I use a combination of the two porridge recipes from the 2 everyday cook books...
For about 2 people:
100g rolled oats
400g milk/water (sometimes I do 50/50 othertimes 300ml water (just straight out of the filter) and 100ml milk (straight from the fridge)
pinch of salt
Cook on reverse speed 1-2 for 8-9 minutes at 90C
For a yummy variation I first blitz (turbo once or twice) a handful of almonds then add some craisons (dried cranberries) linseeds, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds, then add all the rest of the ingredients.
-
Good thinking - like the almonds. Reminds me that Rick had a recipe on his blog for porridge too:
http://ricksthermomixblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/cinnamon-apple-and-oat-porridge.html (http://ricksthermomixblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/cinnamon-apple-and-oat-porridge.html)

That one looks yummmo too Thermomixer. Thanks.
JB has made a really nice one that I had when I stayed there once with just a good quality mixed dried fruit. She must have pulsed them with the turbo button, and some seeds and almonds similar to what I posted. But you could add what ever you liked.
-
Yummy stuff! ILB, I too, like to add from my seed and nut bar (as I call it).
-
my current gluten free / dairy free porridge version is:
1 ripe banana
35g brown rice flakes
10g quinoa flakes
200g rice or soy milk
cook 7 mins, 90'c speed 4
-
We have been having issues with consistancy and temperature of the finished porridge. However we finally cracked it this morning ;D
100g oats
260 of boiling water from the kettle
260 of milk
on 90 degrees :-: ^^ for 10 minutes
-
Thanks Meagan - may need to contact Tenina for cahnges to EDC
-
I will hopefully get around to posting the changes from the EDC but seeing as this is a topic, the new EDC has:
Variation for a thicker porridge
100g Rolled Oats
400g Milk or Milk and water mixed
pinch salt
Method
Place all ingredients into TM bowl. Cook for 10 mins at 90 degrees on :-: Speed 1.
Tip: If soaking oats overnight, reduce cooking time by 2-3 mins
Even if not making the thicker porridge, the measurement of ingredients do not change but amend the new time for normal porridge is 8-9 mins at 90 degrees on :-: Speed soft

Hi all
For us, porridge works on a 1:4 ratio - 1 part oats to 4 parts water/milk. So for my 2 girls I do 50g oats, 200g milk/water 6 min 80 rev sp 1
HTH

Oh goodness. Will you look at all of the variations of porridge making in this thread. We have hit the nasty cold weather here in Tas and are needing some porridge for brekky. After so many porridge flops last year, I am looking for some serious inspiration. I guess I will just start at the top and keep going until I find one that suits our tastes. Tomorrow morning - ILB's version!! ;D
-
One tip from someone just coming out of winter...Whatever recipe you have, use speed 3 or 4 and that will avoid the porridge sticking to the bowl. Saves hours of cleaning. I picked this tip up from someone on here and it saved my sanity. ;) ;)
-
Wishing you all the best with that one Chelsea!
Its getting very cold here too. Might be a porridge morning here as well ;)
-
Katya, thank you for that hint re cooking porridge on speed 3/4 as the bowl pretty well self-cleaned afterwards. After yesterday's talk of porridge weather being here, I too decided to have it this morning so I soaked 50g oats overnight in 110g water (having first blitzed the oats for 2 sec/speed 8 as I like the finer style). This morning I added 20g boiling water and 130g hot milk & cooked it at 90o/reverse/speed 3 for 6 minutes and it was perfect for me. I don't eat a big breakfast so this amount does 2 serves for me.
-
Thanks Ladies. I still haven't had any luck (3 more different attempts today), although they thankfully were easy to clean as they were very runny.
I am starting to think that perhaps our idea of "porridge" is quite different to other peoples. We have our porridge thick and quite gluggy (no runny liquid left after cooking time). After it is cooked we spoon it into serving bowls and add milk. The milk pools around the porridge. To eat the porridge you kind of "cut it" with your spoon.
Is that what your porridge recipe is like JD? Perhaps I could double your quantities and see how I go? :)
-
Im a bit baffled Chelsea as thats how mine usually turns out. ???
-
ILB, sounds good so will give it a go tomorrow, thanks.
-
Well, it is obvious now that we all do not like the same type of porridge. The type you like Chelsea is exactly the type I do not like and that was how my Mum used to serve it up. I like to pour it straight into a bowl, add some sugar and eat it in a runnier form and that was what mine was like this morning. No extra milk needed. It has taken me 2 winters to get it how I like it so guess it is up to us all to do our own thing to suit our preferences. Keep at it, you will get there in the end Chelsea ;) ;)
-
It may depend a little on the oat type too. I prefer thick and add some extra some times - often too much extra !
-
Vaugly recall some discussions (perhaps even in this thread???) about how the rolled oats are cut ??? and the thickness?
I don't use quick oats, just the Lowan brand in safeway or if I'm in the healthfood shop I'll grab some from there too.
-
Made ILB recipe, perfect. Just as I like it, thick. No probs. with sticking to bowl, cooked on 3 and soaked bowl straight away. Used organic rolled oats . Thanks ILB.
-
I think the oats do make a difference Thermomixer and also whether or not they are soaked. I am trying to find a method for 150g of soaked steel cut organic oats, so recipes are needing quite a bit of modifying. I am determined to win and in the meantime the chooks are eating well from my experimenting!!! ;D

Glad to hear Chookie :-* Porridge is such a difficult thing due to everyones preferances
-
How did it go with the steel cut oats? That's our preference and I am hoping to find a place to start when our TMX is delivered this week. 6am breakfasts such still regardless of how nice the weather is.

DD1 and I like thinner porridge (in the direction of gruel) so I use 450 g milk/water, and I cook it for 15 mins (mainly because that suits the time it takes me to shower and dress ;D). Plus I use speed 3 to stop it sticking to the bottom. Otherwise my approach is very similar. I love your variation ideas - I intend to give them a try.
I often include apple puree in mine, which is yummy. I used to put a bit of cinnamon in too, but that's ruled out now because of DD2's allergy.

That's how ours turns out if we follow the UK book's 350g water/milk and 100oC temperature to 100g oats.
-
I have been makig porridge a bit for the little ones lately. I add an apple, quartered (I just remove the stalk - leave the seeds and skin for extra goodness) a small handful of almonds and small handful of dates - this way I dont have to add any sugar. Yumm
-
I have had no success with Porridge.
Today I followed ILB method, worked out well.
Ds loves it, hated all the other versions. We added cold milk & sugar to his bowl.
I used 100g oats
400 low fat milk
H :)

I absolutely LOVE porridge and eat it every morning for my breakfast, even in summer.
I don't mind ordinary oat porridge, but I have my own recipe which I make with ground millet, buckwheat, cashews and chia seeds, and then add whole oats and chopped banana ;D ;D Yum yum in my tum every morning!
-
I'm having trouble making porridge in my Thermo Chef. I don't have a reverse function, so I am using my butterfly and a low speed. It keeps catching on the bottom of the jug, so I have tried increasing the speed and reducing the temperature. However, the worst part is the texture - it is like glue.
I've just been using generic oats, so today I have bought a different brand. Maybe this will make a difference
-
Sue do you use water or milk or a combo?
-
I'm eating my porridge now. YUM !!! I used ILB's recipe. Halved it for 1 person. Cooked for 7 minutes on speed 3. Perfect
-
Have been cooking it in the microwave but also looking for a good recipe for the TC. My hubby doesn't cook his long enough and I tried to show him this morning (making a small batch) how the oats change when they are actually 'cooked'! Would love to try some of these. I believe porridge can catch a bit especially cooked with milk, even in the tmx or am I wrong? Doesn't matter if it does a bit, guess its just a bit trickier to clean.
Will have a play this above proportions. The solid and cuts with a spoon description is like the way I've always liked it not runny. (unless you mix some cold Milk in afterwards. )
;)

Lilli, it was really good. Nice and thick. I used 50g oats 100g water 100g milk and salt. 7 mins 80deg reverse speed 3. I added sugar after as I like it sweet. I filled the bowl with water straight away and after I finished breakky, it cleaned up very easily with just a wash cloth. No scrubbing required.
-
Lilli, I have been making a runny porridge for myself in the TC. I've mixed some Crio Bru with it sometimes too. I used 1/3 cup of oats(about 40g I think)' one small apple ( sliced with my Ikea corer/slicer) 2 tablespoons of yogurt, and 3/4 cup low fat milk. I whizz them together briefly on a high speed, and then cook at 70C on speed 4 for 7 minutes. For some reason, the addition of the apple stops it from catching on the bottom so much, and the sweetness from the apple means that I don't need to add honey. Sometimes I substitute some of the milk for water too.
-
I love this recipe. I had been using the variation (100g oats/400g liquid) but that was a bit too thick for us. Today I went back to ILB's original recipe and it was perfect. I made 1.5 times (3 of us eating) and I cooked it for 9 mins and it was great.
-
I use stock instead of water.
-
What flavour stock do you use please?
-
vegetable or ligth chicken stock, sometimes with a little bit of paprika ("pimentón").
-
Thanks. Would that make it like congee? I don't know much about it?
