Title: Paypal fraud
Post by: maddy on September 11, 2012, 02:46:06 am
I know Gert mentioned she has experienced this....and now I have  >:(
Was online paying some bills and found a paypal transaction made from my account for $360.82....and It wasn't me that did it  :o
Was lucky it was a small amount, as I have heard far greater horror stories.
I had just lodged a fraudulent claim, and in record time I received a response saying that have dealt in my favour, and will notify when refund is lodged.
Now for this to have all been handled with in the space of 3 minutes, suggest there was a stuff up on their end  :-\

You really do have to keep an eye on your accounts regularly.
What I'm waiting to see is if they refund the full amount!
Transaction was listed as amount sent: $347.00, fee amount $13.83.
They only mentioned $347.00 in the first response for refund....but look out if they try and sting me $13.83 for the bogus fee charge  >:(
If I have a fight with that,, I'll put Gert on to them!  :P

I'm glad you are going to get your money back Maddy. I don't think $347.00 is a small amount.
I only keep a few hundred dollars in my paypal account and transfer extra when necessary.

I feel sorry for the person on the other end having been in that position myself. They will lose the total amount having given goods/refund back to the fraudster and then they have to refund the rightful owner of the credit card  :'(

I watch my credit card accounts like a shark and google any unusal business names that I think may have wrongly debited my card. Quite often clear up any doubts that way, and then I will call them to clarify.

Maddy I'm so sorry to hear of this.  I'm glad that you will get a full refund.  CP I think all of us must take a leaf out of your book and check more thoroughly.  It's so easy to buy online but I just hate how you have to be watching over your shoulder all the time because of these idiots!!!

I am still getting  crapola from PayPal. Would not touch it ever again. It is impossible to delete your account.

You were lucky with that one Maddy. Hope you are not going to have a problem with your beautiful black Armoire.

Oh Maddy I hope it's just that they are busy and haven't been able to get back to you. If there address is in the Northern suburbs I'm happy to take a drive at lunchtime and see if there shop or premises are open.

I always thought PayPal was the way to go.

I have also had fake emails, supposedly from PayPal, detailing a recent "transaction", and advising how to get a refund if I haven't made the purchase. I assume that would entail confirming my bank details for the refund....

I realised straight away it wasn't genuine, as I have a different email address registered with PayPal, and real emails from them go into my inbox, not the spam folder. Otherwise, it looked like the real deal.

Maddy do you pay by credit card via Paypal ? Sometimes (depends on your bank) you have a second point of recourse with your credit card provider as well.

I would 100% start a paypal dispute immediately though if you can, don't delay on this because of the timing to make the claim. If they come through with the goods you can always cancel it, but sometimes it's the shakeup they need to respond to you.

We deal with PayPal all the time on my sites and they are extremely stringent with us regarding security. I would contact them with your story directly. Make sure you have as much info in front of you as possible when you call. Good luck.

Also keep in mind that you may  be dealing with someone in another country. I had to speak to,people in Texas which is a whole nother country believe me, the Phillipines and Australia.

You are a sweetie wonder!  :-*

Well, a little progress.  The paypal refund is currently pending, but I can see on my bank statement it's in progress...so that's good.
Paypal is linked by credit card to 1 account.....so I will be contacting bank  to get a new card (it was only updated 2 weeks ago).
All passwords, security etc. have been changed, and online security is always up to date.
Have been using paypal for years, and this is the first incident I've had.  I guess any way of paying electronically poses risks.
Think I will set up a separate account exclusively for online stuff....so it's not linked to everything else.

Glad to hear it is all being cleared up Maddy.

We have a separate account for just Paypal safer that way

Maddy, The decision is of course yours but I'd still make a paypal dispute (but advise the Company what you are doing and say you're just covering yourself because of the time limits for making a claim) then all communication is made via Paypal and is easily tracable ! Otherwise if you wait, you will be outside the period for making a claim and won't be able to do anything about it.  There doesn't have to be any action to recover the money yet, but if need be you can escalate from a dispute to a claim ! By already having a dispute, I'm not 100% sure but I think it will extend the period out for you.

Just my thoughts and it does pay to protect yourself I think ! Up to you !

Good thinking Debbie. Good to get that customer complaint number  so you always have continuity because you talk to someone different each time.  Also if you can spot the trouble before the bank remits to pay pal the bank will handle everything.

Sorry Debbie....I probably didn't explain my self well....it has all gone through the dispute system on paypal Australia.
I did that as soon as I discovered it. It has been acknowledged as a fraudulent transaction, and the money is in the processes of being refunded.  It takes 3-5 days to appear in my account.  I can see via statements that the money is currently pending.
All communications is documented through paypal, and my email.
Thanks for your concerns though  :) :)

I always wonder why when you buy online they won't deliver parcels to a PO Box it has to be an actual address? When you apply for a PO Box you have to have proof of ID, so why do they specify an address - does anyone know?

CP I bought kids costumes online 1 week ago, and it had to have a proper address for AAE to deliver overnight, not a PO box.

Maybe as you need to sign for it.

I have everything now delivered to work now.

My DH and I do a lot of online shopping and we always have the parcels delivered to our PO Box.
We've never had a problem.

The only time I couldn't and had to use a street address, it was because the parcel was being delivered by a courier and not Australia Post.

Not when you are standing outside because you cannot get in because of the stuff. it is really annoying that yoy cannot even get in to grab an envelope.  ???

When will they realise that the more you cram in, the less you sell  :-\
