Hi All
I've had my TM for a year and a bit and I'm noticing a TERRIBLE noise when I'm using it on high speed for certain things like nuts (making nut paste) and an ice frappe drink I made yesterday and coconut ice cream (also made with ice cubes). I've made nut paste twenty times and never noticed this, but the other day I made a half quantity so wondering if that could be it. Same with the drink and ice cream - I only made small amounts.
But it's not the ice/ hard things, as it's fine for my morning juice in which I put 5 ice cubes with lots of fruit and veg + bit of water.
It is the most horrible grating sound a bit like a gardener pruning hedges or something. It actually makes you cringe. Not like the usual very loud sound of nuts chopping which is fine, but this is a really grating sound.
Has anyone else experienced this? I think I should start recording it.

I think I know what you mean sals77. My machine makes a very similar noise, but I don't use the really high speeds very often so I haven't had it checked out. Sorry, I know that probably doesn't help :-))
Maybe someone else will be able to be of more use! ;D

Record it then phone HO and let the techie listen.

great idea. thanks. right, off to get nuts to make nut butter again - just as well we eat a lot of it!

So head office sent me new blades but it's still making the worrying sound.
I am wondering if anyone else hears this sound when making things like nut butters, crushing ice etc
I've got a movie file I am trying to attach here but I'm not sure how to do it. Anyone know?

Sorry, I am pretty useless on the computer.

You could upload to youtube and then post the link :D

Hi there
I have uploaded to Youtube. http://youtu.be/pqJ8aVWf87o
This sound is after 40 seconds of the usual loud nut grinding sound (unfort I had to stop half way through as bubs needed me).
I've tested it out some more today and it did NOT do it with 250G of straight ice, but it DID do the same noise with 250G of frozen banana + coconut ice blocks + pecans (was making icecream). Is generally doing it with nut butters all the time now. Doesn't do it when I just turn it up to 9-10 with nothing in it. Doesn't do it when juicing either.
Would appreciate opinions.
Thanks :)

Sals, have you told HO about this or do you have a consultant that can come and check it out for herself? I know they sent you new blades but do they know it is still noisy.
-
Yes I called them back and they are not sure what it would be. The said the only option is for me to drop it out and they'll check all of the functions. They weren't convinced it was a problem. My concern is that it's only just started happenng.
I'm wondering if anyone else making nut butters or the like experiences this?
Did it sound like it was a problem to you?
-
They don't think it's a problem yet they sent you out new blades?
-
I've only had my tmx for a week or so, so I'm no help, but it doesn't sound great and is a bit of worry that it's not a usual noise. How long is left on your warranty?
-
I know- the person who sent new blades wasn't the one I spoke to yesterday when I told them the problem is still happening. He kind of reasoned that there's not much else it could be and that maybe it's not a problem??? I'm really not sure.
I've got 6 months left on warranty so no massive hurry, but I'm really not sure if I should keep grinding away when it's sounding like a whipper snipper!

I had had this question myself.. it was established that i did not have enough content in the bowl..half batches can do this sometimes depending on the type of food you have in the thermomix... Its all being tossed to side of bowl and the blades are spinning at high speeds with nothing hitting them. Liquid or larger amounts of food need to be added OR scrap down the sides of the bowl and start again... Then keep on cooking like i did!

Selena Rose makes a good point there sals77. With what you were grinding with the frozen banana, frozen coconut blocks and pecans, try adding 1/2 MC of liquid (lemon juice or water) slowly to the bowl and you should hear the sound change. We get used to different noises with our machines and you should notice a difference when you add a little bit of liquid. Stop adding it when the noise changes to something more acceptable, it may not need the whole 1/2 MC.

I think you're right Selena as it only happened when I started doing slightly less in my nut butters.
It doesn't do it when there is nothing at all in the bowl though. When I peered in when it was doing it with hummus this morning, again a smaller quantity, I wondered this myself. It's almost as if the edge of the blade hits the food which is up against the side occasionally and gives this intermittent screeching.
