I am thinking of getting one of these Map Presto coffee machines for DH for fathers day, but as I know nothing about coffee as I dont drink it, I was wondering what others thought of it? and are these kind of capsule coffee makers any good?
thanks in advance :)

I'm trying to get my hands on an Aldi coffee machine but they are out of stock until about the 2 September. I'm not a coffee drinker, but a lot of people here reckon they are good. They are about the same price too.
-
We don't have an Aldi here, but seen these advertised and thought it would make a great present for DH, I'm sure others would enjoy it too :)
-
I have a Nespresso which is also a pod system and love it. I think the biggest thing when considering these machines is the availability of the pods - we have 2 Nespresso stores in a 5km distance so no hassle for us but I know it is a problem for some.
MIL has the Aldi machine and it works great for her - they also have hot Choc pods!
-
Ye I think Hot chocolate would be the way to go for me, but would have to limit how much I had lol.
I looked on the web site for the Map presto machine and can buy pods directly from them, so that's handy to know. Also office works stocks the pods and Harvey Norman so should be ok. I think I would stock up on a few different types if I buy one.
-
I think even Myer also stock the Nespresso pods?
-
I have a nespresso and really love it and friends love the coffee from it too. You can buy the pods online or at a Nespresso boutique. Perth has one of these now so Myer no longer sells the pods. I usually buy 200 or 300 so don't need to go in to the city very often. We also recycle the pods as they are made of aluminium. I just take them back to the Nespresso place.
-
Can I ask what is nespresso?
-
We love our Aldi machine (I especially like the Chai but haven't seen it in store for ages).
As with all pod coffee machines, they are not as good as a freshly brewed coffee made by someone who knows what they are doing (!), but for my money pods are a great option to have at home...I can make a decent coffee in less time than it takes to boil the kettle! I think the Aldi pods work out to be about 37c per coffee, I think the Nespresso are a little more but I'm not sure.
-
The pods for the Map machine are $6.50 for 10. So that's 65 cents each. Is that too expensive ?
-
Dede Nespresso is a brand like Map. Some of machines and pods are interchangeable. All of the pods are about the same price. It is an expensive way to buy coffee.
I am a bit of a coffee snob. I would rather not have coffee than drink instant. I have a Nespresso machine at my DD's house for when I visit because I didn't drink enough coffee there to keep it fresh. Coffee oxidizes very quickly once it is ground.
The pod machines make a good consistent coffee. However I have a Sunbeam Cafe series machine and grinder. I buy beans from specialist online coffee suppliers and only grind enough for one cup at a time.
-
Thanks Dash for explaining that, I thought it was some other way of making coffee. It's a shame I don't like coffee with all these machines about.
-
I wish I was a coffee snob. I am a tea drinker and nothing makes me more angry than going to a cafe and having to make my own cup with a small jug of boiling water, a tea bag and a small jug of milk. Why go out when I can have the same at home??? Grrrr! Give me a loose leaf jug (I've at least got one of those at home, but its so easy to give to customers and probably a lot more cheaper than bags).
If I could order a cup of tea from a cafe: they SHOULD bring it to me made up in a FINE TEA CUP (black with a small jug of milk on the side). I like one cup, but it needs to be from a fine porcelain cup and a cup that doesn't lose heat easily. Otherwise its just ordinary.
-
That seems reasonable CP. I like tea too. If I was buying tea at a cafe I would expect it to be leaf tea not a tea bag.
-
DH dragged me out today, and although I got a looseleaf jug I had a bloomin fat tea cup that is sponsored by a coffee company! You drink from about a 5mm girth cup - no thank you, coffee drinkers do but not tea drinkers -- they need to get it right.
-
I meet up with a friend for a drink in town and paid for a cup of boiling water with a little jug of milk, I had to stand at a counter and pick from a few different tea bags, open it myself and make my own cup of tea in a massive cup. So what did I pay for?
-

I agree. I do not own tea bags nor instant coffee. Yuk yuk yuk . To have freshly ground coffee for every cup is wonderful. The listening to it grind, the smell of it heightens the senses and the anticipation adds to the enjoyment of a good cup of coffee.
I was lucky when I bought my house that it has a automatic boiling water system at the sink which is just the right temp for a lovely cup,of fresh brewed tea. And DH bought the best domestic coffee machine on the market a Swiss made Jura. All stainless steel inside and it produces the hottest bestest coffee .
We are not coffee snobs Dashingden but connoisseurs of fine coffee and that does not make us bad people.
I think I will,have a cuppa right now.
Gert

instant coffee yum yum yum ;D
-
And you an Italian! shame shame shame ;D ;D ;D
Gert
-
Well thank god this forum's members doesn't lynch you for using pods or instant, and liking it! .....I tell you....some people are so fanatical about it, it ends up in heated debates :-))
Anyway dede....check out the product reviews here http://www.productreview.com.au/p/map-bella.html
I have heard before that people (including some of those coffee snobs) didn't mind the coffee....well those who weren't too afraid to admit it :P
If you have access to the coffee easily, then it sounds like a good way to go.
The nespresso pods are more expensive, and you will have postage costs on top of that.
I've had 2 manual machines previously. A delonghi and sunbeam. Honestly, I preffered the convenience and clean up of the pod machines, and once I found the strength coffee I liked....I haven't looked back.
I would suggest if you do buy one, try the top strength & a mid strength capsule first....or they may sell a sampler pack so your Hubby could find what he likes best.
I think it's a good Fathers Day present ;) Men really do love gadgets!
-
i have a small coffee machine at work, but we don't use it, as it is a pain to clean..
:)
instant.. I do have coffeeworks coffee...
-
Maddy while I do like my freshly ground coffee at home and I agree with Gert about the ritual an sensual stimulation of making coffee from scratch. I do use a pod machine at work and also at DD's house.
When I visited my brother and SIL in the US last year they had a pod machine called a Krups. It used big pods and filter style coffee like the Americans drink and well as having tee and hot chocolate pods. You could get different flavor teas and coffee blends that matched what the chain stores used. For example you could buy pods that were 7eleven blend or Dunkin Doughnuts.
Again it is an expensive way to buy coffee but is is convenient if you only have one cup a day. or drink coffee infrequently.
-
Obbie Coffeeworks do pods.
There are some pods which are refillable but why bother.
A lot of good coffee grinding places are making pods theses days and lots available in bulk on line making it cheaper. I find with those machines the water is not heated hot enough for me but I would have one if I ever needed one.
Den one of my first coffee makers was a Krups I bought in Sydney 40 years ago and was a great coffee maker.it wasn't a pod machine but a filter one. i finally wore it out and went over to a proper coffee machine.
I think Americans are finally coming around to drinking good coffee but they do like it weak with half and half and sugar. OMG YUK!
As for uni and her International Roast I will say no more. :-)) To each his own.
Gert
-
I don't mind my Moccona instant, but I do love my Nespresso machine. I only have one of those a day. DH doesn't like it at all. Today we had visitors for lunch and I gave them Nespresso but heated the milk in the TMX. One said it was the best coffee he had had for ages. He remarked that the milk was just right. I heated it to 80 and frothed it at the end.
-
First coffee machine a DeLonghi which lasted until end of warranty then was repaired many times. IN the end I said no more as I had spent over $700 on repairs for it..
I then got a Saeco ( bought online at auction, they said batch had damadged box
-
Don't you hate it when you hit send too soon!,
Saeco machine works well. I have tried the pod machines they are in quite a lot of hotels these days, but personally we drink too much coffee between us to make them economics. I buy my beans wholesale a couple of kilos at a time.
-
I think the pods are fine if you are not drinking a lot but they can be expensive. At least the coffee is ground coffee, maybe not arabica but fresh when sealed . Some of the nespresso machines come with frothers and most give you a false creama on top which looks good if not authentic.
Gert
-
I had a Sunbeam Cafe series machine before and that gave a pretty good crema. The main reason I got rid of it ( actually it is under a shelf on the floor of the pantry) is as I'm usually the only one having coffee it took a while to make it. Now I can make my coffee at about the same speed as DH's instant one.
-
Harvey Norman has sol out of the Map coffee machines :(
Might have to wait or re think the fathers day present. Bugger.
-
We also love our coffee. I can tell the time by my need to have a coffee at 11.00am. Over the years we have had several machines. The one at the moment is a Saeco. DH doesn't cook but does make a mean coffee. We buy the very best coffee we can get our hands on. Usually between $50/60 a K. I have done the sums and it costs about 50c a cup. That is about the cost of the pods. The used grounds go on the lemon tree. The Saeco grinds the beans for each cup, so it is important to make sure that you get the coffee that you like. We often drive home from shopping to have our own coffee as it is better than what the local shops make.
Like CP we also like our tea. I like weak black and object to paying $3+ for the awful stuff from the cafes. I also like my tea in a TEA cup.
-
I am lucky here to have so many coffee plantations to choose from. The beans are always Fresh roasted and chookie they have a reward thingy so I get a freebie now and again. I figure it also is about 50 cents a cup. I rarely have coffee out anymore. I like my coffee in a china cup as well as my tea. I cannot bring myself to pay $3.50 to $4.00 for a cuppa.
Gert
-
I cannot bring myself to pay $3.50 to $4.00 for a cuppa.
Wait until you see WA coffee prices Gert. $3.50 -$4 is a good deal.
I buy my coffee from one of two places. Yahava in Margaret River (they ship it) and 5 Senses which roast in Perth and on the east coast somewhere. If I order from 5 senses online on Monday it is sitting on my door by Friday having been roasted on the Tuesday.
At the moment I have a single origin Cuban coffee from Yahava. It is very smooth with hints of chocolates.
-
Like the sound of that.
Gert
-
I'll try and get some from their Swan Valley site before I head down. I am in Perth all week for work and do not want grind what I have at home that early. I will try to remember to pack my stove top esspresso pot.
-
Gert We have had a Jura coffee machine for 2 1/2 years and absolutely looooooveeee it. We buy coffee in 10 x 1kg bags from a coffee place in Woollongong and that only lasts us 3 months at best ! Both DH and I love our coffee !!
I wish I was a coffee snob. I am a tea drinker and nothing makes me more angry than going to a cafe and having to make my own cup with a small jug of boiling water, a tea bag and a small jug of milk. Interesting how we all feel about our coffee and tea.
dash I am bringing a small plunger and some ground coffee from the Tablelands.
Any luck some of the houses may have a plunger or an espresso machine.
Gert
-
I wish i liked coffee :( or maybe I just don't like cheap instant coffee.
My DF never drank coffee until he was sick and had to have a pace maker, now he drinks coffee all the time :o, I find it strange to make him coffee now
-
Gert I THINK when I was looking at the pictures on the net of our house I saw a coffee machine on the bench top.
-
Gert I THINK when I was looking at the pictures on the net of our house I saw a coffee machine on the bench top.
Good o I will still bring my little plunger anyway as it fits,in the bag. In fact everything just fits in the bag.
Anything small I can bring cookie 1
Gert
-
Coffee experts out there in forum land, I have bought lavazza coffee for our dinner guests tomorrow night. Since none of us drink plunger coffee, can I freeze the coffee for another lot of guests?
-
Certainly you can freeze the coffee.
-
You sure can court. Coffee freezes well in an air tight container.
-
I'm getting a nespresso capsule machine - ordered it on the weekend. My sunbeam cafe machine is on its last legs, it was great value, lasted about 10 years. I only have 1 or 2 coffees a day and I just can't be bothered with the cleaning anymore. I know it will cost me more because I can get fresh roasted coffee free whenever I want - I have good friends who own a coffee roasting business. I was a bit scared to tell them about my new purchase, but they were actually pretty complimentary about it!
-
Thanks Gert and Snappy!
-
I'd greatly appreciate any advice on coffee machines...here's my situation:
I have an Aldi pod machine which is a good alternative (imo) to instant for when at home.
Coffees at cafes average at $4.50 here...I'm over paying for coffee at these prices when I am often disappointed.
So in doing the sums, DH & I are better off buying a fully automated machine with beans I like.
I found a Jura C9 for $1400 on sale at the moment and there is a Saeco that looks alright for about half that. Any ideas? Comments? Suggestions? I've looked on the review sites, however I really value the reviews of fellow forum members :)
Ultimately I'd love this one...

but not at $6,000!
-
Dede, we ended up buying JURA MICRO ENA 1 for around $840 ( I think) from DJ. Love it. One touch button and the taste of coffee is far better than pods ( in our opinion). We went shopping wanting to buy Nespresso and came back with JURA. You will not regret a JURA purchase.
-
I have a Jura and love it although I did have to have it repaired the other day I think we've had it for 3 years and haven't had any issues.
From memory it was about $3000 but like you at $4.50 a pop works out much cheaper in the long run apparently we have made 4500 coffees :-[
-
Thanks Courton... How do you go with the temperature and milk?
-
Suzanne, do you know which Jura? The reviews I've read question the temperature... Is it hot?
-
we have the impressa S9 it has a separate milk unit that you keep in the fridge then attach with the little hose at the side
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/28/hugyvydy.jpg)
I drink lattes so it's a perfect temp for me dh has cappuccino/espresso and he has never said it's not hot enough.
When we were buying ours we went and sampled a lot of different types and this is the one dh came home with.
I would not recommend a delonghi had one once never again
-
(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/28/ra5agysy.jpg)
I have a Jura Impressa J 9.3 one touch and it is wonderful. You can adjust the temp which is especially good for those who like hot hot coffee . Also great for latte and cappuccino. This machine will last a lifetime and is Swiss made. I also like that I can change the picture on the LED display. Currently it is coffee beans. It is self cleaning.
I think Dashing Den has the same machine.
I can't remember what it cost but it was exxy. Maybe about 2500. It was also replacing top of the range Delonghi. I know that some Nespresso machines are made by Delonghi.
Gert
-
Suzanne & Gert, thank you so much for posting pictures (I'm a visual person!!!).
I appreciate your reviews...might go for a look at a few places this weekend :)
-
Jamberie the Saeco is ok. My wonderful ex son in law has one but it is all plastic and the coffee is not hot.
I would go to Harvey Norman. They have a big range and you get free coffee and demos.
Gert
-
and you get free coffee.
Gert
I'm there.
-
I think Gert has answered most of the questions. We got the milk frother as part of the deal. Recommend you do a bit of price comparison before you head to the shops since the price seems to vary quite a bit.
-

That is so true. Mine came with the milk frother but if it does not and you decide to buy then get all the extras you can including cleaning stuff. I did not need the water filter it came with.
Gert
-
yes we got the milk frother, a cleaning kit with the tablets and spare milk hose, two filters, a set of latte glasses and some coffee beans.
-
This thread is interesting as I am researching coffee making for my B and B for next year.
This method gets good reviews but not sure it'll work in a B and B as it will get too cool on decanting into mugs.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Aerobie-AeroPress-80R08-Coffee-Maker/dp/B000GXZ2GS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1349822747&sr=8-1
I am not a coffee drinker so can't actually give an opinion on the finished coffee.
I had wanted a pod system but am concerned about cost and environmental aspects.
Will keep looking and reading and asking.
-
Did i see you can get chai capsules for the aldi machine..now thats a selling feature for me

This one looks quite good?

Oh no DJ I cannot imagine anything worse that coffee which has been sitting there for 12 hours or even an hour. YUK!
Some machines like the Jura are recommended for small motels and B & B as there is a small refrigerated thing to put the milk container in. It is fully automatic push the button self cleaning and even my DH can use it. I first saw one in a hotel in Thailand and have seen it since in other hotels in the board room come meeting rooms or breakfast buffets.
I reckon the next best thing and cheap as are the plungers and people can choose their type of coffee, tea or chai. I always appreciate these in hotels and B & B s
Gert
-
Ok gert
Well in the rooms it would have to be instant but could do ground coffee with plungers for breakfast, dinner or afternoon tea.
Just need to learn exactly how much coffee per plunger for the best cup possible. Am expert on tea but not coffee, not yet LOL!

You can buy a coffee scoop which holds about 7 gms I think. One scoop per cup is perfect. Let it stew for 90 secs and plunge.
Couldn't you use them in the rooms as well? Will each room have a kettle? Lots of hotels and motels use them . But I guess they would steal the ground coffee. Yup give 'em instant or coffee bags but then they could steal those too. Put the price up to cover all those thieving visitors . LOL! Nah give them the good stuff. Just put the price of the plunger, cups, towels etc on the list and charge them if they steal them.

Did i see you can get chia capsules for the aldi machine..now thats a selling feature for me
You can get the Chai capsules to fit the MAP coffee machines (ALDI, Woolies Machines etc) :) some of the girls have them at work, the caramel coffee ones (for Gloria Jeans) are my weakness and the pod machine is a good step up from instant when you are spoilt with a good machine at home! :o
-
I have a Saeco machine. Didn't think I needed one as I didn't use the labour intensive sunbeam machine I had. Well we visited friends who had a delonghi and DH was convinced that although he doesn't drink coffee he thought I would make use of it. I was still unconvinced.
Then we came home, our set top box on the tv had died and I went to Harvey Norman with him to make sure the new set top box wasn't stuck inside a new tv.
At home I made a coffee using plunger grinds by accident. Was so unhappy with the result that I accepted a free coffee from the demo machine while at Harvey Norman and came home with my Saeco at half price.
It's had a warrantee repair and is going strong again but with my busy boys I tend to microwave my milk in the morning (lazy). I haven't used my tmx for milk yet. I'm also drinking green smoothies so drinking less coffee. DH thinks that the coffee machine should go to make room for the tmx...
-
A perfect example of how one thing leads to another!
Gert
-
We have a Saeco machine. This is my DH's toy. I love my morning coffee. Over the years we have had many different machines and processes for making coffee. We think this is the best so far.

I used a Saeco in a B & B in Eden many years ago and the owner said it was 5 years old then so they do last. A non commercial coffee machine lasting that long in a B & B it must be good .
Gert
-
Ok so I've heated my milk in the tmx now! I was making porridge so I didn't need to clean between. Winning.

Thanks everyone for your help, after your recommendations I was able to work out the functions that are useful to our needs /wants.
Went to Myer, Good Guys, Bing Lee & finally took the trip across town to Harvey Norman where the sales assistant turned on any machine we wanted and nothing was too much trouble.
We ended up with a Saeco Xelsis which was on sale for a great price, and made great coffee at the touch of a button :) happy day!
Thanks again for all the help everyone :)
-
Crickey it ought to last Gert £1500

Still thinking coffee plungers at this end of the world.
-
It was half price in the end of financial year sales...
Here's a picture...they were so popular today they didn't have enough in stock so I'll pick it up next week.
-
Good choice Jamberie.
DJ for your needs the plunger is very good choice. Easy to replace . Not too expensive and everyone knows how to use them. They can be used for coffee and tea and from one cup size to more than a litre. You could buy a dozen for the cost of a cheap coffee machine. The glass is replaceable as well. You can buy ground beans and loose tea. All good.
Gert
-
I think people have forgotten about loose tea over here!
-
Looks great Jamberie. I wish DH drank hot drinks at home. It's quite social having a cuppa tea and we miss out on that.
-
I think people have forgotten about loose tea over here!
We should start a movement back to loose leaf - there's really no comparison!!
-
You bet. I am about to brew a pot of Russian Caravan.
Gert
-
Good choice of coffee machine, and good price. Yes love tea leaves. Gunpowder, Russian Caravan and some of the special English blends are very nice. . Bought some Japanese tea leaves in Japan, but they taste like green grass cuttings to us. We have plungers of all sizes. Very handy, although I tend to make the mix too strong.
-
All we use at home is loose tea. We have a collection of different teas, oolong, Japanese sencha, masala chia, puerh tea & jasmine tea. DW insists on buying the correct tea pot to go with each type of tea so we have a small collection of tea pots too.
We only use tea bags at work or to make iced tea.
My coffee machine needs to be serviced. I've been putting it off for as long as I can because I know I'll be with out it for at least 2 weeks.
-
After years of drinking just Moccona after our coffee machine died I'm thinking of purchasing a new one. We both drink flat white with DH and friends preferring capuccino and the kids liking there hot chocolate. As we aren't coffee connoisseurs but the one reason we haven't purchased a new machine is that I like my coffee very hot and found that many machines make what I regard as only a luke warm coffee.
After reading a lot of reviews including those on here I'm thinking we will purchase a Jura but would like opinions on these two models. I'm swaying to the cheaper one with the seperate milk frother only because I'm thinking the milk might get hotter.

-
We were exactly in the same boat as you. After having an extremely expensive coffee machine work only sometimes, we drank instant for years. We bought the Jura Micro 1 at Christmas time and love using it. Our teenager makes hot choc every night. It comes with a separate milk frother. We got that as part of the purchase price from DJ and paid around the same price.
-
thanks courton, we actually took our Kleenmaid in to be serviced and the original quote was over $1,000 and we never bothered ringing the repairers back we were so annoyed. i'm sure he ended up fixing it for half the price and reselling to someone else. I'm pretty wary this time around.
When I first looked at appliances online they included the frother for that price but now it doesn't seem to be showing up.
Are you able to just get hot water from the machine to make the hot chocolate and then use the milk frother? Also do you find the coffee is as hot as from a kettle?
-
Hi, it does not heat water alone. In terms of the hotness of the coffee I have a weak coffee with lots of soy...so I am not the best judge. Highly recommend you call Jura to find out where their demonstration is being held and check it out for yourself before you make the final decision. They are lovely and friendly team and very helpful. But we definitely got the milk frother as part of the deal
PS Costco was stocking Jura ...may be worth finding out their price.
-
Mine heats the water and the milk .
Harvey Norman will give you a demo.
Gert
-
Had a quick look at these at harvey norman today and as usual I'm getting swayed to spending much more money than I originally thought. DJ's sale end on Sunday but Jura said that harvey norman are about to start a sale and have a demonstrator at our local harvey norman tomorrow so I'll go and have a look and ask a few more questions. The customer service person was great and went over the models with me on the phone and gave me her recommendation which surprisingly was the middle model. Gert from looking at your posting in this thread, the model you have is what the girl at Harvey norman was trying to sell me today. She made me a latte and it was way to strong for me but was nice and hot.
-
Good luck with it Wonder. I got rid of our Delonghi because the coffee wasn't hot enough.
-
That's one of the reasons I never really liked our last one but I was impressed with the sample I had at lunchtime. I think I will probably be posting in the shopping thread soon.

Wonder you can adjust he strength and the amount of milk any time permanently and also as you brew a cup for those who want it stronger or weaker. Set your favourites then add and subtract for guests.
There is a model exactly like mine without the digital display which is cheaper still. I just had to have the display so Imcoild change the pics but it is EXACTLY the same system. If the mild container is not included you can still make milk coffee by using your milk bottle or a jug.
