Title: A choc cake with pink piggies.
Post by: andiesenji on February 21, 2013, 01:40:35 am
I'm posting this link for the folks who like new ideas for  decorating cakes.

I think this one is just adorable and I am so sorry that I can't eat chocolate.

Piggies in a mud bath cake. (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=338516686248481&set=a.130469407053211.18689.130468153720003&type=1&ref=nf)

I think the sides of the "pool" are Kit-Kat bars or something similar.

Love the cake andieesenji.  Have just bought my 17 yr old GD a book on cake decorating and an icing set for her birthday.  She wants to learn how to make the flowers and lace work as well.

Do you just buy the piggies already made?  How cute is that cake, love it.

I don't know how the piggies are made.  I have been searching for a web site for the cake but so far no luck.

Just thinking . . in the comments someone mentioned fondant and pink tootsie rolls (don't know what they are yet)
Maybe something like little round cakepops - then shaped and iced?  Ears - maybe little pink triangles you can buy from cake decorating places . .
tails, noses, arms, legs etc. fondant??  Where's Maddy when you need her?? ;D ;D ;D

Well Amy, that is within your capabilities, so make it for her next birthday.   I think it is great, I don't have a girls birthday till June I probably will have forgotten about it by then.  You could make the pigs just out of fondant  like play dough.

You really think I could do that Brenda? :D :D Mum's birthday isn't until October, so I could make it for mother's day instead ;D

Of course you could, Amy! Now's the time to start playing around with different things to see how the little pigs could turn out.  I'm hoping it may be easier than we think!! :D

Amy I love pigs too. I think this would make me a good birthday cake, and it will be cooler then.

Thanks Andie that cake is great.

Amy I think the cake would actually be quite easy, to me it looks like a plain round cake covered in ganache, with a thicker layer on top which you could swirl with a palet knife, i would then use kit kat bars stuck to the outside and make the pigs out of fondant. There are lots of instructions on how to make farm animals out of fondant on utube and it just takes a little practice. Debbie Brown also has great instructions for making animals in her books and they work out really well. My DD has made a few of her cakes for VCE food tech and they have come out exactly as in the pictures.

You just need a little time and practice and you could do it.

Okay, its decided... mum will be getting this cake for mother's day ;D I better start practicing my skills with fondant! If I'm really bad I can always postpone it until her birthday ;)

GF, thanks for those links. She is an amazing woman!

of course you could make it Amy  :).....like mentioned, the piggies are made of fondant, which you  can buy it already pink from cake decorating stores or spotlight, or you could model them with  marzipan and tint with pink gel paste...just like playdough  ;)
It's such a cute cake  8)

There you go Amy! Knew Maddy would know how - and the alternatives - without even batting an eye. This is an education for me too! If you can pull this one off Amy- just imagine the spinoffs you could come up with!! :)

Not nervous Amy.. That's just excitementl lol. Why don't you grab some play dough, play around with it for a while to get the feeling of the shapes ... And then go for it. :)

Give it a try Amy :D
You could also use pink marshmallows to make marshmallow fondant for the piggies. I think Tenina has a recipe for the marshmallow fondant, or have a look at this website http://cakejournal.com/tutorials/how-to-make-marshmallow-fondant/ (http://cakejournal.com/tutorials/how-to-make-marshmallow-fondant/)

Love debbie brown.
Fondant is easy Amy. Just think of it as play dough. And all you need is water to stick bits together. Best of all you can make things out of it weeks in advance. Here is my first attempt from a few years ago. It's Timmy the baby sheep from Shaun the sheep. Yes I rolled all those little balls and stuck them on with water. Very easy.

You'll find it much easier than you think Amy, just watch some utube videos and you'll be making all sorts of animals.

I really like the Debbie Brown books because her instructions are simply and most library's seem to stock at least a couple of her books. Like others have said you can start well in advance and just keep them in an airtight container until needed.

LOL... if only you knew what I am making for..... oops, I can't say too much :-X :-)) ;D

Kimmy, that little sheep is soooo cute. SD likes Shaun the Sheep so maybe I will have to do a sheep theme for Father's day :D

I'm glad everyone has enjoyed the piggy cake picture.

I have found another, with a recipe (http://www.friendsfoodfamily.com/friends-food-family/2013/02/pigs-in-the-mud-peanut-butter-fudge-cake-piggy-cake.html), and directions.

A friend sent me a note on facebook to say that the original  was apparently  posted on a German FB page and the top is supposed to be Nutella  which is more "mud-colored" than chocolate.
However that depends on where you live.  In Georgia the mud is red while in Wisconsin it is almost black.

Also, apparently piggy cakes are very popular.  Here (http://www.google.com/search?q=pigs+in+mud+cake&hl=en&client=firefox-a&hs=py8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=s&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=MhwnUbDFK4nwiwLGs4GQDA&ved=0CDAQsAQ&biw=1194&bih=1203) is a link to many pig-themed cakes.
