Its a come on....its a file download service that you have to pay for.  There are quite a few of them floating around.  Personally I avoid them.....the contents are usually not "legal".

I went there and paid for the three day membership as I figured that it wasn't going to break the bank at $1.99, but could not download the book.

I'd love to be able to download ...preferably legally...copies of the cookbooks.  I've actually scanned the ones I own to pdf because I  prefer using ebooks to paper books.  I'm gradually scanning a lot of my other cookbooks which are small enough to as pdfs and I'm purchasing any new ones that I want as ebooks if they are available.  I'm finding that a lot of the American ones are available but very few of the Australian ones.  I've just bought a copy of the CWA cookbook which would make a fantastic doorstop, it is so large.  I would have far preferred it as an ebook.

It seems that, by taking out a 'trial' 3 day membership I selected to join the automatic rebill service!  I have now emailed them cancelling this option and stating that I would refuse to honour any future charges they make, etc. etc. etc.  I also requested that they remove all of my details from their records and not sell them on.  It will be interesting to see what happens.

You are right, of course, Gert, $1.99 x ? times is a lot of money.  I see, however, that the charge has not yet been made against my credit card.  I am sure it will, of course and I will be adding to their coffers in my own small way.

Yes, Uni, I gave them my credit card details - I guess they wouldn't have allocated me with a subscription number or permitted me to attempt the download had I not done so.

I had no suspicions about the site until I got to the download stage and couldn't download the book, but alarm bells really started ringing when I saw on the subscription confirmation letter that I had requested the automatic rebill service - I started thinking that there was something wrong because I am sure I was careful not to select this option as I was going through the registration / payment process.

That's good advice, Uni.  I will wait the three days, though, to see how it all pans out.  Hopefully this will all just die and nothing more will happen.

Most cc payments come up as Pending first. Keep an eye on your account for any suspicious debits...and maybe call your bank to get their opinion. These scammers are so depressing  :'(

OK, I held back a while before posting here again and following up on this saga.

The initial charge of $1.99, which I agreed to, was deducted from my visa card, so that was OK.  I was holding back from posting on here further until I could see what had happened and I am pleased and relieved to say that the unasked for subscription was cancelled without any further charges against my card, so all has turned out fine.

As you said, lots of $1.99s do add up in the long run, but I can handle that - I would have been taking further action had the full subscription been charged, though.

I did ring the bank, just to be sure that all was OK and they said they couldn't do anything until and / or unless a charge had been made to my card.  So everything has turned out fine in the long run.
