Meatless Balls
Converted from Revive Cafe Cookbook - a cafe in Auckland
Make approx 72 small balls
INGREDIENTS
2 large potatoes, cooked and mashed
70g carrot
4 cloves of garlic
1 large onion
2tsp rice bran oil
180g of rolled oats
1tsp dry mixed herbs
125mls soy sauce/tamari
1/2 cup besan flour or wholemeal flour
Soy/rice milk as needed (approx 60mls)
4 cups of your favourite Italian tomato sauce
Spaghetti to serve
METHOD
1. Chop carrot Speed 5 for 4 seconds - set aside
2. Place garlic in *: speed 6 for 5 seconds
3. Add onion to *: speed 6 for 5 seconds
4. Add all other ingredients except milk, tomato sauce and spaghetti
5. Bring the ingredients together speed 6 for 10-12 seconds.
6. Check mixture and add milk accordingly - it is a moist mix.
7. Using a scoop (as it is a loose, wet texture I don't know how you would form the balls without a scoop) form balls and place on a tray lined with baking paper and lithly sprayed with oil.
8. Place in 160 oven for 40 minutes or until cooked through.
9. Cover the balls with tomato sauce and serve on rice or spaghetti.

It sounds an interesting recipe Michele, are you turning vegetarian?
-
I was raised vegetarian and DH and I have at least 3 vegie meals a week. This recipe is vegan too but I'm not vegan.
-
Thanks Michelle ... We try to have a couple of vegetarian meals a week here too (good for the food balance I say) Think I will be able to sneak this one past the family with out too many dramas (perhaps when it cools down a little!!)
-
Looks interesting, Michelle. Did the balls hold together after they were cooked? How did they taste?
-
No problem, firmed up and held together really well. Tasted pretty good. I ate 4 without the sauce :D
-
I ate 4 without the sauce :D
must have been good!!! :D :D :D :D :D
-
Must try this one for DS. Sounds yummy :)
-
I love the sound of these Michele. We try to have at least one meal a week that isn't meat of some sort.
-
This looks great Michele and a must try meal as DH and I have 3 vegetarian dinners each week.
We both did the whole vegetarian thing for 3 years a while back but missed our meat , poultry and fish.
It's now a good balance although we have over indulged in the last couple of weeks. ;)
-
How do you think these would be with sweet potato instead, maybe reduce the liquid, what do you think?
-
Sounds easy recipe, thanks for converting, I am going to check out that recipe book, but its to hot here in Albany WA to try recipe yet :)
-

Sweet potato would work fine (it's lower GI than regular potato too). Next time because we eat eggs I will add an egg and reduce the liquid.
-
I made these yesterday and my DH wondered if we added an egg (or two) to bind them, and perhaps some breadcrumbs, could they then be boiled, instead of going into the oven? What do you think?
-
Could you steam them in the varoma Marina :-\
-
Steaming in the varoma sounds like a good idea. Maybe I will try microwaving next time.
would you boil in the basket of the TMX Cuilidh?
-
I hadn't thought of either of those options, CC and Michelle (I'm not a great lateral thinker, that's why many of my questions are a bit inane). The varoma may be the way to go. It will be interesting to see how they taste cooked that way. It's drawing towards the end of my holidays now so it may be a while before I try that experiment, though, but thanks for the inspiration ladies.
-
Mich, I made these tonight and I ruined them :'( I'm sure they would have tasted lovely if I hadn't accidently emptied half the pepper into the mixture! I will be trying them again though, because I never let a recipe beat me ;D
-
Question time.... could the leftovers be frozen? :)
-
I have frozen these, Amy, but I felt they were maybe just a wee bit tough when I tossed them into my sauce after thawing out. The texture wasn't off-putting, though, and they tasted fine.
-
will try this for DD, i am thinking of frying them 1st :-)) then adding them in a nap sauce for about 1 hour
I will add a few W/O frying, to see how they go
-
Good luck Uni ;)
Thanks Marina :)
-
Its wonderful to read other people's ideas. Thanks Michele for converting the recipe. I've bought the books but I'm not good at converting. I think I'll try steaming in the Varoma. Will let you know how it goes.

Uni, this is a very moist/loose mixture. I had to use a mini scoop to shape them. But if you put them straight from scoop to pan it would probably work.
Amy I have frozen them and ate them as is defrosted with no sauce they tasted fine.
-
Thanks Mich :-*
I put some in mum and SD's sandwiches today :D I sliced them thinly and piled tomato, cucumber, spinach, beetroot and mayonnaise on top :D

They look good Uni :D
-
That sounds yum Amy. They look good Uni.
-
i think DD#2 is coming for dinner tonight, i am sure she will love these
i forgot to mention that they are very salty if eating them just fried . i have not add any salt to the sauce
-
How did DD like them Uni?
-
she did love them Mich.
1/2 of the mix is in the freezer, i want to try and make sausage roll with it
-
They look great Uni, I hope you do try the sausage roll because I'd like to know how it turns out ;D
-
That sounds like a good idea Uni.
-
Going to try these soon.
Anyone done a lasagna?
Lasagna is one of cps fav meals :)
-
uni did you try this as sausage roll mix and hally as lasagna??
ive added to my veg list for meatless meals :)
-
no i havent kim
-
Kim, I haven't tried this as a sausage roll filling but have used Cyndi O'Meara's Carrot, mushroom loaf as a sausage roll filling.
Halved the recipe as it makes a large quantity and only used two eggs so the mixture wasn't as runny and easier to handle.
-
Thanks mich :)
