Yesterday DH was using the knead function, and walked away from the machine. CRASH! One TMX hits the floor :o :o
The lid is cracked and split quite badly, but it still appeared to work OK. I thought (after my initial angry response "you did WHAT??") I would just have to buy another lid. We tested the scales and the temperature, and they seemed to still be calibrated and accurate.
But today, while cooking with liquid things, I realised the bottom of the jug leaks. And it is not stuff coming out of the cracked lid and down the sides. Somehow it must have bent the jug, and anything liquid leaks out the bottom of the jug and over the pins etc etc .....
Luckily we have a second bowl set, because it looks like this one is broken :'( :'(
So the lesson is ........ never (let DH use the TMX) walk away from TMX when it is kneading.

Karen, what a disaster and so easy to happen. Lucky you have a second jug.
I read this post and thought what would I have done? And thought it wouldn't have been pretty ;D
-
OH MY GOODNESS! ( or something more colour full).
He will never live this down.
Hope he orders you a new one ASAP and cOoks dinner tonight
-
Oh dear Karen, that is terrible. I have heard of many a mixer coming off the bench whilst kneading dough.
Lucky you have another jug. I bet Dh won't do that again.

. . . . or set it up on the floor with no place to go!! Oh Karen - big deep breath!!! I know WE know we need to keep an eye on it kneading . . but others I imagine aren't quite as used to the little quirks - such as it doing the polka over the bench top on this setting. Your poor DH! I really feel for him!!
-
You girls are SO good tempered . I would have thrown it at him. Just joking. ;D
-
Chookie - I think I wanted to throw it at him - but the poor thing looked so crestfallen (and a bit scared of me I think) that I couldn't really say what I really wanted to. Still, lesson learned!
-
Lucky you have an extra jug and you can keep cooking, but that's so awful for you. I guess the bright side of the story is your TMX is ok and it's just the jug. It could have been worse.
I can imagine your DH would have felt terrible.
-
Oh you poor thing!! I know just how you feel as I had one of my DS's drop mine helping pack for a demo one day. Your heart certainly stops beating!! If I need to walk away from mine for a short time now I push it to the back of the bench and pace a plastic bowl in front of it ... If the bowl hits the floor I know I need to run ... Very fast!
-
I agree, - Just think of it this way . . . the jug can easily be replaced . . . the DH (who sounds as though he's worth a heck of a lot more than a kitchen appliance) can't be . . . . ;)
Please someone correct me if I'm wrong . . I think it was Thermomixer who suggested placing it in a clean dry sink . . . .(was it making the quince paste? Can't quite remember . . . .)
-
I held my breath while I waited for this thread to load Karen, I was really worried for you and your TMT!!
If that happened to me, I think I would cry. But luckily the only man in this house is SD, and he knows not to touch my favourite toy or else he won't get dinner ;D
-
Oh wow Karen...Think I would have freaked out so bad....feel for you and your DH.
Lucky you have a second bowl.... :)
-
Kathryn, I really like your tip of putting the empty plastic bowl in front of the TMX - such a simple but incredibly practical idea. Thanks for passing that on.
-
Oh! Karen how terriable. Makes one think "get another bowl quick!!" I bet he feels really bad, but thank goodness you have another bowl set so you won't be without your TM.
-
You girls are SO good tempered . I would have thrown it at him. Just joking. ;D
frank would thrown him self out
-
Dear Karen, How awful. Eek! If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest contacting your consultant to have the Thermomix serviced. It's not just the bowl that may have been damaged. You don't know whether there are issues in the motor/computer too if the whole thing fell off. Good luck sorting it out.
-
Karen how awful. My DH has just cracked a sick funny(I told him what had happened). He said you knead some dough to fix the tmx.
My DD dropped my bowl some years ago and dented it. She was devastated. I was furious but felt so sorry for her.

;D ;D ;D ROFL cookie ;D ;D ;D Your DH is very funny!!!

You were right goldfish, this is what Thermomixer said - NOTE that I placed silicon mats under the feet of the TMX to prevent it moving on the bench. Another alternative if you are not watching all the time is to place the whole machine into an empty kitchen sink to prevent it wandering off the bench.
I can just imagine how your DH felt Karen, accidents happen and thank goodness you did have that second bowl. I would certainly have the damaged equipment looked at, you never know what they can do to repair it. Do you have an active consultant?
Kathryn I do the old-bowl-in-the-front-of-the-TMX trick if I am going to duck out of the room for a short time, not when it's kneading or anything vigorous but just general cooking just as a precaution.
-
Wow Karen how awful. :o Let's hope your DH will surprise you with a new bowl ;)
-
i place a 5 kg hand weight in front of the TM when keanding, so far so good

Another good idea Uni :)
-
OH dear and I bet both your hearts stopped for a second, glad all is ok though xx
-
Can relate to that one Uni ;D ;D ;D
-
This nearly happened to me about 3 days after getting my TMX. I was making my first bread, pressed knead, turned to put something in the fridge, turned back and it was less than an inch from the edge of the bench and walking like a robot ! I've never moved so fast and felt sick.
I'm going to try Kathryn's suggestion of the bowl in front of it. Good hint.
-
Oh, Karen how dreadful. At least you have a second bowl.
There are some good tips for securing TMX when kneading. I will try in the sink if I have to leave it.
-
Let's hope your DH will surprise you with a new bowl ;)
better still, Guilt him into getting you another one, as this one could pack up at any time :P ;)......who wouldn't love 2 TM's ;D
-
Oh boy, I would be devastated! (though it would be an excuse to try the HMP!)
I use Thermomixer's trick of putting it in the sink when doing any extended kneading. I pop a towel in first for it to sit on.
-
I usually stand there and hold it. Too scared to do anything else.
-
Oh no Karen how terrible I would not have been happy. AT least you have a second bowl.
-
I do the put it on the floor thing if I have to leave it when kneading. :)
-
I usually stand there and hold it. Too scared to do anything else.
Same...kneading doesn't go for long anyway, so everything else can wait ;)

Well...nearly everything can wait...except toilet training kids!!!! ;)

true....just turn it off next time and it will wait for you ;)
-
Well thats brains ... I hadn't thought of that!!!! :D
-
:P I don't miss those toilet training years at all! both my kids took forever :-X
-
I was concerned DD would be 21 before we got there. I think it was more me than her though.
-
My DD is 21mths and pretty much trained....but when she needs to go, she needs to go NOW!! :-))

After more investigation and closer inspection today, it appears that the only casualties of TMX hitting the tiles are the lid and the blades ........ one of the little plastic things broke off the blade set, and that is why it leaks. If I put the other set of blades into the (dented) jug, it works fine and doesnt leak.
So the cost of the new blades and new lid is around $200 ...... which is much cheaper than buying a whole new TMX, and cheaper than a new bowl and blades set. So DH is kind of off the hook ...
Especially since I got a speeding fine in the mail today, which cost more than the replacement blades and lid :o :o :-X :-X
-
Oh no that's not good at all. Guess you and DH should call it evens.
-
Glad you have it worked out Karen - don't you just hate those speeding fines. Yes all even in the house but 2 expenses you could have done without ;)
-
Thanks for posting Karen I will take better precautions when I use the kneed function, I was probably a bit casual about it! Great we can learn from your DH, he can be thanked for that at least! Emma
-
Uh OH ....
2 precautions needed now...TM calamities and speeding fines
-
Thanks for posting Karen, I often duck off into my mini kitchen - the TM sits on a bench around the corner as there's no room - I am aware that is moves and I tend to hover close enough to catch it *grin*. There's have been some great suggestions here so I'll be using the bowl in front strategy I think.
