I'm hoping I'm not too late to get onto a stall at the Market Evening our school is holding as a fundraiser the week after i start with tmx.
any ideas on what to make given it'll be a freezing cold canberra winter night? i thought of sorbet as being easy and nearly impossible to give anyone food poisoning but i don't know if people would be keen on it, especially if the venue is cold already lol

How about making pumpkin soup in the TMX - blitz the onion and saute and then add pumpkin chunks and blitz them before cooking to really speed up the process. Add stock goo or concentrate and boiling water from a kettle. Should have it made in 5-8 minutes. Blitz and then pour into a crockpot to keep it warm and serve with a dollop of cream into cups. If it's cold (Canberra) then that would be easy and cheap.
You could serve some bread too.
-
yes, i might try that at home and see how it goes. cheap too ;)

Karen, when we were in Margaret River a demonstrator there had made some dips, basil, sundried tomato etc and served them with crackers. I think soup would be rather good for Canberra weather though.
-
that's a good idea cookie, would save me having nothing while the soup cooks lol
I've definitely got a spot, i talked to the organiser this afternoon! I have to donate 10% of sales so I don't know whether to hope i sell heaps or not LOL (it's for the preschool so a good cause ;))
-
All the best for this endeavour Karen! Let us know how you go please! :)
-
We've also done hot chocolate - goes down a treat.
You could also make some sort of cake/pudding before hand and make custard while you are there.
I have found doing these events that you need to keep changing what you are doing - hope you have someone to help you & make sure you are near a water source.
Just be careful that you might have to fill out logs & comply with all sorts of health dept regulations if you are going to cook & serve food there...........be warned!!
Best of luck but & tell us how it goes. :) :)
-
I don't get it - what's a few Staph betweeen friends ?
-
It may just be Victorian (state, not era) regulations...........
After all look how well we did with Swine flu....................
-
hmmm she didn't mention anything, but I guess i'll find out!

I did a local school one last year & once the council got wind that we would be serving food cooked there & pre-prepared we had to come up with a "plan". The event planner wasn't aware until the last minute, it just meant being able to vouch that things were held at the right temperature etc. You do the plan on line - not hard, just annoying if you don't know about it until the last minute. I had to aquire a proper thermometer - you've probably already got one with all your Brazen adventures!!
-
no i don't at all!!! i've been wanting one for my oven (stupid thing is way too hot) but haven't got one yet. they are going to be serving nibbles, does that count for this sort of thing too?
-
In WA when we sell things at markets we have to have all the ingredients listed on the container. Not sure if you're actually cooking there though.
-
yes, i was plannign to have a sign with all the ingredients etc :)
-
I know how cold Canberra can get but I was just thinking that a sorbet while cold, is probably safe in lots of respects. It's not heated or cooked and if you use a no egg white one then there are minimal bugs that can harm it. It can be nut, dairy, gluten free etc so misses all those issues as well.
Mind you, not having my TMX yet my knowledge is limited so there may be other things that meet this as well.
Just my thoughts.

it's loud too which could help draw attention to moi LOL 8)

When is your market stall Karen? Obviously it will be inside. Guess DH will be helping you as he obviously knows the machine backwards. Be very interested to hear how the evening goes. If you can get over some of the obstacles of food laws etc as mentioned in other postings, I'm sure your stall will attract many people - the star attraction is something that a lot of people would never have seen before so that alone will draw some attention. It will be good practice for your days ahead as a consultant. Hey, you could put a sign on your stall - demos can be arranged ;) ;)
-
dh won't be there as he will be at home with
bratlings children, i will be on my lonesome. yes inside, but with a sliding door and spread out across 2 rooms so could be chilly lol
i will definitely have something about demo's there! now i'm wishing i hadn't given my girlfriend all my old tupperware table display stuff! lol
oh and it's in 2.5 weeks, so a few weeks after i've started.
I have my first 2 demos booked plus this, and got 2 more friends (who already own one) keen to have a demo to show friends too, so hopefully dates from them soon too :) it's all very exciting!
-
Sounds like a good start. Rooting for you, you've got to show DH that this is a real job ;D ;D
-
alas i would have to sell 2-3 per week to prove that LOL

How about custard Karen?
You could mill the sugar to demonstrate how well it mills, reduction of ingredients in the cupboard, reducing chemicals.
Then show them home made custard in 6 minutes (I only cook it for 6 mins now and it's really nice), no stirring, no lumps and so easy. I'd suggest adding some extra milk (say 100-150mls) to make it a bit runnier and easier to pour.
You could also vary the ingredients as you go say, grate chocolate, or chocolate and orange rind, grind some vanilla beans (although this would be more expensive), brandy custard??, do a coconut mik and lime rind as a dairy free option....
Or... you could pre-prepare some pastry cases and make lemon tarts using the lemon custard as the filling.
Just a few ideas. You would probably need someone helping you clean out the bowls though (do you have a second bowl to use or can you borrow one from someone??) - while you're busy booking demos ;) ;)
-
I agree! Chocolate custard!
You could make the chocolate red wine cake beforehand (Karen it is lush!) and then cut it in to chunks and then pour over some choc custard for them to taste. And then maybe some hot mulled wine or something, will check out my books for you!

LOL Bron, no wine allowed on school property! ;)
