Title: Creamed Rice
Post by: Nay-nay on July 22, 2009, 10:01:55 am
Looking for a recipe for creamed rice like in the can. It's for a friend who likes the TMX and buys this stuff all the time. Need to show her you can make it quick and easy at home! :)

I make the one from the EDCB but I use arborio rice and add craisins or sultanas for the last two minutes.  I made this for visitors a couple of weeks ago and my girlfriend said it tasted like creamed rice from a can!  I took that as a compliment and figured that it sounds like what you are looking for.

Regards

Except that it is better than the one from the can because you know you have made it yourself  :D :D :D I just make mine plain, DH doesn't like dried fruit - calls them animal droppings :-)) :-))

I prefer it to custard these days. Bit sick of that.

my kids liked the plain rice pudding (wouldn't touch my fancy one ;)) but dh won't eat it! says rice is for savoury LOL however he is a custard fiend... plus, 7 minutes vs what, 35 or 40 or something...

Made the mistake of using brown rice and it just didn't cook. :'( Will try arborio next time - it does sound like it would be like the one out the can. Good thinking 99! ;)

Good thinking 99!  - My dear, departed Dad used to say that so I had a laugh reading that.

Yes Karen, it is a pity it takes so long to cook otherwise all you consultants could do it at your demos - it would be a sure winner.
It needs to rest a while in the thermosaver to thicken up a little or left in the bowl for 5 minutes rather than serve it immediately. It becomes so much creamier if it sits a while.

the leftovers were great too, which really surprised me

naynay, i would be tempted to use leftover cooked brown rice for it (though then you lose some of the goodness maybe)

Nah, that doesn't work Karen.  I tried it once with some leftover basmati rice but it was just like rice in milk.  You need to cook the rice in the milk to get that creamy texture and it needs to be the round rice Nay nay.

i used basmati the first time and it was nicer than the arborio i thought
