Title: Weavils in my pantry, uughh
Post by: Halex on February 20, 2013, 05:26:19 am
Just cleaned out my pantry & got rid of all the weavils & everything that was open that had a clip on it rather than in tupperware.

Anything I can do to stop them returning.

They even got into some wrapped lollies that cp was given at a party.

I have thrown out so much stuff, a real waste :( >:(

Umm, just the leaves Hally. I've only ever used dried ones.

Freeze flours, nuts, rice etc - thise that they love - at least 2 hours prior to opening the pkt for first time. This apparently kills the eggs before they've hatched.

Buy the pantry moth traps and keep them in the cupboard. I'm  not sure about bay leaves being a deterrent.

I keep my nuts and seeds in the fridge, and what do you know there is not much space to put food  :-)) along with all those sauces and jars that say refrigerate after opening.

I want to put the bar fridge in the laundry to keep all of the nuts, seeds condiments etc, so they don't take up my main fridge space.

We've had a battle with pantry moths over the last couple of months - traps and freezing stuff was all I could do.  Have just invested in a small bar size freezer - just four drawers - but worth it's weight in gold!!

Where do you get pantry moth traps? The supermarket? I get moths flying around too but they can't get into anything (I hope).

I get mine from the supermarkets, CP - 2 to a packet I think - not cheap but worth it for me!

Hally take everything out of your pantry and clean every surface with vinegar it's amazing where they the lay eggs. Check under shelves walls ect good luck.

Oh Hally, what a job, I wonder if you could spray with anything before you restock.  I know if I leave any flour or such in the caravan it always has weevils in it when I check before going on holidays so now I clear everything out.

Hally I know how you feel. Almost exactly 2 years ago when we got back from Singapore I had pantry moths and all their off spring all through my pantry. I threw out a fortunes worth of nuts, seeds and dried fruits. Every container seemed to have them. I now keep all my nuts and seeds in the freezer or fridge. Like CP there isn't much room for food. I have a second fridge going at the moment but as soon as the cooler weather comes, and all the lovely fruit goes away I will close it down.

Hally that would be a nightmare discovering that.  We all have so much in our pantries, no room in our fridge and freezers for anything else either which makes it hard.  I hate the fact that my fridge is so full of opened jars too CP & Cookie.

I have lost a lot of food to pantry moths, found some in my dried chilli powder one time. Not fun and such a waste of money.
I found this, thought it might help you and others Hally

1. Inspect everything in your pantry. Although moths tend to infest flours and grains, you should also check dried fruit, candy, pet food, etc. You're looking for adult moths, larvae, and eggs, which may look like webbing or clumps of grains. Discard any infested foods outside, away from the home.

2. Thoroughly clean every nook, cranny, corner, and crevice with a vacuum and/or warm, soapy water (dry thoroughly). If there were signs of infestation, discard trash or vacuum bags outside, away from the home.

3. Wipe shelves, food containers, and other surfaces with white vinegar. For added protection, use a few drops of essential oil like peppermint, citronella, eucalyptus, or tea tree.

4. To prevent infestation, store foods in airtight glass, metal, or plastic containers.

5. Bay leaves repel pantry insects. Place the leaves inside canisters and cupboards.

6. When you bring dry goods home from the store, place them in a plastic bag in the freezer for one week to kill any eggs. If you have space, you can use the freezer for long term storage.

Thinking about it, I've never had a problem with them in Canberra. Previously in Perth I put 2-3 dried bay leaves on each shelf in the pantry which kept the little stinkers at bay (pardon the pun) :)

Good luck. Pantry cleaning is such a time consuming task.

Bummer H!
Do you not keep your nuts in the freezer?

....I only have lock & lock containers now....it's completely airtight!  I have replaced all my tupperware storage containers with it, as I found T/ware is not completely airtight  :-))
I pick up bulk packs from tvsn when on special

Maddy, you would think tupperware woukd be perfect.

Some of the tupperware survived I think, tomorrow will empty a little contents out of the remaing tupperware. I had lovely waffle cones, about 30 stored & there was  suss black bits on 2 cones, binned!! All nuts, grains gone. I have some opened pasta will have to look at those  too.

Tomorrow will be all day in my oantry, is quite large, deep!!

All that money >:( :-\

Such a waste Hally. It's happened to me in the past but not in this house.
Look very closely in your pantry, not for the moths but for the eggs "maggots".
Look in the areas under the shelves for the moths and look in the nooks and crannies for the eggs as that's where they are laid and hidden.. They are usually in the corners and between the shelves and walls.
After emptying the pantry thoroughly clean and scrub all corners and areas where the shelves meet the walls as that's where you find the eggs. When all cleaned put everything back in place discarding anything that may have been infested. When done use the pantry moth traps just in case some have been missed. Follow Jen's instructions as more detailed than mine but same principal. Good luck.
I have been here now for 3 years and not one yet. I found that when I purchased bulk bags of flour, rice etc that's when I was infested. Maybe coincidence but I never had a problem when buying 1kg of packaged goods.

Often the weevil eggs are there when you buy stuff. Never had a problem in Sdney but up here...oh boy. Just the right conditions for  hatching so I learned quickly  to put things in the fridge first for a day before putting them in the pantry. I do miss my old huge fridge i used as a cold pantry but sold recently. It was crazy for two people to need  4 fridges.  Now I have two bar fridges and my big one. Of course you do need an outside fridge in Cairns . Lol!

Not replacing items until I need them. I am assuming sealed pkts of flour are ok, might put them in freezer on rotation today. Have to take bread & frozen veg out to do this.

I just couldnt bare to add up what I have lost.

Getting cp to school a little earlier, the shops, then home. Will be doing this in my swimmers so I can cool off when needed :)

Well tossed them all :(

I couldnt believe it yesterday, vacuumed, washed out with hot soapy water. Bay leaves out on shelves

The shelf where the flour is kept, found 4 little beasts.

Vacuuming each shelf, washing down with peppermint water, then vinegar, traps on each shelf & bay leaves. Bay leaves in every container, Bout 1/3 way through.

NEVER AGAIN

Sounds like you've done an extremely thorough job! :)

The pantry looks great Maddie, crossing my fingers that I never have that problem I've had one or two in different packets over the years but luckily never spread as far as I know.

Maddie I really like the look of those lock and lock products, I'm not a fan of my tupperware, I haven't bought any in years and don't bother arranging for replacements when they break so slowly have less and less.

I know this is pretty old now but even if you have it in Tupperware you need to put all flours etc in the freezer first. The weavers come into your house through packaged food. (Even sifting wont get rid of it)

It's a constant drama here but because my MIL won't listen, it won't change :(
