Hey there,
Today I thought I would try and make some brown rice in the TM and use the Varoma to cook some veggies while the rice was cooking, I had 350grams of brown rice (macro, Woolworths brand, organic brown rice) with 1 litre of chicken stock as I wanted the rice to be flavorsome. However the rice took forever to cook, i mean forever, after 35min in the TM it was still tough and hard, then i tried another 10min, still no good, bascially after 60min of cooking i gave up. Do you get perfect rice every time ?? I followed the basic cookbook you get with the TM but it wasn't right :( Please tell me what I've been doing wrong. :(

Foodgroupie, I have only cooked white rice. This is quite easy. Quirky Jo would possibly be your best point of reference.

Did you cook it like this Dan? I only cook white rice too.
Brown rice Up to 400g rice in internal steaming basket, 1.25g water, 1 tsp seasalt 5 seconds / Speed 5, then 35-45 minutes / Temp. Varoma / Speed 2½. Turn up to Speed 4 if it bubbles up onto TM lid.
This is from cookipedia (http://www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/Thermomix_basics).
I'm sure there are people out there who cook brown rice often enough that they can give you some hints.

This was in an earlier tip from faffa: "It tells you how to cook brown rice in the EDC underneath the rice method. In the basket, well rinsed, varoma for 30-35 mins". Good luck.

I regularly cook brown rice and love it so much when cooked in the tmx. I usually put 1 litre of water in the bowl, then put the basket in and then about 1.5 cups rice. Cook for 40 minutes, varoma temp, speed 4. Can't remember what brand I use, but I've used a couple of different brands that I just pick up in the rice section at the supermarket. I've never had a problem.
I have no idea, but could it be that the stock has a higher boiling temp?
The other option is to soak it beforehand as it will then cook quicker.

I'll give it another try soon see how it goes :/ thanks for the tips.

Did you remember to rinse the rice first? It's the only thing I can think of.

I never rinse my brown rice and I've never had an issue. I think it's only certain types of white rice that needs it.

I've cooked it following the EDC and whilst it wasn't great rice, it was certainly cooked, I don't bother to rinse either. I've never used stock but can't imagine it would make a difference. I cook quinoa regularly, sometimes with stock, sometimes water and it is the same result.
And thanks JD for the cookipedia link, haven't seen that one before!

Somewhere on the site http://www.whyisthereair.com/ is a really good reference for cooking various types of rice.
