Title: The Devil in the Milk - A1 and A2
Post by: goldfish on June 13, 2012, 09:03:34 am
Was just looking at Helene's ricotta and reading the comments at the end.  This caught my eye and it's absolutely fascinating . . .!!!

http://thebovine.wordpress.com/2009/03/20/the-devil-in-the-milk-dr-thomas-cowan-on-how-a2-milk-is-the-answer-to-the-mystery-of-why-even-raw-milk-sometimes-does-not-seem-to-be-enough-of-an-improvement-over-store-bought/

The wrong kind of milk seems to have a lot to answer for . . .!!

a2 milk is the only type I have bought for the past 9 months. I can't get enough of it and it tastes delicious.

I always buy it too. The milk I buy from my local growers market isnt actually labelled as A2, but it is jersey milk, which carries this gene. It is a little more expensive, but it tastes good and I think it is better for my family.

Althought we do not actually drink milk I do use it in cooking and have always bought Jersey cow milk produced on a beautiful farm  near where Robyn lives above Cairns. I really tastes good. It is expensive but well worth it.

How intersting
Well our dairy cow is a shorthorn.
Hope she is a2. Prefer her milk, and it is straight from cow.

However DH not milking her at present, she is out at grass with her calf. Usually we share the milk by shutting calf up in the day and milk in the evening then let calf out. She gives us milk, and beef and I make yogurt and learnt to make cheese this year too.

Will see what DH says?

Mungalli milk is lovely Gert.

I don't buy much and I know it isn't doing the farmers any favours if I refuse the Coles offer of a dollar a litre but I feel a a farmer is worth  all the toil he puts in so if I buy $5  bottle of milk and wind up throwing some out then so be it. The Jersey cow milk  from Mungalli Dairy is wonderful as it their cream and butter and Quark and yoghurt  and so on.

Gretchen, if you don't use much milk why don't you freeze it in small portions so that nothing gets wasted ?

Ask me that after I figure out  space in my new freezer. Good point though. It would be better  for the farmer if I did not do that but better on my pocket if I did. Is this a moral dilemma?

As my husband says,

we have to support the local farmers, as they support us in our business.

So I buy local as much as possible, direct if we can.

Maybe Gert but better than wasting it I would have thought.  Either that or just drink more milk - come on, you can do it - put some Baileys in it or Tia Maria  ;)

Maybe make more creamy soups. I had some on some cereal the other day and it was delish. The cereal not so much but it was purchased for my family and I thought I might give it a go as my son won't be visiting for a long long time. Cereal is one of the most disgusting things ever  invented.  Porridge is possibly ok but anything in a box  with sugar is really vomit worthy.  God knows what they put in that over processed crap but it tastes like nothing  edible.

I just couldn't read all that cos I'm a lazy cow  :D

I gathered that we should be drinking A2 milk (and I've seen it so branded in the supermarket). I buy the unhomogenised full cream milk. In a nutshell, which is the better of a two from a health perspective?

I had never heard of a1 and  a2 milk before but unhomogenised is better by far. Hard to get in uk supermarkets. Waitrose does it but don't go there often as much too expensive.

Local farmer sells raw milk once week and usually go there when our cow not milking, but he has black and whites so according to this likely to be a1 cows.

A lot of food for thought.

The stuff I drink is from Margaret River and I've not seen any other different coloured cows other than black & white in the paddocks as I've been driving past.

Found this extract
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15867940

And found than an A2 drink (milk) about to be launched in UK. I had never heard of of any of this before I read it on here and  it feels to be more like a marketing ploy?!

I can tell you as a farmer that different cows have different milk, and different breeds too. And there can be terrific variation even within a breed.

Be interesting tomorrow to see if either soon to be agricutural graduate and DH have heard of it. Will report back IDC

I always buy organic, unhomogenized but used to buy A2.  Love to support the farmers!!!!!
Gertbysea - I always freeze my milk and as long as it's not defrosted in sunlight - it's fine, just needs a good shake.

Thanks to all who support farmers, it is good to hear.
I shall buy milk from our local dairy farmer on Saturday and freeze it.
Raw and NOT homogenised just how we like it.

We have started w buying A2 milk.
DH notices a difference already.
We long to have a field again and our milking cow back from sister in laws farm.  Her latest calf is weaned and she's back in with the bull.

I agree with Gert about packaged cereal as it is disgusting and we may as well eat the packaging as the nutrional value would be the same.
Wouldn't feed it to my dogs.
We also support local produce and would rather pay a bit more than have produce that comes from goodness knows where and how long in storage before transportation.
Support local growers and keep them in business as the big 2 are trying to take over everything throughout the country .

We get yummy guernsey milk from the Maleny dairy when we can find it.
It sells out quickly as they are just a small dairy and can't produce enough to meet demand.

It is soooo different in a cup of coffee.
We bought some milk from Aldi recently and I couldn't drink coffee made with it.

I can remember when the majority of the local dairy herds consisted of mainly Jersey cows many years ago.  We had them on the farm.  Then the farmers were led to believe that Friesans (black & white) gave more milk than the Jersey and alot of dairy farms changed.

I can't drink milk in tea, the smell makes me feel ill. I can just handle it in instant coffee if I have to. I bought the A2 milk recently as I heard it's good to have a glass before bed if you're prone to gastric reflux. It certainly helps and I like the taste of it.

Does it really taste different? I don't like milk by itself and never have done.

We buy milk from Sunnydale dairy in Nedlands Perth. They sell un-homoginised Guernsey milk in glass bottles. It is sourced from a single herd.  Our doctor who has not been able to drink milk for over 20 years is able to drink this milk.

I find the taste is great. Even the skim milk tastes good and not watery.

I love to buy the Ravenhill Dairy unhomogenised milk, but unfortunately, they're closing down their specialist milk production and selling their milk to National Foods.
