Title: Crio Bru
Post by: Amanda on October 13, 2012, 09:29:13 am
For some time now I've been under the impression that Crio Bru was some sort of coffee substitute.  Now, I'm not a coffee drinker at all - I'm a tea girl - so have not paid any attention to it, but have just looked at the website and am wondering if I've got it wrong.  ???

Anyone care to enlighten me?

Amanda it is nothing like coffee. It is like drinking hot chocolate without the fat and sugar.  When you smell it it smells like hot chocolate but it does not taste the same. Tenina recommends trying it with a little sugar and milk. I only had it once and didn't have anything with it just Crio Bru. I found that my nose set my palette up to expect hot chocolate but it doesn't taste like that.

DD is correct. The nose is expecting chocolate and although it is chocolates it's not what you expect. My first lot I wasn't enjoying it very much. Then when I ran out I found I wanted some more. I now love it. Like DD I don't have sugar in mine. I make a crio concentrate and just use a little of that with hot water and milk.

So if it doesn't taste of chocolate, what on earth does it taste of?

It tastes chocolately - but I think it is more of an adult chocolate taste, rather than the "cadbury dairy milk" type chocolate taste we have got used to.  At first I found it a bit watery, but now that I am used to it, it is really lovely, and a great alternative to coffee and tea when you want a hot drink that is a bit different.

If you want to try some, pop round one day and I will brew some up for you  ;)

So is there a preferred flavour as I understand there are 2 or 3 different ones.  ???

Just brewed my first cup of Crio Bru, it was too bitter for me, so I added two tsp of raw sugar ( not so healthy now, but more to my palatte). For those of you who use CB, am I right in thinking I should save the grounds from the brewing for later use??? If so do I dry them out ?

By the time I add milk and sugar to it to make it taste nice, I don't think it's particularly healthy anymore. I like it, but find it's a fiddle to make.

I am hoping it grows on me, as I bought the large bag $33. I will try some in cooking tomorrow..

I started with the Cavalla. I now find this a little too weak.  I love the Vega Real. I have it 2/3 Crio and 1/3 milk. Don't add any sugar. It is a fantastic weight loss tool and appetite suppressant. You can add the grounds to curries and casseroles as well as chocolate cakes. Can't live without my Crio!

Yup! Agreed. I use the grounds in soap that I make.

Hi GHM, 1-2 tablespoons is enough. Doesn't give it a 'chocolate' taste just adds a beautiful depth of flavour.

I like mine with a little cream  ;D
I brew a cup in a single serve French press, pop it in the fridge for the next day. The next day, I add another teaspoon and brew it again. I then pop the grounds in the freezer and use it it my muesli slice, biscuits or whatever comes to mind.

I'm confused!!! A tablespoon of the left over grounds that you have used to brew or a fresh tablespoon???

Sorry, I wasnt very clear :o
The second day, I add a fresh teaspoon of crio to the grounds I brewed the day before. Then I freeze all of the grounds, and start a fresh the following day ( day 3)

Sorry GHM, I meant the left over grounds.  ???

So ES, you get three brus out of your grounds?

Post by: cookie1 on November 04, 2012, 10:26:34 am
I prefer to make the concentrate and use a little of that when I want a drink of crio. I make it up and refrigerate it and use about 1/2 inch in the drink. I add hot water and milk or all milk and ice blocks for a cold drink.

No, GHM. I get two brews and then start again  :)

I'm after advice about making the concentrate.  Could forum members please help me out by telling me what quantities you use to make the concentrate and then what quantities you use to concert that concentrate to a 250ml beverage?

I've looked at Tenina's recipe which has 150g of crio bru and 500ml water - i guess that is super strong?

The crio bru website calls for 1/2 cup of crio bru (guessing that is less than 150g) and 500ml water.

Really looking forward to your advice!

thanks

Also, any advice about straining? How clear do you need to get it? I've run it through a coarse sieve then a coffee sieve. Currently straining through coffee filter paper which is taking forever.

Will a French press really filter the grounds enough?

I'm pretty keen on getting this right :)

I'm with you girls, after trying it at Karen's house a couple of weeks ago.
It was nice enough, but I can't really think why I would drink it instead of tea or real hot chocolate.

Have to say I personally think its very overrated.

Yup! Agreed. I use the grounds in soap that I make.

Consumerate, I made the concentrate up yesterday ,but haven't used it yet.. I strained mine through a chux cloth placed inside a strainer and have bottled it. I then used the leftover grounds to make instant smoothie blox also from Tenina's website.
I made myself a hot crio Bru for breakfast using some of the leftover grounds with a teaspoon of new grounds. It was really nice as it carried the flavour of the cinnamon and maple syrup.
I hope you enjoy yours :)

Thanks EmeraldSue. I will try the chux method next time. I think coffee filter paper is just too fine for it.

Have you got the recipe for making concentrate? I just went to get mine, but I have put it away somewhere safe while I was away.  If you don't have it I will hunt it out.  I'll need to as I want to make some . I think it's something like 150g crio to 700 or 800g water. I am not sure of the sugar quantity as I don't put sugar inmine.

Thanks to both of you. Am going to try and make concentrate on the weekend.  I bought 3 bags, one of each flavour so I can do plenty of experimenting.

I brewed some crio bru through an aeropress (http://www.aeropress.com.au/) this morning. By far the best flavour I have extracted so far. Did always prefer coffee brewed this way. Can't drink coffee anymore though so crio bru is it!

That looks a good way to do it.  I just checked and there is a place nearby I could buy it . $49 Would be a nice Christmas gift from me to me. 8) 8) I could then use it when I am in the van for coffee and crio.

Handy!

They are so much easier to clean than a French press too.

Wow, that Areopress looks awesome! When my filter coffee machine dies, I'll get one of those.
I bought a frother from Woolies for $29! I also got the pod from Woolies for our Albany house. It was only $79, made in Italy and works brilliantly.

Not sold on crio either... By the time you get it to taste good its not that good for you..too watery for my liking..however did like teninas syrup but so much sugar!
