l am sick and tired of spending lots of money on a can opener to find out a few months later they DON'T work
so what sort do you have that works really well
thanks
-
I use a hand operated MagiCan which I've had for years Nazar. My DD has something down at her place that I cannot figure out for the life of me (she has lots of stuff like that :-))) but even with mine which works beautifully, it seems to be taking me longer to get around the can than it used to. I am wondering if I need an electric one so I will be interested in people's responses to this question. I have the perfect spot for an electric one, hidden inside an easily accessible appliance cupboard where my digital scales are permanently plugged in.

I just had to reply to this thread, as for one, I love my OXO Good Grips can opener! And two I haven't been able to help out with any other thermy questions/recipes etc as my TMX arrives tomorrow, so this reply helps me feel like I can start to repay all the hints I've received so far!!!
Back to the can opener....it was a little on the expensive side [fifty aus dollars] but it leaves the edges super smooth (great for pencil tins for school -I'm a teacher) and is easy to use. My mum is borrowing it at the moment as her arthritis has flared in her wrists, she has liked using mine so much she will buy her own.
Hope this helps
-
I have a Tupperware one, we went through so many opening dog food tins but have had this one for years now, it too leaves a smooth edge.
-
Ihave a $10 I bought a K Mart. It is battery operated and you just sit it on top of the can and it whizzes around all by itself..

I second the OXO goodgrips one. No strain on the wrist, I've had mine for 15yrs and still works well. I talked my parents into getting one recently when theirs died and they too are very happy with the OXO goodgrips one. Here's one for $22.95

the one Magican for many years, and really happy with it.
-
I have had the Tupperware one for years, easy to use and leaves no sharp edges.
-
I like the idea of the can openers that leave a smooth edge. Mine is easy to use but leaves a sharp edge.
-
I have the Magican one, its good.
-
I have the Magican too and have had it for years, a lot of cans today have the pull lid which is great
-
I have a Zyliss can opener and loved it!

I have an electric one - I love it and if it died on me I would get another straight away. I have had it over 7 years now and it is still going strong. I would reccomend them to anyone. :) Can you tell I love my electric can opener??? :D
-
My $10 K Mart battery operated thingy . After it opens the lid sticks to it. I think it is funny and was surprised it even worked. If it runs out of Batts I will have to see just what the inside is like and what batts it takes.
If you are buying a hand operated one I would but a vey good one even if they are expensive at least they will last.

Gert
That is my kind of can opener ;D
The one I have at the moment is useless, I always spill the liquid from the tuna cans and I hate that.

We have a variety as it depends on who is using it. DD is very left handed, I am a bit of both and DH is very right handed. So we all sort of have our own. We went through lots to get ones that suited though. One of my favourites is the one DH had doing his Nashos. It is simply a hook thing.
-
That looks the one for me Gretchen and very cheap too. I had an electric one but threw it out as it was a nuisance to get out of the cupboard and plug in at my previous houses but I sure could do with it now my wrists are a lot weaker. I love ring pull cans too Yvette and wish all cans came with it.
-
Remember those old style 'spanner' types with a sharp blade that you had to lever in and out and would always leave a horrendous jagged edge! How I hated them. I promised myself that I would buy my mum a better, safer one with my first pay ($21.00 for a week's work in those days!) and I did get her one, but it took her a while to use it.
I also remember my DH's hook one from his days as a Cadet - I never got the hang of them.
I can't remember the name of my current tin opener, but it is a good, safe one, I do know that much.

thanks everyone for your replys .
the last one l had was a zyliss and it cost $30.00
so l thought it would last longer than 3 MONTHS since it cost a lot .
l would of returned it if l got it from kmart or big w but l got it from kitchenware direct online store and they would not let me return it ,as it was just out of 3 months since l had it .
so l thought right l wont buy from them again them if that is how there going to be .
l even since emails to zyliss company but never got a reply . so l dont want to buy online .
l am going to the big smoke tommorrow so will look in kmart / bigw for a magic can or a oxo or gretchs one touch .
thanks for all your replys it has been so helpful
-
Nazar put the thing in a jiffy bag and mail it back to them with a letter. Copy everyone from the cleaner to the president of the company. That usually works and is well worth the effort.
Every time I use my crazy can opener it makes me giggle, Just watching it go round is funny.

Great idea Gert!
-
yah l should of, but l was so upset and angry with myself for spending so much money on such a item that was completety useless . l threw it away in disgust when they were not able to help me at all
-
I have a Tupperware one. It's left and right handed, leaves a smooth edge and was the first item of Tupperware that even got hubby excited as to it's virtues lol. Everyone I know that's used one loves it.

Oh Nazar that's not right.
Zyliss can openers have a 5 year warranty.
I would be trying to contact kitchenware direct and Zyliss again and demand you speak to someone else!
What happened to your can opener?
Are you immersing it in water? Water will stop the wheels from turning.
I hope you get your money back.

well was l disappointed today l could not find the oxo or the magic can or the one touch while l was in kmart or big w today
was not meant to be, oh well anther day
rara no l did not immerse it in water
first the metal ring fell out but could still be used then it would not go around to open the can and would get stuck
l dont know if mine had a 5 year warranty or not . this happen about 6 months ago or more
so l dont like my chances of getting my money back .
you win some you lose some .

Judy, maybe your magican one is a little blunt? A while ago I noticed mine didn't seem to be as easy as it was and brought a new one as i had had it for a long time and the new one is a great.
-
You are probably right Medusa, it is very old. Luckily I don't have to open too many cans these days but I will look into replacing it.
-
don't get me started on can openers, i have spent 100s of $
nothing beats the old suicidal type lol
-
I've had a Tupperware one for years and find its great. It gets very little use these days because most cans seem robe ring pull.
-
It was the suicidal one I was referring to in my earlier post. I was absolutely terrified of them and so pleased when all the new alternatives started to become available in the 60s and 70s.
-
I wonder how many people had to have medical assistance because of those can openers?
-
Tupperware one here too! It's brilliant and years old and still going strong.
-
Anyone remember those can openers that fitted on the wall. I seem to remember the name Swingaway, but not sure if that's right. They were great. Wonder if you can still get them?

I've never seen one of those before Gert, looks good if you have a place to put it. Turning that handle would be so much easier than turning the one on mine. Is anyone still using one of these?
-
i did have one many years ago and they are very good for small cans, my tomato cans are usually about 3 kg

Go get one of mine at KMart. 10 bucks and hands free.

I looked for one at Kmart and couldn't find it. Thought it would be good for mum too who has dreadful arthritis.

I have been married for over 30 years and have only ever had Kenwood electric can openers - my first one lasted abut 25 years and i am now on my second - I would not have any other one - it never gets put away and is always ready for use.
