Title: Steamed Cup Cakes
Post by: RosieB on January 15, 2013, 07:54:37 am
Hi,
Lately I keep finding recipes for steamed cup cakes.  Like this one.
http://www.larecetadelafelicidad.com/en/2012/10/steam-cupcakes-apam-dot-dot.html (http://www.larecetadelafelicidad.com/en/2012/10/steam-cupcakes-apam-dot-dot.html)
and this one
http://www.anncoojournal.com/2012/11/steamed-orange-cupcakes.html (http://www.anncoojournal.com/2012/11/steamed-orange-cupcakes.html)
or  http://mimibakeryhouse.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/ladybugs-attack-steamed-strawberry.html (http://mimibakeryhouse.blogspot.com.au/2012/09/ladybugs-attack-steamed-strawberry.html)

They look fantastic as the steaming retains the colour,  But I'm not sure what the texture would be like.

Hoping someone has tried this already.
Or will I try it and report back  :)

They are gorgeous Rosie and no need for icing either so much more healthy.  Puddings steam OK so why not?

Wow Jamberie,  They are cute as.  What a tea party they would make.
Tho for DH and DGS I think I will stay with paper ones.  ;)

Please let us know if you make them.

Those little cups are so cute and being silicone, they should be hard wearing.

oh I adore the lady bugs!!!  8)
Looked at the recipe, and hadn't heard of "ovalette" or had a clue what it was.....here's an explanation

Suggested replacement was condensed milk.  These are a must do I think  :)

When you have steamed cakes in Singapore they are lovely. Quite light. I think I may need to try these too

So I thought I would give the steamed ladybugs a whirl today.
Getting the batter in was easy, just used a squeezy bottle

but then the problem I thought I would encounter, did happen.  The condensation from the varoma lid, did drop all over the batter, so it really ruins the appearance, and makes the colours bleed

And on top of that, the cupcake recipe from that blog really isn't very good....result was rubber balls, and didn't taste nice.

I think I will try again another day, but with a good recipe & bake them instead.....Who could resist a ladybug?  :)

Maddy, I have just seen a great tip to stop the condensation dripping back on to the food. Place a length of paper towel across the varoma before putting lid on to steam. It was from Alyce Alexandra's cheesecake video on Super kitchen machine website ( sorry, I don't know how to link!) I got it as an email and can forward it on to you if you would like.  ;D

Thanks Kt2 & goldfish....that solution is so simple, but effective.
it would have worked for the bugs I'm sure....oh well, the cakes still weren't fabulous tasting, but will remember this for next time  ;)

:D Thanks AB, and yes, I will try again as it will literally bug me if I can't get it right  :P

Love the cute ladybirds maddy, and look forward to seeing the next result.

Some people like those to steam little cakes in those silicon tea cup and saucers, and I saw them the other day in Red Dot for $5 ea
