Title: Healthier eating challenge
Post by: droverjess on July 15, 2012, 03:59:51 pm
DD and I have decided to try and do a healthier eating plan for the week's meals every week as we have a few spare pounds and don't want any more!

Would you like to join us?

I think in basic terms it will be more salads and vegetables, less puddings ( smaller portions) and cakes etc.
I won't stop baking altogether as DH would then just buy more kitkats when out. Plus we do usually have fairly active lives.

All ideas, suggestions and updates on how you get on most welcome. I will try to report our progress, or lack of.

We just went food shopping and were very good about not buying extras.
I have no idea if we can make it work, or if we are all talk. Will let you know.

Yes, I would be very keen in being held accountable here.  My actual meals are healthy, I'm just a terrible snacker and always seem to find an excuse not to exercise!

Getting up at 5am for a run doesn't appeal to you Robyn? ;D

DJ I am starting to do this for DS. He is nearly 8 and getting a little flabby. I don't want him to become obese. So far I have subbed grapeseed oil for butter in his favorite chocolate cake. He used to take 2 sweet things to school but I am now limiting it to one. He can take a cheese pop, and lots of fruit and carrots. Plus his snadwich. He is uncoordinated so doesn't like sports, so we will be trying to go for a walk every afternoon before his homework. I am hoping that will help him concentrate on his homework too.

I found a walk very good for ADHD son. He loved sports but I found he was very hyped up after training and it took him forever to settle down afterwards.

I have this issue with my DS, he has a sweet tooth and is very picky.  Most advice I've found says children don't need to lose excess weight but rather maintain weight and grow into it.  I'm hoping for us now that I'm making most of our food and I can reduce sugar/ butter this will help.

Oh cera thanks for the advice. I am glad I am not the only one with a fussy DS. He eats a lot of fruit (about 6 pieces a day) and is always still hungry.
I just don't poor DS being overweight and picked on. Perhaps I will just cut out some fat and sugar in my baking.

Dizzy, I reduce the sugar in cakes, biscuits all the time, or you can add pureed fruit as another option.

How about some little tubs of low fat yoghurt? Or you could get him some of those tuna and cracker snack packs? Or even low fat cheese and wholegrain crackers?

He is very fussy Amy. Doesn't like yoghurt, tuna only eaten in tuna mornay. Will give the cheese and crackers a go. We usually have that for afternoon tea. He doesn't eat alot of red meat either, fussy little bugger.

He loves the Quakers oats in the morning, might add some ground up seeds and nuts to that.

Hm, thats tricky then DG. Would he drink milk?

I don't eat red meat either :-)) Do you know how his iron levels are?

Ground up nuts and seeds are a good idea. Or you could make a homemade peanut or cashew nut butter to spread on wholegrain crackers or toast ;)

DJ we try to be healthy. I can say that now as my tummy is full from eating out. I did have lots of salad (I had dressing on it :'() and then I had sweets. Tonights dinner will be cut way back though. As it's raining it will be soup and a buttermilk roll from the freezer.

Chanel 10 on the Morning Show was promoting a new book called the Lunch box Revolution. Looked excellent, aimed at school kids - would love to have a look at it for me  ;D

I think it would be worthwhile to have a look. Also DG, can I just comment about six pieces of fruit a day?  It is a lot. Some people (me for example) cant eat that much fructose - can lead to obesity and prediabetes or diabetes. Can you substitute a few pieces with veggie sticks and home made dips for your little boy?

Well we had 2 portions of dessert between 3 tonight, fewer potatoes and extra veg. It's a start!

Trouble is the dire cold wet weather is making us all hungrier...... And it is meant to be summer!

DG if he likes tuna in mornay would he like a cheesy/tuna dip to have with crackers? I don't eat tuna but I think I've seen a recipe on her for a tuna dip, my kids would eat it this way when they were younger.
