brother in law, but I resisted and didn't order anything for myself.
-
Marina.. I think under the circumstances, whatever you've bought would come under "essentials".... No penance needed.....:)

Thanks, I don't feel quite so bad now.
-
I have read this thread with interest....blown it already to participate
-
I'm feeling the strain - I want to buy some more craft supplies for Christmas cards. The Op Shops are always a great alternative for buying ribbon, lace etc and you often get some lovely vintage items at next to nothing.
-
Well technically Christmas cards are given in December, so I don't think it would count as an October spend ;)
-
Thankyou Maddy - I love loophole. :D
-
Love that loop hole too Maddy, I ordered a chair for DH in July and they told me it would be Aug/Sept delivery still has not arrived so I guess it will be October. Blown it for October :D
-
I went out to lunch with a friend and had no intention of going Into Tea 2 or Ts but...........
Gert
-
Oh Gert, you didn't ;D
-
Gert did :D :D What is your favourite ?
-
Plain old black tea is my favourite - sorry Gert, I'm boring ;D
-
Well I wanted some lemon grass to add to other things and they just had some in. Then I asked for a low tannin! low caffeine Nd guess what?? Three people said Daintree at once so of course I had to have it just up the road I could go to the plantation.
And Ts had a purple dress 1/2 price so what is a girl to do?
Gert
-
I can well understand you wanting the purple dress Gert, you can't be seen wearing the same one to all the purple hat ladies events.
-
Gert did :D :D What is your favourite ?
I have 16 teas now and I love them all at different times of the day. Crazy for someone who had no tea in the house a few months ago. My latest favourite in oolong iron goddess of mercy or maybe French Earl Grey.
Gert
-
I think once your over fifty, have been married forever, were on a tight budget when you had young children, worked weekends, afternoons and nights to make ends meet - we are past spending nothing - earned are rights to a few of the special things in life that bring us pleasure. :D
-
That is the truth mcmich. One year I worked 33 Saturdays I had more nights on call than I care to remember not to mention night duty and up until about 16 months ago I have not bought any new clothes apart from underwear in about 8 years. My wardrobe consisted of singlets and shorts and the odd and I mean odd going out outfit.
Gert
-
Well, you always look great Gert :D
We have paid our dues, and if tea or craft items bring us pleasure - then so be it.
Having said that - I'm still going to use up my craft items first before buying more. :D
-
I'm doing pretty well, but DH brought the mail in today and said "I don't know what's happening, that's the third Australia post parcel collection slip we have received in two days, there must be some mistake, you just picked up two parcels..." "Hmm very interesting..." I have the said parcel slips and will be heading to the post office to collect my 3 parcels. Dare I tell him I'm expecting another two...
-
I love it BB. Gert, Daintree is one of our all time favourites in this house. It is a lovely black tea. I think my afternoon cuppa will be pomegranate. :D
-
I think it will be a good evening tea but it is light on flavour. Funny how we choose the tea for our mood or how we feel. I am right into tea now. Also got an invite to a special tea demo evening next week at Tea2. They call me by name now. Cah Ching!

More teas for me to try, thanks Gert
-
I haven't bought anything, but I want to.... :D

Love it Michele. I'm going to have to frame this so DH can read and understand :D :D :D

And I'm definitely going to T2 next week (tho I am not a VIP like Gert ;D)
-
I've failed in a big way. I thought I wouldn't be buying anything much but then DD and I saw some Sandler shoes marked down to half price. Of course I love Sandlers, find them comfortable, they were my size and were very comfy on. Need I say more. I now have my umpteenth pair of shoes.
-
never have too many pairs of shoes cookie;D;D
I had failed by the 3rd of October with our new washing machine, dryer and 3D tv, so no point stopping now::)
-
Maybe we can make November "Nospender" instead!!! :D :D
-

With Christmas on it's way? ;D ;D ;D
-
10 weeks to christmas :D :D
-
I'll fail in November for sure as DD has holidays and she is thinking of going somewhere over East and I think I am invited too. ;D ;D

That will be nice Cookie ;) Will it be Singapore ;)
-
Singapore would be north and west a bit . It think DD and cookie are coming East and North to visit ME!! Then again she may have meant East Asia which is still west and north of us and that would maybe be Singapore.Wasn't that trip aborted last year?
Gert ;D ;D
-
My pick is Melbourne or Sydney - is it cookie?

-
My pick would be Sydney or Brisbane. Cookie who's correct?
-
Very much as I would love to come and see you it may be getting a bit warm for me and after the photo of that snake No way!
I think it may be Melbourne at the moment. She hasn't shared it yet. She will when she wants me to pay up. We are using our airfare money from the aborted Singapore trip before we lose it.
-
Yea it is hot cookie. It was 28 in my bedroom with the fan on last night . I really wanted to put the air con on but held out.
Melbourne will be nice though.
Gert
-
air con on here Gert... :D

Spending the kids inheritance uni ;D ;D This doesn't make you a bad person.

Can't wait to see that. Didn't know you spoke Japanese chookie ;D
Gert
-
Cookie hopefully Melbourne weather will pick up a bit before you come, we have had some really cold days the last week.
Uni, enjoy it while you can you worked hard to get to this point.
Chookie, can't wait to see what you make from for the bento boxes.
-
I went to a tea2 event last evening and had NO intention of buying anything but did of course. Came away with another tea plus a jug for making ice tea. They had a lovely goodie bag as well.
Goodie bag

Yes....I think this thread needs to be deleted :P LOL

i have been a bad bad girl, i booked 2 hoildays for next year and also the no odd sock thingy
So where are you off to Uni and please explain the 'no odd sock thingy' - I don't know where I've been but I have no idea what that is.
Chookie - Bento box, what's that :P
Gert - love your new addiction, I can't get my head around the fact you have more cuppas these days than glasses of wine ;) Do you have Fruitalicious amongst your collection? I bought that one during the forumfest and I'm waiting for a heatwave to try it as iced tea. One hot day is not enough for me to want to drink cold tea but I figure a few days in a row might do it for me. Do you have your teas hot or cold?
-
Judy, bento box is a Japanese lunch box. It has several small compartments and each contains a small tasty snack. I will take a photo of one as Paul is taking me out to Japanese for lunch today. I think you would like it.
-
Thanks Chookie, don't know what I would do with one though - I haven't used a lunch box for what seems like forever.
Good luck with today, hope all goes to plan. Enjoy your lunch and the ride home.
-
I love all tea hot and cold. I do not like the fruit stuff or sweet anything but having said that I did enjoy the Fruit infusions last night. One woman said she made cold teas for her children from the fruity things with no sugar. She then added ice cubes a and real fruit and a scant amount of mineral water or low joule lemonade . She said it got the kids drinking healthier things when they has had enough of water. As they drank the jug she kept filling it with water so they were getting nearly water after a couple of days. Good idea.
We separated into three groups and were told to choose 10 teaspoons from a range of 10 teas and make our own iced tea. Our group chose Teriffic Toffee and Turkish Apple and called it Toffee Apple. The other groups chose 3 different teas and made their ice tea. Ours was quite Tangy and not too sweet. 4 of Teriffic Toffee and 6 of the other add ice, our tea won and will be featured for the rest of the month.
You can try any and every tea in the shop. Great marketing and lovely knowledgable staff. Learned that many teas can be Re brewed up to five times.
Another said she used the fruit "teas" for baking and I understand why as they bore no resemblance to the dried fruits you usually see which are sprayed with some disgusting compound to make them look more appealing. You can buy boxes of dried lavender buds and rose buds which are great for baking of course and no added anything. I recently bought some dried lemongrass to use in cooking. Nice.
-
Sounds great Gert. I have never been to a T2 shop not sure if there is one close to me must look it up.
-
Sounded like a good night out Gretchen and great that you were in a winning team with your ice-tea blend.
-
I had a couple of pics chookie so will post these. Can't wait to see what you have for lunch. Bento boxes are great for kiddies lunches too.

Here is a kiddie one . Japanese pride themselves in making the most beautiful Bento Box
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/10/16/memedy7u.jpg)
There is quite and interesting history of the obento.
Gert
-
I can just see my DD packing a lunchbox like that for the kids Gert - NOT ;D Japanese Mums must get up very early to do fancy things like that for their kids. Great photos, thanks for posting.
-
Bento box lunches are lovely. DD went to Japan for a month a couple of years ago and loved it.
I went into T2 this morning Gert. I already have one of the jugs you bought but did buy this.
I also bought this as I felt it had lots of recipes I will try.
-
I love that thing cookie but I really don't need it. Great for tea lovers. How will you use it?
Gert
-
Cookie, does that have a strainer in it? I have a mug with a strainer in it and it is a pain in the $##* to get the tea leaves out.
-
I plan to use it for small amounts of iced tea Gert.
Marie it has a strainer container thing on the bottom. I haven't used it yet so hopefully it won't be too hard to clean.
-
Thanks Cookie, wil be interested to hear what you think about it. I only make tea for myself so am looking for something a bit better than what I am currently using.
-
It is called the tea maker and it has one way valve on the bottom so when you place it on a cup or glass it dispenses from the bottom. You can also pour from it and just turn it upside down to toss the leaves.
I really like my glass tea mug with a handle . It has an infuser with lid which lifts out with a handle for just rinsing under the tap. It holds about 500 mls
Gert
-
That sounds really good Gert, weeeeeeeeeeell here I go again :-))
-
This is starting to look like a confession topic area where people start to fess up! ;D ;D ;D
Or the new shopping thread lol
😄😄😄
-
Oh dear it really has Jeninwa. Well may as well say. I just downloaded The Tes Enthusiast's Handbook on kindle but will read it on my iPad as there are coloured pics.
Gert
-
I love this for a quick cup of tea. Chookie put me onto it last year at the Retreat. It is from T2.
-
That looks interesting Cookie, what is it called? Cannot find it on the website.
-
It is a scoop infuser. Haven 't seen it in gold before. Very handy.
Gert
-
Thanks Gert, will see if I can find something like it.
-

Thanks Uni, a useful item - I've lost count of the lost socks in my lifetime of washing.
Enjoy the holidays, you don't seem to stay home for long ;D
-
Too funny. I had to round up some socks for Dh for our trip to Hobart. Usually we only wear sandals .
-
Does he have any warm clothes Gert?
-
Tapa talk won't let me post a photo. Think it is sulking after being in my sons hi tech house. Will try and send Judy photo oh Bento box.
-

Ha fooled it. Chookie is smarter than machine.
This is my Bento Lunch box
-
Looks delicious and I love how they present it all.
-
Lovely bento box chookie. Looks delish.
Judy our friends have warm clothes if needs be. When they come here we have to clothe them in tropical gear!
Gert
-
Looks good Chookie, interesting concept.
It's nice you are able to share your clothes with visitors Gert.
-
It sounds like the perfect solution.
