Title: Doubts?
Post by: Princessbek on November 01, 2012, 12:46:51 am
Hey all!

I am thinking of purchasing a Thermomix BUT I have some doubts? I have been to a demo and love LOVE it and everything it can do.

I live alone and not sure if it will benefit a single person. Also I work longish hours and not sure if I will find the time to be able to use it?

It's a lot of money to outlay for something I'm not sure I will be able to use everyday?

Hi Princessbek, have two friends same as you, single households and work long hours. One has had hers about 2 years and the other 3 weeks. Both make meals when they can and freeze. But they both love it, still get phone calls when they have done something different.

They both enjoy having friends over now as it doesn't take long to whizz up a great meal.

Hope this helps
Sue

Hi Princessbek, I can understand your concerns since it is a big investment. I've had my machine for nearly a year and although I don't have time to use it every single day, I find that even on the days I don't have time to cook we are eating something that has been made in the TMX and frozen e.g. casseroles, soups, breads. Also, once you become more familiar with it, you'll find that it really is very easy to whip up a quick meal.
I only have 1 or 2 days a week when I can go 'all out' and cook up a storm, but I manage to do a lot in that time with the TMX - would do even more if I had 2 bowls! We're a small family (me and the 2 kids) so one meal goes a long way - I freeze portions and then I know I can have a healthy meal on the table quickly, which is handy when I've had a long day at work!
My only frustration is that I don't have time to try all the things I read about on this forum!

Like SueJen I know people who live alone but make a normal recipe and freeze the leftovers or take them for lunch at work.  It is a hard decision I know but perhaps go to another demo.  I had a couple of looks before I brought mine.  Good luck!!!

Hi and welcome, I bought mine 3 years ago, sight unseen, Had a demo after it was delivered.

I use it during the week, but weekends all the time. I make meals and freeze, or take leftovers to work..

Have another demo with another consultant.

I think it would be great for you. You can cook up some meals & freeze into individual portions for days when you dont  feel like cooking. Whip up dips & nibbles for friends quicly. Easy to make a quick cake/biscuits if someone  pops over.

Its a lot of money for 1 person, I understand that.

Hi Princessbek,

I too live alone but decided to get a Thermomix as I wanted to improve my diet and eat fresh, healthy, preservative-free food.  Prior to getting the Thermomix (I've only had it for 2 1/2 weeks) I ate far too much take away as it was quick and easy.  I now cook meals from scratch and often have enough leftovers for 2-3 lunches or dinners.

For me the decision to buy a Thermomix was not easy as I was retrenched from my job a few months ago and the up-front cost is high, however, if I continue to keep away from take away meals it will pay for itself before too long (not to mention the health benefits of eating more nutritiously).  I am trying to use my 'in between jobs' time to make as many new dishes as possible so I can compile a list of quick & tasty dishes that can be thrown together after a long day at work.

The only negative thing I've found about the Thermomix so far is that I am too tempted to make some of the yummy desserts and cake recipes that are regularly posted on this forum by the lovely members!

Go for it, I am sure you will not regret buying a Thermomix.

PB, not a lot more to say after reading what the girls have said.  I would halve some of the recipes so that you get at least 2 meals from each recipe, 4 and you might get sick of that particular recipe very quickly.  There are so many to try that you won't want to be eating the same thing.  Soups I would do the full quantity, casseroles, risotto 1/2 quantity, bread, cakes & biscuits full quantity.  The secret is to leave the TMX out on the bench and not inside a cupboard. It would be so easy to steam vegies for 1, they would all fit into the steaming bowl and at the same time you can have a piece of fish or chicken steaming above in the varoma. You can make things like cheese sauce and freeze leftovers in packs to suit yourself - 1 batch would last you ages if you just wanted it over your vegies,  you can boil some eggs whilst you have a shower in the morning, whip us some amazing cocktails when friends come over - go for it, you will not regret it for one minute and will be the envy of your friends.

PBS, I'm on my own and I just love having Thermie, I mainly only make 1/2 a recipe that is always at least two meals, today I have made bread and again only 1/2 the recipe, but usually do whole amount for bread and freeze it.  It certainally renewed my interest in cooking for myself.

Live alone and busy. That's exactly why u need it. Similar argument for elderly widowed ladies living alone. Easy to make wholesome meals for 1. I know several close to me who luv whipping up a jar of homemade lemon curd. They wouldn't make it otherwise. Good question. Yes it's a big outlay initially

With all the above advice, I don't have much to add. Maybe you could attend a back to basics class. You can find out when they are on by going to the official thermomix site.

Hi PB, Fortunately, I don't live alone, however work long hours, and sometimes unplanned long days, I have found that the TM in this instance helps, as I make something and while it is cooking I am free to do other things, when I have cooked the meal, I vacuum seal and freeze nearly everything that I make, so on the extremely long unplanned days I can just defrost and heat in the M/W

My DD bought her Thermothingy when she was single. She took to it gradually  and as she has Crohns  used it mainly for making gluten free meals. Now she has a partner she cannot live or cook without it. It the best thing she ever bought for herself.

Both of my DDs are single and live alone.  They both have busy lifestyles and mange to use their Thermomixes regularly. DD1 was slow to start with as she was never much of a cook but no makes jams and does all of her own catering for parties. She will often make up a coleslaw or other salad on the weekend and take some everyday for lunch.

I know of a young professional girl who has had a TMX for some years and only makes cocktails and things in it. My DD asked me to give her some recipes from the forum and I hear that she has actually used it for cooking now.
I think that if you buy one, and make yourself use it as other forum members have suggested, you will love it and be very happy.
It will be wonderful to come home from work, grab a casserole from the freezer, put some veggies in the varoma and sit back with a drink and some savoury biscuits you have made in the tmx while dinner prepares itself. Then a lovely icecream you have whipped up in the thermothingy for dessert.

Cooke, you have me ;D i need one now, lol

Seriously, what a great time saver for a single person, plus lovely meals & minimum washing up. When i lived on my own I ddnt like cooking everynight. I used to make meals the hard way & freeze.

Princessbek, I agree with what everyone else on here has said (which is pretty obvious because we are all here 'cos we love out thermomix's)

Yes, it is a huge outlay, but if you can afford it, I honestly think that you will not regret it at all...it is so quick and easy to prepare great meals, snacks, drinks, dips...you name it...it can do it!

Also, just another thought, if you work long hours, then all the better to have a TMX that can make, say a risotto, in just 20 mins! you can have yummy food in your tummy not long after you get home! Not to mention some of the desserts you can whip us in a flash!  ;D

Go for it I say!  ;)

Most members have talked about food.  i would like you to think about other things like washing machine powder and dish washing machine powder,  I no longer pay $9 for the Finish Liquid that I used,  now it cost me $1.50 to do the same number of washes.  Similar result with the washing machine.  Also,  we are on bottle gas.  I now order a bottle every 12 weeks,  instead of every 8 weeks.  I turn ordinary sugar into caster for cooking,  great saving.  If you can possibly afford it , buy it.  You will save in the long run.

Hello Princessbek - Welcome to the forum.  :D
Once you have a TM you will wonder how you got on without it.  :) We all love our thermos here, so you have come to the right place to get talked into it!!
I can't say much about the cooking for 1 thing, I cook for 5 daily.... :)
