Title: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on August 28, 2012, 02:05:05 am
I thought I would start a thread that we could use to share all our tips and help for iPad users. I will start by saying everyone with an iPad wanting to use it to post photos on the forum should first download from Apple iTunes Store Tapatalk HD . It costs about $2. At the moment.
Be sure to register it with Tapatalk. Find the forum and if you cannot figure it out I will try to explain it.

The next useful one to buy is IPad Secrets Tips and Tricks which is only .99 and is awesome. I use it all the time. Easy reading and great for dummies like me. It is also good because  it will reveal more secret stuff every few months. There are  Lot of secrets embedded in your iPad. Steve jobs loves his little secrets.

You will also learn when using the iPads why you see so many commas. Easy mistake while typing.

I am sure you all have a Few tips to contribute.

Andisenji  has done the courses so I am sure she will want to contribute as she is far more tech savvy than moi.

We don't want any techno babble just plain  talk.

Nazar's DH will want to know why the VDO I sent him was upside down. I don't know.  What I do know is that when sending stuff from my  Apple iPad to my Microsoft Windows PC it is often upside down. Probably a joke between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates.  Ha Ha boys. Play a Joke on God yet Steve?

A lot of stuff can be seen on You Tube. There is always some nerd who wants to show off. Some VDO's are better than others depending whether they want to show what they know or just want to show off.

Mr  Google is  most useful so go there first. The real Apple shops  hold  tutorials all the time for free and the staff are there to help in real time so ask.

If I we can put all the stuff we know here we will have a great resource very handy.

If you have favourite app and know how to use it then please share.  If anyone mentions Angry Birds they will be banned until they smarten up and fly right.

All typos will be silently acknowledged because we all know how it happens. If the bloody thing does not acknowledge Andisenji  name as a real name it will after about 4 attempts so trust it.  Another little secret.

Maybe we could leave quotes out and  just put each tip or trick in a new post so when searching it will come up easily.

Nd will be accepted as and to save everyone  retyping it. Don't ask you will get it. If there is no cap at the  start of a sentence  ignore it as we all will get it.

Automatic spelling corrections are a pain in the ass but try using the iPad without it at your peril.

Anyway. What to you think?

Oh o maybe I should have asked MM first.  Nah the moderators will give me a slap first.

Gert

iPad tip.

As some of us  have names not recognisable to the English language, I find the iPad will recognise it after  few attempts  usually three or four when using auto correction.

You will find the settings for this by going to Settings, General, Keyboard.

Tip for a shortcut.

If you use a word like Thermomix and you do not want to type it all the time you can create a short cut.

Settings, general, keyboard, shortcut.

I created TMXTHINGY by making my Shortcut TMX.

Thanks Gert. I learned a lot from you over the retreat. The iPad secrets is really good. I have only glanced at it so far. After the housework and cooking ( I missed TMX) I will get into it.
One very bad thing I learned on the retreat is to have your iPad with you and handy. Now mine is on the kitchen bench and I keep stopping to check it and of course get hooked looking. Bad habit, but I love it CP you MUST DO IT.

A new hint. Tap the arrow you use for capitals etc twice In quick succession and it will lock on and you can WRITE LIKE THIS.  Caps lock really. Just found out the other day.

Tip when posting photos on Tapatalk.

When the photo code is on the  posting and still highlighted be sure to press return before going on to adding another photo or text  otherwise you  might lose it and have to redo it.

I have an android (Samsung Galaxy Tablet), they are so similar to iPads, I hope it's OK for me to post a hint too!

My hint is when you find a recipe online that you like, you can just take a screen-shot of it (there is an icon to do this at the bottom of the screen), then you will have it saved in your gallery for quick reference. It also helps as you don't need internet access and can take/use the recipe everywhere! My tmx and tablet are rarely seen without each other!

I also do this regularly with my smartphone, I take photos of recipes then email the photo to myself so I have in my tablet when cooking at home and on my phone when I am out shopping.

Excellent. Maybe we need an android thread so people don't get confused.

Great tip. I will put it up for the iPad.

Tip for taking screen shots.

A screen shot is seeing something in your screen and taking a picture of it.

To take a picture of what you are seeing  put your thumb on the  round indentation with the square  in white which is on the short side by the power adapter plug.

At the same time put your pointer finger on the On / Off button  on the opposite short  side  where the camera eye is.

With your thumb and finger in place click them together. You will then find the photo in your Photos.

I missed all the iPad lessons I was looking forward to but slowly I am working out the basics which is getting me through.  Can we ask questions here too?

As a moderator I will answer my own question - YES  :D :D

Gretchen, I downloaded my pictures just after I got the original iPad but didn't realise there were some food pictures in there which hadn't been deleted.  I don't want to keep them but have no idea how to delete them from the iPad.  Bet it's simple but I have tried and can't do it.

Tip removing photos from iPAD 2 and 3  and hopefully iPad 1

Open photos. Scroll to find the photo you want to remove. Tap on it.  See the garbage bin on the upper right hand corner? Tap on it.  Tap delete. Gonski.

Now sometimes the pesky  stuff  along the top with the useful  bits disappears . Just slide your finger along the top edge and it will appear.

In that case you may have to live with it until someone with an iPad one can help. Bugger!

There is a new iPad mini coming out in  October  that will be not so expensive . Maybe you could pass that very generously given one along to another  and buy a new one.

I am all for passing things forward as you know. I like to pass forward to strangers and not to family.

No garbage bin Gretchen.

Did you transfer  this photo from your PC? If so you may be able to delete it from there as it will be view only on your iPad 1.

Yes it was transferred from PC but I don't want pictures of food on the iPad.  I delete them once I've posted them on the forum.  No worries, someone will know the answer Gert.

Try hooking up  your iPad up to the PC going to the food photo in the PC and delete it there. It should then sync and remove it from your iPad.  Since you have no camera on your iPad one it is view only and you cannot alter or delete it.

Gert.

I think this is what yo mean, and I apologize if I've misunderstood. To delete photo's you tap the box with the arrow inside of it at the top right hand side of the screen, then tap the photos that you want to delete. A little tick will appear on the photo then you can tap the delete button that appears at the top left of the screen. As a side note, you can also tap the share button and email multiple photo's as well.

Also, speaking of photos, you can save photos from the Internet/Safari by tapping it and holding your finger down on it for a second or so. A button will appear to 'Save Photo'. Tap that and it'll save to your photos app.

Thanks for the tip on making your own shortcuts Gert! I knew there was something there, but hadn't got around to exploring and finding out.

This is an iPhone tip, not an iPad one: When taking photos, you can move the white square around and the lighting will be taken from this area. To test it, take a landscape photo and move the square to the sky, take another and move it to the foreground or hills/water in background. Try lots of different areas and compare the photos.

Since I have an iPad2, I rarely use it for photos, but do use my iPhone quite a lot.

JS, it sounds as though you may have to delete it that way. I have some photos on my iPad that can't be deleted from the iPad, maybe because you put it on from the computer, you have to remove it from the computer.

I can see the logic in it jakodai but I thought iPads were smarter than that.

judydawn with the ipad one i vaguely remember there being a glitch where if the photo was downloaded from the computer it needs to be deleted via the computer but if you have loaded it directly to the ipad via the camera connector you can delete directly from the ipad. I'm assuming you don't have the camera connector so looks like you will need to delete from the computer first and then sync the ipad.

Very cheap at 99 cents.  I think I have saved myself more than that in time, not having to use safari for my favourite sites. They are all in one icon now marked favourite sites.

Personally I think it is a joke between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.

You have to think this way..... the iPad is NOT a computer. It is an Apple product and works in a very much different way to Microsoft.  It is quirky. Anyway doesn't matter  as you can lean over or make the pc lean over. LOL Just one of those things a nerd could tell ya. I just live with it

Good on you cookie 1.

Go to settings, general, software update.

Be sure to sync it all with your computer too if you use the computer.  If you have not synced or updated in a while it may take a few hours . I know Of someone  who took many hours to update. If you keep yours updated frequently it won't take long. Mine took a few minutes and Dh's took 4 hours.

Everyone with an iPhone and iPod should update as well.

The iPad one will not update a lot of stuff. Judy Christmas is coming.

I love Siri and can ask her  lots of stuff including where is the nearest pizza shop. Siri will search the web for you and you can dictate memos and emails  to her.  All new for the iPad.  I really want an iPhone.  I hope Ted loses our  Nanna phone or maybe drops it .

Siri can you finish this?  Well maybe she cannot do everything.

OK CP here is the way I post photos on tapatalk.

1. open the tapatalk app.
2. Click the little forum thing on the bottom and select the bit you want to post in. eg chit chat.3.
3. Select where you want to post. eg ipad tips and tricks.
4.When it opens click to write a reply.
5.Type in your message and half way down on the right (above the key board you will see a camera and other stuff.
6. Tap that and it opens up a viewfinder thing.
7. Take your photo. Say of a coffee cup and it will take the photo and say 'use'.
8. Tap that and it will have the photo saying 'upload'.
( Tap that and it will give you a size. I select small.
10. The link to the photo will be with your message.
11. Tap send and hey presto it is there.

These seems long but is very easy to do.
The photo from the ipad beat me!!!!

Yup cookie good one if you want to take a photo on  the spot and not  save it to your camera roll.

When you have hundreds and maybe a thousand. Photos it saves scrolling to find the one you want.

A good way to cut down on searching for photos is to organise them into albums . I have lots of albums such as food photos, family photos, clip art  etc.

Nah, the part where you tap "use" and "upload" I only get the option of uploading to "tapatalk hosted". I checked and I'm using the paid version, so I'm not sure why there is a difference. It would be great to be able to make my photos smaller

I have never been able to make the pics smaller from the iPad.

In any case it is no big deal.

If you want to fuss about you can re size from the computer but why bother?

I'm hoping someone can help me. I was chatting to the lady over the way here at Koorarawalya (as one does) and she has a tmx. So we were best buddies immediately. She was telling me you can get an app that you can write your journal and it will incorporate your photos. She just popped over to tell me it was iPhone.  (the app name). I have looked and can't work out which one it may be. Does anyone know anymore please?  :)

"Momento" is a really popular iOS journal. I remember reading about it in the newspaper and I looked it up but never downloaded it does look good though. And exactly what you are looking for.

I have just learnt a tip from my daughter.
I've found it frustrating when typing on the iPad and I need to go back and correct an error, particularly if only one letter in a word needs correcting. It is really hard to position the cursor in the exact spot that you want, so that you can make the correction. If you hold your finger over the word, a circle will come up that magnifies the area. You can then move your finger to the left or the right, without taking it off the iPad, until you have found the exact spot you want. At this point, you take your finger off the ipad and make the correction. Voila!

Good to hear CP, I need something that will work with me (what needs to be iPad as that is what I have around most / my iPhone), I have an ever growing Note page which has links to recipes that I want to cook or have cooked. I rarely take the time to go on the Mac, crack open yummy soup, save the recipes, then manually transfer them to the iPad app - too much hassle.

I think the only thing I dislike is that it's €4 for iPad app and €4 for iPhone. (Not overly caring about the Mac app, though I might pick that up at some point - at present my Mac is for programming, book reviewing /editing, gaming or browsing occasionally and I'm not really doing much of any of those at the moment)

I have just bought an Apple TV. Unbelievable. Now I can use my iPad on my TV screen. It mirrors everything I can do on my iPad plus I can download stuff to my TV like movies TV shows and my DH entire library of classical music can now be played on the TV.

Only $128 including the HDMI cable.

Judy compared to other tech it's tiny. It's jokingly referred to as a hockey puck.

On the attached photo it's beside my fist which isn't that big (I'm 6ft but not a hefty or strong person). Out the back are 4 cables which let to right are:

Network cable: isn't required if you have wifi
Optical Audio Cable: isn't required, only if you want audio to be handled by a hifi
HDMI : required for connecting to TV. Amazon's Basics cable was the cheapest I could find (cable handles both picture and audio)
Power: required

It's a simple device and useful enough without an iOS device (playing iTunes Store videos, Vimeo, YouTube, playing music from your computer) but with an iPad or iPhone you can use AirPlay to show the devices screen on your Telly (either as a pure mirror function and showing on both device and Telly, or basically projecting a version of the device's content to the TV scaled properly which is useful for streaming video, or last but not least for displaying different content on both device and TV say like a quiz game or scrabble) or to play music via your Telly/Hifi.

My daily use for the Apple TV is streaming music to my Hifi. I have a Mac upstairs with all of my music library on it, it is set to use the AppleTV as a speaker. I then use the iPad or iPhone & Apple's Remote app to chose the music I want to hear (you don't need to have the TV on) or for choosing a video to watch (the TV needs to be on for it to start due to DRM (Digital Rights Management) built into the HDMI spec).

Otherwise I use it to stream other videos from my Mac via the iPad to the Apple TV. It isn't as complicated as it sounds, basically you are watching the video on the iPad but using AirPlay to push it to the AppleTV. I occasionally game with Real Racing 2, use AirPlay to push photos I've taken on the iPhone or videos to the TV for everyone to see.

It is as  Rob describes but to keep,it simple for some of us it basically mirrors your iPad on the screen. Mine is set up with just the HDMI cable which goes from the 'hockey  puck ' to the HDMI  plug at the back or side of  TV which must support  HDMI .  I downloaded Apple Remote app . This adds  to your phone / iPad a symbol  which is a rectangle with a triangle poking up into the rectangle from the bottom on the strip along the bottom of you iPad .

When you double tap the home button the strip,is exposed. You then slide it to the right. This brings in to view the audio, volume view with a Musical note symbol I'm the right. You will then see the rectangle with arrow which symbolises the TV with mirroring. Tap that symbol and you will get the iPad on your TV screen.

Mine it set up with by way of wifi. It can also be set up from your Ethernet  which requires a telephone cable from your Ethernet box to the hockey puck but it would have to be within reach.

DH has several hundred Classical Music CD's  which he downloaded to his computer over several months. He then added them to,his classic IPod. Since the music is in his computer I can wifi it to the TV via the Apple TV  where it can play the music. Also all the Album covers and all the details float across the screen.

If I can set this up then any one can.it took me all of Tenina the ThermoMixtress minutes to figure the basics. It may take me years to actually figure out all it can do.

I can now download a movie from iTunes to see on TV instead of the iPad. I can use my iBBC to watch everything available on the BBC app which I paid $79 for a year.  Are you paying attention ACHOOKWOMAN!  This is a real bonus if you love all the stuff which is available on that free/paid app.

For some fun download the free app Shzam.  Aim your iPhone/iPad at any music and it will tell you what it is.  Really it does. That little bit of music playin in an ad on TV driving you nuts? You have heard if but don't know what it is.Shzam will tell you.

DH tried to trick it by pulling out a really obscure piece of music rarely played. He had a CD he got years ago and is now unavailable. He put it on the player and within 20 seconds Shzam had told the iPad what it was and showed the cover of the Album. Good fun.

Show your kids how cool you are when they are playing their crap on the radio or  iPod by aiming  at the music and telling them what they are listening and who it is.  Funny as.

Having an iPad 3 I can't really justify it but I want and iPad 3S. It's one of those subtle admissions that the 3 wasn't quite ready for release in March (the display is amazing but occasionally the device feels under powered and does get a tough too hot).

Maybe I can sell the 3 and get the 3S ... And then die as the missus clubs me round the noggin.

Have yet to see the event stream as I'm on holiday in the UK ATM, and the Internet available to me is rather poor.

No no.

When you are seeing a pic or anything  when using the Internet. Just tap on the pic and a window will open asking you to save. Tap that and it will save to your camera roll.

You do not use Tapatalk to save photos.

Ok go anywhere there is a pic on this forum and see an image to save. OR

Go to google and google birthday clip art. Tap images. Choose. Pic and save. Close it up.

Go to Tapatalk  choose a thread . Make. Comment then add from Camera Roll. You will find a pic there. Tap ,hosted upload.

Well I have had a couple of glasses of so maybe not clear but cookie and chookie know how too.

It was not so much a MUST have  as a useful want. I figure I have worked hard all my life and sacrificed enough in the past. Up here there is not a lot  to do Or spend money on. We can't travel much because of the DOGS and I do enjoy my iPad. I love being in touch  with my friends right here, my pals all over Australia And overseas and my family here and there. I like being spontaneous and taking random pics  that tickle my fancy and sharing these times when they happen. The iPad is quite heavy and cumbersome so.........

And it will be here at the end of November.

There is nothing new about it just smaller. It keeps my mind active. I can be transported to any where I like. I can read the NY Times  and the Guardian. I can watch Lark Rise to Candelford or old Lucille Ball TV,shows . I can research things of interest  and write a letter to my mother.
And I can do all of it easily from anywhere I like.

Best of all it is fun.

Gert

My kids know when I buy the latest gizmo that its because "you are just a tech head mum". Not that I am super computer literate but I do love my gadgets. Why not! We all have our foibles, and it doesn't hurt anyone.

Its great cos you teach us, we can point something out to you, and then we can pass on knowledge to each other. DD24 who you met at the retreat wants to buy either an iPad or a mini for when she goes to the US on Boxing Day. It will be interesting to know what you reckon whether to go the bigger one or the smaller. I can see the smaller being more handy in terms of handbag size and posting pics directly onto Facebook.
Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: tarasis on October 26, 2012, 05:49:29 pm
I'd be curious about the Mini but my wife is dead set against that, however she seems more amenable to an iPad 4 (she'd get my 3, I'd get 4 and we'd sell older iPad we have).

However as on holiday I missed the pre-order window for next Friday, now it's for two weeks.

Like CP63 I'm a gadget nut (generally Apple) so it's really hard to resist new ones.
Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on October 26, 2012, 09:49:10 pm
I mainly want the mini Rob so it fits in my handbag easily. I don't use my iPhone at all. It is just an emergency thing . I do however use my iPad ALL THE TIME  and it is heavy and sometimes cumbersome. I also have to have my Kindle at all times so with three devices the weight adds up. I figure the mini  will replace the Kindle when I am out . I prefer messaging on the iPad to texting on the phone.  It is great for keeping in touch with email ( formally pen ) pals when out. It is fun to actually show and tell than write and describe.

Whe I was looking at the Apple TV I was able to message a photo home to DH and show him the cable connector  and ask if we had one already before buying a new one.  It is handy for things like that.  It is cheaper to use  the 3G on the iPad than the 3G on the phone.

Where you have  no wireless you are likely to have 3G but I notice some cafes are advertising free wireless. I Cairns the council, are setting up a wireless area in the City

When DH needs a thing a ma jig at the hardware he can take a photo here and show at the store just what he is looking for. If he is about to take something apart he takes a photo first so can put it back the right way. This has proved very  useful.  Note this.....when removing patterned curved pavers take a picture first!!! It will  save hours and angst. And your DW telling you she told you so.

If you want a special cut of meat for a recipe take a pic to show, the butcher.

Wen travelling the iPad is invaluable.  Taking  photos and wee VDO's in remote places can endear you to the locals. A crowd may gather and you can make instant friends. In a tiny village in Cambodia I was able to take a family  photo and immediately email it to the family VIA a local shop who printed the pic for them. Their  very first pic of themselves ever. How valuable is that?

A VDO of a woman skinning rats in a market is a treasure. Is it not?

Yup I can't wait for the  mini. I think the difference in the 3 and 4 is probably just the improved Retina display which will be nice but no need for an upgrade just yet as far as I am concerned.  As more app developers  abandon Adobe flash for I products and get with the program it annoys me less that I devices do not support flash.

When stuck in Ho Chi Min City with no way out on one airline I was able to book another instantly without leaving my bar stool!

The uses for and the portability of the iPad amaze me and I love Siri. She an take me anywhere without me lifting a finger.

Judy have you ever been in a hardware store and tried to buy a thingy to repair your  what's it?  Or into Spotlight store trying to explain the curtain thingy to teenager? Or into a lighting shop to match a lamp from ten years  ago?  Take a pic on the iPad first as it is big enough to show. Or a VDO of the place in the garden you want to plant a tree  when shopping at a nursery. Not sure of the height ? Take a pic. No more drawing pics for DH so he can shop for something.

Find something on line you want to buy locally? Take a screen shot to show or  better yet open up your iPad and take the sales person to the web site. Maybe they can order it in.

Endless practical uses and I am only thinking of the things I want to do with it. With children well ................if only iPads were available then. Today's child will never know what it is like to live without instant information. They  will never have to walk in the dark  snow covered streets to the library to find out who was Genghis Khan. Hell  they probably don't even teach that these days.

No more walking home from the shop with the wrong  loaf of bread for mum only to trudge back in the snow to return it and find out the last of Mum's bread had been sold.  No ice cream for me that night.

I hate snow but I love iPads.

You can let your teenage daughter shop for her  formal dress while you are at work assured that she will message/email  a photo first so you can nix the black see through strapless backless $600 number  she is now wearing in the shop.

The best is for comparative shopping. Take a pic in Retrovision to show the guy at The Good Guys and get the cheaper price. The 12 year old shop assistant  in Hardly Normals can now see what the hell the old fart is talking about when she says she wants  the cleaning tablets for  her coffee machine.

Want to match a colour or coordinate the  doona cover on the bed. No problem.

I need more coffee.

Well the cover arrives tomorrow hopefully so at least we can see the size of it but the mini does not arrive until  the end of November because I wanted the 3G capable with wifi.  The. I will have to buy a nano SIM card from Telstra.

This is terrible Gert, I checked out the ipad mini site and ebay to check out how much my changeover cost will be. It's having to buy the extra's that add to the overall cost. With your SIM, when I was in the city last week i saw a notice in a shop window that they cut micro sims down to fit the new iphone 5 which i believe is that same size as the ipad mini, it might be worth investigating if you still have a lot of data left.

I did think about that but I will have only two months left on my iPad 3 sim. Still have lots of Data but the year runs out in Jan.

I get  1 GByte a month on my iPhone but will use more on my mini perhaps. Or I could tether the mini to the iPhone and use   that.

Still if I can get 12GB for $150 for the year then that is pretty cheap as I do use it a lot  when out of wifi reach.

Here is another tip.

When posting on the forum using your iPad or iPhone  start the post then tap Post after a few words. Then go back and tap modify to finish your post.

This will avoid accidentally deleting before you post. I have done that  several times and lost some bigger postings which is a in the butt to re type everything.

It's not letting me in with my password and now it's been locked for 12 hours  :(

I never use my yahoo account for that reason.  Same with hotmail. Not secure it seems to me . So far so good with gmail and BigPond. I have a few email addy's I cannot remember what they are or the passwords!

H that is what made me post that tip. I think I posted it somewhere before. It is handy for the iPad for sure.

No, no point we both have iPhones (with contracts for a year and two years) and can do tethering if we need to so not worth the extra bucks. Better to use those to increase capacity.

Fair enough. Foe  me the  pre paid 3G on the iPad is cheaper than using my iPhone.  I use my iPad far more than the phone..

Wonder I do not know  what you mean by colour pallette.  I only know I received a  message about an update for the Tapatalk from Apple so I did it. They have added a lot of new features including a Gallery.  The look is different and the  icon has changed. When was the last time you updated all your apps Wonder?  You should do it frequently as there are so many changes and apps are being changed for the mini iPad as well.

If we weren't tied contract wise then it would be. Awkward as missus balks at coat of iPhone without contract so we end up perpetually tied to T-Mobile. I barely phone on my iPhone, it's my camera, music player and data device.

Very strange mine isn't showing up as needing an update and I haven't noticed any difference.

I'm thinking there might be a problem because I always have apps awaiting updating due to my ipad being connected to two other accounts and not knowing the passwords, so I update my own regularly but they only do there's every few months when they want to use my ipad, but there is nothing showing as requiring update - very strange.

Jeniwa try deleting them from you computer .

Wonder you should sync  your devices more frequently to avoid backlog.

Gert, I haven't upgraded to IOS 6 yet but will be over the weekend, I friend had trouble accessing the Utube app plus  a few other problems when he upgraded so I wanted to wait until I had time in case I have problems. I normally synch at least once a week because I have the majority of family photos on both my iPad and the Mac and like to ensure they stay up to date and there is less risk of loosing anything. The problem I have is that the kids will sometimes use my ipad to purchase games under either DH or DD's itunes accounts rather then getting their own ipads out (because they are rarely charged) and because I've never bother to get their passwords when i synch or update I always have a few that can't be updated, I'm not fussed in them because they are generally apps I don't use, but it does mean I always have a message indicating I have apps requiring an update.

Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks

One plus with iOS 6 is that the AppStore is a tiny bit more clever and now passwords arent required to update apps (thank the maker). though they may have to have signed in once to the other accounts (even across other stores. I use DE, UK & US)

Also Wonder, you will lose the YouTube app that was on the device but Google have a new one in the AppStore (at least in most app stores, not currently in the DE store)

I know for me I can't go down to 32GB, it's too cramped, our first iPad was 64GB, then I got the iPad 2 with 32GB and was always fretting for space and deleting things I didn't want to, so when I was given the money to get an iPad 3 (long story) I got the 64GB version.

It is messy Gretch and I'm also on st Tom to use their own but it's amazing what I find on my iPad some days when I haven't been around! They prefer mine because it has 3G so they can go outintothe back yard and sty connected. It does have one advantages - DD who is 17 forgot to ign out of Facebook quite a few months ago and has or gotten all about it, we have been able to find out lots of things shroud prefer us not to know, and she just thinks we are extremely smart!, :-))

Cp there is no way she would have me as a friend, this is all be stealth. She also only speaks to people via private messaging rather than on the actual facebook pages, This way I can periodically check up on them particularly when they are organizing parties etc. and at least feel as though I have an idea of what is going on. Al her friends think I have a sixth sense and am extremely smart - if they only knew how I know it all  ;D ;D ;D

Gert it does amaze me what some of the kids will put on Facebook and also how naive they are about the long term consequences.

I can never make direct mention of what I've seen because it would give the game away, anything I see discussed I have to weave into conversation as though I've come up with it on my own. A few times I thought I had gone to far but fortunately was able to cover it up. 17 year olds aren't as clever as they think they are, and parents are a lot more clever and devious than what the 17 year olds think we are!

Screen shots are the way to go. Then sort them into albums Cookie .

Also, when ther is an interesting comment you want to send someone  take a screen shot and just mail that. Then they do not have to wade through a whole, page or thread.

I LOVE SCREEN SHOTS!

Nope it has not. The first I will hear will be that it is now engraved and I am unable to cancel. Then comes the notice that it has been dispatched with a tracking number. Then the game begins with it travelling all around  the world until it gets here!

I am not expecting a notice  until early Dec. I think there has been some delay. I just hope that Telstra is ready to roll, with the tiny SIM cards they require. I do not  want to tether it with the phone as I think it will be cheaper to use the3G on the iPad.

You will be the first to know whe I get the email from Apple.

Apple products arn not allowed  to be discounted. Occasionally JB Hi FI or Myer might have a 10% discount but not often.

The mini iPad for that price would be only  16 GB with wi fi only. I bought the 64  GB with wifi and 3G

Does your broadband DSL modem at home for your PC have wifi built in ?
Otherwise, you may be able to tether your iPad to your iPhone. I often do this with my iPhone 4 if I'm not at home. You should investigate if your iPhone 3 is capable of tethering.

This is how I put a link in to a recipe using Tapatalk.
1. Using safari or your usual web browser, open the thread with the recipe that you want to link to, and in the web address box, hold your finger down so that you can "select all" and then "copy"
2. Open Tapatalk and open the thread that you want to put the link into
3. Press on the flower icon that is in the bottom right corner of your screen, slightly greyed out.
4. Three options will come up, so click on URL link, and a pop up box to insert a link will appear with "http://". Backspace to delete this, and then hold your finger down, and the option to "paste" will appear. Paste the link, and press OK to bring you back to the "Reply to Topic" page

This is how I add an existing photo to a thread using Tapatalk:
1. Click on "Reply to Topic" and type your reply.
2. When you want to add a photo, click on the icon in the bottom righthand corner of your screen that is between the camera icon and the bird icon. It looks like a mountain with a moon or sun in the sky.
3. A pop up box will appear in the bottom right hand corner called "photos"  with a number of options. Click on the option where your photo is stored. Mine are usually in the photo roll.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/25/nu4y6a8u.jpg)
4. Tap on the photo that you want to upload.
5. Click on the upload button
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/25/y8e8a6yz.jpg)
6 Another popup box will appear giving you 3 options for photo sizes. I usually choose the small option, but here, I having been choosing the medium option.
7. That's it, but you won't be able to see the photos in your reply until you have pressed the send button.

Well done ES..

Looking for some of guru Gerts pearls of wisdom please. I have an iPhone 3 with Internet and a pc with broadband. I want an iPad for Christmas but do not want to purchase another Internet package. Can the iPad use my broadband or iPhone Internet using cable or other thingy? I don't want to change my broadband to wifi if I can avoid it.

I am pretty sure you can tether your iPhone 3 but just google it and someone will tell you.

To use your iPad you with no wi fi you will have to cable it to you PC orphoe if posible which defeats the purpose  of making it mobile.

Setting up wifi at home is as easy as buying a cheap wifi device like a D link and connecting it to you ADSL modem. Even I could do it. I think it cost me about $80. Without wifi you will have to have 3G and if you tether it to your phone it will cost a lot if you download, upload and use your iPad for surfing the Internet.

If you purchase a micro SIM card for whatever price it is  now you will get 12 GBytes of data  in one year.  I paid $150  for 12 months in Jan. I still have $92. In credit and I use it whenever I am not connected to wi fi. A bit of a waste but  I have never run out or worried about it.

If you do not have wifi at home I would consider it. It has nothing to do with your broadband and changing plans. It is just an enabler for using  wi if devices in the house.  You can enable your iPad to print. from any location if you  also have an air printer.

Your iPad will come with wifi anyway so you can use it in places that have wifi like McDonalds  for free.

I am certainly no guru and not a tech head. I am totally self taught. There are many websites that are more helpful than I am including Apple. If you can download the apps to your iPhone I mentioned earlier they will give you all the info you need.  Go to reply # 206 in this thread.

I refer to,these apps frequently because I keep forgetting.

If you get a SIM card for you iPad it will have a unique number and you will be able to,face time and message to other iPhones for nix.

I know Judy had some problems using her iPad 1. I was trying to help her but did not understand that she did not have wi fi either  so what i was telling her was of no use so we were both stumped until someone came to her rescue.

I just figured that everyone has wi fi these days. Costs nothing to use and is cheap to buy the device.

It is like the Apple TV. I did not understand it until I researched it and found that for $99 I could do everything on my iPad  while using the TV for the screen. So easy and so cheap I wonder why everyone doesn't have it.

Hope that helps but I am sure others have more knowledge. Mr Google is my best friend .

Gert

When I changed providers Gretchen, I thought I did end up with a wi-fi thingy.  I have no idea what I am doing but as long as I can access the forum when I have problems with my computer or when I am out, for now it will have to do.  There was a 1 day iPad course a while back but I can't get away all day to go to something like this.  I have to physically be shown what to do and then do it myself - reading about it is no good as I don't understand the jargon.

I saw that fridge thingy in the Mac shop.

If you are really interested and you have the time there are people on you tube who spend their life showing how to do stuff on the iPad. I don't have the patience for it but if you have a how to question you can be sure that 1.2 million people will be able to show you exactly HOW to do It. I am more of a tap and hope sort of person.

Judy that  is the same wi fi thingy I have by the look of it.

I have no idea how any of it works and like you say Judy the  jargon is like a secret society.  I decided years ago to just accept that it works and I do not care to know how it works. I am more interested In How I can get the most  out of it for the least amount of money.

Telstra is like a whole 'Nother world. Dealing with them is learning how to workout dealing with people from a different planet. No one person the the whole of Telstra knows what another person working for Telstra is doing. No departments interact and never let it be said the Bangaladish person is no less informed than the person in the Phillipines . Then the Indian guy will decry, what the Pakistani guy  says and the barely English speaking  manager in Melbourne will lie about what the almost English speaking guy in Sydney says.

You have to love it. Multiculturalism at it's best with Telstra. And then there  are the store staff. Some are are in the loop and others aren't allowed into the loop but neither wants you to know which they are and they pretend not to know each other as well. You can have hours of fun for free in a Telstra shop. They employ a lot of uni students and believe me you can have the most fun with them if you are my age because they try to bamboozle you first  With how much they know avout nothing. When they realise you are not stupid they try to bamboozle you with bull dust  and when that doesn't work the give up poor things and send you to the manager. The manager has no time and they send you on line and so it starts all, over again.  The secret then is to gather  all the names you have spoken to, put it in print to the local manager who is unknown to anyone but a few of us in the top secret loop. Getting the local manager's name and number is a game in itself.

I recently had a three hour conversation with a Telstra guy  on my mobile. He gave me a credit of $20 on my bill for the call and reduced my Internet bill by $20 a month for ever.

I cannot even begin to imagine the crapola we will hear about the NBN rollout.

Judy, I know it's hard for you to get out and I'm not sure if there is an apple store near you but they run some great free sessions that go for an hour. When the iPad 1 first came out I did a class at our store and it was great. The details of the classes are on their website.

I wish we had a proper Apple shop in Cairns. The one I saw  in Perth was awesome. I would do any Mac classes.

Judy I know the iPad one does not  have a camera but can you save photos on it and then use Tapatalk or I Instagram  if needs be? Mot that you need it because you are great with your computer and camera.

Really just wondering if on the iPad1 if  one could email a photo and save it to photos or maybe it does not  have  a photo app. Also it may not be 3G capable.

I may as well google it.  ;D

Oh Gert your description of Telstra was oh so true. I remember not so long ago going round the world with them. Each person I spoke to I noted their name and where they were and the local time. When (after about an hour or so) I came back to Australia I was able to say 'well I have spoken to these people and got no where.'
It annoyed me at first but then I decided I would just play 'round the world 'with them. I even spoke to someone in America on that trip. The problem was n't sorted out either. I love how they have the review at the end of the trip conversation.
'Were we able to help you? Please answer yes, no,  not sure yet!'

I don't know that we have an apple store here,  I like the one in Sydney though.  Guess I would have to go into a Telstra store and I don't like my chances there.  No time anyway so everything is on hold at the moment and I cannot spend hours on a phone either.

Judy, you can use the internet on your iPhone with your iPad. You use something called Personal Hotspot.

Go into the settings on your iPhone and choose it. You will be given a password. Go into the settings on your iPad and choose Wi-Fi. Your iPhone will come up in the list. Put in the password and away you go!

As long as you have a NextG network available, you'll be able to get the internet on your iPad using your iPhone as a personal hotspot.

For anyone who is thinking of getting an iPad. It is not necessary to get one with wifi built it because if you have an iPhone with data you can " tether" your iPad to it or you can get a wireless thingy to use anywhere, sorry don't know all the technical terms but I know I saved about $150 by getting iPad without the built in wifi.  there are so many places now that have free wifi also which is great.  If you can't get to an apple store You Tube is the place to go for demo videos.

Me too GHM, but just be wary when you tether that you really drain your phone battery doing it (but it is very handy specially if you have wifi in most scenarios)

Greyhoundmum I did not know you could buy an iPad without wi fi. I thought they all had wifi but not all had  3G and that is why the one with 3G is more expensive.

For me I definitely need both wifi and 3G. Without wi fi I would not be able to use mine in bed to read the forum in the morning!

Did you get your no wi fi  3G only iPad in the States.

MJ, I don't have an iPhone - my granny phone is suitable for my needs.

Glad to see others get confused with wifi etc, all these technical terms leave me for dead.

Katie since I changed over to Bigpond, I can't update apps on the iPad , can't even log into iTunes and still can't receive emails on it either.  I downloaded some apps onto the computer but they won't sync (is that the word) to the iPad. I was happy just to be able to access the forum but if the computer goes down, I'd be up the creek as far as hearing from my friends by private email.  It doesn't matter what anyone tells me to do, it is all too confusing for me.  I've got correspondence back from iTunes telling me how to reset my password, did that and it still doesn't accept it so I've just given up.  I know your DH works hard and everyone wants his advice on computers etc so I haven't wanted to bother him with my problems.  I haven't been into Telstra at West Lakes for advice as I'm sure they would tell me I have to do it online and that doesn't work for me.  Rather than stress myself out when I don't need anymore problems in my life, I have chosen to just let it ride and be content with at least being able to access the forum when I'm out or in bed.

Gert my udnerstanding is that only happens if you ordered early on, if you order now you won't get it until after the stores get them but you are at least guaranteed one whereas they could sell out in store.

I was on the Whirlpool forums and it looks like delivery is going to be the 29th for those who ordered early but if you purchase now it's at least a 2 week wait.

Thanks Tarasis I was confused by that as what would be the point of an iPad without wi fi.

Are you buying the new one with retina display  or the mini?

I had the new Retina for a time but I had an issue with the screen (light bleed / uneven colour) so it was returned and rather than get another one the missus bought a Mini for herself for Xmas. Its currently upstairs and I am kind of allowed to use it till its wrapped.

It is a nice device, the weight difference is incredible and it works well. Some things do look a little small and slightly blurry (or pixelated) but you only really notice that if coming from a Retina device. (My wife doesn't really see much difference between the screen of an iPad 2 & 3 - which I find shocking) The stereo speakers on the mini are nice as well, it sounds that bit better than the iPad 3 & 4

Ultimately both the iPad 3/4 & the Mini are good devices and I can see using both (iPad 4 more for videos, web browsing, gaming. Mini for reading, quick videos, music, general usage) if I can get away with it.

We sold off our iPad 1 the other day for about €175 which wasn't too bad, sad to see it go though as it was the beginning of a new era of computing.

All interesting Tarasis. Glad your DW got the mini. shame on you for using it! LOL not much point in wrapping it now.

Interesting about the retina  display. I was tossing up but  the mini will be great in the handbag. In fact I already bought a mini friendly one. I just hope the Telstra shop has the right mini sim for it when it get's here.

I think I am addicted to my iPad . Have hardly used  my new iPhone  and have only had to charge it once since October.

If Apple says it will arrive in Monday it will arrive on Monday.  Last time I saw the parcel post driver enter the estate so when he came by my house I was waiting out the front. He had a load full of IPads to be delivered all over Cairns! He laughs ever time he delivers something here.

Once he delivered a toaster from POK. The next day he delivered a toaster from POK! I had ordered it for me for my birthday and unbeknownst to me my DH had ordered the same  thing a day later.  The other day when  I got my POK parcel he asked if it was another toaster. On Monday he will say "not another iPad”.

Love my delivery man.

He probably loves you too Gretch for keeping him in a job. With the Internet people are writing less letters but get more parcels from online shopping. At least your DH knows what you want and to shop from your fave shop. Mine just shrugs and says he can't buy anything cos I'm so fussy (I am to a point, cos a couple of times he's bought an item of clothing or piece of jewellery that is so not me that it would never be worn and that's a waste of money not to exchange it (yes, I know its the thought))

There's a discussion on another thread about photos and I'm trying to change my photo size.

I found this post but my tapatalk doesn't look like this.  I have tapatalk HD so I don't know if that makes a difference. I've checked and the app is up to date.
When I upload photos, this is what it looks like
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/29/emure8em.jpg)
I don't get the icons that Katie gets and I don't get an option to change the picture size.

Any suggestions?

I just downloaded the free version and guess what?. The screen did show up.

But the free version allows you to up load only 30 photos.

So mystery solved.  Have uploaded 27 photos from the free version so when . I reach 30 we will see what happens.  I must have had just the free version from the beginning before I bought the HD?

Thanks ES and Chrissa. There is always an explanation.

Ok. So I go to iTunes to download the free version.  Guess what.  No free version there.  There's a $2.99 version and the HD version which I already have.

Grrr.   I'm all geeked out for now ;D

I'm going to work.  It will be more fun that trying to work this out.

PS. Gert in my searches I saw mention that when you reach then 30 photo limit, you have to purchase a hosting app for the photos

I had the free one and I'm sure when I got to the 30 photos (surprisingly quickly) I had to purchase the app, it wasn't a lot of money from memory. Mine works the same as in the pictures.

Judy fantastic that Katie's DH was able to work it out for you, it's so frustrating when you know it's not working properly and you can't figure out why.

ES - that's very exciting, the screen quality is fantastic on the 4's.

I'm not seeing it free either. AppShopper is a useful site for tracking apps to see when they drop in price

http://appshopper.com/search/?cat=&platform=all&device=all&sort=rel&dir=asc&search=tapatalk

So for instance Tapatalk HD hasn't had a price drop at all, but Tapatalk non HD recently dropped to €0.89 from its normal €2,69 unfortunately I failed to grab it at the time.

Something like that Gretchen, I had no idea why I couldn't send or receive emails with my bigpond a/c or why my apps wouldn't upgrade but within a few seconds he had my email sorted and my apps began upgrading (dozens of them  :D :D).  He just looked at some number on the back of the modem, wifi thingy and went from there - very quickly  :o  He's also put all the games into little boxes to tidy it up.

Yes Gretchen and if I'm home it automatically cuts out the 3G and uses my wi-fi - I think that's how the story goes and I'm using the right terminology  :D :D  You gave me that advice right at the beginning but it wouldn't happen for me.  I am currently disabling email notification on heaps of forum topics in a bid to reduce my incoming emails on both the computer and the iPad.  Life is just a little hectic here at the moment  :-))

Gert, I can't wait to hear what you think about the iPad mini. I decided on the full size 4 because I mostly use it at home, and if I'm out, I just used my iPhone.however, there was considerable debate in our house about it :)

Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: EmeraldSue on November 29, 2012, 10:58:59 am
Yes, I will put a protector on the screen soon. It makes me laugh though as it reminds me of when I first got my iPhone and left the protective film on it. I couldn't understand why I couldn't hear anyone on the telephone very well   I thought that there was something wrong with the phone. DH eventually pointed out to me that the film was covering the microphone. Once I removed it, the phone worked perfectly!
Once I realised this, I felt like dyeing my hair blonde ;D ;D ;D

DD insisted I have a screen protector for  mine and I'm glad now as I have to fight DH for it and he often has grease ingrained on his fingers. It's easy to wipe over. I used to love reading the ipad in front of tv at night. Now if I pause DH has grabbed it. I don't want to ask for it back as he has only just learned to use it. :'( :'(

I hope I finally have my mini sorted. This morning I had a 3g micro sim fitted and they just transferred the account to the mini from my other iPad so that was a good quick service at the Telstra shop.

I will enjoy reading on it as well because it is so light.

I'm sure it's a dud cover, we have the smart covers on our full size iPads and never had a problem. This one doesn't sit quite flat on the surface of the iPad. I'll leave it a few days and see if it flattens out, if not I'll take it back and get them to have a look. It's a great size and I really like using it, so light and much more portable than the full size ones. I still prefer the feel of the kindle for reading because it fits perfectly with the size of my hand so can't see it replacing the kindle. Will hopefully get to the Telstra shop today to swap over the sim but I have a portable wifi device I can use as an interim measure so not in a great hurry to get that sorted.

Gert, Kimmy - I hadn't even thought of putting it on here. I'll have a look at prices on ebay over the next few days and let you know.

I'm loving the mini MJ, the writing etc doens't actually seem much smaller but it's so much lighter and more portable. I rarely took my iPad when I was going out except if I knew I was going to having some waiting around, now as soon as sort out a sleeve case for it I'll be taking it everywhere. It's slightly too big for the sleeve I have for my kindle which is a shame because it would be perfect.

Rainbow my DH is the person in the world who hated technology the most. He is really agro about it. However after taking the iPad to South Australia with us, and he saw what it could do, and so easily, he now loves them. In fact I often have to battle him for it.
They are absolutely perfect for travelling and I adore sitting on the lounge checking the forum.
You will love it.

Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on December 29, 2012, 07:44:36 am
It is all about the size and where you are using it .  I love them both.  The iPad is perfect for anywhere in the house and pool but heavy and cumbersome to travel with on a plane.

I love the mini to bits for putting In my handbag . I take it everywhere. Of course I am addicted and have a SIM card with 3G in it  as wifi so I can use it  all the time. It will be great for travelling by plane.

If I were using it for travelling by car I would get a SIM  for the bigger one as well just because it  has the bigger keyboard

I think they compliment each other .

The mini is a good substitute for the. Kindle so I need only carry the mini when  say visiting the doctor or waiting for coffee as I can always read. Now I carry just the mini where I used to carry the iPad and the Kindle.  The mini is great for making audio memos  too. Some friends I send these memos to instead of emails. Ilove that it is not obtrusive for taking pics in a restaurant.  I really am a nutter for the  thing.

Of course I could use my iPhone for all of the above but it is just too small to easily use though it takes good photos.

If you are just using it at home then I say  the iPad  but if you like never to be without it get the mini with 3G .

My  DH at age 83 is. In love with his iPad as well and uses it to watch things on the BBC as well as listening to radio from around the world . He can do his  emails while watching the news.

I bought an Apple TV so we  can watch anything  from the IPad on the  big screen. I can  rent a movie on the iPad and see it on the TV.

I rarely use my  laptop or PC anymore  as I can do anything on the iPad with my downloaded apps including printing  documents. Having said that I sure would like a MacAir!!

Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on December 29, 2012, 08:54:00 am
Before I bought my first Kindle I downloaded the program for PC bought a few books just to see if I liked to read in that format. I did so when  I bought my first Kindle I registered it online and all books downloaded on the computer or the Kindle, arrive nicely at both. Then  I bought another and another Kindle which I registered as Gerts 1, 2,3 Kindle. So my DH. DD automatically get all the books I download.

Then I bought My iPads and they all have Kindle apps . So now I have registered with Amazon  Kindle for  PC,  , 3 Kindles . i used to have my DS and grandchildrens KIndles registered to me as well but they recently registered them to themselves since moving to India. My DD recently bought a mini iPad and has the Kindle app. The Kindle app on the iPads automatically updates VIA wifi or by the PC.

I think it is very generous of Amazon that you can have so many devices  to receive the one book. Just wish we got them as cheaply as the US.

Before you start, either take a photo of eg. yourself or choose which one you'll use from your photos.

1. Click on "Profile" (just under Search at the top)
2. See Modify Profile ... Click on Forum Profile Information
3. Upload my own picture (select the one you'll be using)
4. Save changes.

See how you go ...

Well done rainbow. That is great. You will go crazy taking photos now.

I have really taken to audio memo. Much fun sitting  and talking to,your friends on your  iPad. Then send by email and they can listen and reply at their leisure .

Rainbow don't forget you can message friends with I devices and include photos as well.  My DD just bought the mini and wanted a cover so I went to a shop took a photo, messaged  it to her and she said yes all within a minute or two. Too easy.

Good to download  iPad tips and tricks from the App Store. One free and the other paid and worth whatever it was because you can always refer to it. I use it frequently.

For new iPad owners I recommend two apps  ABC iView  for watching what you missed or ignored on the ABC . Good for when there is nothing on TV. Also  BBC iplayer. The free version gives you some good stuff from the BBC but the subscription  for one year was a great buy as my DH can always find something to watch in bed when he can't sleep. Well he says he can't sleep but I hear snoring!

I can  also recommend the Apple  TV for around $100 for watching anything on your iPad or iPhone  on your normal TV. Easy and neat.

We have been watching some French and Saunders specials which are a lot  of fun.

MF get your photo from your stockpile in IPad ie. your photo Library. (You cannot select a photo that your iPad cannot access ie. that is stored on your camera or PC)
One if the important things to remember is - do not put a mental hurdle up as this is very easy to do. Try it out, and if still no luck PM me your home phone and on Monday when I come back to Perth I can talk over the phone.

We have got Apple TV and it is prob closer to $150 to set up. About $130 for the Apple TV and $20 for the HD thingy cord that most people need. I did a killer uTube walking exercise thingy that went for 45 mins in the lounge room which would be impossible to do just from your computer, and I think its quite good value for money as far as apple goes. I got most of the way thru the installation process before having o call in teenage neighbour. He hit a stumbling block too, but then he asked Siri and then 5 mins we later we were up and running.

In response to a few pages back, I'm with Gert - I use my iPad for about 90% of my computing needs (with some iPhone), and the laptop on the odd occasion (like now). Really it handles all my general needs: reading the web, recipes, watching videos, listening to music, playing games and so on. Beyond wanting a machine to serve up files, to write software on and play the odd intensive game I really don't need a computer these days.

We have an Apple TV too, its either used for renting a movie (from mostly the US store, but also UK & Germany), watching the odd purchased TV program (German or US stores) and streaming TV programs acquired from elsewhere (or ripped from my DVD's) *cough*. For that last one I have a Mac Mini running a program called Serve To Me which serves up videos & music to the iPad app Stream To Me, you can then shunt it over AirPlay to the Apple TV and it works a treat. (Serve To Me works off the filesystem & not iTunes)

For music I have in iTunes (and thats a lot), I use Mediatap on the Mac Mini which interacts with the iTunes Library and shares it to me either over the local network or via the internet (great for my iPhone & when visiting a friend) to an app called Audiotap. (In case anyone points out that iTunes has home sharing in both the Music and Video apps, yes it does but when you have a large library of over 25000 tracks it takes a LONG time to load. Nearly 3 minutes, where Audiotap does it in seconds)

Apologies if the last two paragraphs are over anyone's head.

I can't wait to see what the iPad "5" brings, after feeling the weight of the mini I want the new iPad to weigh that light. (I like the Mini and agree that it is a compliment to the bigger iPad. I think that both have their place in a home, if you can afford them.)

I was going to get Apple TV, does anyone know if I can watch my stuff from BBC iplayer on it?
dont think DH will be too happy though. all tv cabling is concealed in the wall he wont want a lead sticking out from the back of the tv. Not sure if we have one of those cable already in the wall.  do those with Apple TV use a lot?  I am going to get some UK itunes vouchers so i can watch the new Downton Abbey not out in Australia yet.

GHM you do need  one cable.

I use Apple TV especially for BBC Iplayer as I wanted to watch the entire Lark Rise to Candleford . I don't know if it was ever shown in Australia.

Series 3 of Downton Abbey starts soon in Australia.

Im looking forward to Downton. I found a series on BBCiplayer that I had never heard of here called bodies, it is a hospital set drama about an incompetent consultant obstetrician, makes for interesting viewing especially for nurses!

My wife enjoyed that show. Though they (BBC) scupered her watching it as they removed the second season she was watching. (Due to broadcast rights issues, it happens periodically. Another example is Alas Smith and Jones which initially had 4 seasons available here in Germany, but now only seasons 1 & 4)

Interesting. I renewed my 3G on my micro sim for my iPad. It cost $180 for one year for 12 GB but Telstra rolled over the $85 I still had on Last years account.

Amazing.

And on the subject of Telstra , we have not had the Telstra network for 24 hours up here. No phone , no Internet. It is if we were w third world country.  Something happens 1600 kilometres away and Cairns  has no network.

Still small stuff compared to the SE of Queensland but has nothing to do with the floods. So much for a NBN . as if that will happen any time soon!

I have had similar.  Just wait and it seems to go away. ;D

Same, I had that a couple of weeks ago on the iPad. At the same time it wasn't displaying like that on the computer. Weird, but like the others have said it does go away.(hmn, if its like the flu and it eventually goes away I hope it doesn't mean its a virus of some sort  :-\ though Apple is usually better than the others at fielding off viruses)

Have you tried both minimizing the app and re booting your iPad?
More times than not, this will fix most hiccups :)

I've had that more than a few times Alexis, I'm not sure what causes it but it does pass. It's either Safari getting s it's knickers in a twist or its getting passed some bad data and that breaks the rendering.

I have just. Found a new app. It was in today's paper. It is called snaprecipes. It is partnered with Oz Harvest donating 5% of every app sale. It costs $1.99.
You can photograph your recipes from anywhere ( a magazine in the doctors surgery) and file them with notes etc. it is pretty easy to use as I can use it. Now when I want to tear recipes out of magazines I can just photograph them into here.  There are heaps of categories to file the recipes under.
I'm loving it. If I decide later not to keep it I can delete it   ( I think, as I haven't tried to delete any yet)

I am having trouble with the App Store. When I go to download something. Eg the Karen Martini book it tells me I don't have an account for the US one and need to get an account for Australia. I am sure I haven't done anything to the machine except use it up here at Monkey Mia.
Can anyone help me please? In simple language.  ;) :)

I'm the first to admit my total ignorance here.  I'm using an ipad that belongs to my DD.  I have a file of TMX recipes on my PC (word in windows) that I 'd like to transfer/add to the ipad . . is there any way I can do this? ???
Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on May 26, 2013, 10:32:08 pm
If you don't  know  how to use Drop Box or organise PDFfiles then the easiest was is to either email them individually or as a folder. But first go to settings, mail, add account. Put your email address there, set password.  Then go to mail where you will see your email address. You will see your address in INBOXES below that you will see accounts. Open your address  it will slide to mailboxes,  on the top you will see EDIT. Tap edit and  at the bottom you will see ADD  mailbox.  Type  in Thermomix recipes then tap DONE at the top.

Go to your PC  and email the recipes one by one if you have to do it that way.  When they arrive go to Mail tap your message, go to the top and tap edit, you will now see at the bottom Delete, Move, Mark. There is a button next to your message, tap that then tap move . It will side to mailboxes then just tap the mailbox and it will move.

I recommend these three apps for all the help  a novice will need. IPad Secrets- Tips and Tricks. IPad Secrets Vol2 Geekier and IPhone Secrets. All three are the Blue ones. I think they cost but not much and are worth it believe me as they will save you a lot is angst.

I am sure there are others who will explain  other ways to transfer files from your PC  to your iPad but tedious as it may be for a novice to do it one by one it is pretty easy in the end.  There are other programs  and apps you could use like Pages and Quick Office if you want to bother.

No problem. I want everyone to have an iPad because it really is easy  to use and is great for cooks for shopping etc . Always have mine  in case I need a recipe. I find the phone just too small. Yes it is just as easy to use but I love my mini iPad for being able to actually read a recipe.

I will tell ya soon about another absolutely essential thing for your iPad  or tablet or device  or kindle or kobo. Just waiting on the postie and if it is good as I know it will be then oh boy you will want one. Watch this space.

Is it the stand thingy from SuperKitchenMachine? (Ya killin me Gretch  ;D) I can see myself needing one of those when I get back. I love my mini, it recharges quicker than the ipad3 and its very light & portable for popping in a handbag. The iP3 is great for when you need a bigger screen, and I have a net book which is great for normal PC work and a good backup for me in my business.

Yes you are right . I ordered them as soon as I saw them in Helene's shop ( I think it was the first day because nobody had mentioned them yet…. I  wanted to be the first to have one in Australia so I kept mum about it .)… I ordered some for myself and think  they will arrive in the next few days. Maybe today. I wanted this Kribbitt so bad so PM'd Helene to ask if they were as good as and she said it was the very best she had ever seen. I have bought two hopeless useless stands in the past and this one looks amazing.

This is a brand new product just invented so no one will know about it. It looks so versatile and can be used for every device. I also, like that it is a local product in Canada made by a known inventor and not a Chinese knockoff with crap manufacturing. This guy makes each one himself and he made it for his children so it must be solid and something young and old can use easily. It is flexible so you would be able to type at your best angle plus it does not move when you type due to the non something or other rubber like stuff covering the hard wire something. Anyway when I get my three I will but a pic here.  If it is as good as then I will order two more for gifts because everyone I know with a iPad, iPad mini or  reader will want it so if I were you I would order two now so you have it when you get home.

Yes the mini recharges much faster and is great for the handbag for travelling and for shopping when you are out. Easier to type on than the phone but I love my iPad at home for business stuff  and for watching missed  TV shows in bed.  I love that this stand will make it hands free as I really get tired holding it as I do with my Kindle. Hard to grab that glass of wine while watching a show and reaching out!.

Not mentioning it on the shopping thread because those crazy girls might empty the shop when they  see it. I have watched all the VDO's on You Tube and have read all the stuff I could find on Kribbitt  man Paul and  really want him to succeed . It is really a clever thing. Helene told me she has met him, likes him and that is good enough for me. Also I think he is charity minded as well so it is nice to give him support

:o Woh! That's a big photo! How do you reduce them before posting to Tapatalk? Gert?

Hi MJ, not sure if you've found a way.

Tapatalk on iPad asks you for the size of your photo before posting it. It has 3 standard options: small, medium, large. I think medium is the best size as it doesn't require scrolling when viewing the pics via safari. Small is too tiny.

:o Woh! That's a big photo! How do you reduce them before posting to Tapatalk? Gert?

Very good question!!!

If you take a photo with an iPhone  you can send it by email to  yourself and reduce it before sending.when you get it you can save it and use that. If you take it with a camera you can photoshop it  on your computer. If you take it with an iPad I have no idea. I am not a photo person but Tarsis or SueJen may be able to tell us.

You can also upload indirectly from your computer to here but I don't think from your iPad or phone.

Love it if  someone could tell us. We could put it in the tips and tricks thread.

Sorry not any help.

Gert

Hi Gert,

I've used a very simple tool called Imagewell on my MacBook for cropping and resizing photos. Was provided by my company when I worked as a web developer. Photoshop is too fiddly for my :D

Uploading directly from ipad to tapatalk is very easy. Have yet to try it on my iPhone.

The frosty is a good colour for  Stainless steel kitchen and DH liked it so he got that one.. . The pink is cheeky. I gave that one to my daughter but like it so much I have bought another for the mini. I like the black in my black and white kitchen. The green is Thermomix green. Don't like blue but it would suit some. Bought the frosty for a friend.

That is why it is so hard to help people with Tapatalk as each is different. Try using the HD and see if there is an add on for photos . That might work or like you say just come back later and no doubt it will pop up. Curious isn't it?

Gert, I read the ipad book you suggested we buy, and have now tidied up the homescreen and put some of the apps in folders.  I really surprise myself at times.  Just have to re-read the book to  find out now  about bookmarks ??? ??? and  I will be uptodate.  ;D

If I told ya then it would take the fun away!   Look to the top of this page . To the left of the address is an arrow in a box. Tap that and you will get a hint. Once you have bookmarked some favourites then you can go to the  icon to the left of the cloud which is to the left of the  icon you just tapped. You can see it looks like an open book. Tap that and you will see all your bookmarks. You can then organise them into folders or files . For instance. If you make a folder named recipes every time you see a recipe you can bookmark that page and put it into your folder marked recipes. That saves you searching and searching for a page or website or this forum to find that particular page.  Just open bookmarks and tap the page you saved.

Screen shots are another way to keep recipes you see in an album in Photos but that is another wee lesson.

Gert

Yup. DH has a leather cover which is quite thick and it is fine. Also fits without a cover. You can bend it and stretch it and play with it so it fits just about every device. And it is still solid. Amazing invention.

A quote from Gert elsewhere which may be useful to iPad users.

Did you know that when taking a picture with the iPad that you can hold your thumb or finger on the button while focusing as it does not take a snap until you release the button. Might help.

Gert

and one from Cookie too

When you have one screen open on safari, tap the plus sign near the top right. This will give you the opportunity to type in whatever you want for your second screen. Eg glitter graphics. You will then see that you have two things open and you can tap on them to use which ever you want.
I should have perhaps made this clear that it is only when using safari. (As far as I know)

GF when you tap the plus sign all that happens is that the words Forum Thermomix etc seem to slide to the left. Then you can type in a new address up in the white boxes where you type Internet addresses. I will do a screen shot of what it looks like after you tap the plus.

Then you type in the new address and hey presto you have two windows open and you just tap each one to move between them.
( I'm still in my py's, it is 8.30 and everyone has gone out for the day, I'd better go and get dressed!)

When all else fails GF close all windows and doors and reboot.

Re boot by holding the home button and the on off button at the same time for a few seconds. Wait a minute then do the same again. You will see an apple thinking. When it is finished you will get the slide to open invite.

I also use the atomic web app  for searching when Safari is mucking up.

Well now I can tell you a story about my mini IPad. When I was "filming" Mama Fergies adventures up here in Tropical North Queensland I dropped my mini iPad on the concrete flood face down. It chipped and cracked the glass but the iPad still worked fine. I finally got around to taking it to an alleged Apple reseller/repair shop nearby called Talk to the Mac. I have had dealing with this mob on more than a few occasions. on each and every occasion I have been sorely disappointed with their lack of knowledge of their product and their lack of interest in their customers. On this occasion I was not surprised to learn that they actually do not do any repairs and apparently have no idea where repairs can be found in all of Cairns. maybe Brisbane???

I sort of knew that so went in just to wind them up. I walked a bit further to the lovely, helpful people who own Applescreens who actually do repairs but are not an official Apple shop.. They offered  to replace the screen for $200 with 3 month warranty .The lovely staff took my mini and immediately put a protective screen on it  no charge. "Just so it won't get any dirt in it while you decide'. How nice. She also advised me to take it into Cairns Central to Next Byte and use their  iConcierge service. So off I went last Tursday where my mini was assessed, and popped into abag . I signed an agreement to whatever and today I received a call to get my NEW mini.  4 days. Wow. $306 for a new mini.

I advise anyone doing the same to back up their device. write down all their  email passwords and any other  important stuff. It is now tethered to my Mac  for re downloading all my apps. The restore took less than 2 minutes but the apps  will take  several hours. 3 month warranty or whatever is left of your original warranty. Which ever is the longer which in my case is under warranty until November. I did have my original mini engraved with my email address but I would have had to wait for two weeks for that one so was happy

Gert

Gretchen, I have had to do the same with two iPads after accident with DS.the apple store told me they "replace" them with a new one for half the cost of a new one. Thankfully te two we have broken were the lowest models so cheaper to replace.

One benefit of having a cheaper version. I have no intention of dropping this one again. I missed it more than my bigger ones because it is  the one with a SIM  card. I now have to put that back in but need daylight to see the damn thing.

You may have to re think about letting DS use the IPad. LOL!

I was shown this for the iphone, too, a couple of months ago when my phone had a bit of a hissy fit and I took it into Telstra to find out what the heck was going on. . . . nobody told me about it before!!  Home page, tap the button twice, hold down any of the apps that appear and then continue pressing the little "minus" sign in the left hand corner.  The fellow in the store spent about 5 minutes deleting all mine!! ;D ;D ;D

He's actually managed to break 3 screens! The first was the day I handed my old one over to him and he was so excited he took it to a mates place and their dog liked the look of it and pulled it off the bench ad he was devastated, the 2nd his mate was playing with it and dropped it, the third time I have no idea how it happened and it won't get replaced unless he can pay for it. The first 2 we felt a little sorry for him but by the third he should ave known better.

If you can afford to give such an expensive thing to your kids to "play" with then fine . But if you can't then they should not have one until they can afford to buy their own and realise how many hours you have to work to to pay for it. Maybe  they would then have some respect for it and treat it with care. I cringe when I see toddlers in strollers playing with IPads or kids with IPhones  like I saw at Yorkeys  Knob Yacht Cub restaurant. One kid took the iPhone into to kiddie play area and shared it around. She was even in the slippery dip with it. Yikes!

I really don't consider these devices as toys but that is me.  If a kid needs a computer, which I think they do, then an iPad  will be useful for those old enough to get the concept . I think they probably need both these days. A phone not so much. I think it is great that schools are embracing the technology but we all have to pay for it.

I've dropped my iPhone a few times over the years and despite a few dinks in the casing I've never actually broken the screen. I kind of pit that down to luck and the screen protectors.

I once ended up with a cm wide gouge in my first iPhones screen a mere few weeks after getting it (back when they first came out) as my son (then just a toddler) basked into my and knocked it out of my hand. I was kneeling so it fell only a short distance, unfortunately it landed onto the carpet divider in the doorway.

I've dropped an ipad once, the originally ipad a couple of days before we were due to sell it. I somehow picked it up badly and it bounced off the work surface in the kitchen and went from one end to the other. Amazingly it didn't break the screen or stop it working though it did end up with a dent in the back. (It was out of its case because a different iPad was in it) again I had a screen protector on.

I'm hyper paranoid about screens and always use a screen protector to prevent accidental scratches (even if the glass is supposed to be highly resistant to them). That said you have to be going some to break a screen in normal usage.
Title: Re: IPad Tips and Tricks
Post by: gertbysea on July 13, 2013, 01:52:19 am
That is true Tarasis . In my case when I dropped the mini it went face down and I think not even a screen protector would have helped. I dropped my iPhone from a height of 1.2 metres, it fell on it's face but the case protected it. With my mini I opened it and held it by the silly magnetic cover by mistake of course. It was not a strong enough magnetic to hold. I did buy another case which is not as slim and adds bulk but is more protective. I am not a fan of screen protectors and both my older bigger iPads have suffered no scratches so far. Probably good luck. Not they are pretty well protected living in their Kribbitts. Have you bought on yet?

I missed my mini so much and it was gone for only 3 days. Don't think I ever missed my kids that much. LOL!

Here's a couple of things you can also do on your iPhone as well:

If you are typing and make a mistake, shake iPad and a speech bubble will come up asking if you want to undo typing. To reinstate back, repeat .

To create a shortcut for phrases and address you frequently use, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > keyboard shortcuts > create new shortcut.

Phrase (eg. Thermomix)
Shortcut (You may choose : tm)
every time you type the shortcut it will come up with the phrase automatically and you press the space bar to accept. Use it to shortcut your address. You will probably find an example already there such as "You there?"

For cookie.

If you want to cut and paste on iPad  tap the link or whatever until it turns blue then stretch or shrink that bit you want to use.

Then tap and hold in the middle .....up comes select all .... Tap that then  cut or copy turns up choose copy.

Open where you want to paste it in a reply or email or whatever then tap the space and hold.....it will say paste.....tap paste.

Or just google it and find the apple answer.
