Title: Hints and suggestions for my birthday party recipe plan
Post by: shkooter on November 12, 2012, 10:34:48 am
I am going to give my new TM a workout over the next week preparing for the birthdays in our family (me, DH and DS are all within 4 days of each other)

We are having a 2pm gathering and I'm planning the following

Sausage rolls (prepare on Thursday or Friday)
Savory Chicken Balls (prepare on Thursday or Friday)
   - EDC Cookbook
Hommus, Dukkah, Sundried Tomato dip (prepare Saturday)
   - EDC Cookbook
Cob Loaf Dip (prepare loaf Friday, dip Saturday)
Chicken Parfait (prepare Wednesday)
Johnro's cookies and cream fudge
   - http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5062.0
Spelt Bread Rolls (prepare Friday or Saturday)
   - EDC Cookbook
White Chocolate Cheesecake (prepare Friday)
Fruit platter (to be prepared by DH Saturday)

and of course the cake will need to be made and decorated, which will be done over Thursday and Friday (and probably Saturday)

Is this even possible? Any hints for me?

Can the Sausage rolls be cooked on Thursday and kept in the fridge or freezer until Saturday? What about the Savory Chicken Balls?  I also have one vegetarian coming - any suggestions as to what I can make?

Am I nuts for even considering all of this?

Thanks

No you are not nuts:)
Have you considered these vegetarian sausage rolls ?http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5376.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=5376.0)
They are really yummy and most people can't tell that there is no meat in them.
Good luck with the cooking

Hi shkooter, I'm glad to see you are trying my sausage rolls!

I cook mine and then freeze them.  They can be defrosted in the fridge overnight and then just reheated on the day.

I would also make the cake in advance and freeze it uniced.  Ice it whilst frozen the day before the party.

Hummus can last up to a week in the fridge in an airtight container with a covering of oil.  Johnro's fudge can be made a week in advance too.

Thanks EmeraldSue.  These look fantastic and I've added them to the list

that's awesome to know.  I'll cook your sausage rolls on Wednesday, and make the veggie rolls (but leave them uncooked) and freeze them both.

I wish I had room to freeze the cake.  I should have enough room to leave it in the fridge though, so I'll do that, I'll need to make a batch of marshmallow fondant at some stage too.  If I remember from last year it'll be better if I make it soon (tomorrow) and keep it in the fridge for a couple of days.

I'm starting to freak out a little already..........

Just think you may be busy but you won't have too much washing up with the tmx.

If it were me shkooter, with all that cooking I would just buy the bread rolls instead of making them - alternatively chookie or one of the expert bakers might be able to tell you how to parbake and then freeze them so you can just finish them off on the day rather than the whole kneading and proving etc when you are trying to et everything else ready.

Sounds like a normal days cooking to me, not stupid. :) :)

So much can be made ahead, and its so quick in the thermomix.

You sound very organised shkooter.

I sound very organized in theory. Whether I can pull it off remains to be seen LOL

If it were me shkooter, with all that cooking I would just buy the bread rolls instead of making them

That's definitely a consideration - it'll depend on how the cake decorating is going

Thanks Kimmy, Astara and Amy.

Fudge was done today - the teensy bit I sampled was delicious.

I've got my liver soaking and my shallots marinating for tomorrow.

So far so good!!

That's very good advice Amy. The main thing is that you enjoy your birthday celebrations.

I'll definitely be enjoying the celebrations.  I'm at the end of a 30 day fitness challenge which included no drinking, so once I have a glass of bubbly in my hand all the stress will be forgotten - or at least someone elses problem  ;D

As long as no one touches my thermie  >:(

Maybe hide thermie under your bed... or somewhere else safe ;)

I'm not doing too badly

Sausage rolls - done
Chicken Parfait - done
Johnro's cookies and cream fudge - done
Vegetarian sausage rolls - filling is prepared (I ran out of puff pastry - d'oh)
Marshmallow fondant - done

Still to do
Cob Loaf - which I'll bake tomorrow. Considering the recipe I decided that having it 2 days old isn't too bad
Spelt Bread Rolls (Saturday)
Dips (prepare Saturday morning)
White Chocolate Cheesecake (prepare Friday)
Fruit platter (to be prepared by DH Saturday)

I'll bake the cake Friday morning, then cut it and decorate it on Friday afternoon and night.  And probably Saturday morning LOL.  If it's a disaster at least Costco isn't too far away  :D

You're doing very well shkooter! :D

I'm sure you won't need to resort to Costco ;)

Don't go to Costco shkooter. It is full of over processed cheap rubbish. Even a disaster (which I am sure wont happen) will taste better than their food. :) :) not many more sleeps now ;)

Another good day today

The cob is baked, although I am going to do a second one tomorrow so that I can make a vegetarian cob dip.
Cheesecake is done
Vegetarian sausage rolls are frozen.

Tomorrow will be baking and decorating the cake, cooking another cob, and making the chicken h'or deuvers from the EDC.

 :) Wish me luck!!!!

Wow, I'm very impressed.

I have DD's party next Saturday, but my thermomix is only coming Fri night beforehand, so just keeping it simple (will def make sorbet though - a couple of her little friends have allergies too, but that will fit the bill.  And a couple of dips).  Will make her cakes (one for playcentre, one for the party) in my stand mixer, and then I'm giving it to Mum (for Xmas)!

But the week after that we are hosting our work Xmas party here - about 30-40 people!  Hope they don't expect toooo much.  There's a decent takeaway place around the corner though if all else fails!

That all sounds great Jo

The party was a success and all the food was delicious. The only problem I ran into was making the buttercream frosting to go under the fondant. I tried making it in the TM, but it was an utter failure, so (after going to the shops to buy icing sugar) I made it using the kitchen aid.

I'm so glad I had the TM. It would have been way harder trying to do everything without it.

Would love to see a picture of your cake in the celebration cake photo thread.
Happy Birthday!

Glad it all went well. I have same prob with buttercream and just prefer to set up bench mixer ( its the only time it gets used now) and go for it the old fashioned way. You get a whiter color which is easier to tint to get the right color result. Well done :)

I'll do a search for that thread and will upload a pic.  I'm pretty proud of my efforts

I had sooooo much fun.  I am glad my sister was here to help out with DS, as I had a couple (too many) drinks, and I was so busy making sure that everyone else was eating that I didn't eat anything other than a couple of bits of bread and dip  :-))
