I don't think I would have any use for the machine. I love Jamie Oliver and have his 15 min cookbook on preorder  ;D I am loving the reruns of his 30 min meals.

It looks like a modern digital version of the kitchen stir, which has been around for a while

At least you'd know that the recipes would be good, and Jamie originals, not copied from another appliance book.

It's an American kind of multi purpose cooking appliance that sautés stir fry's and slow cooks. I think there are 2 different models with different temperature ranges. Don't know if that's 100% correct but that's what I think. It looks almost Identical to the picture shown of the new Jamie Oliver appliance. It's been around for a while but haven't seen it on retail here.

I googled it and found that Harvey Norman have it listed online with the chopping tower. Not in stock, though.

My friend would like to see it, a Thermomix is out of her reach, and she doesn't already have a food processor. Puréeing and weighing are missing, but you can fry. It would be good for her to take in her caravan.

Ohhh, I didn't realise that this chops as well  8)
Can't wait for feedback, it looks really good and a much better quality TM alternative....at least it's more affordable  8)
I couldn't imagine Jamie being associated with a sub standard product, so that's very encouraging.
I guess this product will open the floodgates....their timing is perfect....I imagine it will be on a lot of Christmas lists.

Funny to find this thread :-). I came across it by accident while googling for recipes for the homecooker.  I was considering getting a second thermomix but choking at the financial impact of it.  I'm now um-ing and ah-ing as to whether to get this instead. I suspect it might compliment (but certainly not replace) my thermomix nicely as they do different things really, but it still includes the bits that I often wish i had a 2nd thermomix for.  I'm going to mull on it for a little while.

CW From what i have seen on the net and IMO it would make a nicer bol sauce, nap sauce ,soups and  risotto than the TM

I would love a 2nd TM, but cant justify the price.

Does this one slice & grate nicely? If it does that woud def my choice.

I would like to get the cutting tower. Sometimes I just don't want things processed and I gave away my food processer when I got the TMX. Having said that I do have a tefal cutter thingy.  :)

I have a Philips HomeCooker with tower attachment. Got it at Harvey Norman in Australia. (Carted it home to the US and power it with an unsightly transformer...) I don't own a TM, but have longed for one and attended a demo, so here are some observations and comparisons.

The HomeCooker is indeed reminiscent of the Kitchen Stir, but it does have true temperature control. One difference with other devices is how they get the stirrer to work without having to seal the bottom. The pot has a center post with a hole on the top that the stirrer fits onto. There's no seam at the bottom, and cleaning is relatively easy. Also nice are the steaming attachments, which include a deep pasta/rice basket that fits into the pot, a steaming basket that goes on top of the pot, and a steaming tray that goes on top of the basket. You can use all three at the same time, which gives a lot of capacity.

One drawback compared to TM is the number of temperature levels. The HC only allows a limited set of temperatures, something like 70, 90, 110, 130, 175, and 250C. (This is from memory, I'll have to check the machine itself.) This is fine for most cooking as it can handle almost anything. But what I'd really like is fine control, which would allow for sous vide cooking. Here the TM is better with its finer increments, although even better would be 1 deg C increments. That said, the HC does get hotter than the TM, and the high temps are especially nice for tasks like caramelizing sugar. I do think the stirrer works very well, perhaps better than the backwards cutter of TM.

Of course, a huge difference is in the cutting. I think of the TM cutter as something between a blender and a food processor. The HC is at the other extreme of food processing, more towards slicing than chopping. There are five cutting attachments, for doing slicing, grating, julienne, etc. but nothing equivalent to chopping on pulse like a real food processor. The tower comes apart relatively easily for washing. As a cutter it kind of helpful because it empties straight into the pot, and as a separate item you can more easily cut things of different sizes in any order. (Whereas TM works best if coarser items are added later, unless you are willing to empty the pot after chopping.) But the HC tower cutter is pretty flimsy and not perfectly accurate, as some bits do fall outside the pot. At an extra cost of AU$XXX (price removed at request of moderator) I don't think it's worth it. Might as well spend the money on a dedicated food processor, which would be more flexible and also do some real chopping/blending.

Overall, the HC does have its conveniences and if you dispense with the tower, it is not too expensive at about AU$XXX (price removed). The recipe book emphasizes risottos, and definitely it is great to free up your attention to other tasks while something simmers away at controlled temperature and automatic stirring. But overall it is not comparable to the TM in terms of convenience, which saves you the trouble of a separate food processor and the attendant hassles.

Is the HC worth it? I'm not sure how to judge it or any other kitchen gadget, because it is all about convenience. Like the TM, it doesn't do anything you can't already do in the kitchen, it just makes things easier. I do think the TM has a special appeal because it really cuts down on a number of seeming insignificant steps, by integrating weighing, chopping, stirring, and heating. Put that together and it really is an enabler. The HC only does stirring and heating well, and cutting not so well and with lots of attachments to wash afterwards. In the end, I would forget the tower cutter and just buy the main HC and enjoy it for the particular convenience it provides. But I wouldn't put it quite in the same category as TM.

Dear all - I'm standing in Hornsby target now and they have two of these machines on clearance price... With the cutting tower included... If *one* was to say that there are *seven* days in the week but only *five* of them are working... Would that give you all an indication of the financial outlay you'd need to make...?
I'm sorely tempted but have no storage space and would really prefer double glazed windows and gas-fired central heating (hydronic heating)...
So will try to be restrained and go to find my children instead!!!
Rgds

Well I did find the children. Did also return to see if anyone had rushed in to buy one (not yet). And totally agree with you Obbie - but I really am bursting at the seams... And I don't think buying more appliances is the way to convince DH of major rearrangement changes being needed in the kitchen...
So I didn't indulge... And will no doubt really pine for it once the option has gone!!!

Post by: teagg on March 22, 2014, 11:53:50 am
Ummmm
I'm not sure about not missing what I never had... But then again my mother did always tell me that I had a very active imagination as a child... !!
And you are right - it is good to have the munchkins - though to be honest - they'd have found me if I'd taken too long - they did in all the other shops today.... ;-)

But it was their shopping day, not mine (too much like hard work to traipse round shops...) (well with the exception of sewing and kitchen-related shops.....)

We managed nearly five hours... I think that constitutes some form of exercise and I should be let off for good behaviour....

...

Thank you for the comment about jam making - to be honest if that's your primary use then I won't miss it... I need more jam in my life like a hole in my head.............😳

And TMX has pride position over the hob/under the extractor fan (on a glass cutting board thingy) - so there's no other spot for another steam-producing item....

...

But if you do get one.... Please let me know what you use it for, and what your thoughts are, on it!!!!!
Gx

I bought my daughter and son-in-law one on clearance. They love it. Make risotto, casseroles, soup. I really like the tower. It's the one thing I miss with TMX, doesn't slice or grate.
