Hope you two have a wonderful trip. We'll all be thinking enviously of you and looking forward to hearing how everything is going if you get a chance to pop on here now and then to keep us up to date with where you are and what mischief you are getting up to.
Have a great time, be safe and enjoy your travels.
-
Thanks Marina. Will do.
We are flying into Istanbul, a day prior to joining a Captains Choice tour, 'Wonders of the Ancient World and the Black Sea'. After this we are having a week with a private guide to see some extra places not covered by the tour. We then fly to Spain for 2 weeks. Again we are using a private guide. Hope to try some interesting food. We haven't visited either of these countries before so really looking forward to it. We will do our best to keep Forum members posted.
-
The trip sounds like it will be amazing. I travelled through Spain many years ago and loved every place we visited and still remember a few of the outstanding meals we had. Enjoy and safe travels.
-
Chookie & Ral, have a great trip, stay well and hold hands so you don't get lost! It all sounds wonderful and I know you will love it. Xxxxxx

Thanks for all the good wishes. We are sitting in the Emirates lounge watching the planes take off. I had a crab and horseradish fish cake with noodles for dinner, Ral had a small lamb cottage pie. This might be the last communication for a while as we have to buy a SIM card for the I Pad. Heaven only knows if I will get it to work. Help , I think I need CP and,Judy and Gert to give me a hand. Here comes Ral with some nibbles.

This is interesting. This is the plane we are flying on. I took it out of the window of the lounge, you can see the reflection of the lounge and Ral on the right hand side.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday Chookie and Ral. Have a wonderful time.
-
Morning all. It is 4.30 am and Ral has just left for a Balloon ride over Cappadocia. This is the most amazing place. I will try and post photo.
We flew in from Istanbul yesterday. We are a party of about 100. We are staying at the Cappadocia Cave Resort. all the Hotel rooms are built into the side of the hills. Our first room was a cave room, I requested a change as there were no windows at all and out our front door was a great big rock. ,,, we are now in a room, also carved into the rock, beautifully appointed, and with a window.
The early Christians fled and lived in these caves that they carved out of the rock.
Dinner last night was beautifully presented and delicious. The food on the whole has been very good. Being Summer, lots of salads and fresh fruit to go with the char grilled meat.
At breakfast yesterday, at the Grand Hyatt, I managed to blow out the lights in the dinning room, trying to make toast that was not just pale heated bread.
We are in the middle of the age and fitness levels of the group. We travel in 3 busses.
We are here for 3 days.
General impression of Turkey, people lovely, food outstanding, traffic in Istanbul, horrific, weather hot, about 30 and humid.
Taking most photos with iPhone, not sure how to post photos. More soon.
Best wishes to all who are travelling , and miss my morning ' Thermo Forum hit'.
-
Hi Chookie, so Ral is off on that balloon flight. Let us know when he gets back, you know I worry about things like that ;D
It all sounds good, nice and cool in your rock room but managing to change to a room with a window is a nice addition. Had a laugh at you blowing a fuse in the dining room, hope you acted as if it wasn't you but it does sound as if they knew it was :D
As I thought when my lips started to go numb in Chookieland, I now have a blister appearing on my top lip which will turn into a cold sore with compliments of that freezing cold wind in Daylesford. Thankfully it waited until the forumfest was over to rear it's ugly head.
Have fun, love to you both xx Judy
-
Chookie looks and sounds like you are really holiday in style. The hotel sounds interesting and great that you were able to change rooms. Hope Ral enjoyed his balloon flight. It's great that we are able to travel along with you.
-
Incredible Place you are in. Sounds all very interesting. You can use the Tapatalk app on your phone. If IPhone no problem if Android there is a new app for Tapatalk. Only .99 for you chookie.
Gert
-
This is a pic of the Cave Suits chookie is talking about in case she can't post one. Hope you don't mind chookie.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/21/e9epa4uq.jpg)
Gert
-
Glad alls going well Bess and the Ral was able to do his balloon flight as he had told me that he was really looking forward to it. Friends of ours were there last year and couldn't do one because of the weather. Keep having a great time!!
-
The cave hotel sounds absolutely amazing. I can imagine you would want to crawl under a rock after blowing out the dining room lights ;D hi Ral, you still look exactly the same - and iPad in hand
-
I hope the balloon flight went well. I'm not sure how I would go staying in a room without a window.
Thanks for the update, I love reading about everyone's trips.
-
Chookie it sounds like the holiday is going well and you are enjoying yourselves. Looking forward to your photos.
-
Thanks Judy, Gert and Wonder. Took some IPad photos today so I could post. Gert will try Tapatalk and see what I can do. Judy, look after your self.
Visited Fairy Chimineys . unreal. The ones visited today were used as churches and contain 10 th century frescos. Crowds awful. Then visited a family who have lived in a cave house for 20 years. Dishwasher and the works. All floors covered in beautiful Turkish carpets. Right on dirt floors.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/21/u2a5uses.jpg)
Gerts photo shows what the today people are doing with the ancient cave dwellings. Very upmarket and trendy. The photo I have posted is of a ' Fairy chiminey'.
Ral loved the Balloon flight. There were 62 balloons up this morning. Amazing.
-
Chookie, thanks so much for sharing your travels. 60 balloons would have looked amazing. We are thinking of visiting Turkey next year, eagerly following your posts.
-
Turkey sounds so interesting, Chookie. Have added it to my wishful thinking holiday destinations ;D
-
Thanks for the photos Chookie.Glad to hear Ral loved the balloon ride.I would have stayed on the ground like you :D
-
Sounds amazing Chookie, thanks for the updates and photos.
-
Hi Bess,
Loved the Fairy chimney. I'm so glad Ral had a great flight. Sounds like you both are having such a great time. wish I was there!!
-
Today went to a Turkish factory and a ceramic workshop. Fascinating. Tonight we see some Whirling Dervishes. Tomorrow up at 5.00am and travel all day. Then to Ephesus and then to boat. Will post when I can. CC, where are you now.?
-
She's in Sydney and leaves for the UK on Saturday Chookie.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/23/masady9y.jpg)
Whirling Dervishes.
-
Bess, those upmarket cave dwellings sound interesting. The fairy chimney's look great - I've got pictures of fairy's being held in them fluttering up and down ;D Where they used as dwellings?
The dancers look like they would have been lots of fun. Turkey is definitely on my wish list.
-
Wonder, it certainly south considering.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/23/egamy2ez.jpg)
Unfortunately, I can't capture the full effect. It is magical. They fill the balloons with hot air and the gently and silently rise from the ground.
Today we visit a caravanserai,
-
Chookie, that must have been amazing in real life. We are looking at a holidy in Europe this time next year and Turkey is definitely on my list but it may be one of those places we visit once the kids aren't with us.
-
Wow! Love the balloons picture. Was wondering about the whirling dervishes...could it be a place ;D Hehehe
-
Thanks for the photos chookie. The balloons look spectacular.
-
I wonder which one Ral was in. It must have been amazing to have been up there, bravo Ral - I would never have the nerve to do that.
-
Loving the photos Chookie, don't think I could have gone up in the balloons though :D
Marie
-
An amazing photo Chookie of the balloons. What did Ral say about the experience, would he do it again?
-
Ral loved the flight. The worst part was getting in and out. When they land, they try and land on the balloon trailer.
Off to a spa town tonight.
-
Love the balloons
-
Wow what an amazing photo of the balloons.
-
The balloons are amazing chookie. Well done to Ral for hopping in one.
-
I would have to be dragged screaming LOL.
-
Love the photo chookie, looks pretty magical to me!
-
Those balloons look great - we once did a balloon ride and it was a most peaceful flight - except for the roar of thefurnace when they were 'burning' to heat the gas so that the balloon would go higher. The landscape looks fabulous.
-
Chookie thank you for the photos. The dancers look lovely and the balloon ride looks Scarey. Brave Ral.
-
I have just caught up on this thread chookie and so enjoyed reading about your travels so far.
Fabulous photos and a fascinating country.
Please continue to post when you can and have a fabulous time.
Ral is very brave going up in the balloon.
What an experience ;D
-
I am typing this as we drive through the country side. There are olive trees and fig trees everywhere. We stopped ar a petrol station which had a large shop attached. They specialise in thick goat youhurt served on a plate with local honey tipped on top and then with poppy seeds sprinkled over.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/24/y5ameteq.jpg)
Olives and figs mixed together.
-
Beautiful.
Gert
-
We are heading for Izmir, on the coast. Ephesus tomorrow. Will be hot. About 34. Then the boat for 12 days.
We have 3 busses , 90 people. We are in bus 3 and there are only 1/2 the seat taken so we can spread out. We have both escorts and guides. All great. A doctor is travelling with us and she is great also. She is from Cloncurry.
The meals are meat dominate. Interesting. Have bought a Turkish cooking book.
So far there I have identified 2 TMX owners and 4 whose children have TMX. We are going to have a get together as they want the Forum info. Ral is a real devil. He keeps asking people if they have a TMX.
-

Good on Ral! Making life interesting!
Gert

Go Ral, promote the Thermomix wherever you go. It looks like we'll have some new members soon Chookie.
-
Looks fabulous. Wish I'd been with Ral in that balloon ;)
-
Methinks Ral enjoys the Thermomartyr title ha ha!
-
Recipe from Izmir. Had lunch at a very nice restaurant today. Fish and salad. Dessert was simple and special.
Mix tahini with pistachios and spread on a grill proof dish that can be taken to the table.
Heat grill and place dish under grill until it is brown. Looks like brûlée. Was yummy and so different. No gluten and complete as is.
-
Really enjoying your travels Chookie, wonderful photos. Thankyou
Marie
-
I wondered how long it would be before a recipe came our way Chookie. How thickly was it spread in the dish?
-
Sounds like an interesting dessert and very different :)
-
Thanks for the photo's and all the info Bess. It's great to be able to "travel" with you and Ral. Sounds like you are both having a great trip. I have always wanted to visit Ephesus, especially the library!!! Safe travels!!!
-
Contact will be difficult now as we are on the island sky. Only 100 passengers. The boat is beautiful. We have a lovely cabin and the facilities are great. We are heading to Troy today . Boat is so far very steady. Food, European with small serves. Perfect. Had brûlée made from Coconut milk. Lovely.
-
Have a great voyage Chookie. Now this is the part of your holiday that I would love to be there with you.
-
That sounds perfect Chookie ;D Enjoy

-
Today earned my OBE. On Board Entertainment. Talked about TMX to a group of about 30. Showed photos from blog. Many have TMX or their children have them. Have given forum address. Lot of interest. More later. Difficult to get on.
-
Chookie you must have been in your element, pity you couldn't have given a demo as well LOL.
-
Well done . OBE is right One Brilliant Elizabeth.
-
That is great Chookie, well done :)
Marie
-
Well done Chookie. The boat sounds wonderful and intimate. Enjoy .
I agree with Gert,One Brilliant Elizabeth

Sounds like you are having a wonderful time Bess, great that a lot of you have at least one thing in common. The lounge looks lovely. Enjoy the trip and thanks for taking the time to post so we can travel along with you.
-
Well done Chookie. It sounds very exciting.
-
Last day in Turkey tomorrow. Still on Island Sky. Loving it. Today we docked at Samsun, then drove 2 hours to Amaryas to look at another Mosque, lunch and a very interesting Museum.
I haven't had time but must tell about the trip up the Bosporus. At 11 a pilot boat met the boat to escort us from the Aegean Sea, through the Sea of Marmara and the Bosporus, to the Black Sea. It was midnight by the time we approached Istanbul. All the city lights, the blue Mosque, Sophia as well as all the bridges were lit. It was just like fairy land. No photo, sorry.
It is very hot, 38 today and very nice to be back on board.
Ral and I had a good laugh at your OBE comments. Thanks.
Last night we were served a Filipino Dinner. There were some nice sauces and the Chef said he would share them.
Will try and send a photo of the menus for tonight.
-
Following you trip chookie x

-
The menu looks great Chookie. What did you choose ;) ;D
-
I'm enjoying following your trip mr & mrs chookie. Sounds amazing.
-
I love how they always have something plain available for those who eat plain food. I know my parents would have chosen from that section ;D A trip wouldn't be a trip without a chef giving you a recipe Chookie and your approach to Istanbul all lit up sounded wonderful.
-
Sounds wonderful. I hope you chose the choc macadamia tart.
-
Chookie the lights of the city at night must have been like magic.
-
Morning all. Have had 1/2 the ship helping me get on to the Forum. !!!. Yesterday visited Russia. Sochi. We are sailing off the coast of the Ukraine, Yalta. Now. i have got up early to try and get on to wifi. Last night we had a Russian menu. Always good. Yesterday for lunch we ate out on the deck, 2 whole roast piglets. We can sit with most people as they are good company. They are from very mixed backgrounds and always interesting to talk to. Better go, glad I could get on.
-
It sounds great Chookie. DH's family are from the Ukraine.
-
Lovely to hear from you Chookie. :-* :-* This forum must becoming famous if they helping you log on :D :D :D

Have been without wifi for a few days but back on now. We have just arrived back to Istanbul. Beautiful view from room. Will post later. Very good transfer from boat. Last night we had a farewell dinner. All dressed up, but the highlight of the day was the BBQ lunch, out on deck. Will try and attach photo.

What did you go for, Chookie?
-
You are having a wonderful trip chookie and I am enjoying it when I get the opportunity to get onto the forum.
Thanks for sharing ;D
-
That food art looks stunning (from the looks of the chef's belly, it looks like he enjoys taste testing everything too!). Haven't commented too much on this thread because I am totally jealous, but avidly look forward to hearing from you - loving all your updates and photos.
-
Wow, what an amazing food display
-
A totally memorable and amazing trip for you both, Chookie . .what a fabulous experience! Thank you for sharing it with us!! :D

Great following your travels with you Chookie, love your photo's.

Such preparation in the appearance of the food. Amazing.
-
Gosh! Thank you for sharing the photos Chookie! That food looks amazing...I don't think I'd ever leave the restaurant if that was nearby, I'd need to sample it all!!!
-
Wow looks amazing Chookie. :D
Glorious food and a wonderful trip.

We are back in Istanbul and all is not good. Ral is in hospital with Gastro. He is in a German Hospital, private, l about as good as it gets here. Has been there for 2 days and they are feeding him anti biotics through a drip. He is a little better , but certainly not well enough to travel back home. Language is a big problem. The people are nice and it is a large and beautiful city. The hospital is 15 minutes walk from the hotel. The Australian Consul has been very good at contacting hospital, hotel and with advice. More later.
-
So sorry to hear your news. Tell Ral that there will be many good wishes and prayers for his recovery coming his way.
I hope the antibiotics kick in soon. Xox
-
Oh Chookie that is truly awful. It is bad enough when you are ill but being in a non English speaking place away from home is ghastly. Do take care of yourself and my love and thoughts are with you both.
-
Been so worried about you and Ral Chookie. Hopefully Ral will be well enough to be able to fly home ASAP. Take care and know that the love and concern from all your forum friends will get you through this problem. Xxxx
-
This is terrible news Chookie.Wishing Ral a speedy recovery so you can get back home to recover.Hugs to you both :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Chookie all will be fine. You are in good hands. Your insurance company will handle all the minutia and you just look after dear Ral. Tell him from me "too much of a good thing" and a few kilos less will be good while he fights this bacteria. Inevitable sometimes . Gastro happens. So long as you are fine and able to keep your wits about you then it is good. No hurry to rush home before Ral is ready as he is better off staying until the Gastro has run it's course. . One day at a time. It is better he is fully recovered before attempting to travel. Medicine is a universal language and the nurses caring for him can empathise with your needs. There will be someone there speaking English and your insurance company will provide an interpreter if needs be. Keep all paperwork. Ask for copies if needs be an don't fret. He will be fine.
Gert
-
Dear Chookie, it is so terrible to read your post. I am sure Ral will be fine, but it is still a stressful and worrying time for you. Take care of yourself, take care of Ral and don't start travelling again until he is strong enough to get home safely. If it means an extra couple of days resting and recovering, then take it before heading back. Love and hugs to you both.
-
Oh dearchookie... Gastro is often rife at this time of year in europe... Horrible bug and hard to avoid... Im sure he will be fine but it is frightening being in hospital in a foreign country... Insurance will more than take care of everything and you will fine xx. Hang in there..hard when its difficult to understand.. Even when i was very ill when i first went to france back in 2000 and was in hospital And had now dh as a translater I was still very worried as I didnt understand much... Cant imagine your frustration !!
My parents went to turkey as part of their overseas trip last year and some of your photos bought back memories of theirs and the lovelytrip they had...
-
Dear Chookie & Ral, what a terrible ordeal for you both.
Stay strong Chookie, all of your family and forum friends are sending their love and support. Hopefully Ral will be better soon and you'll be able to return home, love and best wishes to you both, take care xx
-
Chookie - really sorry this had to happen - I really feel for you both! . .but on the positive side at least you have the assistance of the Aust. Consul, etc. Gert's advice spot on!! Gastro is an absolute *%&^$% at any time, but away from home, doubly so. (memories of years ago while travelling in Mexico . . even now I can still hear Montezuma chortling on about how sweet is revenge! :-)) >:( )
. . and to Ral . . do wish you a very, very speedy recovery - and a smooth trip home!! :)

Hope Ral has a speedy recovery, sending best wishes..
-
Dear Bess, I really feel for you both, what a terriable end to a wonderful holiday. Tell Ral or thoughts and prayers are with him for a quick recovery and for you poor thing as being in a foreign country and having to deal with everything is a nightmare. You will both laugh at all this once you get home - believe me!!! Like Gert said keep all the paperwork and once home I know your dear son or daughter will help you with forms ect. My thoughts are with you both!! Lots of love
-
Chookie, I'm so sorry to hear about this I really hope it hasn't shortened your holiday by too much and you got to experience most of the things you had planned. While it's extremely stressful going through somehting like this the Australian embassy and insurance staff are normally a great help and don't be afraid to keep asking for their assistance. I hope Ral is feeling much better after the antibiotics and some of the stress will be alleviated. Stay well and all the best for the next few days.
-
Oh Chookie :( XXXOOO for you both
-
Chookie, I am sorry to hear your sad news and I hope your DH recovers quickly. In the mean time please take care of yourself and stay strong.
-
Just caught up on this thread.
Dear Chookie I hope Ral is doing well and feeling much better.
Sending you big hugs and positive thoughts.

Sending hugs and lots of positive thoughts to you and Ral. Hope he is now on the improve.

Poor Ral, hope he is now on the mend. You will both be looking forward to coming home after your ordeal. Take care chookie xx
-
Oh dear chookie, what a bummer. Not good news at all. Wishing Ral a speedy recovery and you both a safe trip home. Hang in there xox
-
So sorry to read Ral is not well, wishing him a speedy recovery and sending my love and positive thoughts Chookie to you both x
-
Chookie hope Ral recovers quickly :-*

Wishing Ral a speedy recovery, Chookie
-
OMG, what a family Forum Thermomix is. Thank you for all the good wishes. Ral is a bit better and is able to sit up for a while now. We are booked onto a flight7.30 PM on Friday, with a 10 hour ,layover in a hotel room at Dubai air port. Then home to Melb at 5.30 Sunday morning. The hotel and hospital have been very supportive. The Australian Consul has been great and they are tracking us home.
All has been compounded by problems with communication. Son, Paul spent time and sorted out phone so have been texting. Can't use or send mail, but can get onto Forum.
Zurich insurance are being difficult, Paul is dealing with them. They want to know why it is necessary to cancel our 2 weeks in Spain. They have to be joking. !!
Small piece of cooking info. My recipe for Middle Easter pizza is very close to the real thing. Local shop sell Turkish pizza, which they cook while you wait. They have Take away, in an oblong box to fit the shape. Cheese, tomato and minced meat.
More later, and thanks again for the good wishes, greatly appreciated by both of us.
-
We are thinking of you both .
Gert
-
Safe travels Chookie and Ral. :-* :-*
-
Safe travels xox
-
Glad to hear Ral is a little better and plans are in place to get you back to the comforts of home.
-
Be safe Chookie and Ral.
-
Good news that Ral is a bit better Chookie.
Keep safe and you will soon be home :)
-
That's good news about your arrangements for your trip home and glad Ral is starting to recover.
You will be so relieved to be back home amongst family, friends and familar surroundings after this. Insurance companies really are the pits, when you think of all you have gone through and all the stresses you have experienced in the last week or two, their attitude is disgraceful. Hope Paul sorts them out.
Take care on your trip home.
-
I missed this, and was very shocked to read it, but am pleased to know Ral is a bit better and your return home is planned.
Sending huge hugs and healing vibes to Ral and such good wishes for a safe journey home.
Take care, thinking of you D J xxxxx
-
Chookie, glad Ral is better, and soon you will be home.
Insurance companies are known to be bad, Hope its sorted out fast for you..
-
Bess I am so glad that Ral is now well enough to travel and yes you will be glad of the hotel room for those 10 hours to rest up, have a shower before the next leg of the journey. I am sure that the insurance company will come to the party as in the first instance I am sure they have morons handing things trying to get you to forget your claim but Paul will sort it out. Both you and your family will be so glad to have you safe and sound. Lots of love
-
Actually a few years ago we were in Southern Thailand when Ted had a fall breaking his arm, nose , Zygoma and his glasses. The QBE insurance company were amazing, and on the phone every day sometimes twice a day with advise and counsel plus a nurse rang regularly. I was even offered an interpreter. The insurance paid for absolutely everything including taxi fares to and from the hospital, fax and email costs, drugs, treatment, hospital and doctors. We have used QBE since as it is one of the few that will insure an 84 year old traveller!
I am confident Chookie and Ral's insurance will pay up.
Gert
-
I am confident Chookie and Ral's insurance will pay up.
I am sure you are right, Gert - like many, I just tend to be a bit cynical about insurance companies. Following your positive comments re QBE insurance, I will definitely look at them next time we are travelling.
-
Chookie, I am so glad your DH is feeling a little better and able to travel. Have a safe trip home.
-
Dear Bess and Ral,
I have just caught up on this thread and your sad news. I am so sorry that your holiday has ended up like this, but also really glad to hear that Ral is starting to feel a bit better.
Many years ago (when I was young and stupid) I travelled 6 weeks in Vietnam with NO travel insurance. DH got really, really sick (I thought he had meningitis) and trying to deal with foreign hospitals and language problems was a nightmare. I can absolutely relate to how stressful it must have been for you both.
Wishing you all the best for a safe and comfortable trip home, and for a further speedy recovery for Ral.
xxx karen
-
Thank you all again for all the good wishes. Zurich rang today to say that there would be no prob with the claims, although this has been the least of our worries. Paul is flying to Dubai and staying the night at the transit hotel, and then traveling from Dubai to Melb with us on the long leg. He is a quiet confident young man and we are really glad that he is meeting us.
On a brighter note. Today I had a beautiful light Turkish lunch. ( all by myself). The main dining room at the hotel has both Turkish and Western food. Neither good. But today I discovered a beautiful dining area on the roof of the hotel. The food was outstanding. The view over the Bosphorus was as good as the food. I had 2 small dishes, both of which will translate well to the TMX. Surprise coming.
Next message I hope from Dubai
-
What good news that you will have Paul with you when you travel home Chookie.
It's nice to read that you had a good dining experience on the roof of the hotel.I look forward to the recipes ;D
-
So glad the plan is coming together and Paul is coming to help.
You must be feeling more yourself if thinking of creating new dishes from what you have eaten!
Sending huge hugs and best wishes from us all
Xxx
-

It's nice when your kids can be there when you need them Chookie - you will both be so pleased to see him I'm sure. Not long to go now, in the meantime it was great to hear you finally found some nice food in that hotel - better late than never. I hope by now Ral is eating something too and that he is feeling OK to travel.
-
Chookie aren't our kids wonderful? I am so pleased Paul is flying over. I'm sure you will burst into tears when you see him. Simply sharing the load will be a great relief to you both.
Much love to you and Ral and a big hug to Paul.

You're spot on there Troupie, this is a very friendly, caring forum and we all support each other through troubling times. Lovely to have you on board.

Oh I've only just read this thread Chookie. Sending positive vibes your (and of course DH's) way. You are so thoughtful, with what you are going through, you have even thought about how to share your adventure with us through sharing recipes - truly generous.

You are not going to believe this. I just received this morning an email from Chookie asking if I could post some of her pics and it was dated 21/08/13. Since I did not get it I guess chookie thought I had said no. BWAAAAAAAAA! I could have been posting all this time.
Anyway I have one pic from the Spice Market which is amazing so I will go to Tapatalk and post the one lonely pic .

What a great photo - couldn't you just get lost in a place like this - even if you don't know what half the things are!

I am so sorry that I may have missd out or many more pics for chookie. Hopefully when they are settled back in chookie will post lots of her pics.
And yes the spice market all around the world are amazing and smell wonderful.

What a shame Chookie had trouble getting emails out of Turkey, we could have been following her journey as it happened. Thanks Gretchen for this one picture, how colourful does that look. Pity we don't have smellaforum ;D
-
What a great photo, you can almost smell the spices.

We are back home now, and it is so good. We didn't miss Spring , as we thought we might. Ral is more comfortable at home . We will ring the Dr in the morning and then take it from there. Paul met us in Dubai, he arrived from Australia one hour before us. We were on the plane for 5 hours, Istanbul to Dubai. Not a good experience with an upset tum. The 10 hour gap between flights , in the transit hotel, means only 4 to 5 hours sleep. I had 10 hours sleep in 3 days, Ral about the same. The flight from Dubai to Melb is 12 hours. Paul flew with us back to Melb, and then by car to Cherokee.
Wendy, our DDIL had warmed the house up and bought supplies to get us going. I had a wonderful toasted ham sandwich.
Before we left Istanbul, I visited the Restaurant on the roof of the hotel. I had just 2 small plates. I have attached a photo of the Hummus. I wanted to see how it differed from what I make. It is basically a nest of the hummus with freshly cooked chick peas in the center and dressed with chilli flavored olive oil. No Cummin in the hummus.
More photos to come.

Welcome home Chookie :-* :-* :-* At least you will be in your own bed tonight and getting some well needed rest.
Delicious dish of Hummus.
-
Lovely to hear you are back and settled into your own home Chookie, there's nothing like it. To walk into a lovely warm home and be able to eat something simple was great and I hope you and Ral both have a very good sleep tonight in your own bed. Rest up now, do what you have to do as far as your health is concerned and slowly get back into the swing of things. Great support from DS & DIL.
-
So pleased to hear that you and Ral are safely home :)
I hope Ral will soon be back to normal.
The hummus looks fab and that's how we have had it served both in Egypt and Turkey.
-
Welcome home, Wishing Ral a speedy complete recovery. Sleep well both of you, always good to be in your own bed.
-
Welcome home, sleep well and recover. That's all You both need to do right now.
Take care and big hugs. Xxx
-
Welcome home Chookie and Ral. Glad you are back safely and hope Ral recovers quickly now that he is home.
-
So glad to hear that you are now all home safe and sound. As I was driving down to Melbourne late yesterday afternoon I watched an Emirates plane come in and was thinking of you - highly unlikely that that was YOUR plane, but my thoughts were with you nonetheless as I knew you had to be very close at that time. It must have been a difficult flight for Ral.
It will be a comfort to be back in your own home with family and friends around you giving you support. XX
-
Very glad to hear you're back home and settled, Chookie. I do hope Ral makes a complete recovery very soon. Thoughts have been with you right the way through!!! :)
-
Glad you are home Chookie. Lots of rest for you both and you will be ready to "go" again soon!
Gert
-
Welcome home, Chookie and Ral! :)
So heartwarming to hear how Paul went the extra mile to take care of both of you. Signs of a very well brought up son. Kudos to both mum and dad.
And such a thoughtful gesture from Wendy. Just lovely.
Rest up now, Chookie. Hope Ral bounces back very soon. :D
-
I'm pleased that you are finally home, safe and sound and with family.
Lots of rest for you both now and Ral will be back to 100% in no time. Nothing like being at home.
Take care, xx
-
Chookie and Ral so glad to hear that you are home safe and well. How lovely of DS and DIL to go to such lengths to help out, so thoughtful of them. Rest up and we will all be eager to see more photos and hear about the food once you are well rested.
-
Welcome home Chookie and DH. So glad you are back safely and hope DH recovers quickly now that he is home.
-
Welcome home Bess & Ral. There is nothing like being your own home, especially when you are feeling off colour. Rest up and get a good nights sleep in your own bed!! Much love to you both and a big thankyou to Paul and his wife for all they have done.
-
Welcome home chookie & Ral :-* I think I was up your way on Saturday when we drove to Daylesford for the day. was thinking what a beautiful part of the world you live in. I couldn't see Cherokee on the map though so perhaps was not as close as thought. It's tough being sleep deprived and will certainly take a while to catch up. I hope Ral can recover quickly from his bug.
-
Oh Chookie and Ral a great big welcome home. It must be such a feeling of relief for you both. Dear Ral, get well soon so you can have lots of Chookie's delicious food. How wonderful of Paul to accompany you and DIL. To make the home coming so warm and cosy.
Rest up dear friends. :-* :-* :-*

-
So sorry to hear Ral has had to go to hospital, at least you are home and have family near. I'm sure he'll be back on his feet soon - take care chookie.
-
Thanks Judy. I am not thinking straight. Ral and I are now both home. He is not a lot better. The last tests were for parasites and Cholera. Frightening. He has had massive doses of anti- biotics , in Turkey and on the boat. This may be some of the problem. He has lost 11 Ks. Nice , but not a good way to do it. It is lovely to be home. Thanks to everyone for the good wishes, greatly appreciated.
I needed a little TMX cooking therapy so made a pineapple fruit cake.
-
Chookie there's been a lot of worried people and you know you have our love, support and very best wishes for a full recovery for dear Ral. Hopefully now you are home, things will slowly improve and the test results will give the doctors the necessary answers so they can treat the problem. xxxx
-
Chookie, so very relieved to hear that Ral is out of hospital and you are now both home at last. Like everyone else, I have been really worried about both Ral and yourself over the past couple of weeks. I hope the tests show up what the problem is and his real recovery can start now.
I am sure your TMX has missed you too, but you can give it a good workout now preparing wholesome, nourishing food for your man. Will look forward to progress reports as and when you get a chance, but settle back in and relax at home first.
-
Dear Bess & Ral, I am so happy that Ral is out of hospital even though not out of the woods yet!!! Hopefully each day now that you are home he will get a little stronger and be back to his old self very soon. Lots of love
-
Sending big hugs to both of you. Hopefully you will have some answers soon.
-
Sending positive thoughts to both of you, Chookie xx

Chookie thinking of you and Ral :)
-
Glad you are home, and hope Ral improves soon and they can isolate what caused it.
Take it steady and know that we all send huge hugs and very best wishes to oth of you and wishing Ral a speedy recovery.
Frightening it must be, hopefully all will improve now.
Xxxxxxxxx from us all in UK.
-
Glad you are both home. Hopefully with a little home cooking Ral will get better soon. Sending hugs to you both.
-
Thanks again for all the good wishes. Today is the first day for about 4 weeks that Ral has asked for something to eat. Thank God for the TMX. He asked for a lemon slushy. I do hope he is on the mend as it has been truly awful.
-
It's nice to hear Ral actually asked to eat something today Chookie.Big hugs to you both :-* :-*
-
That's great Chookie, maybe next time it will be something more substantial but tiny steps are good.
-
Good to hear that, Chookie. That's a step in the right direction xx
-
Little steps, chookie, and good to hear.
Glad that perhaps the corner is turned for Ral.
-
That sounds like a great first step for him ... now that his interest in food is starting again I can see you scouring all your recipes for meals with lots of 'hidden' goodness in them to help build him back up again.
-
That's the best news Chookie. Fingers crossed things are starting to look up and Ral is now on the mend. Thinking of you both!!
-
A very positive step in the right direction Chookie.
Hopefully Rall has turned the corner and will be able to start eating some light food soon.
Thinking of you both :)
-
That's great news chookie, little steps in the right direction.

Ral much the same.. We are not going back to Royal Melm. Can't believe how bad the service was there. Have an appointment with specialist tomorrow and hope to get some answers. Keep you posted. Thanks for the good wishes.
-
Thinking of you both and hoping that today you start to get some answers. Lots of love Xxx
-
Thinking of you both and hopefully you will find out something today.x
-
The Melb Hospital was supposed to phone or send a letter for the out Patients. this didn't happen. Our Dr said he couldn't wait so arranged an appointment with a specialist for tomorrow. In the mean while the BBBBB car broke down on Saturday and had to be towed to Bendigo. Friend offerered to drive me up there today but mechanic rang to say couldn't get part delivered until tomorrow. Cancelled friend , then mechanic rang to say they took the part from another car in the show room. same friend coming now to drive me to Bendigo. Would you believe any of this ??
Bruce and Mandy are driving us to Melb tomorrow. Poor Ral is just drifting with whatever and I don't know where i am. Someone asked if this was the third thing that had happened. I said yes, the fox took the last 3 chooks.
I will let you know what happens tomorrow.
Thanks for all the good wishes.
-
Oh Chookie what an awful set of dramas you are having. Thank you for keeping us informed as you are both in my thoughts.
-
Well that soes it for you chookie. All good news from now on. Just take one thing a a time and deal with it. Don't get flummoxed.

I can't say any more than everyone has already said. You are both in our hearts and thoughts. As Gert said, just take one thing at a time.
-
I hope things start to improve Chookie and Ral and that you get some answers soon.
Stay strong and take care xx
-
Thanks again for the good wishes, I think they are working. Friend drove me up to Bendigo to collect car. Although out of warranty was fixed, no charge.
Marina, i will be very close to you tomorrow and totally frustrated that i wont be able to call in.

One problem solved. Good.

Thinking of you both. Glad car is sorted. Things are on the up now. All the best xox

Marina, i will be very close to you tomorrow and totally frustrated that i wont be able to call in.
B*#@er ... if possible, can I try to meet you somewhere - even if only for 5 minutes - just to give you a hug / buy you a coffee ...?
Hope all goes well today. XX
-
Good luck and hope you get the help Ral needs, and support.
Take care, xxxx
-
Sorry to hear things still aren't great for Ral. Good luck getting answers from the specialist and hope your three has come and gone and all will be good from here.
-
OMG Chookie - just catching up on everything . . talk about going through the mill!! Hoping very much that things settle down and begin to return to some semblance of normality for you and Ral!
I have no idea if this suggestion would be helpful for Ral or not . . Decades ago I was travelling in Mexico with a similar outcome as Ral . . I never thought it was possible to ever be so ill!! - As a precaution we'd asked our GP for a Rx for some antibiotics to take with us and although it was of some comfort to have them on hand it seemed not to help much at all when push came to shove . . (unintended painful pun! :-)))
It took nearly 6 months to return to normal and only it seems after consuming vast amounts of plain yogurt at the suggestion of a friend- a good yogurt with all the cultures in place . . .( in Australia I'd suggest something like Jalna pot set yogurt - full cream) - I had as much as I could manage, morning, noon and night. Now, it's hard to say which came first, the chicken or the egg, but I did get better - Just a thought which may or may not be useful . .
I'm really sorry to hear about the chooks. Also some time ago - we had chooks (hens and roosters) in North Parramatta. The property backed onto a reserve and was just across the road from Lake Parramatta). When the population expanded somewhat I took several up to a property in the Hunter Valley and spent days building coops so predator proof even the humans had difficulty getting in! ;D ;D Meanwhile, back at the ranch in Sydney where I had assumed all was safe, over time we eventually lost 5 ducks and several chooks. I couldn't figure out what was happening and for a short while thought the raiders had to be of the two legged variety! That is until one night in the wee hours of the morning, I heard a commotion and caught the most gorgeous looking red fox coming over a high paling fence. Chased it off throwing everything at it bar the kitchen sink but nothing deters them once they've sussed out where "The Restaurant of the Month" is located . . >:(
I do wish you the best. Chookie - always thinking of you and Ral and fingers crossed that the finish line of this humungous obstacle race is just a short distance in front of you! :-* :-* :-*
-
Goldfish, you did make me laugh. We will get more chooks. Daughter , Anna prepared a new home for some new girl, last week end. She is going to put a concrete floor in next Sat.
Ral is taking tablets that contain the same active ingredient as the yoghurt. Hasn't taken then for long enough time to show an improvement. But thanks forthought.
Thanks again for all the good wishes.
-
What a very handy DD you have Chookie, did Ral teach her everything she knows? Good luck today and say hi from me to those good friends of yours who are driving you to town. Big hugs to you both.
-
Sending enormous hugs to you both Chookie. XXXXX00000
-
Ral has been admitted to Epworth Hospital. He has a private room due to what he has wrong with him. They are going to carry out several tests. He has a very nice Dr who is concerned about the rapid loss of weight. I will be staying with son and family. Bruce and Mandy were most attentive in driving us down to Dr and then to Hospital. We feel very lucky to be in such a good place and hope they can get to the bottom of the problem. ( no pun intended). Anna coming down from Ballarat tonight to visit.
Thanks again for all the good wishes.
-
All will be sorted out now chookie. You can relax a bit. He is in good hands and you are in good hands.
Gert
-
All will be sorted out now chookie. You can relax a bit. He is in good hands and you are in good hands.
Gert
Amen to that!!
Chookie, It sounds as though Ral is in excellent hands ..and now you really need to look after you - good nights sleep, nutritious food... you know "the drill!" ;) sending you both the best.. and also to that very special caring family of yours (Wonder where they got all that from, eh!?! ;))
-
Bess, I think that's the best place for him at the moment but your poor dears have been through the bramble bush, haven't you. Let's hope that this new doctor get to the bottom of things and start him on the road to a full recovery. Our love and thoughts are with you both.
-
Chookie I do hope you both find all the answers now. Much love.

It sounds as though Ral is in good hands Chookie.Love to you both :-* :-*

Thoughts are with you both. Hopefully this will sort things out once and for all.
-
Hopefully everything will be sorted soon Chookie, Love to you both
Marie
-
You've got a great hospital there chookie. Hopefully Ral will get better soon. If you want a break, errands done or just someone to chat with over a cuppa, I'm just a quick drive up the highway. Don't forget to take care of yourself too xox
-
So glad to hear this news Chookie and hopefully they will now get things sorted out for dear Ral. It should be a load of your shoulders handing him over to the professionals, I know how hard it is looking after really sick people and wondering if you are doing the right thing. Be there for him but also look after yourself dear friend, love to you both.
-
Hope that you get your answers soon, Chookie. Take care of yourself too!
-
Thinking of you. I came in here to catch up on your holiday. So sorry it resulted in Ral being so sick. Hope recovery is swift now.
-
Chookie, so sorry to hear you still haven't got to the bottom of all this. The Epworth is a great hospital with great doctors I'm sure he is in the best place and they will be able to sort things out. take care of yourself although it sounds like the kids will make sure of that. Love to you both.
-
Glad to hear you are getting better help.
Hope things calm down for both of you then it is lots of r and r to get your strength back - emotionally and physically.
Much love DJ xxxx
-
The good thing about good hospitals is that they are very thorough in conducting a variety of tests to find solutions to the problem. So hopefully Ral will get better soon.
-
Thinking of you both and glad to hear that Ral is having tests to find the cause.
-
Chookie, so glad to hear that your DH is in a good hospital with good doctors. Hopefully they will get to the source of the problem quickly. In the mean time take care of your self.
-
Oh dear hadnt checked back to this thread as thought he just had a bad bout of gastro and have been busy.. My goodness you must have been beside yourselves... Good you are home and ral is in hospital... Thinking of you and hoping they pinpoint what is wrong soon x
I dont know if he is already taking any chookie but a good probiotic will help... I took them regularly during certain periods and they always worked x
I need to say something very important... When I first went to europe I fell ill after a month and a half.. Had a kind of gastro which I thought I got over but turned into other problems and I ended up with poly inflammatory reactive arthritis which feels like someone bashing your joints with a hammer.incredibly painful. I had test after test done with no results.. Devastating. Dont think it was good or bad doctors but just I was a tourist and I dont care what anyone says they dont treat you the same as a national as they just want to get you well enough to fly home... I flew home with medical assistance as could hardly walk and had lost alot of weight then from the airport went straight to hospital where I spent 5 days getting poked and prodded and asked the same amount of questions by different specialists over and over which is when they diagnosed me.. I was on meds for a year and a half following my hospital visit and they have no idea why anyone gets this auto immune disease.. For me it hasnt returned but for some it does.. Affects anyone from any race to age.. My point is... The aussie she'll be right attitude and not hitting things on the head before they become something bigger and insular environment when it comes to bugs creates situations like these imo... . Basically be prepared and understand that europe, the middle east etc is like them going to deep africa germ wise... It was my french specialist who used to repeat this to me... Over and over...if your never exposed to these germs or hardly any your immunity is lessened so when you are exposed your body basically freaks out... This has nothing to do with chookie and ral in particular so please dont take it this way but it bothers me here that people are so anal about clynical clean and antibacterial this or that which is creating an environment of weaker immunity and bugs having an easier job of knocking ppl over...been there, lived it, learnt my lesson and just hope others do... Getting off my soap box!
-
Thanks for sharing, Frozzie. Glad that it hasn't returned. Sounds horrible!
-
My DH had a similar illness to yours at home here in Australia Frozzie and it took him 8 months to get back to normal. He went to many specialists but never really got to the bottom of it. I have to say that anywhere that we have been in the world with our family and required any medical services we have always received good care if necessary without being "nationals".
I am sure that Ral will feel more at ease now that he is home and hopefully will get well soon. Sometimes these bugs take months to clear from the system unfortunately.
Thinking of you both with love :)
-
Well said Frozzie. I could not agree more. You hear more and more such stories and we take more and more unnecessary antibacterials without knowing that our bodies have certain bacteria which are beneficial and are not to be messed with. Broad spectrum antibiotics have their place but not always and we often do not take the time or money to get tests to determine what is going on when we get sick. Destroying the good bacteria in our bodies can do no end of harm. First we buy expensive Antibacteria cleaners to splash all over the place and then we buy expensive yogurts to replace bacteria we need and our bodies are going nuts trying to figure it all out.
And speaking of soap boxes, what ever happened to simple hands washing with normal soap and warm water. Oh wait you an't buy "normal" soap any more.
Glad you survived it Frozzie and I have very happy that Ral is in a good place. Nasty business
Gert
-
Hi mf.. My illness was a reaction to my body basically freaking out and turning on itself after an invasion of some weird bug overseas..not something i would have gotten here.. With regards to the hospital yes you are treated well but they will not do the same amount of testing etc to get to the bottom of it.. Have been both .. A tourist and a national and you definately are not treated the same.. Your not treated badly and they do their job but you do not get the same treatment.. Like i said well enough to get you home which is what most people want anyway. People either want to hear it or they dont but facts are facts. This is why I delete comments as people just totally miss the point and i seriously dont need the grief... Rals situation reminded me of my own and that triggered the frustration I have with peoples take on immunity hence the comments... Anyway moving on ...
With regards to ral and chookie I wish you all the best and the best outcome possible... I do hope they find out whats wrong soon x
-
I know gert ive seen it so much since I have been back and its gotten worse.. And doctors are still prescribing antibiotics like lollies.. Sern a number of other mothers prescribed antibiotics in the short tile we have been back... Anyway frustrates the huhummm out of me.. If it continues this country will be wiped out with one so called superbug.. Anyway glad I got ill and glad I lived in France which taught me to wake up to myself... Removing soap box lol
-
I have just got back from the market and, who should I run into but Bess and her lovely son, Paul, out doing some shopping.
Bess is looking well, relaxed, happy and relieved as you can imagine as the news of Ral is good, however, Bess will come on later and fill you all in on the details.
-
You made my day cuilidh. Happy dance.
Gert
-
That is good news Cuilidh :)
Marie
-
GOOD NEWS. Yesterday the Dr told ral that he didn't have Gastro but Colitis. He is hopeful that with medication for several months, maybe a year, he should be over this problem. Hopefully. He feels there are several factors involved. The original bug, ( which several people including me had ) , large amounts of antibiotics and maybe a tiny genetic factor.ral is feeling much better and is going to sit in a chair for a little while. We are hoping he will be home on Monday afternoon.
He will be watching the footy with Anna on the Telly.
It was wonderful meeting Marina in the market this morning. I have been feeling a little removed from reality.
Thank you again for all the good wishes, they have been greatly appreciated.
-
:) :) :)
-
Great news Chookie. Hopefully now they know what the problem is, they can start the treatment and the road to recovery can commence.
Hope Ral has a good day and enjoys the footy.
How lovely that you ran into Marina.
-
Knowing the problem is half the battle Chookie, hopefully onwards and upwards now albeit it slowly. I can imagine how wonderful it would have been to bump into Marina this morning. A hug and some comforting words is what we need sometimes. Take care dear friends.
-
Bess, it's so good that finally they have got to the heart of the problem. Let's hope it's upwards from here!!!!! You will both be so happy to be finally home next week as Ral can rest much better there than in hospital. Thinking of you both!!! xxx
-
Good news chookie... Hopefully all will be good now that you have a diagnosis .. Bet ral is looking forward to getting home... Xx
-
That is great news Chookie, hope Ral enjoyed the football and that he will continue to feel better. Thoughts are with you both.
Marie

Great news. Very pleased for you both. Enjoy the footy Ral and squeeze in a nana nap at half time ;)

I'm so pleased Ral has a diagnosis Chookie. He can now be treated and proceed on the road to recovery. Take care and I hope his footy team won. Xx
-
Great news ;D Good that you bumped into a friendly face today too.
Wishing you a speedy recovery Ral. :)
-
Thanks again to such a lovely bunch of people. I think Ral is recovering from the cursing that was flowing towards the umpire at the Grand Final today. Bumping into Marina at the Market was really something special, and all on Judy,s Birthday. !!!!

So glad you had better news and have faith in your new medic.
How lovely to meet up with marina. You needed something special to happen.
Get well wishes to Ral and big hugs to both.
-
Great to hear that you have now got a diagnosis Chookie and slowly but surely Ral will be on the mend.
Thinking of you both :)
-
So good to hear you finally have some answers chookie, and how nice that marina got to give you that hug! Hopefully things will start turning around for you and Ral now.
-
Looks like Ral may come out Wednesday at the earliest. Looking much better but still very weak. Has an infection in hand where the drip thing went in. He is eating small meals and DIL and I took him out for lunch today. Nothing like a little normality. He was like a kid at a birthday party. Things are looking up.
Thanks again for the good wishes.
-
Small steps Chookie. Xxx
-
Really good to hear, Chookie!! Cookie's right .. baby steps will go a long way!! One step and one day at a time... Thanks for taking the time to let us know what's happening. Best wishes and love to you both.
-
So glad to hear Bess that things are at last looking up for Ral. What a lovely idea to take him out for lunch, and I agree a little bit of normality will go along way to aiding his recovery.
-
Fantastic news Bess, you all must be so relieved and I'm sure it will help Ral in his recovery just knowing what is actually wrong with him. It would have been lovely for you to run into Marina and I'm sure she was excited to be getting the great news hot of the press. All the best for the next few days and safe trip home.
-
Take is slowly chookie no matter what Ral says! The bowel needs plenty of time to recover. Home and hearth that is the best news. No doing work.
Gert
-
Great news Chookie that Ral is a little better.Things are certainly looking up for you.Hugs to you both :-* :-*
-
Lovely news. With improved morale everything else follows.
Take it easy both of you.
-
It sounds like everything is slowly starting to come together at last and a touch of normality by way of lunch out of hospital is an incredibile morale booster. It will be so good once you are both back home again, I know you are looking forward to that!
-
Chookie, so glad DH is starting to feel better. Take things easy, thinking of you both
Marie
-
Nice to hear your good news, Chookie :)
-
So frustrated, Ral still in hospital, has an infection in both wrists. Other problems on the improve. Extra frustrated, got locked out of Forum and was told I was a visitor. ! Yes I feel like a visitor and just when I have picked up a fab sweets idea.
Visited a little coffee shop where the owner is a real' foodie'. I had a slice of his morning tea cake, which really was my lunch.
He uses his leftover muffins, especially the chocolate chip ones, crumbles them up, adds some walnuts, and makes the liquid mix for bread and butter Pud and mixes it all together. Baked in cake tin, dressed with chocolate syrup when out of oven. Served with vanilla ice cream. Yummy.
I haven't felt like cooking, so this may mean that things are on the improve.
I think that any cake could be used, but the chocolate certainly add character.
-
Yay, the forum is letting you post Chookie. Let's hope it stays that way. Recipe sounds nice, thanks for sharing it with us.
Poor Ral, can't take a trick can he - you must be getting really anxious to get home by now. Let's hope they can get on top of this new problem and let him out of there ASAP. :-* :-* :-*
-
I know it is frustrating for you both and hope the infections settle and you can get the hell outta that place before something else happens.
I love your foodie coffee shop guy for using the leftover but still good muffins to create something else yummy. Smart he is,
My mother always used stale cake this way but my father actually liked stale cake slathered with BUTTER with a slice of cheddar on top!
Keep an eye on those nurses doing the dressing chookie. Standards!!
Love from me,
Gert
-
Oh, No!! You must be 'over' hospitals by now >:( ... yesterday I was thinking, because we hadn't heard from you, that you were busy heading home and settling Ral down but, no, you're still here. Last night DH was saying we should go and visit Ral but I said, No, he's home now! Are you in the mood for a visitor or two, or would you prefer to be left in peace? I can understand the left in peace option, so don't be worried if that is what you would prefer.
-
So sorry to read this, and the forum gremlins too, but pleased to read you are thinking food, albeit in a very minor way. The cooking mojo will return and we shall all enjoy that with you.
Gert gives good advice. Hope Ral is better soon and not in pain and most importantly HOME SOON!
Much love DJ xxx
-
I hope you get home soon with Ral Chookie :-* :-*
-
Bess, you can't take a trick!!!! Fingers crossed they let him out soon and you both can get home and back to normal!!!
-
Oh Chookie you must feel like throwing a tantrum. Go ahead and do it. I do hope Ral is home soon. Then you will both be able to settle down and get on with things. Hugs to you both.
-
Hang in there, Chookie . . .here's hoping Ral will be out of there soon and you can both relax at home. Thinking of you both daily and hoping things are getting better - slowly but surely!!
-
Thanks again for all the heart felt messages. ;D
-

I think that any cake could be used, but the chocolate certainly add character.
When I worked at the Hyatt they used to do that with all the leftover croissants and muffins from breakfast and serve it in the staff cafe and it was YUM!
Sorry to hear about yet another setback chookie, hope Ral will be out of there for good soon.
-
Interesting, Deedub. Can't wait to try this myself.
Poor Ral has a Staf infection. But a treatable one. Looks like he will be in hospital for a couple more weeks.
Paul took me up to Cherokee today, he mowed the lawn and filled the wood boxes. I did a general tidy up, did washing and cooked us lunch.
Will be nice to eventually go home.
-
Chookie there is not a doubt my mind that this infection is iatrogenic . I sincerely hope it is not a methicillin resistant strain.. I am sure he is on a drip with antibiotics given in the bag. I hope so anyway. As soon as the drip is removed I would be taking him home and if you can't manage then getting some home nursing to assist. I really hate this and it makes me livid so don't get me started. Enough is enough for Ral and you both.
Once he is well enough then hightail it home where he is safe. Don't for goodness let any bugger near him without visible hand cleaning , especially the doctors. Buy a big bottle a alcohol based hand cleaner and wipe every bl**dy thing he touches and don't you get sick either.
I could just scream I am so angry. I want nasal swabs of everyone near him. Lemme at em!
Gert
-
Sorry to hear that Chookie, hoping DH will be home soon. My DH ended up with a staph infection also when he went into hospital a few years back now. They could not give antibiotics so we were on our own. Our doctor told us it was the staph and the hospital variety. It seems to be par for the course these days, go in without it and come home with it.
Love to you both Chookie :-* :-*
-
So sorry to hear this Chookie, you were so close to going home. Gert is on the money there and knows how these things happen so I can understand why she's livid. Glad you were able to have a day at home doing normal things. Love to you both.
-
Oh chookie, how awful. Gert's advice is spot on.
Keep smiling and wave the anti bac bottle at everyone who comes to see Ral.
Huge hugs and so glad you went home, just for a day.
Xxxxxx
-
Oh Chookie what an absolute bugger. I agree with Gert and sincerely hope it is not the bad staph infection.
Keep an eye on everyone treating him and that they wash their hands.
Most importantly take care of yourself. It was good that you could get back home for a short while.
-
What a set back for Ral Chookie.Big hugs for you both :-*
-
So sorry to hear about the set back for your DH. I hope he starts to improve soon. I can only agree with everyone else about making sure that anyone that goes near him has washed their hands with some sort of antibacterial hand wash. Make sure you look after yourself as well.
-
So sorry to hear of the set back for Ral, hope he improves soon and you can take him back home, take care of your self chookie.
-
Oh chookie what a bummer. Hoping he can get rid of it quick and go home soon. Hoping you are taking care of yourself too. Love to you both xox
-
I actually do not agree with antibacterials around the house. That is going to be our problem in The future. What we need is regular hand washing with soap and water and where that is not available then alcohol based hand cleaners. Bacterias are growing and mutating faster than we can keep up with them. I have worked in an environment riddled with MRSA and it is no joke. The hospital system is a mess with cutbacks everywhere including infectious control people . Too many shortcuts and risk taking. I would love to swab all the staff and all sinks and all the equipment including the stethoscopes hanging around the necks of those stupid students interns and nurses. God knows where they have been.
Gert
-
Too true Gert. DH taught a lass who lost her life because of a broken leg ( open wound) and she contracted MRSA in hospital. Mum had it too, from her crap nursing home. Made her treatment very difficult.
Royal Perth Hospital has that of course and they are really battling VRE at the moment.
-
I'm sorry to hear Chookie. I hope he recovers quickly.
They have actually changed the requirements in day care centres I believe to warm soapy water. Bleach is only used in the bathrooms. I agree with you Gert. Chemicals and antibacterials are far too overused in households these days.
-
Chookie, DH and I are thinking of you both - please feel free to let us know if we can do anything to help in any way.
I agree with you Gert. Chemicals and antibacterials are far too overused in households these days.
This is true, we are digging a huge hole for ourselves which is more far reaching than most people realise and it is going to be nigh on impossible to get out if something radical doesn't change soon. I'm going to keep my fingers away from the computer now as I could go on and on for ages about this subject
-
Marina we should all get our soapboxes out on this subject. I cannot believe already stretched household budgets are spent on unnecessary cleaning products. It is one aisle of the supermarket I never go down except for the no frills Domestos which is exactly the same as and about a quarter of the price and then it is only used in the toilet .
Gert
-
Supermarkets have a lot to offer. The pet food aisle has more choice than 3rd world countries.
-
Mcmich another aisle I never go down as I make my own. Come to think about it there are a few aisles I don't need to go down .
Heaven help us if we ever get to the American style supermarkets. Takes three days to seeit all and the toilet paper is half a day in itself.
Gert
-
I find it horrid that I live in such excess and that people are living in poverty which has led me to look into volunteer work on Mersey Ships - my nursing qualifications may have me accepted? I'm not currant with theatre/operation stuff.
-
I think you mean the Mercy Ships Charity. Right?
Gert
-
Oh Dear - yes Mercy Ships - Not ships on The Mersey. :)
-
Good on you Michele, it means travelling overseas obviously - tell us a bit more about it please.
-
Exciting mcmich.
Agree Gert. We have antibacterial for after any farm nasties, otherwise soap and water.
Use soap and water in the kitchen too.
Normal bleach for loos when needed, otherwise a milder cleaner for the septic tank.
-
I thought you were off on a ship Mich.
I agree with all the above ladies. Another thing that bugs me is all these 'drugs/ medicines 'or whatever they advertise. Don't feel bloated. Take this, try this for your arthritis, keep you liver healthy take this and so on. Some people are very gullible and would be taking so much unnecessary junk.
-
Wanna talk about unnecessary vitamins. Cholesterol reducing margarine?
Gert
-
You hit the nail on the head Gert. To make matters worse, the children see these vitamins on TV ads and think they can pop a pill instead of eating their meat and three veg, fresh fruit and water. Well not in my house.
-
Agreed! In fact we hardly go down any aisles in a stupid market these days.
-
Sorry to hear that ral has another infection chookie... Hope things improve fast..xx
Not getting on my soapbox again but said it all before and 100percent agree with gert.. Livid x 2 with regards to all that
-
Go Kimmyh, don't let the kids be influenced by that stuff.
-
Same in this house, no anitbacterial, no vitamins just eat better and more water. I can't believe how many parents are at the doctors all the time looking for anitbiotics for a cold or a snuffle. Fortunately our kids have been pretty healthy apart from a few issues but DS at 13 has only had antibiotics 2 or 3 times and the same with DD, they have to be really sick, a complaint that has gone on for a few weeks or a suspected broken bone before I'll take them to the doctors.
-
I'm the same wonder. Unfortunately DD 2 has had ab 6 or 7 times. Recurrent tonsillitis :(
-
We went through tonnes of antibiotics when DD was young. She was missing so much school with tonsillitis. Then they were removed, what a different person. Gosh I just realised that was 20 years ago.
I am amazed at the number of adults I know who have to have all their vitamins every morning. I'm sure they don't realise that lots of them are excreted as the body has enough. What a waste of money.
-
I take vitamin B regularly as it is good for the well being of mind and memory. I drink alcohol and that depletes the absorption of vitamin B. There is no way that I eat enough foods rich in vitamin B to get by on.
-
Time flys cookie. Give the citing aisle a miss and head for the fresh fruit and veggie I say.
Gert

We have stolen Chookie's thread. Lol!
MCmichhow about chicken liver pâté with grand Marnier. You get the liver and oranges. Vitamin B sorted
-
Might be able to force myself to have the grand manier - can't come at livers - Gees Gert - you know what livers do - they are filters for the ugly.
-
LOL! ;D
-
I can't stand liver either Mich.
-
What's the news of Ral these days Bess - how is he getting on and how are you surviving?
-
Good news today. They are finally getting on top of Rals Staph infection. Looking at letting him out next Wednesday. Poor Paul and Wendy have me for another week. Littlies think it is great fun. Building going on here, so Oscar said I could share his bed. Then looked at me and asked if I wet the bed. Hope we make it home next week. I will need everyone to cross fingers for us.
-
Thank goodness Chookie, its been too long. All my fingers crossed. Sending my love too.
-
What wonderful news Chookie. I'm so glad there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel.
That was a very sensible question your grandson asked LOL. I wouldn't want to share with a bed wetter. ;D
-
Excellent news!
-
Your grandson's hilarious chookie, how did you respond? Keeping fingers & toes crossed for you & Ral.
-
So very pleased to hear that news, Chookie. Won't you be relieved to be settled down at home again after all these stresses and strains! How's Ral handling it all?
-
Slowly slowly chookie. On the homeward run now. Be good to get home.
Gert
-
Chookie - fingers, toes, eyes . . you name it . .. all crossed until next Wednesday!! Hang in there!!

-
Everything crossed here also Chookie, hope you'll be home next Wednesday.
My thoughts exactly, big hugs to you both
Xxxx

Thanks all for the good wishes. Ral is wanting to go home but more than happy to sit out the next week to get rid of this bug finally. Paul and Wendy will take me up to Cherokee this weekend as I haven't unpacked from the trip to Turkey.
When things settle, I will be writing Captain's Choice a long letter , documenting the poor organisation, pathetic leadership, and reheated food served at many of the lunch venues.
Until then , home first.
-
Good news that Ral will be discharged from hospital next week Chookie.I've got everything crossed for you :D :D

With any luck they won't offer you another trip for NIX!! Disgraceful. Reheated food and Bain Marie. Bad bad bad.
Gert
-
That is so funny Chookie - 'do you wet the bed' :D :D It's lovely that the kids are enjoying their Grandma staying for so long.
Captain's Choice should refund some or all of your money Chookie, I doubt you'd want to do the trip again after what you've been through and who could blame you.
Chins up, there is light at the end of the tunnel by the look of it. :-* :-* :-*
-
Great news chookie. Your grandson is a scream. Just what you need at the moment. 😊
-
fingers crossed you can both be home next week, kids say the funniest things ;D
-
Chookie that is promising news. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for you. It makes walking difficult but it is worth it. Take care. :-*

-
Thanks again everyone. Marina, hope all is well with you..
The crossed eyes are a bit of a problem, Bess, but other than that I am fine. Chaotic here, as you can imagine, but what I don't get done today won't disappear and I can get it done when I get back on Monday.
-
Good news chookie, I have my fingers crossed for both of you.
-
Nice to read your good news, Chookie. Been thinking of you and Ral, especially when I made Belgium Lemon Teacake. Made it quite often in the last couple of weeks as we had quite a number of visitors ;D
-
Thanks BZB. Nice to be remembered by ones recipes.
-
Nice to be remembered by ones recipes.
Oh you are chookie all the time in this house! even when I have no kitchen and can't cook. The time you made that soup for us always sticks in my mind and the lemon tea cake and choc delight and bread....
You changed the eating habits of this household for the better, don't you know.
Xxxxxx to you both and wishing for good news soon.
-
Chookie how's you doing? Is it looking good for Wednesday? Day does not go by that we all are thinking of ya.
Gert

Everything crossed here too.. Hope you both get to go home as planned x
Your gs is so cute lol... At least he has his priorities straight ha ha

Thanks for the kind words, DJ, Gert and Frossie. . Still looking good for Wednesday. Paul and family took me up to Cherokee yesterday and cleaned the house and finally packed away travel things.

Roll on Wednesday Chookie, your kitchen awaits you ;D

That is definitely a load off your mind chookie. You certainly do not need a reminder of that trip to unpack.
Gert

Words really don't seem enough when trying to express thanks. Thinking about a celebration dish, will post when I have an inspiration.

Thanks again for all the good wishes. It is a beautiful spring morning at Cherokee. It rained overnight so everything is green and lush. There is very little wind and the fruit trees are all in blossom. Things are certainly looking good.
