problem is that if you stuff up early on there's no point in recording the rest of the recipe as it might not work with changes IYKWIM lol

Necessity is the mother of invention though and I seem to have that down pat after all these years! (ie if it doesn't work out the way you originally hoped... call it something else and pretend that's what you were doing anyhow! ;))

She certainly has no fear of the machine, our dear Bron.  Glad I have inspired someone Karen - you must have been sitting back waiting for some little thing to click to start another poll. Glad I could help :-*

Good going ladies!!

I'm # 3 for by the seat of my pants - although I don't usually record it and have to start from scratch again next time... oops.

Seat of the pants is the only way I know. I made yoghurt curry last night it turned out really well but I will have to make it again before I can post the recipe because I kept adding time to the cooking of the onions I lost track.

I'm another 'seat of your pants'er  ;D  And all too often I forget to write down all of what I did!!!!  :o

Although the first few conversions I did involved reading recipes which were similar in the TMX books, and then trying that out for my recipe.  So can I pretend that I'm organised and think things through in advance?  ;)

I usually look through the EDC and find something a little similar (eg: if converting a meat recipe, I find a meat recipe to see an example of how to cook it), I then fly by the seat of my pants but record AS I am doing it (not before or after cooking).

Then, at the end, I jot down changes I would make next time to perfect it   ;D

I voted early on in this poll but have just realised I didn't add a comment so here goes.  I read a recipe right through then write down the whole recipe to how I think it should be converted for the TMX. I can't seem to look at any recipes these days without my little mind doing conversions. When I start the cooking, I just follow my 'new recipe', re-adjusting and recording any changes to my times as I go. I then re-write the recipe which has become very messy at this stage and if it tastes good, come into my computer and let you all know about it  ;) ;) ;)

Wish I was so organised JD - just read something from Geoff Slattery about doing exactly what you have outlined.  Take the recipe, write it out as you think you would do it and then go for it.

Queen of Converters .. yeah

I knew you'd do that whilst I was away for the weekendILB - glad you have joined us :D :D I think it is the passion for the TMX that earns us the stars but the TMX itself is the real star.

Thank you.
You're right JD - the TMX is amazing, and you can't help but be passionate about it.
Honestly I thought Hero status was 1000 posts...  ??? ;D

Last night I tried JD's way of converting and pre-planning. I'm happy to report that I think I'm converted too now  :D :D :D :D
Jokes aside - this went much more smoothly than if I had of tried converting as I went. Thank you JD!!  :-* :-* :-* :-*

Nah - I've got a large seat on my pants - so I'll probably continue to fly by that method.  ;D ;D ;D

Actually, truth is I love just looking at recipes and re-arranging them into TMX language.

I'm essentially lazy & lazier than ever since I discovered this site!!  I bought my TM because I couldn't cook - why would I start now???  Thank you to all you wonderful ladies & gentlemen who post such fantastic recipes here.  When I run out of inspiration I might attempt to convert something myself & will probably take the JD approach but definitely won't write it down - or if I did it would get covered in something wet & sticky because I am so messy!!!

If you don't have a super memory Jane at least write down the cups/spoons to grams conversions as you go. I can never remember them after.  Sadly though I always forget to write down one measurement and it always really bugs me.

Nice to re-read this one GoneCrazY - had forgotten it even existed since the forum has become so big. What a laugh I had at the old comments.  I still do it the way I always have, the first one on the list - adjusting as I go.

I do not make up any recipe myself, it is always converted. I like to photocopy it, and then I write all my conversions down over the photo copy, make it, (adjust if necessary) and then post the recipe.  To make the recipes more universal for everyone around the world I take my measurements from here (http://www.taste.com.au/how+to/articles/369/weights+measurement+charts) because its Australian and I have been adding my own to the list as I go along. I like to post weight measurements because its universal and it cuts down on washing up. I also like to make sure my ingredients are listed in the order that they used as it definitely helps to cut down any omissions from a recipe if you are not cutting to and forth.

I guess I can't add my vote to the poll because I probably have already done so  ???

I'm a seat of pants person here too.

Although I've only just started converting recipes.  It takes a while to get to know the machine well enough to start converting things - I posted my first "proper" conversion today actually!  :)  Although I've converted a couple of baking recipes and converted them back again for non TMX friends.

Unless a recipe was really complicated I wouldn't bother working out the steps before hand and, to be honest, I'm not sure I'd attempt something really complicated at the moment - I'm far too sleep deprived

CP63 - the option you chose will be bolded when you look at the poll.

I chose depends. Sometimes I will convert properly - taking a recipe and writing how I think it would be done. Other times I just fly by the seat of my pants - but that's more things I'm making up at the time rather than a conversion as such.
