Title: Hi from Perth :). Need help/advices esp. with failsafe method to help DS focus
Post by: frazzled_mom on June 30, 2012, 11:36:50 pm
Hi everyone! I am from Perth. Mom of two very active boys, 4yo and 1yo. :).

I've just got my thermie two weeks ago. Still a bit overwhelmed trying to incorporate the thermie in most of my cooking. Hopefully by joining the forum, I will be able to use my thermie more efficiently and get plenty of ideas, tricks and trips by picking off your brains 😁.

My DS4 has problem focusing at school. So anyone with good recipes, tips n tricks to handle the problem ie healthy school lunches n snacks that will go down well, or any other advices in general are much much appreciated. I am very concerned and a bit overwhelmed. I dunno where to start. Will total failsafe food diet improve his focus? Can any moms with same problem share their experiences?? Is your kid formally diagnosed?? Where do u get a formal diagnosis? I was just being told by the teacher from time to time.

So sorry for putting so many questions on one post. Thx so much.

Hello and welcome to the forum frazzled mum.

My DS7 was diagnosed with ADHD by his paedatrician 2 years ago. Since then we have cut out all artificial colors and flavors. This has helped with his behavior but not his focus. We found Ritalin didn't really help and believe it is not ADHD but something else. Unfortunately his paed likes to diagnose all kids with ADHD and not look at the bigger picture.
DS has speech problems including a stutter and is also overly anxious and slightly dyslexic.
This year he has had a great teacher who with my input has just developed a special program for him. She thinks she has uncovered his problem. I don't know anymore until we meet at the beginning of the next school term.
My advice is to get a referral to a good paedatrician. Get reports and observations from the teacher.
Fed up website by Sue Dengate has a lot of information regarding fail safe diet.
The thermomix will make life easy for you. I make all my cakes, biscuits, snacks etc now.
Good luck
DG x

Thx for your replies everyone :)
Thx for sharing Dizzy Girl.

Dizzy girl, whats the symtomp in your DS for dyslexic? My DS likes drawings, but he seems to be having lots of troubles with letters n numbers. Other kids in his class already know 1-20 and some letters. DS is only know 1-3 well, and barely 4&5. I amnot sure whether he is just NOT INTERESTED in learning just yet. Or whether there are underlying issues here that need to be diagnosed. What prompted you to go to paeditrician to get a diagnosis in the first place??? I am so confused whether he is not interested in learning or whether he is NOT ABLE because he's got possible attention deficit? Can u give me examples of telltale behaviours in your DS that make u suspected ADHD?

The teacher said he easily lose his focus. And i did bring up the possibility of ADD. But the teacher said to wait a bit linger to observe. I am so anxious. He seems to be lagging behind his classmates...

Thx for all your inputs

I also really need some help to navigate the forum including understanding the functions of certain buttons, how to post replies to certain posts, how to delete/cancel wrong post that already posted, etc. Must check the technical help posts. :)

I wish the forum has iphone apps. The normal web view, instead of the view adjusted fir mobile screens, is very hard to navigate on your relatively small mobile phone screen. :)

Frazzled mum welcome to the forum firstly.
I have an almost 15 year old with ADHD, he was diagnosed when he was around 4 as well. He couldn't concentrate on anything for long at all and was all over the place with behavior problems. First step for me was a doctor who referred me to a pediatrician. I then was sent to a child development assessment place who diagnosed ADHD. We then started a trial of medication which worked really really well. I can remember DS saying to me not long after we started him on medication 'sorry mum for being naughty' I think this was the first time that he actually recognized that he was doing the wrong thing.
We have tried eliminating certain foods but never seen much of an improvement. He still is I medication now as he just doesn't cope well at school without it.
It can be a long journey to find the right solution that will help.

Hi Frazzled Mum, I read the forum a lot on my iPhone (on the train to and from work).  I use the Tapatalk app as I find it much easier using Safari.   I can't help with the other questions though, as I have no kids!  Good luck with finding the answers and good luck with your new Thermie  :)

Frazzled mum my DS problems started in kinder. He started stuttering so bad that he couldn't be understood at times. He saw the school consellor who did the WPSS test. ( I think that is what it is called). In that test he scored well under with motor skills, both fine and motor. This prompted me to see an occupational therapist. when I rang to make an appointment they suggested I see a paedatrician.

Since then we have seen psychologists, speech therapists and OT.

This year my DS complained about not being able to see the whiteboard. We had just seen his eye specialist who said he could see very well with his current glasses. I then asked DS why he couldn't see and he said the writing was all over the place. This got me thinking and researching. He writes a lot of his numbers and letters backwards and gets confused with letters like b and d.

We are still investigating.....

Yes. I will download Tapatalk tonight. Typing in the forum with such small screen, scrolling back n forth, up n down all the time starting to get to my nerves. Thx for the advice!! 👍

Yes i will talk to my DS teacher and try to get more insights. Run few tests if they are the appropriate next steps.
Just not knowing is the absolute worst. I started to imagine problems and exaggerate A TAD!! 😱
And to all the mums out there with kids that have attention problems, big or small, GOOD JOB!!! I know how trying things can be at times. I hope we can support each other with advices and kind words here n there along the way. 😊

I hope my thermie will help me greatly in achieving healthier, additives n preservatives free- lifestyle. :)
I know i am putting too much hope on the thermie that eating the right food will solve all my DS attention problems. But hey i am trying to stay in this bubble of hope (or self denial...?) for as long as i can.... 😳

Everything is compressed to fit my iphone screen. No more scrolling left n right, up n down!! A lifesaver!! Thank you so SO much ladies, for the great advice! Now just need to learn to insert link and add photos to my post. Excellent app. 👍👍

Welcome to the forum frazzled Mum. I think perhaps the first thing you need to do is to make an appointment with your sons teacher and see how serious your sons problems are. Itq may be that she is just voicing a small concern at the moment. The holidays start on Friday so I'm not sure if you will be able to see her before then. See exactly what she is concerned about and how serious she thinks it is. You will need to explain how worried you are.
I would also make an appointment with your GP and have a discussion with him/her. Tell them of your worries, be quite open.

If your DS was ADHD you would know it. He would never stop. Dyslexia is a term given to any 'learning difficulty'. So one child's dyslexia will be different to another's.

Is your soon happy? I would also have his sight and hearing checked out as these may be causing in attention if they aren't perfect. Young children often suffer from ear problems that cause in attention because they can't hear.

I've had a bit of experience with the above so good luck.

Hi, I might download that app too.  I just sent you a message but it seems to have disappeared altogether? So I have a lot to learn on how to use this forum.

Yes i've got his hearings checked. All ok. Not sure abt the sight. But i dont think that it is a problem. Since he is only kindy, and he can sit quite close to the board (no desk and bench like in older classes).

Yeah i am a bit doubtful whether he's got ADD or ADHD. He is happy most of the time, watching tv, playing playdoh, bike riding, running around the house, etc etc. As long as i dont ask him to practice writing numbers or letters or memorizing anything. For a time, i thought he is just the case of boys being boys. But when i realize how behind he is compared to few of his friends, and then that coupled with his lack of attention when i am talking to him. I started to put two and two together. I might be just imagining things .....

Thus all the worries and concerns, and the gazillion questions that i asked in this forum. Hoping maybe a better diet will help with the attention span problem....  Hoping maybe other moms with ADD or ADHD kids can help shed some light while i navigate through the unknown...
