Title: Kids Favourites
Post by: I Love Bimby! on June 11, 2009, 11:25:05 am
Hi Guys,

Now that DD has hit the three's she is asserting her independence  >:( and is complaining about most meals I dish up  >:( >:( - regardless of her loving them previously  ??? .  So I'm left rather uninsprired for some kid-safe meals.

So I'm calling on all you Mums and Dads (and grandparent too) out there for some help.y P_P_P_Pretty Please could you please let me know what meals are a huge hit with your kids?

Many thanks in advance!!  ;D ;D

I think Brazens kids are actually off another planet  ;)

Mine hate anything (2 and 4) that I make in that machine except for Sorbet and muffins!!!

OK, maybe I can get them to eat lasagne or steamed rice, thats about it!! LOL

I hope in all hope that one day I wil be able to cook a meal for our family of 4 in the TM that every one will eat!!!

ILB, my grand-daughter is 4 and what she likes to eat changes from week to week.  Some of her favourites are (at the moment)

Tuna and corn mornay
cottage pie
spaghetti bolognaise
roast chicken & gravy
chicken snitzel
honey/soy chicken wings (chicken bones she calls them)
chicken nuggets
risotto
potato fritters
chicken, lettuce, cheese & avocado wraps
mexican food as long as it isn't too spicy eg tacos and nachos
chicken soup

We find she won't eat something this week but next week she will but I'm sure you have this problem too.  Hope you get some ideas from other parents.

I agree!!! ;D ;D ;D
How healthy are your lot Brazen?

Mine eat all pasta, they love lasagne and cannelloni made with brandy and bechamel best, they love pizza, the meatballs, have a new recipe for meatballs with rice inside meatballs (will try and post soon) your chicken winglets, salt baked pork, oh and the steamed rolled chicken breasts, plus spanish omelete and paella, my lot go in phases too, however I do find the more the merrier and easier! Dig in quick or go hungry! My poor little sod eats everything! Quick before his big sisters demolish everything first!

The foods Bron describes are pretty much what my 5 y.o.  DD eat, too.  She'll also eat casseroles, loves sausages and toad in the hole, I've got her well sold on sakuma wikki with ugali, because she gets to use her fingers and play with the ugali as if it's playdough (getting around to posting the recipes for these.  Made it in the TMX for the first time last week, and forgot to take note of what I did.  Probably making it again tomorrow, so will try to do better this time!).

She likes roasts, steamed fish with rice and any vegetable which is sweet.  chicken nuggets.  Omlets.  Scrambled egg.  Run out of ideas now - sorry.

We have a rule, which is that she will try everything, but doesn't have to eat it if she doesn't like it.  She has to re-try things on a regular basis, in case she's 'grown up enough' to like it this time.  I never make it negative, I always say something like, "Never mind.  That's fine if you're too young to like it this time.  Don't worry, you'll like it when you're a bit bigger."  Then next time I make it (assuming that at least a few weeks have passed) "Just try this again and see if you're big enough to like it yet.  You never know - you're getting to be quite a big girl now"  Obviously, it pre-disposes her to WANT to like things, so it's only the stuff she genuinely doesn't like that she rejects.  But she looks forward to the day when she will like it.  Who knows, maybe it'll work for your child too...

Lovely psychology CarolineW  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*  Especially if there is more than one child and the younger one eats it first !!  Peer pressure - love it!

Great idea CarolineW - can see that working. What child doesn't want to 'be bigger' and more 'grown-up'.  Must pass that one onto DD although she doesn't have a lot of problems compared to some parents - going back 40 years, my girls ate anything which was lucky for them because I don't think I would have been able to handle feeding fussy kids.

Thanks everyone for their ideas and suggestions!

CarolineW that is a great idea! will use that one tonight.

I have no trouble getting her to eat fruit and vegies (she's currently loving brussell sprouts!! - took me to be an adult before I'd eat them).  So I'm VERY lucky there!!  Just the other bit I have trouble with or if it's something like risotto, pizza, lasagna... she's pretty fussy about meat too.

My kids lived on a very limited repertoire of dishes that varied depending of food fads.
The favourites that all loved - and still do, are
lasagne
spag bog (I cook mine for a minimum of 3 hours and they can spot a quicker cooked one!)
spanakopitas (or any kind of spinach, cheese, pastry combination)
quiche
zucchini slice - the old Womens Weekly recipe with lots of eggs, cheese etc. I always grated up and hid other veggies in it, too.
Roast lamb with gravy
chicken schnitzel
eggs
soups - any kind of veggie soup, so long as it was pureed
fried rice - again, it can hide a lot of veggies!
chicken nuggets - I feel deeply ashamed that I ever fed these to them! :-[

I always found that the addition of cheese made just about anything more palatable to them!

Get a Labrador to eat the scraps. - No bad advice actually - they are prone to lots of problems when fed heaps of scraps ( good for business  ;)  The Warby Street vets would love you  ;) )

Seriously, having not had kids of my own - only adult step-children, is it flavour, texture, colour ??  Has anyone done research?

I love your idea also Caroline.  Another one to keep up my sleeve!

I know this is going to sound hugely old-fashioned but I find one of the best ways to get my children eating well at meal-times is to ensure that they have heaps of fresh air and exercise throughout the day to build up a big appetite.  We have recently moved to the country and my boys are spending all day outside chasing chooks and digging holes and now have an enormous appetite.  Even today when it was raining they were out in their gumboots and coats attempting to climb an apple tree (very cute).  They have gone from being a little fussy, to not caring a great deal about what is served, just as long as there is plenty of it.  Also, when they are a bit fussy or not overly enthused it is often because I have overdone the snacks in between meals or they have had a big drink too close to dinner- time.

Just something else to ponder . . . . . :)
