Title: http://www.eatyourbooks.com
Post by: Jude59 on January 01, 2013, 05:16:34 am
Sorry if this has already been introduced but just joined this website this morning.  Have added all my cookbooks and magazines and it is great.  American site but most of our Australian mags are indexed and definitely most of the cookbooks we have.  Great for searching for recipes in books and mags you already own.  Check it out.

I started with the free and very quickly saw the benefit of paying $2.50/ month US. I have digital mags and books as well as paper and I have often thought that I don't use them as much as I could.  This is brilliant.  I'm very impressed.

Good to hear. I have looked at this many, many times and often wondered if there was value in a paid subscription. Thanks for the feedback

Quote.  Eat Your Books is an electronic bookmarking service where you can create your own virtual bookshelf, add all your titles to it and never miss a recipe again. Once set up – and this only takes minutes, simply enter whatever recipe your looking for and the database will give you a list of all the recipes that match the search criteria contained in all of your cookbooks and mags! More titles are being indexed everyday, including my first e-cookbook My Whole Food Philosophy. You can also view my bookshelf here.

The service is quite affordable for serious recipe lovers, starting with no fee for upto 5 cookbooks and unlimited titles at $2.50 a month or $25 a year.

Many blogs are also listed and there is also an option to add your personal recipes or bookmark recipes found online, so you can search them too once added to your shelf. How great is that?!!!

Start with the free option do you can look around and see if it is something you could find useful.

This does sound impressive. I tend to sit down to look for a recipe, get very frustrated when I can't find it, then the next stage is I am finding all these recipes I haven't tried. Not sure if I would buy it though, but I will certainly check it out.

I have added 5 books which is what you are allowed free.

So far very pleased, have searched via ingredients,  put in 3 & a seection of recipes came up.  I am going to play more. :)

This seems to be a great way of really using your  books rather than spending hours looking through.

H :)

Loving it, i think I will pay the us$25 for the annual membership :)

Ok ok ok, paid up for the year :) now getting confused which aww books I have :)

Have been playing, love that you can search ingredients, ie pork, cream, onions or whatever & every recipe that has these ingredients in comes up.

This is just brilliant :)

I just typed curry & 95 recipes came up from my books listed. Then of course if I wanted chicken curry it would  only show those, absolutely brilliant :)

It really is going to make me use all my books & magazies so much more. Cant wait to add them all when I get back to Perth :)

The mags I flick through but seldom use, now I will :)

I have added QFITT, have requested FFS to be indexed, when enough requests come they index it for you.

You can also index yourself, havent worked that out yet :). Will do when I am home with books in front if me :)

I paid the one off annual fee as I dont like ongoing payment plans. You can remove books but dont know if they count or not.

I am loving this site, worked out my menu plan without any of my recipe books, i think I have added abut 35 books so far :)

Yes Jude found you :)

Wow! I've just subscribed to the free version and loaded up my 5 free books and I can already see that the yearly price (approximately the price of a cookbook) seems very reasonable cconsidering that it may enable me to get more use out of the books I already own. I also appreciate the reviews of recipes by others...thanks for sharing!

Jude, love this.  well worth the money.  Only problem is that i have a lot of books by Australians.  Many of these are not listed. the only ones listed are those with very good publicity people behind them , like stephanie , maggie and Neil Perry.   Still good value. The Dish magazine,  that  I love is there and would be worth it just for that.Alyce Quick fix is also under Thermomix.

I have got years and years of Dish magazine.  one of my absolute favourites and another NZ one called Cuisine.  Thankfully most of them are digital now as well ... so much easier to find and keep tidy :)   most of my books and mags are up now.... 87 cookbooks - haven't counted the magazines yet.

Love this website, saves so much time when you can't remember where you saw a recipe. I like the idea that you can link to some online blogs (e.g. Smitten kitchen) as well as magazines. I get gourmet traveller and can never find the recipe I'm looking for.

I agree that some books aren't indexed yet. I've done a few for them - good fun but quite time consuming as they are (rightly) very exacting with indexing requirements.
Title: Re: http://www.eatyourbooks.com
Post by: CreamPuff63 on January 03, 2013, 01:11:34 pm
I've accessed the site and downloaded 5 books. I'm still deciding how this can benefit me cos usually I know from what book I can access a fave recipe from. Would this be of more benefit to me if say I had an excess if eggplants and wanted a recipe to use them up?

I gather its not going to be that useful if I have my iPad with me at the shop and need to know quantities, its all got to be worked out prior.

Like cookie I do buy Australian more so and haven't gone further to see what books are and aren't available. Bit disappointed that aust woman's weekly is not there and seems to be more US and then UK based. I suppose its not recognised yet that these convicts can cook, and herein lies the annoyance that more aust mags aren't listed  :D

I'm still sitting on the fence and I would really like to hear your opinions from those who think its a great thing and those who think its not worth it. $25 is not much to outlay, but it is if you are never going to use it.

I would be a millionaire if everyone who went on my website paid me a small fee before they were convinced it was a good or a bad thing

I have also downloaded  my 5 books and will see how it goes.  I am like you CP so far I can remember what book the recipe is in. That will probably change though.  :D  As for my magazines I have stapled little notes on the front cover indicating what recipes I use.  Will be interested to hear other opinions also

CP and Emme,  seems to me at this stage, that it depends on how many books and magazines you have, how much cooking you do, and how often you make a particular dish or like to try new things.  Also a lot of my Australian recipe book are not in their library.  I have put 77 on so far and there are probably 150 more that it will accept.
I haven't used it yet to find a recipe,  but the programme is very well set up and easy to use.  I think you are wise to wait for more feed back.

I love this site, so far works well for me.

I chose to pay the annual membership as in the past trying to cancel monthly orders has been a nightmare..

Yes some of my books are not listed & not even on. Good Food magazine & Masterchef magazine dont seem to be on either.

I spend  hours tagging pages in book, but can never remember which book etc

Benefits
Menu planning without my books
Finally will get to cook from books & magazines, especially magazies that I havent used. The value is there for me just in that.
Typing in an ingredient & several reciepes come up, great last night.
A big time saver

Negatives
Not all books & magazines listed

Action,
am in process of listing all my books & mags
Will put all mags in date order
Sort out recipe books into authors & into listed on here & not listed on here.

I put the free 5 books up initially & soon realised I needed to add more.

 :)

Cream Puff, just typed in Eggplants & 110 recipes came up, you would then refine  by adding more ingredients :)

I have put on over 100 now,  but have found that 33 are not indexed. i have requested that they be indexed but believe it depends upon how many people request a particular book.  Still need to test if it is going to work.

Cookie,  this may help.  I have now indexed all my books.  307   Only 100 have been indexed by the site,  that means that I have requested 2/3 of my library to be considered for indexation.  I have now about 100 that are not in the site library.  I have physically organised then in alphabetical order by author.  This has taken 3 days.
I tested the search ability by asking for recipes for prawn shells and was more than satisfied with what it came up with.
For me it is well worth the money,  as I am not using my books enough.
I still have to do the magazines.

Cookie, I joined up the last day we were in busselton. So far have done 3 recipes from my cook books that I wouldnt nrmally do.

I have seen quite a few magazine recipes come up too that I would  never do. The reason because I cany physically go through every mag :)

I entered baby eggplany as I was given 6. Tuesday a new dish from a slow cooker book using pork & baby eggplant.

I just love it & dh sees the value too.

When We have coffee I can show you :)

I still have lots to add, more time this week with eb gone.

I think I need to look at this abit more cos at the moment I still can't see what the excitement is about  ??? I must admit that the largest majority of my books and magazines are Australian, and that I am narrowing the field down the last year or so by limiting to TM and ebooks unless absolutely necessary. I use it every day , also.  Even though only 100 of my books are indexed,  it still comes up with dozens of dishes.  It is directing me to books that I have never used.  Blush, blush..  I sometimes don't go to the recipes,  but look at the combination of ingredients.  Thankyou Jude for pointing this programmer out.

Not all my books are indexed but I've indexed a few myself for EYB which is useful. I certainly get my money's worth out of this site.

I haven't tried to index any yet but certainly willing to give it a go... Added another 10 treasures tonight that were found hiding on an inconspicuous shelf ;D

I also joined when we were talking about it the other day.. Just free for the moment as wanted to see what it was like...

So do you need to rearrange your bookshelves in alphabetical order by category?? Ie sweet, savoury, drinks, aperitif/party food.. Obviously my french books wont be on there :(  i spent forever today looking for a cookbook I couldnt find lol..

I haven't had a look at this site yet, but will do so as soon as I can.  Can you search by cuisine / category, i.e. vegetarian?  What happens if you decide to unsubscribe - does your account stop dead then but you can continue to refer to what you have got listed at that point or do you lose everything you have loaded into the program? (it's possible no one has an answer to that question as it doesn't sound as if anyone has unsubscribed as yet).

Marina,  what sensible questions you ask.  Haven't thought of unsubscribing.  I just keep adding books.   :-))

Not sure what happens if you unsubscribe Marina.

Frozzie - you don't have to arrange your books in any order - just select them from the list of books they have on the site to put them on your "bookshelf". You can then search by recipe name, ingredient, course, ethnicity, vegetarian etc and it will come up with a list of recipes and the books they are in. You can also add magazines and some food blogs to your bookshelf as well

I have had a chance to have a quick look round (about 1 – 2 minutes only, so very superficial).  Do you have access to ALL the books listed in the library, or is access only available to your personal books?

You have access to all the books in as much as you can see them (titles). When you add a cookbook to your personal bookshelf you will be able to search for recipes - it lists the name of the recipe and main ingredients, not the actual recipe - you get that from the cookbook on your kitchen shelf.

Prior to using, EYB, I had all my books in categories,  such as Bread, Asian etc.   now I have them in alphabetical order.   Something about my mind set prefers them in category.   Also I have over a 100 books that are not in the EYB general library .  This is because they are old, very Australian ,( Tasmanian Table ), or a collection of recipes,  not by a single author.  Proactive authors have indexed their books.( Karen Martini, Alyce Alexander)  If you have a book that is not indexed,  you can request that EYB index it.  When they have enough people asking ,  they index it. You can also offer to index a book that you have.  You are given a certain amount of time to do this.
Friends often ring me for a recipe,  if I don't have one at hand,  I use EYB and can quickly find a recipe,  in my collection that will suit.
It took me a full day to catalogue over 300 books and put them in order.  Not too bad for the convenience.
Hope this helps.

Where can I find a full day?

Thanks for your input everyone.

So far I only have the free bit but I do receive their emails. I intend to join as I know it would make me use my cookbooks more. I have heaps of books and literally tons of magazines to do.
