Title: Never happened before, shocking mash
Post by: Halex on July 25, 2012, 10:49:25 am
Cooked potatoes for 25 mins in basket. Then added to TM bowl,  seemed firm but knife went threw OK.  Mashed with butterfly, milk & cream.

Not good, potayoes in tiny hard lumps!!!

How can I make this to decent mash?

H :)

If the stock reduced that much Hally, perhaps it is stock concentrate now and you can add water to bring it up to the level you want?

It's only food Hally, don't stress about it.  Our tea was terrible tonight but no coverups here - what you see is what you get and DH ate it without complaint.  He must have lost his taste buds or something, I hated it  ;D  I'd stay right where you are tonight, let the boys wait on you and tomorrow a new day will dawn and all will be well  :-* :-*

Don't feel bad Hally, my first batch of mashed potatoes turned out to be like glue. TMX had been in the house for all of two weeks and I had friends over for dinner, came home very late from work and had to go straight to the kitchen to prepare vegies. Lucky DH had baked some lovely salmon and all I had to do was some vegies in TMX (to show off of course). I put too much water in because I was scared the amount suggested in the recipe wouldn't be enough. What a disaster. It was like runny glag glue from school.

Naturally I blamed the cook and not the machine.  :)

Hally, hope you re feeling better today.  You've had a rough couple of weeks.

I've never tried mashed potatoes in the TMX - I have read so many different posts about them that I'm now a little hesitant to have a go.

Hello Hally
What you describe with the potatoes I don't think was your fault.  It sounds like what we call glassy potatoes.  Sometimes when I prepare the potatoes I find that the centre of the potato looks a different colour, almost transparent to the rest.  If they are like this no amount of cooking will soften them. I usually throw them out and don't cook them.  You will end up with lumps in the mash or if blended little hard bits.  Sometimes only one potato in the bag is like it but if cooked will go all through the rest if mashed.    Hope this may help.

Marie

We live in a potato growing area so try many different types.  I recently bought a newly developed potato.  It was outstanding for chips but dreadful for mash.  we ate the mash with lumps but wasn't nice.   I think that the type of  potato has a lot to do with the result.

Most pink potatoes are good general use.  We pay between 50 cents and a dollar a kilo for potatoes from the farm gate.  Need to buy 5ks at a time.  Most of the farmers grow for Mc Cains and some for Mc Donald's,   Although most of Mc Donald's pots come from Tassie,  so I am told.

My DS went through a stage at about 8yrs old where he wouldn't eat anything cooked. (a raw food diet before it was trendy).
He only ate cottage cheese, tinned 4 bean mix and raw carrot, broccoli, capsicum and fruit.

Glad to see other people eat the stocks on the broccoli and cauli's.  People generally look at me strange when I suggest it and they throw the best bit in the bin.

I also live in potato growing area chookie and pay 50c a kg for potatoes.  Very happy at that price.  Also can pick up applies for $1 a kg but have just been told they are getting rid of the orchard.  Can't sell it as a going concern so they are ripping out all the trees and will sell it as land.  Such a same.

Just about to go and pick up a parcel of seed potatoes from the post office, will be growing potatoes this year in the garden

I did plant out some garlic bulbs that were starting to shoot a few weeks ago, and they seem to have taken off. Ive never had success with garlic before.
