Malt Slice
This simply recipe was given to me by Mrs J more than 20 years ago and has been a family favourite ever since.
Ingredients
2 packets of Malt-O-Milk biscuits
180g butter
400g can sweetened condensed milk
2 tbsp golden syrup
1 large block Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate (these have shrunk over the years. You can get away with 200g, but for extra special occasions I buy two blocks, use 250g and eat the leftovers!)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
Method
Crush biscuits for 5 secs on speed 5. Set aside.
Melt butter, condensed milk and golden syrup 3 minutes, 100 degrees, speed 3.
Add crushed biscuits and mix on speed 5 until combined.
Press into standard slice tin (base lined with baking paper). Set aside.
Melt chocolate (I still prefer the microwave for this) and stir in vegetable oil.
Pour over slice and refrigerate overnight or until firm.
Cut into neat squares - a hot knife and ruler work well.
They freeze well - Uni has tried it.

JD - GS and I made this today. I couldn't get the proper biscuits so just bought another brand of malt biscuits and it is really nice. I don't know how many end pieces I ate whilst I was cutting it into squares but I didn't want anything for tea. Thanks Kimmy, this is a winner and would be nice in Christmas hampers.
Cookie - I tried this at Judy's. It is delicious.
Trudy - I've made both the plain and mint version of this lovely slice. For the mint version I melted 250grms of Cadbury mint chip chocolate. Tastes a bit like the mint slice biscuits.
kt2 - Thank you for posting this recipe Kimmyh. It's very tasty and sssooo easy!! Will be making this for DD's school fair.
I topped it with Malteasers!
Uni - thanks Kimmy for a very easy recipe. I halved the recipe and used homemade butter and homemade condensed milk. DD said it taste like a kit kat choc bar. I've frozen 2 pieces for testing for just over 1 month - still yum. Super easy and super yum.
Suzanne - Yum, yum this is absolutely delicious and very easy to make, thanks for a great recipe.
Denzelmum - Made this with Yo Yo (Arnott biscuit from SA) for school fete. Looking good!
-
I can imagine how nice that is Kim.
-
I can too. You definitely have cutting down to a precision art. I will try this recipe soon
-
This does look nice, can you suggest an alternative for this type of biscuits I have never seen them?
-
on my TO MAKE list
-
These look so good! Will hopefully make these on the weekend :)
Thanks for sharing Kimmyh ;D
-
A hot knife and ruler work well CP. :)
GHM they are Arnotts Malt-o-milk and are pretty easy to get at the major supermarkets. They are usually near the other staples like granita, milk arrowroot, etc. Some of the homebrands probably have something similar but I have never tried as I can always get the arnotts ones. The packet looks like this:
-
Hi Kimmyh now that packet looks familiar I must have just been walking past them fro years!!
-
Oh yum yum.

OK this has got my attention :D :D :D just need to know the weight of the block of chocolate ;)
-
I used a 200g block CC but kept a little bit back to pour into some of the holes of a dinosaur mold I had bought GS. When I popped the 6 of them out of the tray later I got the most beautiful thank you from him. You have all that to look forward to.
-
Thanks Judy :-*
What a super Grandma you are making chocolate dinosaurs for GS.I can't wait to get Louis cooking with me,I know he will love working the buttons on the TM :D
-
It's great anytime of the year JD! Glad you like it. When I first started making the recipe, blocks were 250g, but they have shrunk over the years and are now 200g. You can get away with 200g, but for extra special occasions I buy two blocks, use 250g and eat the leftovers!

LOL Kimmy ;D
This slice looks amazing, especially with your perfect cutting Kimmy! ;) I will definitely be making it soon, I'm sure someone's birthday must be coming up.... no, actually, can't think of anyone, but I will find another excuse!!! ;D
-
I am going to make this today so I also thought I would make one using chocolate that has little pieces of mint in it as well. Hope it works out. Will let you know when I have had a taste!!!

That sounds like a great idea trudy! ;)
And there are so many other flavours you could try too.... ;D

Today I made both the plain and mint version of this lovely slice.
For the mint version I melted 250grms of cadbury mint chip chocolate. Tastes a bit like the mint slice biscuits.

Glad you enjoyed it Trudy and love the tweak. If peppermint is your thing, let me know and I will dig up and old recipe for peppermint slice that uses peppermint crisps.
-

-
It probably would have been quicker for you to make your own butter lol :-))
Are you going to make the normal version or add another flavour to it Uni?
-
I need to make these too. will report back
-
Am I wrong or does this slice taste a bit like fudge? It does to me but then I've only made fudge a couple of times, only once successfully.
-
Judy I think it has a fudge like consistency also. Not quite the same but you could sure serve it on a tray with other sweets.
-
Thanks Trudy, that's good enough for me. I find fudge not that easy to get right and this one is so easy.
-
Thank you for posting this recipe Kimmyh ;D

Kimmyh, thanks for this delicious recipe. I will make it today as I know DH will love it. I have posted a similar one, that is un baked, with Apricots in it. I also have posted a coffee flavored one that is baked. I often make 1/2 recipe as DH tends to just keep eating it. Thanks again.
-
Thanks ACW. We have same problem too. It us just so moorish. Half is a great idea.
-
HOW DID I MISS THESE :P :P :P :P :P
H :)
-
super easy and super yum H

Hehe, this looks a lot like the recipe for "Lolly Cake" - a classic kids party food around these parts! Same basic recipe, by the looks (slightly more butter, I think!!), and then you mix in "fruit puff" or "eskimo" sweets (which look a bit like coloured marshmallows but are firm...not sure what overseas equivalent would be).
Then shape into a log and roll in coconut. When cold, cut into slices.
The biscuits we use are just called "Malt Biscuits" but I assume they are similar...?
Might have to make some for DDs 3rd birthday next week. Thanks for the reminder about it! Definitely something from my childhood. :)
-
i want to make a lolly cake now :-))
-
Do you think they might be clinkers in there Uni?
-
i dont think so JD
Pascall Eskimos are used in Lolly cake.
120g Butter
250g Malt Biscuits
190g Pascall Eskimos (cut into pieces)
1/2 tin of condensed milk
Coconut (for coating)
Warm the butter and the condensed milk in the microwave. Add the biscuit crumbs and the Pascall Eskimos (cut into pieces). Stir mixture well. Form the mixture into a log shape or into small balls. Roll in Coconut. Put into the fridge for approximately 4 hours. Once set, cut the log into slices and serve
-
I've never seen Pascall Eskimos, maybe they are a NZ thing.
-
yes they are from NZ
-
i want to make a lolly cake now :-))
thanks for finding the pic. that's them! Yes, a kiwi classic. I think I must usually make a double batch - whole tin of cond milk, which is why I thought it had more butter! (Freezes okay, or lasts a while in the fridge....if it gets a chance!)
-
Thanks Uni, I have never heard of them much less seen them but then I don't spend any time browsing the lolly aisle so it is not surprising.
-
I want to make a lolly cake too!
What a great idea.
-
Couldn't you make a cake with any type of lolly and still call it a lolly cake? I would use pineapple lumps for my mum ;D
-
sure, a lolly cake, but it wouldn't be Lolly Cake ;)
Seriously though, I have heard of pineapple lumps being used, but the eskimoes are more of a similar texture to the slice, and easier to cut. Also tried one with dried apricots instead of lollies. (sheesh, sounds like I eat it all the time!!)
-
The slice with Apricots (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=2414.0) is my Fav.
-
Nice one to bump Chookie. Can you use the low fat condensed milk, does it make a difference to these slices? I am going to make this one once I've done my shopping.
-
Can you use butter in home made condensed milk? I dislike margarine intensely.
Thanks.
-
(sheesh, sounds like I eat it all the time!!)
Don't worry, we won't tell anyone ;D
-

Thanks.
Yes DJ, I use butter in mine.
-
JD was it you that asked if i was going to freeze some ?
well i did, in the freezer just over 1 month. still yum ;D
-
That's great Uni. The chocolate didn't go white or did you freeze it without chocolate?
-
with the chocolate kimm only took about 3mins b4 i ate some :-))
-
No it wasn't me Uni, I just keep mine in the fridge. I ate the last one yesterday - made 23rd October - so they last a while here.
-
Can you use different biscuits in this JD as I have never heard of these?
What biscuits did you use Uni?
They look yum :)
-
I think you need the malt biscuits for the lovely flavour MF, you must be able to buy them over there. If not Arnotts, a cheaper brand is usually available.
-
or make your own
Simple Malt Biscuits
125 grams butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
2 tablespoons golden syrup
2 tablespoons liquid malt extract
2.5 cups self-raising flour
Cream the butter and sugar using an electric mixer. Add the egg, then the golden syrup and the malt extract. Mix until combined.
Sift in the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until well incorporated. Dust hands lightly with flour, then roll dough into small balls and place onto a greaseproof-lined baking tray. Press down slightly with a floured fork. The biscuits will spread and riseonly slightly.
Bake at 140C for about 15-20 minutes or until golden.
-
That's what I thought Judy.
Will have a look for malt biscuits in Coles later and see if Arnotts have some.
Thanks for the recipe Uni will make them if I can't find ready mades in the supermarket.
Prefer homemade but time is restricted due to Xmas preparation.
-
yes coles do have them
-
Thank you ;D
-
made this today using homemade malt biscuits
i add 2 tablespoons liquid malt extract instead of the golden syrup
-
Lovely presentation Uni.
-
Oh Uni that looks awesome. How does it taste?
-
Gorgeous Uni 8)
-
You legend Uni ;D
-
made this today using homemade malt biscuits

You have confused me.
4 T malt
Or 2 T please Uni, thanks
-
I wonder if this would sate nice with ginger punts instead of the malt bickies?
-
Just made this to take on Christmas Day. Hopefully it should be delicious!
I also used Uni's amendment of substituting the golden syrup for malt extract to give it that extra malt taste
-
I wonder if this would sate nice with ginger punts instead of the malt bickies?
I am not sure. I think you need the malt biscuits to give it the taste. Ginger might be too strong.
