I thought I would start a thread that we could use to share all our tips and help for iPad users. I will start by saying everyone with an iPad wanting to use it to post photos on the forum should first download from Apple iTunes Store Tapatalk HD . It costs about $2. At the moment.
Be sure to register it with Tapatalk. Find the forum and if you cannot figure it out I will try to explain it.
The next useful one to buy is IPad Secrets Tips and Tricks which is only .99 and is awesome. I use it all the time. Easy reading and great for dummies like me. It is also good because it will reveal more secret stuff every few months. There are Lot of secrets embedded in your iPad. Steve jobs loves his little secrets.
You will also learn when using the iPads why you see so many commas. Easy mistake while typing.
I am sure you all have a Few tips to contribute.
Andisenji has done the courses so I am sure she will want to contribute as she is far more tech savvy than moi.
We don't want any techno babble just plain talk.
Nazar's DH will want to know why the VDO I sent him was upside down. I don't know. What I do know is that when sending stuff from my Apple iPad to my Microsoft Windows PC it is often upside down. Probably a joke between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Ha Ha boys. Play a Joke on God yet Steve?
A lot of stuff can be seen on You Tube. There is always some nerd who wants to show off. Some VDO's are better than others depending whether they want to show what they know or just want to show off.
Mr Google is most useful so go there first. The real Apple shops hold tutorials all the time for free and the staff are there to help in real time so ask.
If I we can put all the stuff we know here we will have a great resource very handy.
If you have favourite app and know how to use it then please share. If anyone mentions Angry Birds they will be banned until they smarten up and fly right.
All typos will be silently acknowledged because we all know how it happens. If the bloody thing does not acknowledge Andisenji name as a real name it will after about 4 attempts so trust it. Another little secret.
Maybe we could leave quotes out and just put each tip or trick in a new post so when searching it will come up easily.
Nd will be accepted as and to save everyone retyping it. Don't ask you will get it. If there is no cap at the start of a sentence ignore it as we all will get it.
Automatic spelling corrections are a pain in the ass but try using the iPad without it at your peril.
Anyway. What to you think?
Oh o maybe I should have asked MM first. Nah the moderators will give me a slap first.

iPad tip.
As some of us have names not recognisable to the English language, I find the iPad will recognise it after few attempts usually three or four when using auto correction.
You will find the settings for this by going to Settings, General, Keyboard.
Gert
-
Tip for a shortcut.
If you use a word like Thermomix and you do not want to type it all the time you can create a short cut.
Settings, general, keyboard, shortcut.
I created TMXTHINGY by making my Shortcut TMX.
-
Thanks Gert. I learned a lot from you over the retreat. The iPad secrets is really good. I have only glanced at it so far. After the housework and cooking ( I missed TMX) I will get into it.
One very bad thing I learned on the retreat is to have your iPad with you and handy. Now mine is on the kitchen bench and I keep stopping to check it and of course get hooked looking. Bad habit, but I love it CP you MUST DO IT.
A new hint. Tap the arrow you use for capitals etc twice In quick succession and it will lock on and you can WRITE LIKE THIS. Caps lock really. Just found out the other day.
-
Tip when posting photos on Tapatalk.
When the photo code is on the posting and still highlighted be sure to press return before going on to adding another photo or text otherwise you might lose it and have to redo it.
Gert
-
I have an android (Samsung Galaxy Tablet), they are so similar to iPads, I hope it's OK for me to post a hint too!
My hint is when you find a recipe online that you like, you can just take a screen-shot of it (there is an icon to do this at the bottom of the screen), then you will have it saved in your gallery for quick reference. It also helps as you don't need internet access and can take/use the recipe everywhere! My tmx and tablet are rarely seen without each other!
I also do this regularly with my smartphone, I take photos of recipes then email the photo to myself so I have in my tablet when cooking at home and on my phone when I am out shopping.
-
Excellent. Maybe we need an android thread so people don't get confused.
Great tip. I will put it up for the iPad.
-
Tip for taking screen shots.
A screen shot is seeing something in your screen and taking a picture of it.
To take a picture of what you are seeing put your thumb on the round indentation with the square in white which is on the short side by the power adapter plug.
At the same time put your pointer finger on the On / Off button on the opposite short side where the camera eye is.
With your thumb and finger in place click them together. You will then find the photo in your Photos.
-
I missed all the iPad lessons I was looking forward to but slowly I am working out the basics which is getting me through. Can we ask questions here too?
As a moderator I will answer my own question - YES :D :D
Gretchen, I downloaded my pictures just after I got the original iPad but didn't realise there were some food pictures in there which hadn't been deleted. I don't want to keep them but have no idea how to delete them from the iPad. Bet it's simple but I have tried and can't do it.
-
Tip removing photos from iPAD 2 and 3 and hopefully iPad 1
Open photos. Scroll to find the photo you want to remove. Tap on it. See the garbage bin on the upper right hand corner? Tap on it. Tap delete. Gonski.
Now sometimes the pesky stuff along the top with the useful bits disappears . Just slide your finger along the top edge and it will appear.
-
Nothing at the top of my ipad but yes, tap and it comes up but with the following icons Gretchen
Telstra 3G 6.32pm Battery level
Photos 85 of 108 Slideshow then an arrow in a box
When you click on the arrow in the box you get these options
email photo
message
assign to contact
use as wallpaper
tweet
print
copy photo
Can see nothing to delete though.
-
Tip to send a photo easy peasy.
Tap the photo you want to send. See the arrow in the square on the upper right hand corner? Tap on it. Tap email and address the email. The photo will up load automatically and away she goes.
Gert

If someone has an iPad one that can help please do.
Do you have the photo in your screen? What happens. When you tap on it?
-
This is what I see
(http://img.tapatalk.com/79de37d0-8b75-667c.jpg)
-
See the little garbage bin JD? do you have that one?
-
No garbage bin Gretchen.
-
In that case you may have to live with it until someone with an iPad one can help. Bugger!
There is a new iPad mini coming out in October that will be not so expensive . Maybe you could pass that very generously given one along to another and buy a new one.
I am all for passing things forward as you know. I like to pass forward to strangers and not to family.
Gert
-
No garbage bin Gretchen.
Did you transfer this photo from your PC? If so you may be able to delete it from there as it will be view only on your iPad 1.
Gert
-
Yes it was transferred from PC but I don't want pictures of food on the iPad. I delete them once I've posted them on the forum. No worries, someone will know the answer Gert.
-

Try hooking up your iPad up to the PC going to the food photo in the PC and delete it there. It should then sync and remove it from your iPad. Since you have no camera on your iPad one it is view only and you cannot alter or delete it.
Gert.
-
I think this is what yo mean, and I apologize if I've misunderstood. To delete photo's you tap the box with the arrow inside of it at the top right hand side of the screen, then tap the photos that you want to delete. A little tick will appear on the photo then you can tap the delete button that appears at the top left of the screen. As a side note, you can also tap the share button and email multiple photo's as well.
-
Also, speaking of photos, you can save photos from the Internet/Safari by tapping it and holding your finger down on it for a second or so. A button will appear to 'Save Photo'. Tap that and it'll save to your photos app.
-
Thanks for the tip on making your own shortcuts Gert! I knew there was something there, but hadn't got around to exploring and finding out.
This is an iPhone tip, not an iPad one: When taking photos, you can move the white square around and the lighting will be taken from this area. To test it, take a landscape photo and move the square to the sky, take another and move it to the foreground or hills/water in background. Try lots of different areas and compare the photos.
Since I have an iPad2, I rarely use it for photos, but do use my iPhone quite a lot.
-
Followed your instructions Jakodai, saw the delete button and ticks for the first time but got no response from the delete button. Will work on Gretchen's idea tomorrow.
-
JS, it sounds as though you may have to delete it that way. I have some photos on my iPad that can't be deleted from the iPad, maybe because you put it on from the computer, you have to remove it from the computer.
-
I can see the logic in it jakodai but I thought iPads were smarter than that.
-
I am slowly working my way through the app 'iPad secrets'. It is wonderful. I'm trying to incorporate as many as I can. Xxx thanks Gert.
-
judydawn with the ipad one i vaguely remember there being a glitch where if the photo was downloaded from the computer it needs to be deleted via the computer but if you have loaded it directly to the ipad via the camera connector you can delete directly from the ipad. I'm assuming you don't have the camera connector so looks like you will need to delete from the computer first and then sync the ipad.
-
I am slowly working my way through the app 'iPad secrets'. It is wonderful. I'm trying to incorporate as many as I can. Xxx thanks Gert.
It is money well spent for any level.
Gert
-
Very cheap at 99 cents. I think I have saved myself more than that in time, not having to use safari for my favourite sites. They are all in one icon now marked favourite sites.
-
Amazing isn't it what you can learn quickly if you have a resource to hand.
Gert
-
Chookie showed me how to upload photos via whilst we enjoyed morning tea at Kings Pk. I believe she was taught by the best ;-)
Here's what happens when you don't wear make up...(http://img.tapatalk.com/cbcec83e-c30b-ad35.jpg)
-
Is that you CP?
-
;D yes, first thing in the morning
-
There's no stopping you now. Aren't they (iPads) the best?
-
;D yes, first thing in the morning
Nup, can't be.
-
I thought it was me! I have a very similar photo! I'll upload it later.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/7cb673f0-2c5b-3e8a.jpg)
Just practicing uploading photos
-
Ooh, how exciting! It worked. Here's another.(http://img.tapatalk.com/7cb673f0-2ca8-c8b8.jpg)
-
MJ, you look like you have a beard.
-
Too funny MJ. It is such fun to play with.
Gert
-
MJ we look like we're related?
-
Looks that way CP!
Why are they coming up sideways on the computer, Gert?
-
Looks that way CP!
Why are they coming up sideways on the computer, Gert?
Personally I think it is a joke between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
You have to think this way..... the iPad is NOT a computer. It is an Apple product and works in a very much different way to Microsoft. It is quirky. Anyway doesn't matter as you can lean over or make the pc lean over. LOL Just one of those things a nerd could tell ya. I just live with it
-
Everyone with an IPad be sure to update to the new IOS 6 . There are a lot of new features including SIRI which is a hoot.
Also you will need to update a lot of your apps .
Gerr
-
just updated Gert but haven't had much of a look yet
-
Um er How do I update please Gert? I would love Siri.
I am still keeping my ipad tidy. I have even managed to put my new apps into the sorted out places. :-))
-
Good on you cookie 1.
Go to settings, general, software update.
Be sure to sync it all with your computer too if you use the computer. If you have not synced or updated in a while it may take a few hours . I know Of someone who took many hours to update. If you keep yours updated frequently it won't take long. Mine took a few minutes and Dh's took 4 hours.
Everyone with an iPhone and iPod should update as well.
The iPad one will not update a lot of stuff. Judy Christmas is coming.
I love Siri and can ask her lots of stuff including where is the nearest pizza shop. Siri will search the web for you and you can dictate memos and emails to her. All new for the iPad. I really want an iPhone. I hope Ted loses our Nanna phone or maybe drops it .
Siri can you finish this? Well maybe she cannot do everything.
Gert
-
Siri will bend over backwards trying to be helpful, but she is as bad sometimes as calling the phone company :D
-
Oh yeah she is funny. She is new to me with the iPad so is being nice to me.
Gert
-
Still haven't had time to work out my Tapatalk and how to post photos.
Hopefully will have some time to work it out over the weekend .

4. Find Thread
5. Tap arrow (to reply), (down at bottom on right side)
6. Tap Photo Album or

9 Tap screen to remove blue from code at top
10. Type message
11. Press send.
-
Thanks CP for the step by step instructions.
That's exactly what I need.
Free time Saturday or Sunday so will try to set it up then. :)
MF
-
Thank goodness you knew CP.I can hardly remember.
You do need the PAID app not the freebie
Gert
-
Forgot to say I have already downloaded Tapatalk :)
Had the free one but Gert told me when I was in Melbourne that I needed the paid app so I bought and downloaded it but unfortunately had no time to sit down and work out how to use it.
-
Instructions courtesy of chookie who'd emailed them to me 8)
-
great that we are all here to help each other..
CP, love your pineapple cheesecake.
:-* :-* :-*
-
CP, love your pineapple cheesecake.
:-* :-* :-*
Hehehe
-
I do my photos a different way on tapatalk, it sounds easier, but CP couldn't do it on her iPad. I won't confuse the issue by posting it unless someone wants me too.
-
Post it cookie, I hope I can do it ;D
-
I love my iPad :D
A friend of mine just got a iPhone 5, lucky her :)
-
Just seen this, what a great idea. You attach it to your iPad then hook it onto your exercise equipment (treadmill , exercise bike etc)
Think I might get one :)

I have a massage chair and it has an apple app that links with it.
It's the best massage ever apart from Obbie. ;D
-
Hally needs one of those so she doesn't fall of the treadmill :D :D
-
MF i would like a massage chair, Unfortunately I can't massage myself.
-
This is the phto I have explained below.
Type in your message(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/esate2uz.jpg)
-
OK CP here is the way I post photos on tapatalk.
1. open the tapatalk app.
2. Click the little forum thing on the bottom and select the bit you want to post in. eg chit chat.3.
3. Select where you want to post. eg ipad tips and tricks.
4.When it opens click to write a reply.
5.Type in your message and half way down on the right (above the key board you will see a camera and other stuff.
6. Tap that and it opens up a viewfinder thing.
7. Take your photo. Say of a coffee cup and it will take the photo and say 'use'.
8. Tap that and it will have the photo saying 'upload'.
( Tap that and it will give you a size. I select small.
10. The link to the photo will be with your message.
11. Tap send and hey presto it is there.
These seems long but is very easy to do.
The photo from the ipad beat me!!!!
-
Yup cookie good one if you want to take a photo on the spot and not save it to your camera roll.
When you have hundreds and maybe a thousand. Photos it saves scrolling to find the one you want.
A good way to cut down on searching for photos is to organise them into albums . I have lots of albums such as food photos, family photos, clip art etc.
Gert
-
Robyn I have had a massage chair for over ten years as have had neck and shoulder problems.
DH bought me this newest model recently.
It's OSIM uDivine and it is amazing. I know longer go to the chiropractor and used to go weekly or fortnightly for the last 20 years.
The first one was good but this one is fantastic ;D
-
Ok, it's the part where you press tap and unload, I'm not getting the bit where you can select your size. Hang on, I will just have another look....
-
sounds good MF..
-
Ok, it's the part where you press tap and unload, I'm not getting the bit where you can select your size. Hang on, I will just have another look....
I don't see that bit either.
Gert
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/28/qyqybuqa.jpg)
Nah, the part where you tap "use" and "upload" I only get the option of uploading to "tapatalk hosted". I checked and I'm using the paid version, so I'm not sure why there is a difference. It would be great to be able to make my photos smaller
-
Good work CP smaller would be good
-
I have never been able to make the pics smaller from the iPad.
In any case it is no big deal.
If you want to fuss about you can re size from the computer but why bother?
Gert
-
what a big hand you have CP ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
That's interesting. Mine has always done that. It must know that I am an iPad dodo.
Thanks for the photos advice Gert. I'm going to put some of my trip photos on Instagram .
-
I've recently discovered instagram. Does anyone else use it?
-
From my pone cookie.its great
-
I have got it on my iPad as I can't use my phone for that sort of thing.
-
Cookie I have used Instagram for putting photos on FB but really have no idea about it. Not really interested in photos but if I were I would have a read about it.
Anything that works with ease is good.
Gert
-
I love the avatar CP.
-
I'm hoping someone can help me. I was chatting to the lady over the way here at Koorarawalya (as one does) and she has a tmx. So we were best buddies immediately. She was telling me you can get an app that you can write your journal and it will incorporate your photos. She just popped over to tell me it was iPhone. (the app name). I have looked and can't work out which one it may be. Does anyone know anymore please? :)
-
"Momento" is a really popular iOS journal. I remember reading about it in the newspaper and I looked it up but never downloaded it does look good though. And exactly what you are looking for.
Jadey :)
-
Thanks Jadey I will have a look at it.
-
There was a discussion on here about how,to store recipes and the app "paprika" was mentioned. I've been using it and quite like it.
-
Love paprika!
Just thought I would put a hyperlink here for adding photos to the forum from the iPad (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=11340.60). Very easy when you know how.
-
I have just learnt a tip from my daughter.
I've found it frustrating when typing on the iPad and I need to go back and correct an error, particularly if only one letter in a word needs correcting. It is really hard to position the cursor in the exact spot that you want, so that you can make the correction. If you hold your finger over the word, a circle will come up that magnifies the area. You can then move your finger to the left or the right, without taking it off the iPad, until you have found the exact spot you want. At this point, you take your finger off the ipad and make the correction. Voila!
-
To type in all capitals LIKE THIS, double click the Shift key.
-
After a year of hoping for an update to the iOS Yummy Soup app, I've given up on it and am pretty much about to buy Paprika. Been reading reviews and comments and such.
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/08/cooking-with-the-ipad-which-apps-offer-the-best-experience/
I know both it and Evernote are well liked here.
-
Loving paprika rob, and slowly adding all my fave TM recipes, and then other recipes as I remember them. Very easy to add recipes. Super easy to download a recipe if the website is compatible, but also very easy if its not.
-
Good to hear CP, I need something that will work with me (what needs to be iPad as that is what I have around most / my iPhone), I have an ever growing Note page which has links to recipes that I want to cook or have cooked. I rarely take the time to go on the Mac, crack open yummy soup, save the recipes, then manually transfer them to the iPad app - too much hassle.
I think the only thing I dislike is that it's €4 for iPad app and €4 for iPhone. (Not overly caring about the Mac app, though I might pick that up at some point - at present my Mac is for programming, book reviewing /editing, gaming or browsing occasionally and I'm not really doing much of any of those at the moment)
-
I have been using Momento for writing a sort of trip journal and it enables me to add photos as well. Thank you all.
-
I have just bought an Apple TV. Unbelievable. Now I can use my iPad on my TV screen. It mirrors everything I can do on my iPad plus I can download stuff to my TV like movies TV shows and my DH entire library of classical music can now be played on the TV.
Only $128 including the HDMI cable.
-
My DH has an Apple TV (along with everything else Apple :))
I don't really know how to use it, but it is a handy gadget that's for sure.
-
It may take me. While, but so far it is pretty intuitive.
Gert
-
Gert you are a bit of an appley lady.
-
Seems am now.
-
No more reading racy books from the kindle app while DH watches TV ;D
-
Never heard of it. How big is this Apple TV Gretchen? You're way ahead in the technology stakes than anyone I know although maybe Katie's DH is up the top there with you. Sounds like you are going to be kept busy and loving every minute of it.
-
Judy compared to other tech it's tiny. It's jokingly referred to as a hockey puck.
On the attached photo it's beside my fist which isn't that big (I'm 6ft but not a hefty or strong person). Out the back are 4 cables which let to right are:
Network cable: isn't required if you have wifi
Optical Audio Cable: isn't required, only if you want audio to be handled by a hifi
HDMI : required for connecting to TV. Amazon's Basics cable was the cheapest I could find (cable handles both picture and audio)
Power: required
It's a simple device and useful enough without an iOS device (playing iTunes Store videos, Vimeo, YouTube, playing music from your computer) but with an iPad or iPhone you can use AirPlay to show the devices screen on your Telly (either as a pure mirror function and showing on both device and Telly, or basically projecting a version of the device's content to the TV scaled properly which is useful for streaming video, or last but not least for displaying different content on both device and TV say like a quiz game or scrabble) or to play music via your Telly/Hifi.
My daily use for the Apple TV is streaming music to my Hifi. I have a Mac upstairs with all of my music library on it, it is set to use the AppleTV as a speaker. I then use the iPad or iPhone & Apple's Remote app to chose the music I want to hear (you don't need to have the TV on) or for choosing a video to watch (the TV needs to be on for it to start due to DRM (Digital Rights Management) built into the HDMI spec).
Otherwise I use it to stream other videos from my Mac via the iPad to the Apple TV. It isn't as complicated as it sounds, basically you are watching the video on the iPad but using AirPlay to push it to the AppleTV. I occasionally game with Real Racing 2, use AirPlay to push photos I've taken on the iPhone or videos to the TV for everyone to see.
-
No photo attached Rob but I now see from Gretchen's photo with the little brush that it is quite small. I'm glad you guys have the time to fiddle with technology, you are both into it and it gives you pleasure which is great.
-
Oops forgot to attach it.
Yes tech excites me, programming is my former life and I still keep a hand in with Mac and IPhone/iPad programming (and editing / reviewing some iPhone / iPad programming books)
-
It is as Rob describes but to keep,it simple for some of us it basically mirrors your iPad on the screen. Mine is set up with just the HDMI cable which goes from the 'hockey puck ' to the HDMI plug at the back or side of TV which must support HDMI . I downloaded Apple Remote app . This adds to your phone / iPad a symbol which is a rectangle with a triangle poking up into the rectangle from the bottom on the strip along the bottom of you iPad .
When you double tap the home button the strip,is exposed. You then slide it to the right. This brings in to view the audio, volume view with a Musical note symbol I'm the right. You will then see the rectangle with arrow which symbolises the TV with mirroring. Tap that symbol and you will get the iPad on your TV screen.
Mine it set up with by way of wifi. It can also be set up from your Ethernet which requires a telephone cable from your Ethernet box to the hockey puck but it would have to be within reach.
DH has several hundred Classical Music CD's which he downloaded to his computer over several months. He then added them to,his classic IPod. Since the music is in his computer I can wifi it to the TV via the Apple TV where it can play the music. Also all the Album covers and all the details float across the screen.
If I can set this up then any one can.it took me all of Tenina the ThermoMixtress minutes to figure the basics. It may take me years to actually figure out all it can do.
I can now download a movie from iTunes to see on TV instead of the iPad. I can use my iBBC to watch everything available on the BBC app which I paid $79 for a year. Are you paying attention ACHOOKWOMAN! This is a real bonus if you love all the stuff which is available on that free/paid app.

For some fun download the free app Shzam. Aim your iPhone/iPad at any music and it will tell you what it is. Really it does. That little bit of music playin in an ad on TV driving you nuts? You have heard if but don't know what it is.Shzam will tell you.
DH tried to trick it by pulling out a really obscure piece of music rarely played. He had a CD he got years ago and is now unavailable. He put it on the player and within 20 seconds Shzam had told the iPad what it was and showed the cover of the Album. Good fun.
Show your kids how cool you are when they are playing their crap on the radio or iPod by aiming at the music and telling them what they are listening and who it is. Funny as.

Some good tips here for getting work done.
http://www.gadgetguy.com.au/how-to-be-more-productive-with-your-ipad/
I have a zaggfolio which is also good for working on the iPad.
Gert

I am really excited about the new mini iPad . I will wait for the 4G release . Be nice to. Be able to carry it in my handbag easily and much lighter too!
Gert
-
Having an iPad 3 I can't really justify it but I want and iPad 3S. It's one of those subtle admissions that the 3 wasn't quite ready for release in March (the display is amazing but occasionally the device feels under powered and does get a tough too hot).
Maybe I can sell the 3 and get the 3S ... And then die as the missus clubs me round the noggin.
Have yet to see the event stream as I'm on holiday in the UK ATM, and the Internet available to me is rather poor.

How do you insert pictures from glitter graphics or one those free sites using an ipad ...can anyone help ...I can do it from my laptop but not my ipad.

Ahh thank you Gert. I do have a paid version but didn't think to download pics from other websites from there. :)

No no.
When you are seeing a pic or anything when using the Internet. Just tap on the pic and a window will open asking you to save. Tap that and it will save to your camera roll.
You do not use Tapatalk to save photos.

I love this Tapatalk since Gert showed me how to do it.
-
Here's some Tapatalk instructions (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=11057.45) that chookie gave me.
-
Thank you CP and Gert. Will try using this method. :)

Whoopee I didn't know I could do graphics like that. I thought it was only for photos. Thank you Gert. Here is my practise one especially for you. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/10/25/bu7yqery.jpg)

I loved that graphic so much that I tapped it to save it to my camera roll. I then opened up Tapatalk found this thread tapped on the arrow at the bottom which opens up this window and now I am going to my photo album to find the pic and tap it right here

Easy peasy

Thank you. It is easy peasy.

I have just ordered the new mini iPad. Disappointed to find I cannot use my current SIM card but have to buy a nano SIM . Never mind by the time it arrived I would have only 2 months to go,on my other.
Love them Apples!
Gert
-
I certainly won't be buying one Gert, but I look forward to all the things you show us with it.
-
When do you get it Gert?
-
Good for you Gretchen, is there anything else on your list of must haves now ;D
-
It was not so much a MUST have as a useful want. I figure I have worked hard all my life and sacrificed enough in the past. Up here there is not a lot to do Or spend money on. We can't travel much because of the DOGS and I do enjoy my iPad. I love being in touch with my friends right here, my pals all over Australia And overseas and my family here and there. I like being spontaneous and taking random pics that tickle my fancy and sharing these times when they happen. The iPad is quite heavy and cumbersome so.........
And it will be here at the end of November.
There is nothing new about it just smaller. It keeps my mind active. I can be transported to any where I like. I can read the NY Times and the Guardian. I can watch Lark Rise to Candelford or old Lucille Ball TV,shows . I can research things of interest and write a letter to my mother.
And I can do all of it easily from anywhere I like.
Best of all it is fun.
Gert
-
You are certainly right Gert. We work hard all our lives and to be truthful we never know when it will end. So why not enjoy every day? When I am destitute, then I'll worry.
-
Me too cookie!
Gert
-
Enjoy them all Gretchen - will you have time to sleep ;)
-
Yup!
Pop them under my pillow.

My kids know when I buy the latest gizmo that its because "you are just a tech head mum". Not that I am super computer literate but I do love my gadgets. Why not! We all have our foibles, and it doesn't hurt anyone.
Its great cos you teach us, we can point something out to you, and then we can pass on knowledge to each other. DD24 who you met at the retreat wants to buy either an iPad or a mini for when she goes to the US on Boxing Day. It will be interesting to know what you reckon whether to go the bigger one or the smaller. I can see the smaller being more handy in terms of handbag size and posting pics directly onto Facebook.
-
I'd be curious about the Mini but my wife is dead set against that, however she seems more amenable to an iPad 4 (she'd get my 3, I'd get 4 and we'd sell older iPad we have).
However as on holiday I missed the pre-order window for next Friday, now it's for two weeks.
Like CP63 I'm a gadget nut (generally Apple) so it's really hard to resist new ones.
-
I mainly want the mini Rob so it fits in my handbag easily. I don't use my iPhone at all. It is just an emergency thing . I do however use my iPad ALL THE TIME and it is heavy and sometimes cumbersome. I also have to have my Kindle at all times so with three devices the weight adds up. I figure the mini will replace the Kindle when I am out . I prefer messaging on the iPad to texting on the phone. It is great for keeping in touch with email ( formally pen ) pals when out. It is fun to actually show and tell than write and describe.
Whe I was looking at the Apple TV I was able to message a photo home to DH and show him the cable connector and ask if we had one already before buying a new one. It is handy for things like that. It is cheaper to use the 3G on the iPad than the 3G on the phone.
Where you have no wireless you are likely to have 3G but I notice some cafes are advertising free wireless. I Cairns the council, are setting up a wireless area in the City
When DH needs a thing a ma jig at the hardware he can take a photo here and show at the store just what he is looking for. If he is about to take something apart he takes a photo first so can put it back the right way. This has proved very useful. Note this.....when removing patterned curved pavers take a picture first!!! It will save hours and angst. And your DW telling you she told you so.
If you want a special cut of meat for a recipe take a pic to show, the butcher.
Wen travelling the iPad is invaluable. Taking photos and wee VDO's in remote places can endear you to the locals. A crowd may gather and you can make instant friends. In a tiny village in Cambodia I was able to take a family photo and immediately email it to the family VIA a local shop who printed the pic for them. Their very first pic of themselves ever. How valuable is that?
A VDO of a woman skinning rats in a market is a treasure. Is it not?
Yup I can't wait for the mini. I think the difference in the 3 and 4 is probably just the improved Retina display which will be nice but no need for an upgrade just yet as far as I am concerned. As more app developers abandon Adobe flash for I products and get with the program it annoys me less that I devices do not support flash.
When stuck in Ho Chi Min City with no way out on one airline I was able to book another instantly without leaving my bar stool!
The uses for and the portability of the iPad amaze me and I love Siri. She an take me anywhere without me lifting a finger.
Gert
-
Now that you make all those points Gretchen I can see how valuable and useful it is, especially in the hands of someone like yourself. Enjoy.
-
Judy have you ever been in a hardware store and tried to buy a thingy to repair your what's it? Or into Spotlight store trying to explain the curtain thingy to teenager? Or into a lighting shop to match a lamp from ten years ago? Take a pic on the iPad first as it is big enough to show. Or a VDO of the place in the garden you want to plant a tree when shopping at a nursery. Not sure of the height ? Take a pic. No more drawing pics for DH so he can shop for something.
Find something on line you want to buy locally? Take a screen shot to show or better yet open up your iPad and take the sales person to the web site. Maybe they can order it in.
Endless practical uses and I am only thinking of the things I want to do with it. With children well ................if only iPads were available then. Today's child will never know what it is like to live without instant information. They will never have to walk in the dark snow covered streets to the library to find out who was Genghis Khan. Hell they probably don't even teach that these days.
No more walking home from the shop with the wrong loaf of bread for mum only to trudge back in the snow to return it and find out the last of Mum's bread had been sold. No ice cream for me that night.
I hate snow but I love iPads.
You can let your teenage daughter shop for her formal dress while you are at work assured that she will message/email a photo first so you can nix the black see through strapless backless $600 number she is now wearing in the shop.
The best is for comparative shopping. Take a pic in Retrovision to show the guy at The Good Guys and get the cheaper price. The 12 year old shop assistant in Hardly Normals can now see what the hell the old fart is talking about when she says she wants the cleaning tablets for her coffee machine.
Want to match a colour or coordinate the doona cover on the bed. No problem.
I need more coffee.
Gert
-
Gert, thanks. I would never have thought of some of those uses. DH has actually learned how to use the camera on the iPad and look at photos. He will be able to take it to Bunnings with him.
-
Yes we saw him in action today taking photos with the iPad and he seems to enjoy using it ;D
Mine is the first model Gretchen and has no camera.
-
I'm with you Gretchen - couldn't be without my I'd or kindle. I would love the smaller iAd and will look at getting one but will need to wait fr te new year I think.
-

My DH likes this one!
LOL

Just had A notice from Apple that they have shipped my cover for the new mini iPad by TNT I bet it will be here before my Thermothingy returns. LOL!
Gert
-
When do you get the iPad Gert. I'm excited and I won't even see it!!!
-
Well the cover arrives tomorrow hopefully so at least we can see the size of it but the mini does not arrive until the end of November because I wanted the 3G capable with wifi. The. I will have to buy a nano SIM card from Telstra.
Gert
-
This is terrible Gert, I checked out the ipad mini site and ebay to check out how much my changeover cost will be. It's having to buy the extra's that add to the overall cost. With your SIM, when I was in the city last week i saw a notice in a shop window that they cut micro sims down to fit the new iphone 5 which i believe is that same size as the ipad mini, it might be worth investigating if you still have a lot of data left.
-
I did think about that but I will have only two months left on my iPad 3 sim. Still have lots of Data but the year runs out in Jan.
I get 1 GByte a month on my iPhone but will use more on my mini perhaps. Or I could tether the mini to the iPhone and use that.
Still if I can get 12GB for $150 for the year then that is pretty cheap as I do use it a lot when out of wifi reach.

Here is another tip.
When posting on the forum using your iPad or iPhone start the post then tap Post after a few words. Then go back and tap modify to finish your post.
This will avoid accidentally deleting before you post. I have done that several times and lost some bigger postings which is a in the butt to re type everything.
Gert

Great idea Gert, I have lost many posts too
H :)

I think my yahoo mail has been hacked.
It's not letting me in with my password and now it's been locked for 12 hours :(

I never use my yahoo account for that reason. Same with hotmail. Not secure it seems to me . So far so good with gmail and BigPond. I have a few email addy's I cannot remember what they are or the passwords!
H that is what made me post that tip. I think I posted it somewhere before. It is handy for the iPad for sure.

Thinking of setting up a gmail account. :)

IPad 3. Mini iPad cover. Kindle. IPhone
Just so you can compare the size.
-
That's going to be a great size Gert
-
I agree. I told DH I had to buy a Sandler handbag in Adelaide as it would fit the iPad in so easily. I haven't used it yet and that was over a week ago. :'(
-
Exciting times Gert. Look forward to updates.

Really starting to consider simply picking up an iPad Mini on Saturday if there is one in the Apple Store (I need to go in for a Genius appointment for my iPhone 5, didn't have time before I left)
Reviews are now coming in for it

I'm sold, just need to work out how much it will cost all up and look at selling my current iPad. The size looks perfect Gretchen, much easier to carry around.

Did you buy one Gert? Are you happy with it?

Last week I ordered the 64 GB with wifi and 3 G. Plus a cover to go with it. The cover arrived but the iPad won't be available u til mid November.
If you want one that I wi fi only you can buy it now, either on line or in an Apple shop.

Thanks Gert let me know what you think when you play around with yours, I am thinking of putting it on my Christmas list ;D ;D

Seems my wife is excited by the idea of the Mini, hopefully I can pick one up for her at the weekend (admittedly with her own money given she is the bread winner and I earn bupkis).

You don't want to wait for the 3G?
Gert
-
No, no point we both have iPhones (with contracts for a year and two years) and can do tethering if we need to so not worth the extra bucks. Better to use those to increase capacity.
-
Gert I meant was the update the colour pallette? That's the only thing i noticed different when I went into tapatalk after your message. I use it but only when i'm wanting to post photos.

Fair enough. Foe me the pre paid 3G on the iPad is cheaper than using my iPhone. I use my iPad far more than the phone..

Wonder I do not know what you mean by colour pallette. I only know I received a message about an update for the Tapatalk from Apple so I did it. They have added a lot of new features including a Gallery. The look is different and the icon has changed. When was the last time you updated all your apps Wonder? You should do it frequently as there are so many changes and apps are being changed for the mini iPad as well.

If we weren't tied contract wise then it would be. Awkward as missus balks at coat of iPhone without contract so we end up perpetually tied to T-Mobile. I barely phone on my iPhone, it's my camera, music player and data device.
-
Sorry haven't read all this thread, but just wondering if anyone with iPads have got the new update of tapatalk?
I like the photo section :D
-
Very strange mine isn't showing up as needing an update and I haven't noticed any difference.
I'm thinking there might be a problem because I always have apps awaiting updating due to my ipad being connected to two other accounts and not knowing the passwords, so I update my own regularly but they only do there's every few months when they want to use my ipad, but there is nothing showing as requiring update - very strange.
-
Wonder I just updated mine, do you have tapatalk HD? I received an email today telling me it was available, love the photo section clicking on the photo takes you to the recipe.
-
Well there was a glitch with my app store updates but it's all fixed and I still can't see any difference in the tapatalk. what should I be seeing? Maybe I don't have the HD version.
-
I have a question, I have deleted apps from my iphone/ipad, but they still show up in the app store when there is an upgrade, is there anyway of deleting them completely?
-
Gert what size iPad mini did you purchase? I've always had the 64g but thinking of going with a 32g this time but not 100% sure.
-
Wonder I ordered the 64 GB.
Jeniwa try deleting them from you computer .
Wonder you should sync your devices more frequently to avoid backlog.
In order to post pictures you must have the paid version of Tapatalk.
Wonder have you updated your devices to the latest operating system? IOS 6 I think.
Love the new gallery on Tapatalk too.
Notice the forum is now on Twitter anyone?
Gert
-
Gert, I haven't upgraded to IOS 6 yet but will be over the weekend, I friend had trouble accessing the Utube app plus a few other problems when he upgraded so I wanted to wait until I had time in case I have problems. I normally synch at least once a week because I have the majority of family photos on both my iPad and the Mac and like to ensure they stay up to date and there is less risk of loosing anything. The problem I have is that the kids will sometimes use my ipad to purchase games under either DH or DD's itunes accounts rather then getting their own ipads out (because they are rarely charged) and because I've never bother to get their passwords when i synch or update I always have a few that can't be updated, I'm not fussed in them because they are generally apps I don't use, but it does mean I always have a message indicating I have apps requiring an update.
-
Sounds very messy to me. Maybe your kids need to get charged with charging their own devices. ;D ;D
Gert
-
One plus with iOS 6 is that the AppStore is a tiny bit more clever and now passwords arent required to update apps (thank the maker). though they may have to have signed in once to the other accounts (even across other stores. I use DE, UK & US)
Also Wonder, you will lose the YouTube app that was on the device but Google have a new one in the AppStore (at least in most app stores, not currently in the DE store)
I know for me I can't go down to 32GB, it's too cramped, our first iPad was 64GB, then I got the iPad 2 with 32GB and was always fretting for space and deleting things I didn't want to, so when I was given the money to get an iPad 3 (long story) I got the 64GB version.
-
Yes that is the case then again not. Sometimes here a password is required and sometimes not. And each device is different. Go figure.
Gert
-
Lol I haven't yet had the not case . Oh dear.
-

It is messy Gretch and I'm also on st Tom to use their own but it's amazing what I find on my iPad some days when I haven't been around! They prefer mine because it has 3G so they can go outintothe back yard and sty connected. It does have one advantages - DD who is 17 forgot to ign out of Facebook quite a few months ago and has or gotten all about it, we have been able to find out lots of things shroud prefer us not to know, and she just thinks we are extremely smart!, :-))
-
Did you make yourself one of her friends wonder?
-
Well wonder the latest i0S 6.01 was released overnight so they will all need updating.
I am not surprised a what some kids put on FaceBook but I am disgusted and appalled at at the lack imagination , the grammar , spelling errors plus the ignorance . Sad really for such a privileged generation.
Gert
-
Cp there is no way she would have me as a friend, this is all be stealth. She also only speaks to people via private messaging rather than on the actual facebook pages, This way I can periodically check up on them particularly when they are organizing parties etc. and at least feel as though I have an idea of what is going on. Al her friends think I have a sixth sense and am extremely smart - if they only knew how I know it all ;D ;D ;D
Gert it does amaze me what some of the kids will put on Facebook and also how naive they are about the long term consequences.

You should ntake some screen shots too but then again your iPad is not private so maybe not. But always a good idea when they come back at ya with I never did/said that.
Screen shots are good insurance for many things.
I am just upgrading my iPhone to iOS6.01
Gert
-
I can never make direct mention of what I've seen because it would give the game away, anything I see discussed I have to weave into conversation as though I've come up with it on my own. A few times I thought I had gone to far but fortunately was able to cover it up. 17 year olds aren't as clever as they think they are, and parents are a lot more clever and devious than what the 17 year olds think we are!
-
Ah! That is because we were there first!
Gert

evening all, anyone know how I start a new thread using Tapatalk I can only see how I respond to an existing thread?
-
If you tap on the button in the top right hand corner that has an arrow, it will give you some options. One of those options is to start a new topic. :)
-
Thank you ES I am going to post a new thread as I am soooo excited I converted a recipe today!!!!!
-
Whoopee. I have just discovered a way to save recipes quickly on the forum. I just 'photograph' the page and it is stored in my camera roll
Then when I have tried it, I can keep or discard it. Everyone probably knows it, but I have just discovered it. 😚
-
Lol Cookie, what a great idea. I actually do know that you can take photos of things, but didn't even think about taking a photo of a recipe. Good thinking :D
-
Screen shots are the way to go. Then sort them into albums Cookie .
Also, when ther is an interesting comment you want to send someone take a screen shot and just mail that. Then they do not have to wade through a whole, page or thread.
I LOVE SCREEN SHOTS!
Gert
-
I have been doing that to send recipes to my DD's and DIL's.
A lot quicker than typing it out or even relaying it over the phone. They can then save or delete when used depending on whether they like it or not.
I love iPadsand iPhones ;D
-
I checked out the mini ipad very cute might get one for Christmas then you can all teach me how to post photos :) I am pretty hopeless with technology :o :o
-
I photograph recipes from library books & also take screen shots from web sites. The ipad is so handy.
H :)

Good to know Hally thanks :)

Hey Gert has your toy arrived? What do you think?
-
Nope it has not. The first I will hear will be that it is now engraved and I am unable to cancel. Then comes the notice that it has been dispatched with a tracking number. Then the game begins with it travelling all around the world until it gets here!
I am not expecting a notice until early Dec. I think there has been some delay. I just hope that Telstra is ready to roll, with the tiny SIM cards they require. I do not want to tether it with the phone as I think it will be cheaper to use the3G on the iPad.
You will be the first to know whe I get the email from Apple.
Gert
-
Was it much cheaper doing it your way? Apple store quotes $369 for the mini
-
Apple products arn not allowed to be discounted. Occasionally JB Hi FI or Myer might have a 10% discount but not often.
The mini iPad for that price would be only 16 GB with wi fi only. I bought the 64 GB with wifi and 3G
Gert
-
Now I understand. Thanks Gert
-
Looking for some of guru Gerts pearls of wisdom please. I have an iPhone 3 with Internet and a pc with broadband. I want an iPad for Christmas but do not want to purchase another Internet package. Can the iPad use my broadband or iPhone Internet using cable or other thingy? I don't want to change my broadband to wifi if I can avoid it.
-
Does your broadband DSL modem at home for your PC have wifi built in ?
Otherwise, you may be able to tether your iPad to your iPhone. I often do this with my iPhone 4 if I'm not at home. You should investigate if your iPhone 3 is capable of tethering.

This is how I put a link in to a recipe using Tapatalk.
1. Using safari or your usual web browser, open the thread with the recipe that you want to link to, and in the web address box, hold your finger down so that you can "select all" and then "copy"
2. Open Tapatalk and open the thread that you want to put the link into
3. Press on the flower icon that is in the bottom right corner of your screen, slightly greyed out.
4. Three options will come up, so click on URL link, and a pop up box to insert a link will appear with "http://". Backspace to delete this, and then hold your finger down, and the option to "paste" will appear. Paste the link, and press OK to bring you back to the "Reply to Topic" page
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/25/ydumudut.jpg)http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10413.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10413.0)
5.here, I have added a link to Amy,s quiches.http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10413.0 (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=10413.0)
That's it!
-
This is how I add an existing photo to a thread using Tapatalk:
1. Click on "Reply to Topic" and type your reply.
2. When you want to add a photo, click on the icon in the bottom righthand corner of your screen that is between the camera icon and the bird icon. It looks like a mountain with a moon or sun in the sky.
3. A pop up box will appear in the bottom right hand corner called "photos" with a number of options. Click on the option where your photo is stored. Mine are usually in the photo roll.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/25/nu4y6a8u.jpg)
4. Tap on the photo that you want to upload.
5. Click on the upload button
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/25/y8e8a6yz.jpg)
6 Another popup box will appear giving you 3 options for photo sizes. I usually choose the small option, but here, I having been choosing the medium option.
7. That's it, but you won't be able to see the photos in your reply until you have pressed the send button.
-
ES, you have just given me a headache. ;D. Thanks for this info. I will take photos of it, send it to my MacBook and print it off. Then I can have a go, step by step. Thanks again.

I am pretty sure you can tether your iPhone 3 but just google it and someone will tell you.
To use your iPad you with no wi fi you will have to cable it to you PC orphoe if posible which defeats the purpose of making it mobile.
Setting up wifi at home is as easy as buying a cheap wifi device like a D link and connecting it to you ADSL modem. Even I could do it. I think it cost me about $80. Without wifi you will have to have 3G and if you tether it to your phone it will cost a lot if you download, upload and use your iPad for surfing the Internet.
If you purchase a micro SIM card for whatever price it is now you will get 12 GBytes of data in one year. I paid $150 for 12 months in Jan. I still have $92. In credit and I use it whenever I am not connected to wi fi. A bit of a waste but I have never run out or worried about it.
If you do not have wifi at home I would consider it. It has nothing to do with your broadband and changing plans. It is just an enabler for using wi if devices in the house. You can enable your iPad to print. from any location if you also have an air printer.
Your iPad will come with wifi anyway so you can use it in places that have wifi like McDonalds for free.
I am certainly no guru and not a tech head. I am totally self taught. There are many websites that are more helpful than I am including Apple. If you can download the apps to your iPhone I mentioned earlier they will give you all the info you need. Go to reply # 206 in this thread.
I refer to,these apps frequently because I keep forgetting.
If you get a SIM card for you iPad it will have a unique number and you will be able to,face time and message to other iPhones for nix.
I know Judy had some problems using her iPad 1. I was trying to help her but did not understand that she did not have wi fi either so what i was telling her was of no use so we were both stumped until someone came to her rescue.
I just figured that everyone has wi fi these days. Costs nothing to use and is cheap to buy the device.
It is like the Apple TV. I did not understand it until I researched it and found that for $99 I could do everything on my iPad while using the TV for the screen. So easy and so cheap I wonder why everyone doesn't have it.
Hope that helps but I am sure others have more knowledge. Mr Google is my best friend .

I am in Tapatalk now. Another way to do it from you iPad.
Type your reply then Look to the left and open your photo album.

Choose a photo like above and click up load.

And if you want it easier still write a reply as usual. Open Tapatalk find your reply , tap on it to edit it then add a photo or link.

Thanks Gert for passing on what you have learnt. Very helpful and most appreciated xox

On the subject of iPads... How awesome is this fridge mount??? http://store.apple.com/au/product/H7333PA/A/belkin-fridge-mount-for-ipad-2 (http://store.apple.com/au/product/H7333PA/A/belkin-fridge-mount-for-ipad-2)

When I changed providers Gretchen, I thought I did end up with a wi-fi thingy. I have no idea what I am doing but as long as I can access the forum when I have problems with my computer or when I am out, for now it will have to do. There was a 1 day iPad course a while back but I can't get away all day to go to something like this. I have to physically be shown what to do and then do it myself - reading about it is no good as I don't understand the jargon.
-
That's really cool thermielove. Would love Santa to bring one of these along with an iPad.
-
Yes Judy it looks like it has Wifi (Wireless).
-
I thought so Rob, thanks.
-
Newbie excitement: just ownloaded Tapatalk HD onto the iPad (have the regular version on the phone)--love the interface and features, particularly the Gallery (attached)! It looks awesome and it's sooo easy to navigate.

I saw that fridge thingy in the Mac shop.
If you are really interested and you have the time there are people on you tube who spend their life showing how to do stuff on the iPad. I don't have the patience for it but if you have a how to question you can be sure that 1.2 million people will be able to show you exactly HOW to do It. I am more of a tap and hope sort of person.
Judy that is the same wi fi thingy I have by the look of it.
I have no idea how any of it works and like you say Judy the jargon is like a secret society. I decided years ago to just accept that it works and I do not care to know how it works. I am more interested In How I can get the most out of it for the least amount of money.
Telstra is like a whole 'Nother world. Dealing with them is learning how to workout dealing with people from a different planet. No one person the the whole of Telstra knows what another person working for Telstra is doing. No departments interact and never let it be said the Bangaladish person is no less informed than the person in the Phillipines . Then the Indian guy will decry, what the Pakistani guy says and the barely English speaking manager in Melbourne will lie about what the almost English speaking guy in Sydney says.
You have to love it. Multiculturalism at it's best with Telstra. And then there are the store staff. Some are are in the loop and others aren't allowed into the loop but neither wants you to know which they are and they pretend not to know each other as well. You can have hours of fun for free in a Telstra shop. They employ a lot of uni students and believe me you can have the most fun with them if you are my age because they try to bamboozle you first With how much they know avout nothing. When they realise you are not stupid they try to bamboozle you with bull dust and when that doesn't work the give up poor things and send you to the manager. The manager has no time and they send you on line and so it starts all, over again. The secret then is to gather all the names you have spoken to, put it in print to the local manager who is unknown to anyone but a few of us in the top secret loop. Getting the local manager's name and number is a game in itself.
I recently had a three hour conversation with a Telstra guy on my mobile. He gave me a credit of $20 on my bill for the call and reduced my Internet bill by $20 a month for ever.
I cannot even begin to imagine the crapola we will hear about the NBN rollout.
Gert

Judy, I know it's hard for you to get out and I'm not sure if there is an apple store near you but they run some great free sessions that go for an hour. When the iPad 1 first came out I did a class at our store and it was great. The details of the classes are on their website.
-
I wish we had a proper Apple shop in Cairns. The one I saw in Perth was awesome. I would do any Mac classes.
Judy I know the iPad one does not have a camera but can you save photos on it and then use Tapatalk or I Instagram if needs be? Mot that you need it because you are great with your computer and camera.
Really just wondering if on the iPad1 if one could email a photo and save it to photos or maybe it does not have a photo app. Also it may not be 3G capable.
I may as well google it. ;D
Gert
-
Oh Gert your description of Telstra was oh so true. I remember not so long ago going round the world with them. Each person I spoke to I noted their name and where they were and the local time. When (after about an hour or so) I came back to Australia I was able to say 'well I have spoken to these people and got no where.'
It annoyed me at first but then I decided I would just play 'round the world 'with them. I even spoke to someone in America on that trip. The problem was n't sorted out either. I love how they have the review at the end of the trip conversation.
'Were we able to help you? Please answer yes, no, not sure yet!'
-
Hours of free entertainment if you play the game. Nothing is ever resolved .
Gert
-
I don't know that we have an apple store here, I like the one in Sydney though. Guess I would have to go into a Telstra store and I don't like my chances there. No time anyway so everything is on hold at the moment and I cannot spend hours on a phone either.
-
No Apple store in Adelaide. Are you having problems with your iPad Judy? Richard could look at it if you are.
-
Judy, you can use the internet on your iPhone with your iPad. You use something called Personal Hotspot.
Go into the settings on your iPhone and choose it. You will be given a password. Go into the settings on your iPad and choose Wi-Fi. Your iPhone will come up in the list. Put in the password and away you go!
As long as you have a NextG network available, you'll be able to get the internet on your iPad using your iPhone as a personal hotspot.
HTH

For anyone who is thinking of getting an iPad. It is not necessary to get one with wifi built it because if you have an iPhone with data you can " tether" your iPad to it or you can get a wireless thingy to use anywhere, sorry don't know all the technical terms but I know I saved about $150 by getting iPad without the built in wifi. there are so many places now that have free wifi also which is great. If you can't get to an apple store You Tube is the place to go for demo videos.
-
Me too GHM, but just be wary when you tether that you really drain your phone battery doing it (but it is very handy specially if you have wifi in most scenarios)
-
Greyhoundmum I did not know you could buy an iPad without wi fi. I thought they all had wifi but not all had 3G and that is why the one with 3G is more expensive.
For me I definitely need both wifi and 3G. Without wi fi I would not be able to use mine in bed to read the forum in the morning!
Did you get your no wi fi 3G only iPad in the States.
Gert
-
I think GH was confusing Wifi and Wireless (ie 3G/LTE/4G). All models have Wifi.
-
Thanks Tarasis I was confused by that as what would be the point of an iPad without wi fi.
Are you buying the new one with retina display or the mini?
Gert
-
MJ, I don't have an iPhone - my granny phone is suitable for my needs.
Glad to see others get confused with wifi etc, all these technical terms leave me for dead.
Katie since I changed over to Bigpond, I can't update apps on the iPad , can't even log into iTunes and still can't receive emails on it either. I downloaded some apps onto the computer but they won't sync (is that the word) to the iPad. I was happy just to be able to access the forum but if the computer goes down, I'd be up the creek as far as hearing from my friends by private email. It doesn't matter what anyone tells me to do, it is all too confusing for me. I've got correspondence back from iTunes telling me how to reset my password, did that and it still doesn't accept it so I've just given up. I know your DH works hard and everyone wants his advice on computers etc so I haven't wanted to bother him with my problems. I haven't been into Telstra at West Lakes for advice as I'm sure they would tell me I have to do it online and that doesn't work for me. Rather than stress myself out when I don't need anymore problems in my life, I have chosen to just let it ride and be content with at least being able to access the forum when I'm out or in bed.
-
yes Gert I meant the 3G. love my iPad!
-
Gert, I'm deciding wether to put in an order online for the mini 3G or wait until Big W or the Apple store get them in. I had a play with one in the Apple store and they are awesome, mine feels so bulky now.
-
JD you need to buy one of the grand kids an iPad so they become experts and can help you out ;D

Judy I'll see what he's doing tomorrow night and if he can, I'll get him to come with me when I pop over to your place. I'm sure he will be able to sort it out.
All he will ask for in return is a couple of biscuits, with no nuts of course!! Or a piece of cake, or some fruitchocs, he is easily pleased ;D
-
JD you need to buy one of the grand kids an iPad so they become experts and can help you out ;D
My 2 yo loves the iPad and at one point even tried to swipe her books (and got annoyed when the pages didn't change!). #badmumalert
-
Thanks Katie, still got fruchocs available - can you believe I still haven't opened one of those packets for myself ;D ;D
I don't want to put DH to too much trouble, once you start trying to sort things out it can go on and on - well for me it can but I suppose anyone who knows what they are doing will not find it so difficult. :-*
CP, the kids have iPads but are not at the stage yet to sort my problems out.
-
Wow those fruchocs wouldn't have lasted that long at our house!
-
yes Gert I meant the 3G. love my iPad!
Now it makes sense to me. LOL!
Gert
-
Judy I don't blame you. You just need someone to reload everything. All easy if you know how but a nightmare if you don't . Leave well enough alone untill help arrives. If it still is not fixed. I will have a go in March.
Meanwhile put your order in for the kids to buy you a new mini iPad. . Give yours to one of the grand kids and it gets happily regifted.
Gert
-
Oops I should have read the whole thread. Help is in the way and price is right.. Two packs of fruitchocks at least!
Thank you Katiej. Love your DH.

If you order on line you will get it on the same day the apple stores get them and if lucky the day before as they work on US time.
Gert
-
Gert my udnerstanding is that only happens if you ordered early on, if you order now you won't get it until after the stores get them but you are at least guaranteed one whereas they could sell out in store.
I was on the Whirlpool forums and it looks like delivery is going to be the 29th for those who ordered early but if you purchase now it's at least a 2 week wait.
-
Bummer wonder.
Gert
-
It's funny how I'm keen to get this as soon as possible and yet more than happy to wait until the 23rd for my SS and would never dream of trying to open a birthday or christmas present before the day. I guess it's the surprise element in gifts that I like.
-
Thanks Tarasis I was confused by that as what would be the point of an iPad without wi fi.
Are you buying the new one with retina display or the mini?
I had the new Retina for a time but I had an issue with the screen (light bleed / uneven colour) so it was returned and rather than get another one the missus bought a Mini for herself for Xmas. Its currently upstairs and I am kind of allowed to use it till its wrapped.
It is a nice device, the weight difference is incredible and it works well. Some things do look a little small and slightly blurry (or pixelated) but you only really notice that if coming from a Retina device. (My wife doesn't really see much difference between the screen of an iPad 2 & 3 - which I find shocking) The stereo speakers on the mini are nice as well, it sounds that bit better than the iPad 3 & 4
Ultimately both the iPad 3/4 & the Mini are good devices and I can see using both (iPad 4 more for videos, web browsing, gaming. Mini for reading, quick videos, music, general usage) if I can get away with it.
We sold off our iPad 1 the other day for about €175 which wasn't too bad, sad to see it go though as it was the beginning of a new era of computing.
-
All interesting Tarasis. Glad your DW got the mini. shame on you for using it! LOL not much point in wrapping it now.
Interesting about the retina display. I was tossing up but the mini will be great in the handbag. In fact I already bought a mini friendly one. I just hope the Telstra shop has the right mini sim for it when it get's here.
I think I am addicted to my iPad . Have hardly used my new iPhone and have only had to charge it once since October.
The I world is a separate planet .

This morning I woke up to two emails from Apple. One is the message that my mini iPad has left Shenzhen China, arrived in Hong Kong and will soon be leaving there.
The estimated delivery day is Monday Dec 3.
The second was the invoice!
Gert
-
Exciting news Gert, looking forward to hearing your own thoughts.
-
So exciting Gert. I'm still procrastinating.
-
Hope it arrives soon Gert
I am getting the mini for Christmas :o :o
-
If Apple says it will arrive in Monday it will arrive on Monday. Last time I saw the parcel post driver enter the estate so when he came by my house I was waiting out the front. He had a load full of IPads to be delivered all over Cairns! He laughs ever time he delivers something here.
Once he delivered a toaster from POK. The next day he delivered a toaster from POK! I had ordered it for me for my birthday and unbeknownst to me my DH had ordered the same thing a day later. The other day when I got my POK parcel he asked if it was another toaster. On Monday he will say "not another iPad”.
Love my delivery man.
Gert
-
He probably loves you too Gretch for keeping him in a job. With the Internet people are writing less letters but get more parcels from online shopping. At least your DH knows what you want and to shop from your fave shop. Mine just shrugs and says he can't buy anything cos I'm so fussy (I am to a point, cos a couple of times he's bought an item of clothing or piece of jewellery that is so not me that it would never be worn and that's a waste of money not to exchange it (yes, I know its the thought))
-
My Christmas pressie has come early as DH is too impatient to wait until Christmas to give it to me.. I'm typing this on my new iPad 4 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Lucky you ES, I wouldn't be able to wait for Christmas either.
I've had a visit from Katie & her DH tonight and he was kind enough to do a few iPad jobs for me. I can now actually send and receive emails on my iPad and update my apps. Every woman should have a DH like Katie (unless of course you are clever and can do these things yourself ;D). What a lovely visit it was.
-
What a legend Katie's DH is :-*
-
How lovely for you JD. I'm glad Katie and Her DH were able to help you with your iPad. Technology can be so frustrating sometimes , but amazing when it works. I was chuffed with myself the other day when I finally worked out how to get emails to send from my iphone. Google was my friend :)
I can't wait to try taking a photo with my new iPad.
-
Go on ES - take a photo now and post it!
1. Take photo
2. Email it to yourself, and press bcc and select smallest size
3. Open up your email in the inbox and touch the pic and hold.
4. Select 'save to camera roll'
5. In you forum topic reply, click additional options and "attach file" - voila!
-
Ok CP, I'll give it a go. If it works, you will see a picture of my energetic cat (LOL)
-
It does indeed seem to have worked. Hi Kitty cat :)
Congrats on all the new toys and yay for Judy, I'd have gladly helped but I'm a touch far away.
-
That's nice Rob, thank you.
-
That's good news Judy. ES enjoy your gift.
-
Glad it worked ES. Your cat looks very content :D
-
My Christmas pressie has come early as DH is too impatient to wait until Christmas to give it to me.. I'm typing this on my new iPad 4 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
How wonderful ES . That is great. Beautiful screen eh?
I think there will be more under other's tree.
Gert
-
Judy , Katij is indeed lucky to,have a clever DH and he is wonderful to help you too. I am sooooo happy you got some help.
Gert
-
Good news Judy, and ES what a wonderful gift.
I am keeping fingers crossed for one for Christmas ;D

There's a discussion on another thread about photos and I'm trying to change my photo size.
I found this post but my tapatalk doesn't look like this. I have tapatalk HD so I don't know if that makes a difference. I've checked and the app is up to date.
When I upload photos, this is what it looks like
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/29/emure8em.jpg)
I don't get the icons that Katie gets and I don't get an option to change the picture size.
Any suggestions?
-
Mine looks exactly like yours Chrissa :'(
-
That is interesting as those icons do not appear on my Tapatalk at all. .
Gert
This is what I see.(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/29/e6u3uvev.jpg)
-
I just downloaded the free version and guess what?. The screen did show up.
But the free version allows you to up load only 30 photos.
Gert
-
So mystery solved. Have uploaded 27 photos from the free version so when . I reach 30 we will see what happens. I must have had just the free version from the beginning before I bought the HD?
Thanks ES and Chrissa. There is always an explanation.
Gert
-

Gert
Ok. So I go to iTunes to download the free version. Guess what. No free version there. There's a $2.99 version and the HD version which I already have.
Grrr. I'm all geeked out for now ;D
I'm going to work. It will be more fun that trying to work this out.
PS. Gert in my searches I saw mention that when you reach then 30 photo limit, you have to purchase a hosting app for the photos
-
I was going to go for the free one too to try it, but gone, just our luck
-
Did you go to iTunes or directly the App Store. I just did it and it was free. Very frustrating.
Gert
-
Go to the Apps store search Tapatalk and you will see it. IPAD app for free right next to the HD version.
Still there.
Gert
-
Now (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/29/mumatyry.jpg)
Gert
-
I had the free one and I'm sure when I got to the 30 photos (surprisingly quickly) I had to purchase the app, it wasn't a lot of money from memory. Mine works the same as in the pictures.
Judy fantastic that Katie's DH was able to work it out for you, it's so frustrating when you know it's not working properly and you can't figure out why.
ES - that's very exciting, the screen quality is fantastic on the 4's.
-
Yes Katie is very lucky to have an IT guy for a DH but then so am I now that they have paid a visit and got me sorted. When you know what you are doing it's so easy to work out problems - I wouldn't see them if they jumped out of the iPad and punched me in the nose ;D
-
Go to the Apps store search Tapatalk and you will see it. IPAD app for free right next to the HD version.
Still there.
Gert
Nope not free - $2.99
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/29/4ejagyvu.jpg)
-
Blimey you gotta be quick!
Amazing. We must have been seconds apart!
Also interesting you cannot resize photos in the HD version. Or at least I can't.
Gert
-
I'm not seeing it free either. AppShopper is a useful site for tracking apps to see when they drop in price
http://appshopper.com/search/?cat=&platform=all&device=all&sort=rel&dir=asc&search=tapatalk
So for instance Tapatalk HD hasn't had a price drop at all, but Tapatalk non HD recently dropped to €0.89 from its normal €2,69 unfortunately I failed to grab it at the time.
-
Good one Tarsis. Thanks.
Gert
-

Was it that you had just not added your accounts to the iPad?
Gert
-
Something like that Gretchen, I had no idea why I couldn't send or receive emails with my bigpond a/c or why my apps wouldn't upgrade but within a few seconds he had my email sorted and my apps began upgrading (dozens of them :D :D). He just looked at some number on the back of the modem, wifi thingy and went from there - very quickly :o He's also put all the games into little boxes to tidy it up.
-
Now you are really connected!
Gert
-
So good to hear Judy, makes things that little bit easier and what a wonderful DH Katie has
-
I agree suzanne, he is a very obliging and clever man.
Yes Gretchen and if I'm home it automatically cuts out the 3G and uses my wi-fi - I think that's how the story goes and I'm using the right terminology :D :D You gave me that advice right at the beginning but it wouldn't happen for me. I am currently disabling email notification on heaps of forum topics in a bid to reduce my incoming emails on both the computer and the iPad. Life is just a little hectic here at the moment :-))
-
My iPad has landed in Sydney! It WILL be here by Monday.
Gert
-
That's great Gert.
My ipad tapatalk is like ES's. I had to buy something or other after 30 photos too. So far I am very pleased.
-
Yes, I don't have the HD version, and I had to pay something too so I could upload more photos.
The screen is very crisp on my new iPad ( except that the kids have smeared it with their grubby mits- I need to insist on clean hands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Gert, I can't wait to hear what you think about the iPad mini. I decided on the full size 4 because I mostly use it at home, and if I'm out, I just used my iPhone.however, there was considerable debate in our house about it :)
-
Let you know on Mon. I think I won't have to take my Kindle everywhere as well . Ifi were really lucky it might arrive in Cairns over night but........
Gert
-
I've just removed the protective cover off the screen. It's a lot clearer now. LOL!!!!!!!!
-
*groan* Yes, that will make it look a little better. That said I'm paranoid and I never run an iPhone or iPad without a screen protector.
-
I like my screen protector (non reflective) as it helps my fingers glide over the screen
-
Yes, I will put a protector on the screen soon. It makes me laugh though as it reminds me of when I first got my iPhone and left the protective film on it. I couldn't understand why I couldn't hear anyone on the telephone very well I thought that there was something wrong with the phone. DH eventually pointed out to me that the film was covering the microphone. Once I removed it, the phone worked perfectly!
Once I realised this, I felt like dyeing my hair blonde ;D ;D ;D
-
Gert quite a few on the whirlpool forum had there's arrive today. I'm going to try the stores in the morning before going to work and if I don't get one ill just order direct though apple on the weekend.
-
It's the white ones that were selling like hot cakes when DD got hers. Plenty of black ones, but there was a 1 week wait for white.love them, they're so light and cute.
-
I have to say the black looks best, the slate look is just spot on (and surpassingly is the one my wife bought)
-
I have tried screen protectors but find they are easy to wipemover with lens cloths or microfibre cloths so don't bother.
Gert
-
The non reflective also doesn't show finger marks as much as it is not a glossy finish.
-
DD insisted I have a screen protector for mine and I'm glad now as I have to fight DH for it and he often has grease ingrained on his fingers. It's easy to wipe over. I used to love reading the ipad in front of tv at night. Now if I pause DH has grabbed it. I don't want to ask for it back as he has only just learned to use it. :'( :'(
-
Wss at the Doncaster Apple store at 9am and they didn't have them in yet, the Chadstone store did have them but I had to get to work so couldn't drive over there. I've just called the Doncaster store (11.20am) and they now have them but won't put one on hold and I can't get there until after work. looks like I'll need to wait a little longer.
-
Cookie, time to buy the mini!

Just thought I would track my IPad and it has left the depot in Cairns. On it's way to me any minute. Happy Dance.
Gert

sounds good Gert.
-
I'm jealous - trying to finish up my work as quickly as I can and then will might make another trip to the shops. I'm working on the weekend anyway so will just add another hour or two to that - thankfully my boss is in London!
-
You could be right Gert. DH is hoping DD decides to buy a mini and give him her ipad 2. :D :D :D :D
I'm too scared to go and look at the mini, having recently bought another expensive kitchen gadget. ;) ;)
-
If you are going to subscribe to iTunes Match make sure you do it at the $24.99 per year price and not the $34.99 - its the same thing only dearer! Weird thing is, they don't even match their own rates.
-
It's here
Gert(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/11/30/getu9uha.jpg)
-
How exciting. A late night for you tonight Gert?

That is willpower though, it's still in the box.
-
Synching it now .
Gert

Woohoo Gert, I got one after work as wel. Decided to go with the 32gb black. Haven't had much time to play yet but it's a great size and very light, much more portable than my iPad 3. I'll put the IPad 3 on eBay in the morning.
-
Yay! Christmas sure is early this year ;D
-
Gert does your Smart Cover make the ipad go into sleep mode? The one I have on my old ipad does but this one isn't sitting flat - think I've got a dud :-[
-
It should (not that we've bought one yet) do unless it's turned off in settings.
If you don't fit it but lay it on the screen does it turn off?
-

Yes it does. Make sure you have it attached correctly.
Gert

I hope I finally have my mini sorted. This morning I had a 3g micro sim fitted and they just transferred the account to the mini from my other iPad so that was a good quick service at the Telstra shop.
I will enjoy reading on it as well because it is so light.
I had to throw in the mango!
Gert
-
I'm sure it's a dud cover, we have the smart covers on our full size iPads and never had a problem. This one doesn't sit quite flat on the surface of the iPad. I'll leave it a few days and see if it flattens out, if not I'll take it back and get them to have a look. It's a great size and I really like using it, so light and much more portable than the full size ones. I still prefer the feel of the kindle for reading because it fits perfectly with the size of my hand so can't see it replacing the kindle. Will hopefully get to the Telstra shop today to swap over the sim but I have a portable wifi device I can use as an interim measure so not in a great hurry to get that sorted.
-
You said you were going to put your other iPad on eBay Wonder and I am thinking maybe someone here would buy it from you.
What a shame to have to take the cover back. I don't think it will will flatten out. Bummer!
I am loving my mini!
Gert
-
Great idea Gert and no fees to pay. I am interested in buying it wonder but how much do you want for it? You can on me if you want. Ok too if you want to sell it on eBay.
-
Interesting reading about your experience with the iPad mini. I don't think I'd like it. The iPad is small enough for me. My eyes are pretty bad.
Love my iPad!
-
I'm too scared to go and look at the mini, having recently bought another expensive kitchen gadget. ;) ;)
Cookie, what did you buy? :)
I'm thinking of buying DH a mini for Christmas, it would be helpful for him at work mainly to access notes and information. He uses his iPhone in the same manner now but the mini with a bigger screen would be more beneficial I think.
-
Gert, Kimmy - I hadn't even thought of putting it on here. I'll have a look at prices on ebay over the next few days and let you know.
I'm loving the mini MJ, the writing etc doens't actually seem much smaller but it's so much lighter and more portable. I rarely took my iPad when I was going out except if I knew I was going to having some waiting around, now as soon as sort out a sleeve case for it I'll be taking it everywhere. It's slightly too big for the sleeve I have for my kindle which is a shame because it would be perfect.
-
A good tip for travelling with your iPad.

Thanks for the link Gert, I have sent it on to my brother who is going to Romania and other nearby places next year.
-
Well I have just spent a lovely hour or so reading this thread and I want an IPad for sure but which one? Mini, no. 4 not sure. How is the mini going Gert?
-
Rainbow my DH is the person in the world who hated technology the most. He is really agro about it. However after taking the iPad to South Australia with us, and he saw what it could do, and so easily, he now loves them. In fact I often have to battle him for it.
They are absolutely perfect for travelling and I adore sitting on the lounge checking the forum.
You will love it.
-
Thanks cookie, I have been searching and looking at iPad 4 with WiFi and cellular 32gb, can I ask what size you have, we will be travelling over east next year so I like the idea of the pad for staying in touch :)
-
It is all about the size and where you are using it . I love them both. The iPad is perfect for anywhere in the house and pool but heavy and cumbersome to travel with on a plane.
I love the mini to bits for putting In my handbag . I take it everywhere. Of course I am addicted and have a SIM card with 3G in it as wifi so I can use it all the time. It will be great for travelling by plane.
If I were using it for travelling by car I would get a SIM for the bigger one as well just because it has the bigger keyboard
I think they compliment each other .
The mini is a good substitute for the. Kindle so I need only carry the mini when say visiting the doctor or waiting for coffee as I can always read. Now I carry just the mini where I used to carry the iPad and the Kindle. The mini is great for making audio memos too. Some friends I send these memos to instead of emails. Ilove that it is not obtrusive for taking pics in a restaurant. I really am a nutter for the thing.
Of course I could use my iPhone for all of the above but it is just too small to easily use though it takes good photos.
If you are just using it at home then I say the iPad but if you like never to be without it get the mini with 3G .
My DH at age 83 is. In love with his iPad as well and uses it to watch things on the BBC as well as listening to radio from around the world . He can do his emails while watching the news.
I bought an Apple TV so we can watch anything from the IPad on the big screen. I can rent a movie on the iPad and see it on the TV.
I rarely use my laptop or PC anymore as I can do anything on the iPad with my downloaded apps including printing documents. Having said that I sure would like a MacAir!!
Gert
-
Thanks Gert, do you download to kindle and then transfer to iPad?
-
Before I bought my first Kindle I downloaded the program for PC bought a few books just to see if I liked to read in that format. I did so when I bought my first Kindle I registered it online and all books downloaded on the computer or the Kindle, arrive nicely at both. Then I bought another and another Kindle which I registered as Gerts 1, 2,3 Kindle. So my DH. DD automatically get all the books I download.
Then I bought My iPads and they all have Kindle apps . So now I have registered with Amazon Kindle for PC, , 3 Kindles . i used to have my DS and grandchildrens KIndles registered to me as well but they recently registered them to themselves since moving to India. My DD recently bought a mini iPad and has the Kindle app. The Kindle app on the iPads automatically updates VIA wifi or by the PC.
I think it is very generous of Amazon that you can have so many devices to receive the one book. Just wish we got them as cheaply as the US.
Gert
-
I think Gert has given you great advice Rainbow, she is the guru. I found in the van my ipad3 was fine. I have 64GB with wifi and cellular. We found a few grey nomads were being given iPads by their kids to keep in touch.
-
Thanks Gert and Cookie good advice to work on :)
-
Have a mini ipad and when I go into the forum and go out of it, it does not log me out. What am I doing wrong? I am still showing up as being logged on. ???
Marie

I can't help sorry. I always stay logged on here and on the PC.

Yvette have you downloaded Tapatalk HD yet?
Gert
-
Gert I have downloaded tapatalk is there a tapatalk hd?
-
Gert just looked at hd version what is the difference?
-
First post from iPad.
Thanks for your help
Marie
-
The free one allows you to look but not edit. After so many posting of photos youcando no more . The paid version allows endless postings , photos and editing
Gert
-
I paid 2.99 for tapatalk so I think that is the same one there is also a 5.99 tapatalk hd app
-
I think you are good with the $2.99.
Now get registered and find this forum and sign in.
Go to reply 275 in this thread and read from there on how to add photos.

Thanks Gert and Cookie it is ridiculously easy

Sh don't tell everyone, let them think we are clever. Ha haha
-
Yvette, do you have the ipad mini. I don't seem to be able to get my photo small enough. ???
Marie
-
Marie I have the normal iPad not he mini
-
I paid for the $5.49 tapatalk version but could never get the pics small enough, as not given the choice of sizes. Always felt a bit guilty for taking up so much room on the page. I now do the way Rob showed.
-
Testing to see if photo works
-
Yeah it worked, thanks CP I ended up using Rob's method. I could crop the photos but when I tried to post them on the forum it said they were still too big.
Marie
-
What a little cutie. You've always got to email them first to yourself and choose the small size. But you've worked it out so that's great.
-
What a gorgeous dog Marie :)
CP thanks for that tip as I always select medium which is why they are too big.
Must try it to see if it works for me :)
-
Yes, she is a little cutie, sitting at my feet at the moment. Loves company.
CP thanks again, it has been bugging me since Christmas day. I did select the small size when emailing. So happy now. ;D
Marie

Well done Marie.

Can I put on an avatar from my iPad ???
I have no idea whether I can do this or not ;)
-
I have big troubles doing it on the computer, but DD put one on my twitter account easily the other day so I am sure you can.
Gert or someone will be round soon I am sure.
-
Thanks Cookie as I haven't got a clue where to start ;)
I dont have twitter or Facebook so hopefully someone may be able to help.
Not in any hurry . :)
-
I put mine on from iPad. What part don't you understand?
-
;D all of it ;D
I don't have a clue where to start ???
-
Before you start, either take a photo of eg. yourself or choose which one you'll use from your photos.
1. Click on "Profile" (just under Search at the top)
2. See Modify Profile ... Click on Forum Profile Information
3. Upload my own picture (select the one you'll be using)
4. Save changes.
See how you go ...
-
Thanks CP :D
Do I do this through Tapatalk?
-
No, I would just do it on the normal log in interface
-
Thanks so much CP.
Have to go out now so will have a play with it this evening.
Will let you know how I go :)
-

Very very becoming, Gert!! Don't forget to bring it to Adelaide in August!! You could almost wear it on the plane . .!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well I did it bought an iPad, so so impressed, I downloaded the Kindle app Gert and all my books from Kindle are now on my iPad, magic have downloaded tapia talk. Going to try a photo😍🐞(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/01/03/e4upege9.jpg)
-
Looks like you've got it all under control!!! Well done!!! Great photo!! :)
-
Well done rainbow. That is great. You will go crazy taking photos now.
I have really taken to audio memo. Much fun sitting and talking to,your friends on your iPad. Then send by email and they can listen and reply at their leisure .
Rainbow don't forget you can message friends with I devices and include photos as well. My DD just bought the mini and wanted a cover so I went to a shop took a photo, messaged it to her and she said yes all within a minute or two. Too easy.
Good to download iPad tips and tricks from the App Store. One free and the other paid and worth whatever it was because you can always refer to it. I use it frequently.
Gert
-
Which one do you use Gert. I have now downloaded tips and tricks thanks good info in there 😊🐝
-
For new iPad owners I recommend two apps ABC iView for watching what you missed or ignored on the ABC . Good for when there is nothing on TV. Also BBC iplayer. The free version gives you some good stuff from the BBC but the subscription for one year was a great buy as my DH can always find something to watch in bed when he can't sleep. Well he says he can't sleep but I hear snoring!
I can also recommend the Apple TV for around $100 for watching anything on your iPad or iPhone on your normal TV. Easy and neat.
We have been watching some French and Saunders specials which are a lot of fun.
Gert

Well done Rainbow

Hasn't worked for me as the box that says choose file after selecting "I will upload my own picture" isn't highlighted m :(
-
Lovely new avatar Gert.
Great effort Rainbow. I can imagine how pleased you were, I certainly would be.
-
Another good app is SBS ON DEMAND. :)
-
Thanks for that mama fergie, just downloaded, great app 😍
-
I love it as it has a great variety of programmes and none of us have time to watch everything we want to on tv.
Modern technology is amazing :D
When it works ;)
-
MF have you selected first, and then you should be able to browse your file?
Audio memo, hmn will need to check this out. Think my DD might do this with her friends...
-
How do I select it CP. Do I select from my photos on my iPad?
I click on upload my photo but then the choose file box isn't highlighted so when I click on it nothing happens.
I must be doing something wrong as all of our iPads have the same functions. ???
Wish I had a technical brain LOL

We have apple tv, still in box, one day :)
-
MF get your photo from your stockpile in IPad ie. your photo Library. (You cannot select a photo that your iPad cannot access ie. that is stored on your camera or PC)
One if the important things to remember is - do not put a mental hurdle up as this is very easy to do. Try it out, and if still no luck PM me your home phone and on Monday when I come back to Perth I can talk over the phone.
We have got Apple TV and it is prob closer to $150 to set up. About $130 for the Apple TV and $20 for the HD thingy cord that most people need. I did a killer uTube walking exercise thingy that went for 45 mins in the lounge room which would be impossible to do just from your computer, and I think its quite good value for money as far as apple goes. I got most of the way thru the installation process before having o call in teenage neighbour. He hit a stumbling block too, but then he asked Siri and then 5 mins we later we were up and running.
-
Thanks CP. we have apple tv also. Will keep trying and if no luck I will call you.
It's so kind of you to offer your help :)
Hope you are having a good time wherever you are :)
-
Gracetown 3 days ;D

Lovely CP. Enjoy it.

Enjoy your time away CP

Have a nice break CP, it's lovely having somewhere to escape from your normal day to day life.

Will think of you in that lovely house and the view, enjoy😘🐢
-
Have a great time CP.
A lovely part of WA and so relaxing :)

In response to a few pages back, I'm with Gert - I use my iPad for about 90% of my computing needs (with some iPhone), and the laptop on the odd occasion (like now). Really it handles all my general needs: reading the web, recipes, watching videos, listening to music, playing games and so on. Beyond wanting a machine to serve up files, to write software on and play the odd intensive game I really don't need a computer these days.
We have an Apple TV too, its either used for renting a movie (from mostly the US store, but also UK & Germany), watching the odd purchased TV program (German or US stores) and streaming TV programs acquired from elsewhere (or ripped from my DVD's) *cough*. For that last one I have a Mac Mini running a program called Serve To Me which serves up videos & music to the iPad app Stream To Me, you can then shunt it over AirPlay to the Apple TV and it works a treat. (Serve To Me works off the filesystem & not iTunes)
For music I have in iTunes (and thats a lot), I use Mediatap on the Mac Mini which interacts with the iTunes Library and shares it to me either over the local network or via the internet (great for my iPhone & when visiting a friend) to an app called Audiotap. (In case anyone points out that iTunes has home sharing in both the Music and Video apps, yes it does but when you have a large library of over 25000 tracks it takes a LONG time to load. Nearly 3 minutes, where Audiotap does it in seconds)
Apologies if the last two paragraphs are over anyone's head.
I can't wait to see what the iPad "5" brings, after feeling the weight of the mini I want the new iPad to weigh that light. (I like the Mini and agree that it is a compliment to the bigger iPad. I think that both have their place in a home, if you can afford them.)
-
I was going to get Apple TV, does anyone know if I can watch my stuff from BBC iplayer on it?
dont think DH will be too happy though. all tv cabling is concealed in the wall he wont want a lead sticking out from the back of the tv. Not sure if we have one of those cable already in the wall. do those with Apple TV use a lot? I am going to get some UK itunes vouchers so i can watch the new Downton Abbey not out in Australia yet.
-
You could via Airplay. Works well, we do it for the odd show we want to jointly watch :)
-
GHM you do need one cable.
I use Apple TV especially for BBC Iplayer as I wanted to watch the entire Lark Rise to Candleford . I don't know if it was ever shown in Australia.
Series 3 of Downton Abbey starts soon in Australia.
Gert
-
Im looking forward to Downton. I found a series on BBCiplayer that I had never heard of here called bodies, it is a hospital set drama about an incompetent consultant obstetrician, makes for interesting viewing especially for nurses!
-
My wife enjoyed that show. Though they (BBC) scupered her watching it as they removed the second season she was watching. (Due to broadcast rights issues, it happens periodically. Another example is Alas Smith and Jones which initially had 4 seasons available here in Germany, but now only seasons 1 & 4)
-
"Series 3 of Downton Abbey starts soon in Australia.
Gert"
Ooh when when when?

Thank you!

Gave DD my old iphone as I got new one yesterday. My previous one someone gave me when I went to England so I had a non Apple unlock here . My silly DD first thing she did last night was plug it is an upgrade the ios which means it has reverted back to its old carrier - I did tell her not too!!!!
-
Interesting. I renewed my 3G on my micro sim for my iPad. It cost $180 for one year for 12 GB but Telstra rolled over the $85 I still had on Last years account.
Amazing.
Gert
-
Gretchen, does that mean you have $180 + $85 for the next 12 months or did it cost you $180 minus the $85 to get the next 12 gb?
-
Ghm, aren't you tempted to say "I told you so". Gert same here but I"m sure they did that last time I recharged about 9 months ago, maybe because there was still time to use up.
-
Amazingly I have $265 to use until 2014 .i am stoked .
Gert
-
Well that is nice to hear - well done Telstra.
-
Telstra do that with prepaid phones and broadband. As long as you pay before the due date. At least they can do one thing properly.
-
Telstra do that with prepaid phones and broadband. As long as you pay before the due date. At least they can do one thing properly.
Don't get me started on Telstra. Who,has that SOAP BOX now?
Gert
-
Make sure the soapbox has room for lots of people to stand next to you.
-
I'd be right there with you on that one Gert ;D
Marie
-
Wish there was an app for Android :(
-
And on the subject of Telstra , we have not had the Telstra network for 24 hours up here. No phone , no Internet. It is if we were w third world country. Something happens 1600 kilometres away and Cairns has no network.
Still small stuff compared to the SE of Queensland but has nothing to do with the floods. So much for a NBN . as if that will happen any time soon!
Gert
-
It makes you wonder doesn't it?
-
When I look at the forum on my I pad, I get a lot of delete signs. Am I the only one?

Mine's fine using safari Alexis but at times a lot of us get photos of one member or another all over the place. Strange things do happen but they go away usually.
-
I haven't ever had that Alexis. As Judy says some of us get weird things on our iPad.
-
I have had similar. Just wait and it seems to go away. ;D
-
I have had similar. Just wait and it seems to go away. ;D
Same, I had that a couple of weeks ago on the iPad. At the same time it wasn't displaying like that on the computer. Weird, but like the others have said it does go away.(hmn, if its like the flu and it eventually goes away I hope it doesn't mean its a virus of some sort :-\ though Apple is usually better than the others at fielding off viruses)
-
Thanks, ladies. I hope it's a short burst of the "flu"
-
I always use my iPad on this forum, haven't experienced that at all Alexis?
Have you tried both minimizing the app and re booting your iPad?
More times than not, this will fix most hiccups :)
-
Thanks, GP. I'll give it a go.
-
I've had that more than a few times Alexis, I'm not sure what causes it but it does pass. It's either Safari getting s it's knickers in a twist or its getting passed some bad data and that breaks the rendering.
-
Thanks, Tarasis. It's fine today! Computers ???
-
I have just. Found a new app. It was in today's paper. It is called snaprecipes. It is partnered with Oz Harvest donating 5% of every app sale. It costs $1.99.
You can photograph your recipes from anywhere ( a magazine in the doctors surgery) and file them with notes etc. it is pretty easy to use as I can use it. Now when I want to tear recipes out of magazines I can just photograph them into here. There are heaps of categories to file the recipes under.
I'm loving it. If I decide later not to keep it I can delete it ( I think, as I haven't tried to delete any yet)
-
ok, have just downloaded it. I have been taking photo's of recipes and just keeping them in an album but I like the idea of being able to take notes. Thx cookie :-*
-
I do,that too CP. I'll have. Look at the app though.
Gert
-
That's what I had been doing too CP. I liked the idea of having them sorted and the cost was minimal.
-
I agree. I just been adding some recipes and its a great app.
-
Oh great! I hope that App is in the Google Play Store too....I'm forever taking photos of recipes for later...but I can never be bothered searching through all my photos to find what I'm after, this app sounds like it will solve my problem!
-
Tapatalk for the iPhone upgrade.

I am having trouble with the App Store. When I go to download something. Eg the Karen Martini book it tells me I don't have an account for the US one and need to get an account for Australia. I am sure I haven't done anything to the machine except use it up here at Monkey Mia.
Can anyone help me please? In simple language. ;) :)
-
Interesting. A friend of mine just got some SPAM re my apple I'd at their email addy.
Try setting up another account using the same info. Wouldn't hurt. Do you really need this App??? LOL!
Gert
-
Thanks Gert.
-
I have solved the problem thanks to Gert. I went to the settings and called up App Store etc and it asked for my password so after I put it in things are working well again. I would never have thought of going to settings, dumbo me. ;)
-
I'm the first to admit my total ignorance here. I'm using an ipad that belongs to my DD. I have a file of TMX recipes on my PC (word in windows) that I 'd like to transfer/add to the ipad . . is there any way I can do this? ???
-
If you don't know how to use Drop Box or organise PDFfiles then the easiest was is to either email them individually or as a folder. But first go to settings, mail, add account. Put your email address there, set password. Then go to mail where you will see your email address. You will see your address in INBOXES below that you will see accounts. Open your address it will slide to mailboxes, on the top you will see EDIT. Tap edit and at the bottom you will see ADD mailbox. Type in Thermomix recipes then tap DONE at the top.
Go to your PC and email the recipes one by one if you have to do it that way. When they arrive go to Mail tap your message, go to the top and tap edit, you will now see at the bottom Delete, Move, Mark. There is a button next to your message, tap that then tap move . It will side to mailboxes then just tap the mailbox and it will move.
I recommend these three apps for all the help a novice will need. IPad Secrets- Tips and Tricks. IPad Secrets Vol2 Geekier and IPhone Secrets. All three are the Blue ones. I think they cost but not much and are worth it believe me as they will save you a lot is angst.
I am sure there are others who will explain other ways to transfer files from your PC to your iPad but tedious as it may be for a novice to do it one by one it is pretty easy in the end. There are other programs and apps you could use like Pages and Quick Office if you want to bother.
Gert
-
Thanks a million, Gert . . will get those apps you recommended asap. thanks for taking the time to explain all that in so much detail . .I really appreciate it!! :)

No problem. I want everyone to have an iPad because it really is easy to use and is great for cooks for shopping etc . Always have mine in case I need a recipe. I find the phone just too small. Yes it is just as easy to use but I love my mini iPad for being able to actually read a recipe.
I will tell ya soon about another absolutely essential thing for your iPad or tablet or device or kindle or kobo. Just waiting on the postie and if it is good as I know it will be then oh boy you will want one. Watch this space.
Gert
-
I can't wait to here what it is Gert. i love my Ipad mini and while I have an iPhone I much prefer the mini.
-
Watching and waiting Gert, I have found my iPad just the best and I love technology, anything new and I want to know, I had an app recommended called appsgonefree which gives you free apps each day to down load, had some good ones, others not that interesting but I check each day 😄😄😄
-
Thanks Gert and Rainbow.
Gert helped me so much on the Gracetown Retreat. I have most of the 'help' apps she suggested and they are great.
I don't know how I managed before my iPad. I think DH has convinced several people to buy them since we have been here. He must have added to our photos by 500 in the last 3 weeks.
-
Glad you got the problem solved cookie
Eg the Karen Martini book
Who, what, when, where? When I went to the German iBookstore it lists an untitled book for her at €13,99. Nothing useful :)
-
She is a lady who is on a garden and home show here. She has released quite a few books.
-
I will tell ya soon about another absolutely essential thing for your iPad or tablet or device or kindle or kobo.
Is it the stand thingy from SuperKitchenMachine? (Ya killin me Gretch ;D) I can see myself needing one of those when I get back. I love my mini, it recharges quicker than the ipad3 and its very light & portable for popping in a handbag. The iP3 is great for when you need a bigger screen, and I have a net book which is great for normal PC work and a good backup for me in my business.
-
Yes you are right . I ordered them as soon as I saw them in Helene's shop ( I think it was the first day because nobody had mentioned them yet…. I wanted to be the first to have one in Australia so I kept mum about it .)… I ordered some for myself and think they will arrive in the next few days. Maybe today. I wanted this Kribbitt so bad so PM'd Helene to ask if they were as good as and she said it was the very best she had ever seen. I have bought two hopeless useless stands in the past and this one looks amazing.
This is a brand new product just invented so no one will know about it. It looks so versatile and can be used for every device. I also, like that it is a local product in Canada made by a known inventor and not a Chinese knockoff with crap manufacturing. This guy makes each one himself and he made it for his children so it must be solid and something young and old can use easily. It is flexible so you would be able to type at your best angle plus it does not move when you type due to the non something or other rubber like stuff covering the hard wire something. Anyway when I get my three I will but a pic here. If it is as good as then I will order two more for gifts because everyone I know with a iPad, iPad mini or reader will want it so if I were you I would order two now so you have it when you get home.
Yes the mini recharges much faster and is great for the handbag for travelling and for shopping when you are out. Easier to type on than the phone but I love my iPad at home for business stuff and for watching missed TV shows in bed. I love that this stand will make it hands free as I really get tired holding it as I do with my Kindle. Hard to grab that glass of wine while watching a show and reaching out!.
Not mentioning it on the shopping thread because those crazy girls might empty the shop when they see it. I have watched all the VDO's on You Tube and have read all the stuff I could find on Kribbitt man Paul and really want him to succeed . It is really a clever thing. Helene told me she has met him, likes him and that is good enough for me. Also I think he is charity minded as well so it is nice to give him support
Gert

Just bought one Gert. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. i don't very often look at Helene's site and have been dropping hints to the family for ages about getting me a kitchen stand so I'll give this one a go.

Mine arrived Wonder and I am in love. Amazing stand . I am going way over the top. but it is one of the cleverest things I have ever seen. The man is a genius.
Hope yours arrives quickly.

:o Woh! That's a big photo! How do you reduce them before posting to Tapatalk? Gert?
Hi MJ, not sure if you've found a way.
Tapatalk on iPad asks you for the size of your photo before posting it. It has 3 standard options: small, medium, large. I think medium is the best size as it doesn't require scrolling when viewing the pics via safari. Small is too tiny.
-
:o Woh! That's a big photo! How do you reduce them before posting to Tapatalk? Gert?
Very good question!!!
If you take a photo with an iPhone you can send it by email to yourself and reduce it before sending.when you get it you can save it and use that. If you take it with a camera you can photoshop it on your computer. If you take it with an iPad I have no idea. I am not a photo person but Tarsis or SueJen may be able to tell us.
You can also upload indirectly from your computer to here but I don't think from your iPad or phone.
Love it if someone could tell us. We could put it in the tips and tricks thread.
Sorry not any help.
Gert
Hi Gert,
I've used a very simple tool called Imagewell on my MacBook for cropping and resizing photos. Was provided by my company when I worked as a web developer. Photoshop is too fiddly for my :D
Uploading directly from ipad to tapatalk is very easy. Have yet to try it on my iPhone.
-
That's how I do it BZB.
-
BZB. Do I have to do it from my Mac then send it to my iPad. My Tapatalk never has asked me for the size. I am confused.. Gert
-
What colours have you all chosen? I can't decide between the black and the pink.
-
BZB. Do I have to do it from my Mac then send it to my iPad. My Tapatalk never has asked me for the size. I am confused.. Gert
Gert, I bought tapatalk this week (to post pics on my latest addiction - Forum Thermomix!)
The options just popped up when I posted pics from it. Perhaps it's the part of the latest version?
I'll check the version number when I get home.
I posted photos that I took using the iPad.
-
Pink! It's quirky enough to need to be in colour.
-
The frosty is a good colour for Stainless steel kitchen and DH liked it so he got that one.. . The pink is cheeky. I gave that one to my daughter but like it so much I have bought another for the mini. I like the black in my black and white kitchen. The green is Thermomix green. Don't like blue but it would suit some. Bought the frosty for a friend.

I had to buy another paid version for my iPhone and was able to go in and crop the pics so they are a bit smaller .
Thanks for your help. Maybe we had better continue anything further on the iPad thread or someone will slap us on the wrist.
Gert

When I use tapatalk mine comes up to ask what size I want the picture to be too.

You are too clever Judy. Thank you.

What version is that cookie. Maybe I should delete my Tapatalk and re download.
Gert

I do like the look of that stand, but the cover I have at the moment doubles as a stand as well, and I can't justify buying another one just yet. I do like the look of the green one though. :)
I have the ordinary version of tapatalk, not the HD one, and it gives me 3 options for photo sizes.
-
Yes I think mine is the ordinary version too. It gives me a choice of 3 sizes.

I have two versions. My original. HD and New 2.06 . Neither allows sizing but the new allows cropping and editing photos. When I have time I will sort it our.
Thanks for all your help,girls.

Maybe I will download the free version again ES.
I have several covers, stands and what nots but none are as good as the Kribbitt. I regret the money I have spent in pursuit of the ultimate believe me. I will donate the lot to some neighbourhood kids .
Gert

Very interesting. I just downloaded the free Tapatalk then paid $1.99 for the photo add on and NOW I see the three sizes. So I now have 3 versions of Tapatalk.
Thank you girls very much.
Gert
-
Now I will try a photo.
Medium size
Gift for DH 84th birthday.
Gert
-
Yeah Gert. Good present too.
-
Excellent-I like the pressie!
I can see the whole photo without having to scroll across, or go into Tapatalk to see it like I usually do when you post photos.
I now remember that my version. Of Tapatalk was free to start with, but I had to pay $1.99 to be able to post more than a minimum number of photos.
-
Suckedinthiugh as I had already downloaded the $4.99 version. Ss why are there 3 Tapatalk apps plus add ons? Most confusing for ppl.
Gert
-
Will have to download again too Gert, the version I have does not give the choice of sizing either. I paid for the HD version thinking it would be better. Thanks for the help, it has been bugging me that the photos were so large.
Marie
-
Really annoying isn't it Marie? Get the free one the add the $1.99. No it ain't much but it is deceitful.
Gert
-
Very strange. I just downloaded the free version initially and then upgraded when I wasn't able to uplad any more photos. I've always had the size options. Seems to work differently for different people.
-
I just went into the App Store to download the free tapatalk and it does not show. There is tapatalk forum 2.99 HD version which I have and tapatalk 2 for 4.49. I must be going crazy! Think I'll go get another cup of coffee and come back later.
By the way Gert, love that Kribbitt stand

That is why it is so hard to help people with Tapatalk as each is different. Try using the HD and see if there is an add on for photos . That might work or like you say just come back later and no doubt it will pop up. Curious isn't it?
I am so in love with my Kribbits. Helene has put a couple of VDO'S on You Tube She is so cute. Here she tells you how to set it up

Thanks Gert, still cannot find a photo add on. Which one did you get? or did the one you get come with the free tapa talk app.
Marie
-
My tapatalk is the free one and like Wonder I paid $1.99 to be able to add extra photos. It has the sizing. I was going to upgrade some time ago but as I could use this I decided to leave it. Now I am glad I did. ;D
-
Okay, will try and load a photo now(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/31/a3agevup.jpg)

Stnd by Emme I will go to Tapatalk and post. Screen shot.
Gert

You get 31 photo uploads for free and after that you pay $1.99..
Good choice of photo. I am in love.
Gert
-
As there was no option to buy the free app. I paid for the forum version and then the 1.99 add on. The photo above was the medium one so now at least I am given the option. Don't know why I bought the HD version.
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/31/rusypude.jpg). Here is a screen shot of the app extra page.
This is what it looks like. (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/31/y6u4ybup.jpg)

Thanks for your trouble Gert. That was the one I purchased just now with the extra photo sharing. Now can I ask a really dumb question about this version of tapa talk. How do I log off the forum?
I thought I had logged off. But I looked on the forum on computer and according to that I am still logged on. Showing I am a guest on the computer but at the bottom I am still showing as being logged on. I think I need a drink!
-
I just go back to Home page or Me and shut it down on my iPad I think you can go to settings and set it to log off when you exit but I Am happy not to have to log in each time.
BTW no trouble at all. I am happy toget it sorted finally so we all know what we are talking about!?
Gert
-
Thanks again Gert. Will have another go. Yes, it is great to finally get something sorted out re photos. I think I may delete the HD version, and just stay with this one. I feel I have at least achieved something today.
-
Just synced my iPad to my MacBook. When I synced my iPhone to the MacBook, tapatalk appeared on my phone. Now I have the forum EVERYWHERE I go :D
Mine was the $2.99 forum tapatalk.

Are you deleting all the useless stuff? Keeping your files tidy? Managing your bookmarks? Keeping those home screens in order?
You make me laugh.

Gert
Gert, I read the ipad book you suggested we buy, and have now tidied up the homescreen and put some of the apps in folders. I really surprise myself at times. Just have to re-read the book to find out now about bookmarks ??? ??? and I will be uptodate. ;D
Marie
-
If I told ya then it would take the fun away! Look to the top of this page . To the left of the address is an arrow in a box. Tap that and you will get a hint. Once you have bookmarked some favourites then you can go to the icon to the left of the cloud which is to the left of the icon you just tapped. You can see it looks like an open book. Tap that and you will see all your bookmarks. You can then organise them into folders or files . For instance. If you make a folder named recipes every time you see a recipe you can bookmark that page and put it into your folder marked recipes. That saves you searching and searching for a page or website or this forum to find that particular page. Just open bookmarks and tap the page you saved.
Screen shots are another way to keep recipes you see in an album in Photos but that is another wee lesson.
Gert
-
Morning Gert, that was a great lesson, I too bought the book but never seem to spend the time to read it, the lesson from you was much easier ....Thanks

Funny you should talk about screen shots Gert. Have had my iPad for 4 days (yes still excited) and have just learnt how to do it. Thanks to a young primary school boy! Here is my first screenshot. I think you might recognise the lovely face. Can I let the secret out Gert on how to, or would you like the honours ;)(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/04/ju9uda3e.jpg)

Gert I have a leather cover on my iPad will the Kribbitt still fit on please? I am home now and ready to order. ;D
Yup. DH has a leather cover which is quite thick and it is fine. Also fits without a cover. You can bend it and stretch it and play with it so it fits just about every device. And it is still solid. Amazing invention.
Gert
-
Thank you. One Kribbitt to be ordered.
-
What colour, Cookie?? ;D
-
A quote from Gert elsewhere which may be useful to iPad users.
Did you know that when taking a picture with the iPad that you can hold your thumb or finger on the button while focusing as it does not take a snap until you release the button. Might help.
Gert
and one from Cookie too
When you have one screen open on safari, tap the plus sign near the top right. This will give you the opportunity to type in whatever you want for your second screen. Eg glitter graphics. You will then see that you have two things open and you can tap on them to use which ever you want.
I should have perhaps made this clear that it is only when using safari. (As far as I know)
-
I've tried tapping that + sign and nothing happens .. Any suggestion as go what I'm doing wrong or not doing.... Having. Go At
DDs ipad
-
GF when you tap the plus sign all that happens is that the words Forum Thermomix etc seem to slide to the left. Then you can type in a new address up in the white boxes where you type Internet addresses. I will do a screen shot of what it looks like after you tap the plus.
Then you type in the new address and hey presto you have two windows open and you just tap each one to move between them.
( I'm still in my py's, it is 8.30 and everyone has gone out for the day, I'd better go and get dressed!)
-
An added note GF. My Kribbitt is black. It is 22 days since I ordered it I am hanging out for the parcel delivery man. Hopefully today.
-
Hi Cookie... The + sign seems to be dimmer which suggests to me that its inactive??? Is there anything I should be doing to wake it up ??
-
When all else fails GF close all windows and doors and reboot.
Re boot by holding the home button and the on off button at the same time for a few seconds. Wait a minute then do the same again. You will see an apple thinking. When it is finished you will get the slide to open invite.
I also use the atomic web app for searching when Safari is mucking up.
Gert
-
Thanks Gert ... Giving it a go now
-
Bingo! Have it all sorted!! Thanks Gert.. And thank you, too, Cookie.. Really appreciate the advice... A bit slow on the learning curve I'm afraid :(
-
I'm glad it worked. I didn't know about rebooting it or even how to do it. Did you have all the doors and windows closed? :D :D :D :D :D
-
Doors, windows you name it, cookie!! ;D ;D ;D
-
I found when my + button didn't work it was because I had to much open and I had to close some. I got that tip from iPad tips and tricks that Gert recommended, tip 71 I think 😃😃
-
Well now I can tell you a story about my mini IPad. When I was "filming" Mama Fergies adventures up here in Tropical North Queensland I dropped my mini iPad on the concrete flood face down. It chipped and cracked the glass but the iPad still worked fine. I finally got around to taking it to an alleged Apple reseller/repair shop nearby called Talk to the Mac. I have had dealing with this mob on more than a few occasions. on each and every occasion I have been sorely disappointed with their lack of knowledge of their product and their lack of interest in their customers. On this occasion I was not surprised to learn that they actually do not do any repairs and apparently have no idea where repairs can be found in all of Cairns. maybe Brisbane???
I sort of knew that so went in just to wind them up. I walked a bit further to the lovely, helpful people who own Applescreens who actually do repairs but are not an official Apple shop.. They offered to replace the screen for $200 with 3 month warranty .The lovely staff took my mini and immediately put a protective screen on it no charge. "Just so it won't get any dirt in it while you decide'. How nice. She also advised me to take it into Cairns Central to Next Byte and use their iConcierge service. So off I went last Tursday where my mini was assessed, and popped into abag . I signed an agreement to whatever and today I received a call to get my NEW mini. 4 days. Wow. $306 for a new mini.
I advise anyone doing the same to back up their device. write down all their email passwords and any other important stuff. It is now tethered to my Mac for re downloading all my apps. The restore took less than 2 minutes but the apps will take several hours. 3 month warranty or whatever is left of your original warranty. Which ever is the longer which in my case is under warranty until November. I did have my original mini engraved with my email address but I would have had to wait for two weeks for that one so was happy

To save your battery. Be sure to double tap the home button. A new window will open at the bottom. Tap and hold one icon. When it comes up with a . Delete button tap each button off.
Gert
-
Gretchen, I have had to do the same with two iPads after accident with DS.the apple store told me they "replace" them with a new one for half the cost of a new one. Thankfully te two we have broken were the lowest models so cheaper to replace.
-
One benefit of having a cheaper version. I have no intention of dropping this one again. I missed it more than my bigger ones because it is the one with a SIM card. I now have to put that back in but need daylight to see the damn thing.
You may have to re think about letting DS use the IPad. LOL!

I was shown this for the iphone, too, a couple of months ago when my phone had a bit of a hissy fit and I took it into Telstra to find out what the heck was going on. . . . nobody told me about it before!! Home page, tap the button twice, hold down any of the apps that appear and then continue pressing the little "minus" sign in the left hand corner. The fellow in the store spent about 5 minutes deleting all mine!! ;D ;D ;D
-
I guess it is just housekeeping but it is surprising how many people don't do it. I always do it but found out a friend had no idea today so thought I would mention it.
Gert
-
Glad you are happy with your 'as new' iPad Gretchen. My SIL has one down there with a broken screen too - I thought one of the GKs must have dropped it but no, it was SIL himself.
-

Gert
I would have thought it would have been just one of the basic tips the rep would instruct you on as you signed on the dotted line. My DS had no idea either but now deletes them religiously
-
Common problem I guess. I did buy a new more protective cover for it . I usually have it attached ro my Kribbitt but not when it is in my handbag..
Gert
-
He's actually managed to break 3 screens! The first was the day I handed my old one over to him and he was so excited he took it to a mates place and their dog liked the look of it and pulled it off the bench ad he was devastated, the 2nd his mate was playing with it and dropped it, the third time I have no idea how it happened and it won't get replaced unless he can pay for it. The first 2 we felt a little sorry for him but by the third he should ave known better.
-
If you can afford to give such an expensive thing to your kids to "play" with then fine . But if you can't then they should not have one until they can afford to buy their own and realise how many hours you have to work to to pay for it. Maybe they would then have some respect for it and treat it with care. I cringe when I see toddlers in strollers playing with IPads or kids with IPhones like I saw at Yorkeys Knob Yacht Cub restaurant. One kid took the iPhone into to kiddie play area and shared it around. She was even in the slippery dip with it. Yikes!
I really don't consider these devices as toys but that is me. If a kid needs a computer, which I think they do, then an iPad will be useful for those old enough to get the concept . I think they probably need both these days. A phone not so much. I think it is great that schools are embracing the technology but we all have to pay for it.
Gert
-
I've dropped my iPhone a few times over the years and despite a few dinks in the casing I've never actually broken the screen. I kind of pit that down to luck and the screen protectors.
I once ended up with a cm wide gouge in my first iPhones screen a mere few weeks after getting it (back when they first came out) as my son (then just a toddler) basked into my and knocked it out of my hand. I was kneeling so it fell only a short distance, unfortunately it landed onto the carpet divider in the doorway.
I've dropped an ipad once, the originally ipad a couple of days before we were due to sell it. I somehow picked it up badly and it bounced off the work surface in the kitchen and went from one end to the other. Amazingly it didn't break the screen or stop it working though it did end up with a dent in the back. (It was out of its case because a different iPad was in it) again I had a screen protector on.
I'm hyper paranoid about screens and always use a screen protector to prevent accidental scratches (even if the glass is supposed to be highly resistant to them). That said you have to be going some to break a screen in normal usage.
-
That is true Tarasis . In my case when I dropped the mini it went face down and I think not even a screen protector would have helped. I dropped my iPhone from a height of 1.2 metres, it fell on it's face but the case protected it. With my mini I opened it and held it by the silly magnetic cover by mistake of course. It was not a strong enough magnetic to hold. I did buy another case which is not as slim and adds bulk but is more protective. I am not a fan of screen protectors and both my older bigger iPads have suffered no scratches so far. Probably good luck. Not they are pretty well protected living in their Kribbitts. Have you bought on yet?
I missed my mini so much and it was gone for only 3 days. Don't think I ever missed my kids that much. LOL!
Gert
-
Great to hear you have your new mini Gert. That was quick.
I love mine already and absolutely no kids apps going on this one.
-
Good move MF.
Gert
-
Maybe Candy Crush MF?
-
That's not a kids app cookie. It's for grown ups ...... Isn't it ;) ;D
-
It has to be Kimmy. I can't do it, maybe I need someone under 5!
-
Lol must admit DS6 & DS4 do help me a lot :D
-
A new tip Cookie's DH might like.
Go to settings....general....scroll down to INVERT COLOURS tap it on.
Just for fun.
Gert
-
Here's a couple of things you can also do on your iPhone as well:
If you are typing and make a mistake, shake iPad and a speech bubble will come up asking if you want to undo typing. To reinstate back, repeat .
To create a shortcut for phrases and address you frequently use, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > keyboard shortcuts > create new shortcut.
Phrase (eg. Thermomix)
Shortcut (You may choose : tm)
every time you type the shortcut it will come up with the phrase automatically and you press the space bar to accept. Use it to shortcut your address. You will probably find an example already there such as "You there?"
-
There is a new update for iPad Tips and Tricks Pro app available .

For cookie.
If you want to cut and paste on iPad tap the link or whatever until it turns blue then stretch or shrink that bit you want to use.
Then tap and hold in the middle .....up comes select all .... Tap that then cut or copy turns up choose copy.
Open where you want to paste it in a reply or email or whatever then tap the space and hold.....it will say paste.....tap paste.
Or just google it and find the apple answer.

Thanks Gert. That was very helpful - I didn't know to do this but it's really simple ...when you know how! ;D

Thanks Gert. I will practise it. I thought of you a lot on Boxing Day I tidied up my iPad screens and put everything into folders. It is much nicer and just as easy to use.

Why has the top of safari and all the tabs gone black?
I tried to open drop box in an email to get photos of this house from the agents and after that everything went black. I also have to keep signing into forum when I never do that. I keep being a guest. Weird. Hoping now ticked box again to stay signed in all will be well.
Thanks in advance for unscrambling this mystery.

I've been meaning to post this for a while. If you want to take a selfie pic plug in your iPhone earplugs to your iPhone or iPad and press + when you're ready ;D ;D ;D

Done all that. No change.
Forum won't keep me signed in either??????
Edited... Googled it and found it was private setting that did it... Have turned it off.
