Hi, I'm just resurfacing after a very busy work period and I've been given an unexpected bonus by work, I'm thinking of purchasing one of these. I can't find a lot of reviews on them and I've got a lot of questions to ask the distributor, but thought some of you may have heard of them or know of someone who has one.

Looks fantastic wonder I want one ;D
-
Looks very interesting Wonder would be interested to hear what you find out about it. Do you know the cost?
-
The costs are on the link Yvette. Looks like they have a few models
-
Thanks MF must have missed it :)
-
Wonder, looks great, woud be interested in ine too if it gave the real tandor taste :)
How dd you hear of it?
Nice to have you bck too :)
H :)
-
I see they have some recipes, might be a good idea to do some of the recipes & see what thhey are like :)
-
Good idea H :)
-
Looks interesting. Saw a uTube once of an Indian lady cooking satays and wondered what it was. I love cooking with a fire, and being able to cook outside especially during summer and think its great to enjoy authentic tasting food.
-
oooohhhh Buy it, I want one too. :)
-
I adore food cooked in a tandoor. I would prefer one of these to an outdoor pizza oven.
You need one Wonder and you can test it out for us. :) :)
-
I have not seen one of these but I like the idea. I always think if you receive a bonus then you should buy something that is a luxury - not something that you can get anytime. Nice to look back and have something to show for your hard work. Yes please - go for it and then let us all know so that we can add it to our list of must haves - ie Pizza Makers, Pie Makers, Ice Cream Makers, Vacuum Sealers............. oh I love it!!
-
Wow I never knew you could buy a home version.
I agree with everyone Wonder - buy it!!
-
I thought there would be a few people on here that would be interested ;D
I saw the company at the Good Food and Wine show in Melbourne a few years ago and had kept it in the back of my mind ever since, when we were having dinner at our local Indian last week and my son was devouring piece after piece of Naan I remembered it again. I haven't spoken to the distributors yet but will sometime this week. We have a portable wood pizza oven that I've never been completed happy with because it doesn't retain the heat very well so it's great for cooking pizzas while you keep the fire hot but I've had no success with anything else. This tandoor also has a pizza cooking tray attachment so if that works I would put the actual pizza oven on ebay and hope I can get something for it - expensive lesson learnt.
My main questions are:
- how hot does it get?
- how long does it retain heat for?
- are the pizza's difficult to get on and off the tray holder?
- how long does the clay insert last?
- have they had any issues with the clay insert cracking?
Can anyone think of others?
-
Wonder did you read the FAQ's that might answer some of the questions
-
Wonder I haven't heard of these but we have a small one an Indian friend made us years ago using a stainless steel garbage bin as the outside with the clay & insulation inside. It works very well and food from it tastes so much better. Yes the clay has cracked a little but that doesn't make any difference. Would be good for you to be able to try some food cooked in it before you get one. Perhaps they might have a cooking class that you could book into. Goodluck!!
-
Thanks Yvette and Trudy. I'm just waiting on the distributors to give me a call to get some extra information. I will keep everyone posted.
-
Not looking. No not me not looking. No no no. I WILL NOT LOOK ;) ;D
-
OK so I've decided to go for. I spoke to the company owner today and the answers to all my questions were positive,I also managed to have an email exchange with someone I found through a blog entry who has one and she was also impressed.
Delivery will probably be this weekend but I'm sure it will take us a while to get the hang of it. Will keep you all updated
We are buying the middle of the bigger model.

That's great Wonder I am excited for you let us know how it goes when you start cooking :)
-
Fantastic wonder.
Where are you goong to put it? Thats my problem :o
-
We have a lot of decking and it's on castors so we should be able to fit it without any problems. It only needs to be undercover while cooking or cooling.
-
Oh Wonder how exciting :D
Keep us all informed as I would love one for my balcony.
They look fantastic ;D
-
How exciting for you, I was going to ask how is it heated but I just had a read of the link and it uses heat beads, it will be very interesting hearing how you go and what you cook.
-
I'll start saving.. I need to, my grocery bill was $254 this morning. Admittedly I did need meat.
-
We will all be waiting to hear your verdict! Sounds like another must have purchase!!!
-
Will be interesting to see how many of us buy one ;D
I have already planted the seed by telling DH and I have watered it too by showing him the link ;D
-
Cant wait to hear how you go wonder :)
-
Looks like you will be next MF ;D ;D
-
It looks very interesting. I've never seen one but I do remember watching food safari and they did an Indian episode and it may have been cooked in an older version of one of those.
Will be interested to see how it goes.
-
who will end up with one in the shopping thread... ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Well delivery was yesterday and we did the firing of the pot, this was just lighting a small fire with charcoal in the bottom and letting it burn slowly for 6 hours, we lit it early afternoon and then just eft it going while we were out. Around lunch time today we fired it back up and cooked some chicken cutlets on the grill which I had marinated in Greek seasoning, they are for souvlaki tomorrow but they came up beautifully and just like at the charcoal chicken shop. We then cooked chicken for butter chicken and finally some naan. We have a long way to go but are extremely happy with it and there is endless possibilities of how we'll be able to use it. Here are a few photos.

-
Looks like lots of fun and experimenting will be going on at your place..
-
Oh wow Wonder! I think you've started something :)
Does the naan just magically stick to the sides? Or is there a trick?
-
Wow wonder that looks like fun.
-
That all looks amazing. The naan has me sold.
-
Me too Cookie...... Awesome and a must buy!!! Thanks Wonder, DH may not agree but he will love it when he sees what it can do. ;)
-
Love it! You have a lot of good tastes and times ahead. One if the most interesting things about a flame is learning to control heat without a dial.
-
It certainly looks a very good buy seeing all that yummy food Wonder. ;D
-
The food looks delicious Wonder, love it. ;D
Marie
-
Making my mouth water - love it. I am sure there are lots of taste experiences ahead for you.
-
We have lots of experimenting to do and are both very excited. The Tandoor this morning was still quite warm - probably about 100 - 150 degrees so we are thinking with a bit of planning ahead it would be great to have a slow cooked roast left cooking overnight after the high heat needed for things like Tandoori meats and Naan, we are thinking a slow cooked shoulder of greek lamb would be fantastic.
The naan does magically stick (99% of thetime) and unfortunately doesn't always magically unstick, but it's all a learning curve and we will get better over time. There's also going to be a lot of trial and error with the making of the dough. I used two recipes I tried online which were very similar but slightly different quantities of ingredients and we found one much better than the other. The dough needs to be very sticky which we then found hard to work with and we lost a few to the fire or the wall or both. I'm trialling simple doughs that don't use yeast or eggs because I'm sure that's what our local restaurant uses and we also didn't slather them with butter or ghee which I think meant they were a little crispier than at the shop but we were very happy for a first try. DH is quite excited about the purchase and is very happy with the quality of the unit which is great, the customer service was also great and the couple we dealt with are very passionate about the product and only too happy to help and let us know they would be available on mobile all weekend if we had any troubles. All up so far I'm very happy to recommend.
-
Wow Wonder the food looks amazing, if only I had a spare $800, let us know what else you cook :)
-
Looks fantastic :)
Your dogs happy too :D
-
Maybe I should ask for a bonus ;)
-
I just snuck out and had a quick look and the oven thermometer in the Tandoor is ready at 150 degrees still with the charcoal from last night so we are just defrosting (via microwave) a small lamb shoulder that was already marinated in the freezer and will put that in and slow cook for the rest of the afternoon. I'm thinking we'll need to add a little more charcoal to keep it at that temp for the afternoon but shouldn't need very much. DS will be excited that he can have lamb souvlaki for tea tonight.
-
yummy Wonder
-
Looks like beautiful food. Didi mention how jealous I am?!
-
Yummy please can I see a photo when cooked?
-
I think I will buy an extra lotto ticket this week. ;D
-
Good idea Cookie :o :o
-
That looks fantastic Wonder. All things considered, $800 is not a lot of money. It's only 41% of the cost of TMX and about the price of a good BBQ.
-
That looks like a lot of fun Wonder.
Gert
-
I love the logic MEP!
-
I ended up over cooking the lamb a little when I had to add more coals to increase the temp and got sidetracked with work. It was still a huge hit and tasted great. It's going to take a while to get used to increasing, decreasing and keeping the temp stable.
-
That lamb looks so good Wonder. Just like a Turkish restaurant. Yummy.
-
Oooh wonder, food parcels needed here please :)
-
I think it looks lovely Wonder - you will get the hang of it very quickly if you keep using it as much as you have since it was delivered.
-
That photo is making my mouth water, yum yum.
-
Love it Wonder.
Gert
-
That looks delicious Wonder.
-
It looks delicious Wonder. What a great buy. :D
-
Yummy yummy what are you going to try next?
-
what are you going to try next, yummy photo... ;D
-
Love, love love it!
-
I think we'll try pizza next, not sure when though either Friday or the weekend. We also have some lamb cutlets in the freezer that I'll think of doing as Tandoor living has a picture of cutlets on their Facebook page and they look great.
-
Wonder you might never have to use your kitchen again :)
-
who else is going to buy one..
-
Yvette, it is very versatile and with a bit of thinking I'm sure we could make most things on there if we wanted but unfortunately i'm not home most days and DH isn't as adventurous as I am.
Obbie - surely someone else will succumb
-
Wonder how long does it take to heat up if you wanted to cook a roast or chicken pieces?
-
Yvette I think it would be around 30 - 40 mins but not 100% sure because we were playing around with it for a while before I decided to cook the chicken. I'll take more notice next time we start it up.
-
The lamb looks delicious Wonder :)
-
Thanks Wonder
-
Sorry no photos but we used the tandoor to cook 2 shoulders of lamb shoulders, one stuffed and one just marinated. It was a bit of a struggle to keep the temp low but the end result was fantastic. Loved by everyone and our guests are going to purchase one as a 50th present for one of them.
I' m hoping to try smoking some chicken this weekend.
-
Wonder, great that you are still using it..
-
Obbie we've loved everything that has come out of it so far and it's easy to use so very happy with the purchase.
-
Your food looks and sounds amazing. Think we will be next as DH loves the look of what you have cooked and it wod be ideal on our balcony. Thanks for sharing Wonder :)
-
MF if you have a look at their Facebook page they have a lot of photos of what they have cooked. They have also just released a gyros attachment.
-
It does look amazing.
At the moment we are enjoying our rotisserie :)
Wonder, hw often do you use it?
Is it expensive to run with heatbeads ?
:)
-
Hally we've used it about once a week at the moment, sometimes just cooking one thing and other days cooking our meal and then also cooking up some marinated meat to use for sandwiches/wraps later in the week. It retains heat so well after heating up very high it always seem a shame to waste it.
We only use charcoal and just a single firelighter to get it burning when we first light it, I've never been a big fan of heat beads and always found them quite expensive. We purchased a 20kg bag of charcoal at the local charcoal chicken shop which was $25 and we use around 2 - 3kgs each time depending on how hot we want the tandoor to get and how long we are going to be cooking for.
-
I thought heatbeads would be expensive.
I too woud want to cook up as much as possibe while it was on as not to waste the charcoal.
Do you need to clean it out or just add more chrcoal on top.
Will you use it much in the winter?
-
I could be tempted to get one, maybe at Christmas
-
Also thinking next summer, it needs to be easy to use & minimum work.
:)
-
I love the thought of what you can cook in it.
-
Hally, we just sweep out the left over coals and ash before using the next time. The outside around te top has got a bit tarnished but we haven't bothered cleaning it as it doesn't affect the cooking or look too bad and the rds we just clean as soon as we ae used them. The inside is basically self cleaning because of the high temperatures used to cook pizzas, naan and tikka meat.
-
In the book Consider the Fork there is a chapter devoted to how heat is used in certain cooking things and the Tandoor is included. I was amazed at how many things it could be used for and why it is so efficient at what it does. Amazing and ancient cooking Thingy.
I don't think I would want one here as it would generate too much heat on my patio . The BBG is heat enough on summer days. But having said that, it sure is a neat cooking pot!
Gert
-
I'm very tempted to get one as well. The food looks wonderful and it's not that costly when you think about it.
-
Thx Wonder. Keep posting :)
-
We had an Nina dinner last night. Butter chicken, tandoori chicken and fantastic naan bread. We also tried some tandoori mushrooms but we cooked them for way too long and they fell of the skewer into the coals.
-
Yum Wonder they look great, glad you are enjoying your tandoor oven
-
Yummm, its tempting me :)
-
Just adding a photo of the meal which tapatalk wouldn't let me add earlier
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/27/byrary5u.jpg)
Both kids thought it was the best home cooked meal they had ever eaten and we all ate way too much.
-
Wow, love your serving dishes too, just like an Indian restaurant :)
How long from start to finish?
Have you roasted small chickens on skewers, i was wondering how much food you could cook at once to feed a group.
Did you buy the cookbook too?
The more I look at your food & the website, the more I am tempted.
:)
-
Looks delicious wonder.
-
That all looks so good Wonder. :D
-
Hally, the bowls were on special at Aldi a few weeks ago and out local Indian uses exactly the same.
It's really hard to say start to finish because I marinated the meat in two different marindaes the night before and also made the naan bread dough and then I was cooking during the day and doing bits and pieces. It felt like a long time but I messed a few things up and had to redo and then had some visitors and was also making soup and biscuits. I used the recipes from their website for the butter chicken, tandoori and their naan but with only the barest amount of yeast added. I found their recipes to be very poorly written, so now that I know they are a winner I'll rewrite them to make them easier, I think I could also do the butter chicken pretty much all in the TMX.
We haven't cooked small chickens but did slow cook 2 lamb shoulders on a tray which was enough for about 12 with salads. We are also on a learning curve with the charcoal as we've never cooked with it before. I didn't realise they have a cookbook, we've just used recipes on their website and looked up others. Last week after cooking pizzas and once the oven had cooled a little, I just put a whole chicken in and left it to cook and the meat was so moist and tender it was fantastic for sandwiches and a pasta bake for no effort.
Have you had a look at their facebook page? they seem to update that a little more often than the website.
-
Your meal looks so delicious Wonder.
-
Thanks Wonder, I have emailed them some questions.
Do you keep yours in the same position or bring it out to,use? They are haevy.
I might try & make the butter chicken in the oven & see how I go. Love good butter chicken.
The cookbook might be good :)
How long was the chicken in for? Sounds like a great plan.
Thx
Just looked at their facebook page, mmm mouth watering food :)
-
Wonder, i am going to try the butter chicken from their website. I dont have the tandori colouring, it says it makes no difference to taste just colour. Do you use it? I have everything else, I love butter chicken but have yet to find a really good recipe.
H :)
-
Wonder that meal looks amazing and I'm sure it tasted the same.
-
Omg, just showed dh facebook page & he said buy one :o
-
Quick, before he changes his mind ;)
-
Hally is about to land in the shopping thread
-
Wow Hally. We were a bit like that after looking at the Facebook page. We love ours and think we will enjoy t even more once we are used to the charcoal a bit better. If you are buying one make sure you get the bigger size because you are limited by the size of the hole at the top.
We tend to keep ours in the same spot because we have a bench beside it for ease but its on castors so very easy to move around and we have moved it down to our back door when it was raining and we were cooking pizzas. They advise its best kept under cover.
-
Omg, just showed dh facebook page & he said buy one :o
;D ;D ;D I'm sure both of you will love it!!
-
I know ;D the facebook page must sells itself, the food looks amazing :)
Dh doesnt know how much it is, but he was exactly the same with therme, just buy it :)
I have 2 concerns,
1. Will I use it enough &
2. Is it a lot of work.
-
Wonder, looking at the SS2, did younbuy the skewer stoppers & the pizza kit?
How many rods do you need?
:)
-
We bought the skewer stoppers after Ramon showed us one when he delivered the tandoor, to be honest so far we have found them a little fiddly to clean so on Sunday just used potatoes on the bottom of each skewer to stop the meat sliding off. I think once we have a bit more of a system going we will probably go back to the stoppers. We purchased the pizza kit as we were very unhappy with the wood pizza oven we had and put it on ebay and we all love the pizzas from the tandoor. We have just got the rods that came with the SS2, I can't remember exactly how many but so far have found them to be enough. On Sunday we cooked 2kgs of thigh fillets and 10 mushrooms and used 4 of the big size and 1 smaller one for the mushrooms. DH and DS are still going on about how good the naan was this morning.
I had exactly the same concerns as you and while we find it does take a bit of time, we are still learning and have got much quicker. Pizza's now take very little time while the Indian banquet on Sunday took me longer than it needed to. All that said I really enoy the process and DH and I are having a great time learning about it.
-
Thanks Wonder.
Getting the SS2 without the table, the stoppers, the pizza kit & the recipe book ;D
Will order today.
Long weekend here, but doubt that can get it to me by then.
Very very excited.
Will have to use it weekly to get used to it & also to get monies worth, plus our rotisserie :)
H :-*
-
Great Hally will look forward to hearing about your cooking adventures also :)
-
That's fantastic Hally. I really hope you enjoy it as much as we have. The owners were fantastic when we were buying and bought it out to us the next morning. I can't wait to hear how you go.
-
Spoke to the lady she was great.
Orderd & will be here next week :)
I told her that it was you that told me about the product & we both love to cook :)
I have the SS2 Deluxe, pizza attachment, stoppers & the tandor cookbook.
Very excited.
Will be buying charcoal & firelighters, ready to go :)
-
Have the butter chciken rub marinating over night.
Its going to,be good :)
-
Hally that will be so very exciting. I am even excited for you.
-
Cookie, you are welome to come over when it arrives, we need to burn it for 4 hours before we cook. Then you cn come & play :)
Bring some meat, we can play, it cooks heaps in one go, it will be fun ;D you & dh can have an Indian feast to go :)
Then when you think its on the way out, you then beef or lamb in & it slow cooks it over night. :)
:)
-
Hally it sounds like you will have a fantastic time playing.
-
Yes, very excited.
My other concern is I really dont want a fire. I am a little worried about leaving the oven after cooking & going to bed.
Wonder, have you made the non yeast naan? the lady sent me the recipe she says its fantastic.
Cookie, my plan a monday or thursday afternoon, come over about 2.30 we will get it going, you can watch it I will pick up cp & then we can cook. Lr is being picked up at 6 by dh. So I am sure we can cook some great things :)
:)
-
Wonder, she also explained that the dough works much better if it is made the day before & rested in the fridge.
:)
-
Hally we tried their new recipe on Sunday and I only added the tiniest (1/8 tsp) amount of yeast. I had a long discussion with the chef and owner at our local Indian restaurant on Friday and they let me feel the texture of the naan dough and told me they also use no yeast and make the dough 24 hours ahead of time. We made it on Saturday night and put in the fridge overnight and then took it back out in the morning and left on the bench all day. When we were cooking the chicken i then formed it into balls and placed them on an oiled tray and covered with glad wrap until we were ready to cook them. When we were ready I just flattened them well with my hands and put on the ghadi and tried to stretch them a little until they were quite thin. The recipe makes 8 but as it's your first try you might want to make double the recipe, we lost quite a few to the coals the first couple of times. This was by far the best naan we've ever made, and the texture of the dough was very similar to that at our local restaurant.
We have also been using the Tandorri Chicken #2 recipe and love it.
Sorry for the long post here but my work computer doesn't like this forum and I can't PM.
Recipe #1
You will need:
500g bakers or bread plain flour (not just standard plain flour)
0.5 teaspoon yeast
1 teaspoon spoon sugar
1 tablespoon salt
330 ml warm water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
ghee or clarified butter (for basting)
fresh garlic (for basting)
nigella seeds (as a garnish - optional
nigella seeds (as a garnish - optional)
Method:
- Combine in a bowl water (reci (recipe 2), salt, sugar, and yeast, and then whisk with a fork to combine.
- Add the liquid mixture to the flour and blend with hands for a few minutes until it combines (it may be sticky! - don't add extra flour).
- Add the oil and continue to mix for 10-15 minutes or so until the oil is absorbed into the dough and the dough becomes velvety in texture (it may still be quite sticky - and that is ok).
( - If you have a bread machine, simply add the water (or milk), salt, sugar, and yeast mixture to the mixing bowl, then the flour. Mix on the dough setting for a few minutes and then add the oil once the ingredients have come together. You sometimes need to prod the mixture with a wooden spoon to help it mix and come together. Allow the dough to mix in the machine for the full cycle (typically 1.5 hours))
- Allow the dough to stand covered for about 4 hours. When it doubles in size, "punch" it down - this will happen a few times over 4 hours. (if you use a bread machine, allow the dough to stand for about an extra 2.5 hours after the cycle has finished)
- Place the dough in the refrigerator overnight, and preferable for 18-24 hours.
- Make balls of dough that are about 80-100 g in size. Dust them with flour to help stop the stickiness.
- Roll out the dough balls (using flour to stop it sticking). If desired, sprinkle with a few nigella seeds. Cook in the tandoor as you normally would (make sure your gaddi is damp - just run it under the tap). If the dough is not sticking to the tandoor wall, simply wet your fingers and rub some water on the dough surface that is to hit the tandoor wall.
-
Thx Wonder, did you mix it in Thermie?
Too late for tonights butter chicen but next week once the oven arrives. I am so excited.
DH says , surely you have all cooking styles covered now, lol :)
-
sounds great fun, Hally
-
Yes, very excited :)
Even looking forward tomthe butter chicken tonight that I am just doing in the oven.
:)
-
Notification 3-5 days delivery :)
I would say 5 to WA.
-
Wonder, that's a cool looking toy. Much better than the clay ovens I've seen in Indian restaurants :)
Hally, looking forward to your pics :P
-
So am I ;D
:)
I have told many friends, looks like I will be having a tandor party at some stage, maybe instead of christmas in juky this year :)
-
That sounds like a good idea Hally.
-
Cokie, by the time you get home I will have used it a couple of times, so we can have great fun :)
-
How exciting Hally, looking forward to the photos.
-
After last nights diner, it is excitement plus in this house.
Jen you are welcome to come for a play at some stage too, must bring the meat you want to cook :)
-
Sounds like a good idea Hally, I've been looking at these since Wonder bought hers very tempted.
-
Ooh it sounds like lunch at Hally's place Jeninwa..
-
Sounds like a pla, monday or a thursday. I think we should cook lots of meat, once the charcoal is on might as well use it. I have 10 skewers :) you can fit 1/2 a chicken on a skewer I think :)
-
Wow, that is 5 chickens between 3 of us.
I would love that Hally. Then I may, no will want one.
-
Ok, once is arrived we will book a date :)
You guys can warch it while I pick up cp, as I dont want to leave the fire unattended :)
-
Hally I wouldn't be too worried about leaving it unattended, the heat is fully contained within the stainless steel outer shell but can understand why you are a little nervous.
-
Ok, once is arrived we will book a date :)
You guys can warch it while I pick up cp, as I dont want to leave the fire unattended :)
I would love to join the party. This looks like a fun thing to have especially in the winter.
Gert
-
Gert, I am only a plane ride away :)
:)
-
I am ony way with chickens.
Gert
-
Sounds like a plan :)
-
Wonder,
Is it really hot on the outside ? I'd be worried my kids would burn themselves. I love the look of them though and we looovvee that kind of food. It might be a wait until we get our tax cheque purchase lol ....... but just wonder about the safety with kids.
-
Gert, can you pick me up as you fly past?
-
Debbiebillg, the main outside doesn't get very hot but the handle on the lid does. We haven't had any troubles with our dogs or kids moving around or getting too close.
-
Gert, can you pick me up as you fly past?
Sure can.
Gert
-
Ok thanks, I don't think they'd touch the lid ...... they know better ! I'd be more concerned they'd bump into it if mucking around like little boys do !
-
All aboard the Tandor Express to mine :)
More the merrier of my friends, join the feast :)
:)
-
Just tracked my box,, its on the road :D
Wonder, what are you cooking in it this weekend?

I might as well come with Gert, the more the merrier. ;D ;D
-
It would be such a shame if the parcel accidentally made it's way to Queensland instead Halex, lol
-
. . . or maybe the northern parts of Sydney?? I'd be more than happy to sign for it . . . :o ;D ;D
-
No its headed straight for WA :)
-
You've created a lot of interest Hally - great to see. Not sure if we will be using it this weekend as we are out with DS's sporting commitments most of the weekend so looks like we will having freezer food. :(
-
Hoping mine arrives in time for next weekend. Very excited :)
:)
-
Wonder, I've been keeping an eye on this thread since you got yours, checking every now and again what you've been cooking ........ all the food looks amazing !
-
It does indeed :)
Hope to be adding to the photos soon :)

Hally I'm sure you will be much better at keeping the updates going. I've forgotten to take photos of most things we have done.

Hally I'm sure you will be much better at keeping the updates going. I've forgotten to take photos of most things we have done.
They were probably too yummy. That's when cameras are usually forgotten :D
-
My brother rang today and this was the conversation ........
D .. we might come over to see the kids today
Me .. Oh ok (and I'm thinking ohhh there goes my hope of having letfover butter chicken)
D .. So what are you doing for dinner ?
Me .. We're right for dinner thanks
D .. I'm not saying you have to make us dinner ... we could all go out for dinner
Me .. Ahh ok
D ... So why are you being a smart ass
Me .. I'm not being smart, just not telling you what I'm making for dinner (lauging)
D .. Ahh ok, so my scent is right on queue then
Me .. Yeh definately ........ so I told him about the butter chicken and umm now we have 2 extra dinner guests !!!!
Buggar lol !!!! He alwaaaayyyyssss knows when I'm doing something that he would absolutely love !
-
NOT FAIR, oh well another taste tester for us :)
My other 1/2 went to the neighbours as dh told thrm I was cooking something special for thrm >:(
-
And the verdict is .......................... Yummy !!! DS8 loved it, Ds6 and DS4 not as keen but they did eat it. My brother and sister in law looooooooovvvvved it and so did we. Here's the photos. DH did the chicken on the weber q to get a bit of the char effect and was great.
-
Yummm, looks great, cant wait to get the Tandori colouring :)
Next time I am making 3kg of chicken. The neighbours loved it too :)
-
We have leftovers Hally ! Probably enough for DH, DS8 and myself, other two can have something else. I had a pack of 1.6kg of chicken breast and used that. I'd agree though I'd use 3kg next time too ! It's not a lot more effort and would freeze really well for a quick meal another time ! The flavour is amazing ! I keep dipping a bit more bread in the sauce lol !
-
You woud never guess the toato soup :o
Lucky you left overs, yes I thought straight after making 3kgs :)
-
I was having a giggle at Debbie's conversation with her brother, and DS came to give me a cuddle and spotted the photo off the butter chicken and said Yumm! Guess what he wants me to cook :)
-
No you wouldn't know about the tomato soup Hally (I do actually like tomato soup, in case you thought I didn't, just not in spaghetti bolognaise lol).
ES it's definately worth making, but double it and freeze some, it's not hard to make, but takes time for the whole process, start the day before. Made it a bit easier today. I'd even make the sauce earlier next time and do the chicken at the last minute on the BBQ.
Ohhh and that conversation with my brother, is very typical of us ! We're very close, he drives me mad at times, but love him all the same. The kids adore him !
-
Great to see others are loving this recipe I'm so glad we made this one last week and definitely looking forward to making again and like others I'll make more and freeze. I think I will also make the sauce in the TMX as I whizzed it for a bit to make a smoother sauce last time. I'm thinking of making the sauce in the TMX, taking the whole spices out before puréing and then simmering in the stove top with the chicken in while cooking the naan etc.
-
Wonder after cooking the chicken in the tandor would you put a leg of lamb or beef on to make use of the charcoal?
:)
-
We haven't Hally but you certainly could. I'm thinking next time I might plan ahead and cook the chicken early for the next nights dinner and then cook a roast for the same night, although then the naan isn't going to be as good - ill have to think a bit more. Maybe the roast could be for the next night and just warm it up when cooking veggies? I feel as though I'm wasting the charcoal when it remains hot for so long but DH says I'm crazy and think too much!!
-
I would be wanting to get as much out of the charcoal as possible. Cook the chicken, then the naan, then put a roast on for the next night or for sandwiches, of course this woud have to be a weekend :)
-
Loving this ;D something to really look forward to Hally
Marie
-
Where did you get the charcoal, Hally? Just found out from another thread that we live quite close by. Garden City is 15 mins away from us.
-
I havent found any at a decent price yet >:(
-
Wonder, Hally not sure if you've seen this but there's a list of charcoal suppliers on Tandoori Living's website .....
http://www.tandoorliving.com.au/Charcoal-for-sale-buy-Australia.html
Not sure if these are the right type but ...... There's also this in WA
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kenwick/bbq/charcoal-for-bbq-and-grill/1011726833
And Vic

Thanks Debbie. I've always wanted to make satay like those from back home in Malaysia. At least charcoal is not stopping me....just the other fiddly bits :D
-
Thanks, will look into them :)
-
BZB you could come to our next coffee at Garden City.
-
That would fabulous, cookie :)
-
Thanks Debbie, we have bought from one on the Tandoor living site and it wasn't very good but our local charcoal chicken has reasonable quality for a good price so think we will go back there.
Hally if you have any charcoal chicken shops near by call in and ask them. I'm thinking next time we buy some I might even ask for some of the spice mix they use on their chickens.
-
Ok, thanks wonder, will do.
I figure it will be here wed or thurs.
Busy sat at a 40th, but sunday........
Plus i have ordered 10kgs of chicken & a whole lamb I pick up wednesday. 3kg if chicken will be used on sunday for butter chicken :)
-
I'm making the butter chicken tonight, it's marinating in the fridge, decided to only do half of the chicken for the two of us, and then there will be left overs by the look of the amount of chicken. So looking forward to this. Will make the nann bread dough this morning, need to buy some more flour.
-
Jeninwa, does your fridge smell like an Indian restaurant ? Enjoy, we haven't eaten the leftovers yet, we were out for dinner last night !
-
Jeninwa, does your fridge smell like an Indian restaurant ? Enjoy, we haven't eaten the leftovers yet, we were out for dinner last night !
It doesn't have it in my Tupperware marinater thingy, I'm wondering how hot it's going to be I realized I used the hot Chilli powder instead of my other one. Do u think the left overs will freeze ok?
-
I'm planning on freezing the leftovers today if we don't have them for dinner. I always freeze curry and it's fine, so yep I would say so.
-
It should be fine to freeze. I haven't frozen this particular butter chicken but have frozen plenty of others, just reheat slowly.
-
How did dinner go Jeninwa ? We made something else for the kids and reheated some butter chicken for us ! Still really good, sauce thickens quite a bit when it cools though ....... but definitely very yummy still !!
-
It was absolutely delicious just the right heat. I was worried about the chilli that I used but it was fine. Dh cooked the chicken on the bbq. Nann bread was great too used chookie's recipe and cooked in the oven on a pizza stone. Found a recipe for stuffed nann that I am keen to try.
Hally heard anything about when your oven will arrive?
-
Just had a quick look its on the road still.
I figure it will be here tomorrow or thursday :)

Have lots of fun cooking over the weekend. I don't want to look at the pictures of what you cook, It will just make me want one even more lol. I hope things have settled down for you, and you can enjoy your weekend.
We'll be at my parents to surprise them on their return from a UK / Europe 8 week trip. The kids are hanging out to see them, they don't know it's a long weekend here so will not expect us to be at their house on Sunday. The Cooly rock and roll festival is on down the coast so we'll take the kids to see that. Old cars, lots of people dressed up and Rock n Roll music (ohhh and must not forget the best gelato ever !).
-
Hally sounds like you are going to have a great time. I'll be interested to hear about the cookbook.

Wonder, have had a bit if a browse, the main thing I get from the book is its all about preparing the fod for the Tandor, they recommend marinating meat from 1-3 days.
Going to use a website recipe tomorrow until I am organised with marinades etc. just need to plan ahead :)
-
Can someone send me the butter chicken recipe your alltalking about???
-
Frozzie - try here . . I think it's the recipe from the website . .
http://www.tandoorliving.com.au/Tandoori-cuisine-recipe-indian-curry.html
The butter chicken recipe is here . . http://www.tandoorliving.com.au/Butter-chicken-recipe-curry-easy.html
-
Most recipes for lamb ask for Hung Yogurt, thought it must be greek yoghurt & yes it is.
:)
Tomorrow I am trying Tandori chicken recipe no.2 from website &
Ran Nawabi from the book
I wont be having enough marinating time but I am sure both will be really good :)
Will attempt Naan too.
:) :)
-
Thanks Hally - learned something there!! ;D
-
Hally did they give you the recipes for the naan? We found the one with no milk and only the smallest amount of yeast which you leave overnight to be very authentic.
-
It all sounds very exciting.
-
Yes wonder I have the naan recipe.
Sadly we have to postpone everything, its raining so we cant do the 4 hour burn & my dh mum has just been read her last rites by the priest, so looks like we are heading to Melbourne shortly.
-
OH how awful for you all, especially DH.
-
Yes wonder I have the naan recipe.

Sorry to hear about your MIL.
-
Hally,
Just catching up on this thread. So sorry to hear about your MIL. I hope things are on the improve for you very soon.
Just looked at the tandoori chicken ............ ohhhhhh yummmm. Off to the Indian shop again I go lol !! It looks very yummy ! What did you have with the tandoori chicken ?
This isn't exactly the weather for it now but I posted this recipe, which was a copy of a meal I loved in a coffee shop I used to frequent, I bet that tandoori chicken would be yum in this salad.
http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10982.0
-
Ohhh and forgot to say .......... we went to the Brisbane caravan and camping show today and they have these
http://www.ozpig.com.au/?q=products
My DH is desperate to get one because he saw someone else with one similar when we were camping and you can use them when there's fire ban's on ........ just reading their fb page and some have been using them like a tandoori oven ..... hmm interesting. I wouldn't let him buy one today (because we have a weber Q for camping) ........... might have to rethink that lol
-
That looks great Hally. If this is the one we have ade The favors are very authentic and the spice mix and yogurt sauce really add quite a bit of flavour.
-
Wonder it was recipe no.2 on the website.
First night with rice & veg, last night with salad, both ways yummy :)
-
Wonder,
Have you tried the chicken tikka masala ? I have all the ingredients for that so am thinking of giving that one a go this week.
-
I have just looked at the ozpig web site. DH is making something similar, although on slightly smaller lines to take away with us. I will have to show him this. Ours won't be on legs though so we will have to bend over to use it.
-
Debbiebillg, i haven't tried the tikka yet but the recipe looks good.
-
Very clever DH Cookie. They're not all that big though, small enough to take camping and they pack up into a bag.
Wonder, yes that recipe looks really good too (well they all look good) ......... love this kind of food ! Will probably make it over the weekend I'd say. I'll post some photos when I do.
-
Well I made the chicken tikka masala tonight (see photos). Was very nice but quite thick. The recipe says to chop the onions very fine / puree them. I would advise to puree them. I chopped them finely, browned them in the pan and then proceeded with cooking the sauce. When I tasted the sauce when it was almost finished, I could taste tiny bits of kind of crunchy onion so I cooked the sauce longer until the onions dissolved, which of course made the sauce white thick ! I added a bit more cream but didn't want to dilute it too much ! We cooked the chicken on the weber q again !
But we still enjoyed it, and my DH actually preferred it to the butter chicken. Here's the funny thing ........ I always get heartburn with curry (have a minor reflux problem only when I eat spicy food), but I didn't get it with this or with the butter chicken. I find that interesting, maybe it's a certain spice that causes it that's not in these two curries.
We had it with the frozen roti bread we get from the Indian shop. It's frozen raw and you dry fry it in a frying pan and it puffs up. It's really yummy and didn't have time to make bread as well tonight because DH is on night shift so we had to eat early.
So worth a try ! Leftovers for dinner tomorrow !
-
I'm going to make this for our tuesday family night. Have all the ingredient,
-
We are hoping to set the tandor this weekend & cook on it.
Sadly the initial excitement has gone with everything that has happened & sill happening.
Looking forward to try it :)
Debbiebillg, which tike recie did you use?
:)
-
We are hoping to use our Tandoor a couple of times next week. The kids both want pizza and we are also wanting a curry night. I'm working but if I make most of it the day before DH can light the Tandoor and we will just cook on the night.
-
Wonder you are so lucky having a DH who helps you with the cooking, I know outside cooking is generally done by blokes but this isn't always the case. We went to a friend's place for a BBQ once and she went outside and cooked all the meat whilst he stayed inside chatting to us :o :D
-
Judy it is great that he can cook but it's not by choice. DH has been our stay at home parent for a long time and works part time from home while I work very long hours and over the years have had to do lots of travel. I would much prefer to be the one at home cooking and doing a lot more with the kids, but as you are aware you just don't always get what you want so we make the most of what we get.
-
Wonder My DH cooks, cleans, does the garden, He would be so good at a stay at home Dad.
:)
We did think about it 10 years ago..
-
DH hubyy is firing it up for the 4 hour burn & I am marintatin tandoori chicken :P
-
The fire has been lit
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/29/jetana9u.jpg)
-
You all seem to be getting a lot of use out of your ovens. :D
-
Wonder, dh read you cant make Naan until the oven has been going for 6 hours, does that mean 6 hours in total or 6 hours each time you light it?
Mich, very excited & so easy to light ;D
-
Thanks for the photo and comments, Hally - almost like being there!! ;D ;D
-
Just took out of the frezsr a leg of lamb to cook Ran Nawabi while we are eating the tandoori chicken, 2.5kgs of chicken, going to have to freeze some, nice for sandwiches for lunch too :P
-
Hally that's just the first burn, after that its just however long it's takes to get to temperature.
-
This all looks very exciting!
-
3hours of burning

Hally I'm so glad you are impressed, I was quite worried that you wouldn't be as happy as we are. I've looked at that lamb recipe often but never cooked it. You are so correct in saying the flavour is at another level. Isn't the naan just the best?
-
Yes the naan & a minute to cook it :)
What is your list that you have cooked?
Hope to use again next weekend :)
-
Wow Hally, thats amazing
-
Fantastic Hally.Beautiful food 8)
-
Thanks Bedlam & CC :)
We wasted a lot of charcoal, so next time we need to look at cooking more. I had nothing else defrosted otherwise I would have put some more meat on. It wasuch awaste to see the charcol with no food >:(
Absoltely love it.
Cookie & Jen now I sort of know what were doing, we can organise a day at the begining of next term, sorry we are away for holidays (back to Melbourne).
Looking forward to it :)
-
Hally that food looks amazing, so pleased you are happy with your tandoori oven.
Would love to come and play but I'm only free between 10 and 2. You might have to play with out me.
I can't ask for any time off next term as I am having the last week of term off for our holiday.
-
It all looks delicious Hally :D
-
It looks and sounds as if you are doing so well with the tandoor Hally, it sure produces a lot of food.
-

Yum that food looks divine :)

Count me in Hally.
That food looks delicious. I can almost smell it. ( perhaps that is our dinner!)
-
Well done Hally. Your food looks mouthwatering and you sound like you are having fun too.
-
We are hoping to set the tandor this weekend & cook on it.
Sadly the initial excitement has gone with everything that has happened & sill happening.
Looking forward to try it :)
Debbiebillg, which tike recie did you use?
:)
Hally, sorry we have been away camping with the kids for a week so just read this now. It was the one on the Tandoori Living Website. This one:
http://www.tandoorliving.com.au/Chicken-tikka-masala-recipe.html
-
Thx, will add it to my list.
This weekend we are cooking
Butter chicken,
Naan
Greek Leg of Lamb
Roast Pork
Whole chicken
Yummm, cant wait
-
Just had a look thru all you've been cooking in your Tandoor, Hally and it looks soooooooo yummy ! Your weekend menu sounds delicious ! I'm going to make the butter chicken in the next couple of days.
-
Thank you, yes cant wait to cook in it again.
What did you prefer the tika or butter chicken?
Maybe I should try the tika this time.
:)
-
Hally,
All sounds great. You certainly go through a lot more food than we do!
So far we've cooked
- butter chicken
- Maggie Beer slow roasted lamb shoulder
- Greek marinated shoulder and leg of lamb a couple of times
- whole chicken
- lots of pizza
- naan, based on Tandoori living and local Indian restaurant recipes
- butter chicken from a couple of different recipes - Tandoori living recipe most loved by all and will stick with that one from now on
- Tandoori Chicken #2 - loved by all. We find the Tandoori Khatta Masala from that recipe really does add a lot of flavour and also use it mixed through yogurt with cucumber added when we have other curries
- Tandoori mushrooms - using chicken marinade
- Lamb cutlets using chicken marinade
- chicken chops in greek marinade
There are still so many things I'm wanting to try but just short on time.
-
Wonder, lol
We probably dont!! But last time the charcoal burnt for hours & hours & we felt it was wasted. Charcoal isnt that cheap here.
So we are doing a cook up.
Pork for dinner Sat night
Chicken pieces will go in the freezer in batches.
Lamb or chicken sunday & monday.
Left overs for lunches
Your list looks great :)
-
I'm a bit the same with the charcoal Hally, DH thinks I'm crazy.
-
Thank you, yes cant wait to cook in it again.
What did you prefer the tika or butter chicken?
Maybe I should try the tika this time.
:)
I prefer the butter chicken but kids and DH preferred the Tika, (but it was quite thick because of the onion not being chopped fine enough) . I need to cook them both again to be sure lol
-
I'm a bit the same with the charcoal Hally, DH thinks I'm crazy.
DH is with me too as the only charcoal he coud buy was in 2.5kg bags, he is trying to get a 10kg bag today.
Its such a waste to see the carcoal burn.
Chicken pizza last night, cooked in the oven but the tandoori chicken was great. Still have pieces in the freezer :)
:)
-
Hally, Wonder,
I've just come back from our local Indian Store (quite a big store) and they were selling I think it was 5kg bags of long burning charcoal for $12.50. Not sure if that's cheap or not but you might be able to get larger quantities ordered in for you. I didn't really expect to see it there, but thought of you both.
Also, on the Aussie BBQ forum Hally, they're arranging a bulk buy of charcoal, might be worth getting in on that. Here's a link to the thread.

-
I can just see Hally having a tonne of charcoal delivered to her driveway :D :D She would use it all too ;)
-
LOL Judy. Good idea to get together with others and do a bulk order though lol.
-
We have a few suppliers around us but still looking for the "perfect" one closer to home. Hally it's worth asking at any charcoal chicken places around your area, we have two in our area and one was more than happy to sell us a 20kg bag for $25. The Tandoor Living guy had a look and said it was good quality and there were a lot of large pieces but also quite a bit of smaller stuff.
-
Dh bought 5kgs for $16!!!
Here is the butter chicken, just need to make the sauce. We both had a piece & could have quite happily scoffed a lot:) lamb in now.
-
You are certainly getting lots of use out that oven Hally. All the food looks so scrumptious too ;D
-
The pork & the lamb, chcken on now & then the naan;)
Pork was a little over one on the outside, tandor a bit too hot. lamb perfect again.

You are certainly getting lots of use out that oven Hally. All the food looks so scrumptious too ;D
Yes mich :)
Its nice to know we have such good meat cooked & ready to go for the week. Only salad or veg to cook, plus I need to make the sauce for the butter chicke, but might keep a litte chicken aside for sandwiches, its delicious :)
Just chopped up the roast chicken, delicious, really tasty & really moist :)

Ohh yum Hally, do you have a spare room ? You surely need another person to help you eat all that food ? ;D
-

Welcome back Hally. The food all looks and sounds lovely, we are going to slow roast a shoulder lamb in ours this week to use for souvlaki, I might also put in some potatoes. How did you do your potatoes?

Nice to see you back posting Hally ;D
-
Thank you everyone.
Not really back, just posted as we love The Tandor, really busy, 15 more sleeps until our trip :)
H :)
Wonder, potatoes wrapped in foil & cooked for 1 3/4 hours, lovely flavour, just in a foil tray with meat.
-
ok So what size do i buy this week. :)
-
My brother bought one of these a few weeks ago and he is very happy with it. :)
-
ok So what size do i buy this week. :)
We have the SS2 deluxe, great for us, you can cook heaps.
-
Thanks Hally
-
Obbie, definitely go the SS2, i saw the smaller one and it for the little extra it is much better. I think the smaller one is intended for use in small areas such as balconys. We don't use ours as much as Hally but we love it.
-
We love it, used it twice this week :)
-
Naan on the wall, this was the first on, we have about 4 going at once.
-
We froze some batches of Naan & defrosted & heated very briefly in oven. Not quite as good as direct from the tandor, but better than any take away or other naan we have had. Still very very good :)
HHW :)
-
We are so tempted by one of these. I love the idea of a tandoor.
-
Have you ordered one Obbie?
-
I'm hoping we can have an Indian cook up on Sunday but DH and I are both working so might need to wait again. Hally thanks for the testing freezing the naan, we've often wondered how it would turn out but always end up eating all that we make on the night. reheating in the varoma might work well.
-
Going to get it once we come back from our little Holiday at palm cove.
so another week, then will order.
-
Wonder woukdnt the steam make it soggy?
Woohoo Obbie :)
-
Hally we actually like the bread soft rather than crispy so think this way would work well for us - just hadn't thought of it before.
-
Let me know how you go.
H :)
-
Obbie, are you buying an oven?
Hoping to crank ours up this weekend if its not too hot :)
-
yeah, I still want it.
hopefully soon.
-
Fantastic pizzas last night, made naan for the freezer & pork.
-
That looks amazing!!
-
Thanks, Jo it tasted amazing :) love my tandor :)
-
On Jamies &Jimmys show last night, Jimmy made a home made tandor. It looked good, but didnt hold much. It would be worth a go as it woukd be a cheap way to test one out.
Anyone see it?
:)
