anyone know what the dark green vegs is, i think the middle one is chinese spinach
-
Mmmmm, not too sure, sorry Uni. It looks like it may be in the silverbeet/chard family ???
-
Don't know google something you think it is and hope it has a picture :D :D
-
Kale, I have it growing and use it in VSC fungj
-
I agree with SJ I think it is a form of Kale.
-
thanks ladies
what do i do with it
-
some people like it cooked like silverbeet but I only use for the VSC. Always plant it near broccoli and cauli, the white moths seem to attack the kale and leave others alone
-
Shrek juice (here on forum under drinks or breakfast)
-
Uni, there is a great recipe for kale chips in notquitenigella website. On my list to do. Supposed to be delish.
-
no way in hell will i be drinking it CP ;D
-
absolutly agree
-
It's quite a strong tasting green with a slight bitter taste. I would pan fry it if you don't like to try kale chips ....super healthy kale!!
-
Soups, salads, throw a handful into a green smoothie . . and it's lovely just steamed . . . I saw somewhere a great sounding recipe for a kale and blue cheese salad . . . I'll see if I can find it. . .
-
Kale chips are meant to be really yummy. I've seen a recipe on Helene's super kitchen machine blog under snack/party recipes. :)
-
Is it cavalo nero or is it not dark enough for that?
-
I thought it may be the tuscan black cookie
-
Uni - have a look here for some recipes . . http://allrecipes.com/recipes/everyday-cooking/seasonal/winter/kale/top.aspx
Cant find the salad one I mentioned earlier - I'll keep looking . . .
-
I tend to think that it's cavalo nero as well.
-

I tend to think that it's cavalo nero as well.
I'm with Cookie and Marina on this veg ;D
-
Uni I just looked up Cavalo Nero, I think I might have to change my mind and go with that too. Italian Cabbage. That is why you have it..LOL
-
Don't really know, thought I'd take a photo of my Tuscan black but have used most of the good leaves

-
Helene has one on Superkitchenmachine (http://www.superkitchenmachine.com/2011/10646/oven-baked-kale-chips-recipe.html) too Uni.
-
Uni I have curly kale growing and I have had it in a smoothie with Banana, apple,a bit of honey if you like sweet. whatever I have going for the day, usually i combine it with a banana as it is strong tasting, but it is supposedly a super food.
-
JD looking at the pic of the kale on helenes site, mine doesnt look like that, oh boy its getting to hard 4 me i think i will just steam them :-))
-
Yep, just steam it and see what it tastes like.
-
Surely it has to be sort of like spinach Uni - let us know how it goes.
-
Uni don't know whether this will help or not
Cavolo Nero recipe (http://theitaliangardener.com.au/pages/Braised-Cavolo-Nero-recipe.html)

thanks marie, so u thinks it Cavolo Nero
-
I think it is Uni here is another link
Cavolo Nero (http://www.abc.net.au/tv/cookandchef/txt/s1969411.htm)
I have seen Maggie cooking with it and it looked the same as your photo but could be wrong.

If the photo you had Uni, was taken in WA I'd definitely say it was Kale - Black Tuscan. :) :) :)
-
i must say it starting 2 look like Cavolo Nero 2 me 2 , i will get DH to ask the gardener 2morrow at work
-
Just had a look at the link and a couple of others. In Australia Black Tuscan and overseas Cavolo Nero. So its one and the same.
-
I'm going with kale - we had it growing in our vege patch, but the white moths got to it in the last couple of days and practically decimated it! Very fat white moths flying around at the mo ;D
-
Good on you Suejen, good detective work.
-
kezza, I mainly grow kale as a sacrificial plant. White moths love it and leave caulis and broccoli alone. I prefer broccoli and caulis to kale. Only use kale in VSC, excellent for that.
-
SueJen as I re-read this thread, I was beginning to think that perhaps Cavalo Nero and Black / Tuscan Kale were also the same thing (surprising what a night's sleeping on a conundrum can do).
-
DH said it is Kale, he just checked it out at work, the sign in the garden said so lol
