I picked up this hint (http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2013/09/line-measuring-cups-with-plastic-wrap-when-measuring-wet-ingredients/) today on an interesting web site I just discovered yesterday, lifehacker.com.au - it has a real mix of different and informative topics to browse through:
Measuring butter or shortening almost always results in a little bit of waste, since you can’t dig every dollop out of your measuring cup or spoon. Make it easier to remove the ingredients with a piece of plastic wrap.
Before you measure out what you need, line the inside of your measuring cup / spoon with a piece of plastic wrap. Fill in as much as you need, then simply lift the plastic out and scrape/pour it off into the pot. Not only will this result in less waste, it will also leave you with a clean, dry measuring cup for the next thing you need to dole out.

Oh I hate washing the measuring cup after using if for butter etc - what a great tip - have to wonder why we didn't think of it ourselves.
