members' comments Quite a popular soup
JulieO - Made this as I had already made caramelised onions earlier in the day and had everything else.
Used 480g milk and 20g cream just for a hint of creaminess. My only change next time would be to reduce the chicken stock granules to 2 tbs instead of 3 (just a personal taste).
Blue Wren88 - made it yesterday & it was just lovely...smooth & creamy.
I used half milk & half cream & couldn't have been happier.
CP - I used full cream milk. Lovely soup.
runnybabbit - I usually add some spinach and ricotta fresh pasta into the soup to make it a fuller meal. Also if you don't have caramelised garlic paste handy, we use Odette's Onion Jam from Super Kitchen Machine in smaller quantities, just takes an extra 15 minutes before starting the soup. Lovely recipe and so good for our budget.
jimgurn - reminded me of the lovely Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup I used to have as a child back in England.....only much better.
Moo 2 - I made it with the suggested garlic cloves and onion as I don't have FFS (sob) and it worked out beautifully.
DJ - Made this, it is a hit. Thanks. 3 portions cost almost same as 1 portion Heinz cream of.
Violin Cuddles - I used 3 tsp chicken stock concentrate and left out the salt and since we eat it with grated cheese and cracked black pepper, it doesn't need any further seasoning. It's excellent.
teagg - Really, really, really, REALLY good soup. I used just garlic cloves and onion. I substituted 680g passata for one of the tomato cans & water. I used two big blobs of EDC vegie paste and used some leftover sour cream with skimmed milk at the end.

Love tomato soup 8)
-
Wow, Judy, this would work out at about 50 cents a cup. Will try it as I buy Tinned Italian Tom for about $1 a tin.
-
JD what does it aste like, tinned cream of tomato soup or tinned tomatos blitzed with a few herbs & garlic.
Ds loves cream of but not the the other. This would be great for our cheap night meal.
H :)
-
I had quite a few tins of tomatoes I got for 49 cents Chookie and with tomatoes being so expensive at the moment, there is no way I would be using fresh. I had made a batch of caramelised onions so I just continued on from there without washing the bowl - it was just so cheap to make and DH, who is not a tomato soup lover, was seen licking his mug out :-))
Hally perhaps you could do 1/2 batch and to make it creamy for DS, use 1/2 cream and 1/2 milk perhaps. I would have if I had cream but some woman has got me on a grocery challenge and I wasn't allowed to buy cream seeing as I was already over budget this week ;D
I think it's a recipe that could be played with, some might like to add some herbs as well.
-
What woman, who, tell me, I will sort her out ;D
H :)
-
:D :D :D :-* :-*
-
Great looking recipe JD- I bought some 800g tins of roma tomatoes on special the other day for $1.50 each so I'll give this one a go. My kids dont like eating tomatoes on their own but love tomato soup.
-
Thanks Judy will give this a go.
I have a question which has perplexed me for ages. I quite often see recipes asking for 2 x 400g tins of toms (chopped, crushed whole etc). Why don't they ever say 1 x 800g tin which are readily available? ???
-
Good question- I don't think there's an answer to that. Maybe people stock 400g cans more than the 800g? I know I always stock both sizes.
-
Same here JO, I always buy the 800g but I do wonder why they specify buying 2 cans ???
Have missed the soup over summer.
-
Made this this evening as I had already made caramelised onions earlier in the day and had everything else.
Used 480g milk and 20g cream just for a hint of creaminess. My only change next time would be to reduce the chicken stock granules to 2 tbs instead of 3 (just a personal taste).
I only had a little taste as I made this purely to freeze in portions for DH to take to work. Really, really liked it and could imagine it going perfectly with sliced toasted baguette with cheese melted on top to dip in. (http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/ii26/ragdoll128/yum-1.gif)
Will be making again very soon, great recipe Judy, thankyou. ;D
-
Thanks Julie, hope DH likes it.
I always only buy the 400g sized tin of tomatoes, always when they are on special. It is not often I need more than 1 for a recipe so I'd be stuck with 1/2 a can if I bought the larger size.
-
Thanks so much for this recipe!
I made it yesterday & it was just lovely...smooth & creamy.
I used half milk & half cream & couldn't have been happier.
Served with fresh bread straight from the oven...what more could a girl want? :D
-
Maybe the kids would like this. I'll try tonight.
-
Made this earlier in the week and forgot to post that we thoroughly enjoyed it! I used full cream milk. Lovely soup JD, and will definitely make this one again :-*
-
Thanks CP, good idea with the full cream milk.
-
Had this for tea tonight. YUM. This is definitely on the keep list
-
That's nice to hear chrissa, glad you enjoyed it.
-
We've had this three times in the past two weeks. My hubby loooves it and we usually end up groaning on the sofa in a post-prandial stupor, in pain from overeating.
I usually add some spinach and ricotta fresh pasta into the soup to make it a fuller meal. We've just had it again tonight!
Also if you don't have caramelised garlic paste handy, we use Odette's Onion Jam from Super Kitchen Machine in smaller quantities, just takes an extra 15 minutes before starting the soup. :)
Lovely recipe, and so good for our budget, thank you.
-
Thanks for the excellent recipe.
This soup went down very well with my wife and children and reminded me of the lovely Heinz Cream of Tomato Soup I used to have as a child back in England.....only much better.
All the best,Jim
-
Thanks for the reviews runnybabbit and Jim - glad your families like it as it is so simple.
-
Have to give this a try, particularly if its a bit like Heniz's Cream of Tomato soup (which I love but is craZy expensive here compared to the UK)
Though first I need to get a hold of Tenina's book so I can make the garlic paste.
-
Hi ya rob
I didn't have the recipe for the garlic paste so I just added some garlic salt. The soup is delish!
I'm lucky enough to have For Foods Sake now and have the recipe for the garlic paste. So now ill be able to make the full version of the soup but it was really really good even without it.
-
does it need the milk? would love to give it a go but need it to be dairy free and not sure how almond milk in it would go?
-
The milk/cream breaks down the richness of the tomatoes fruity so I really think it would need that addition. Perhaps make half a batch and try the almond milk. If you use almond milk in everything you do, the taste would be to your liking and it should do the job.
-
Fruity, maybe try rice milk. I'm not sure the almond taste would compliment the tomatoes
-
Thank you, I am not at all keen on rice milk, but am thinking the almond milk wouldn't sit right with it. :((
-
Maybe just soy milk might be the go.
-
Unfortunately DD is also allergic to soy... just to complicate things
-
This was really nice -I made it with the suggested garlic cloves and onion as I don't have FFS (sob) and it worked out beautifully. So easy to make and I had all the ingredients on hand. Thanks Judy, this is going in my favourites!
-
Made this today, was quite yummy but too salty and that's my own fault.
I used chicken stock powder/paste from elsewhere on the forum (http://www.forumthermomix.com/index.php?topic=195.msg366#msg366) (i think this one, been a while since i made it) and used the same quantity, i.e 3 tablespoons (6 dessertspoons), as "3 tblspns Tenina's chicken stock powder - from FFS ".
What sort of quantity do you think I should have used?
-
Rob the stock recipe you used is very salty so 3 level tspns of it in that recipe should have been enough and perhaps also leave out the 1.5 tspn salt I have listed in the ingredients. Start low as you can always add more when you do the taste test. Tenina's stock powder is completely different which is why you need more but as JulieO said, 2 tblspns was enough for her taste so if you use this next time, start lower with that as well.
-
Just a slight salt difference there then. Oops.
So plan for tomorrow: make more soup :)
Thanks Judy.
Regarding taste test, my palette isn't refined enough to taste something and think "oh that needs just a dash of pepper and a pinch more of salt". I'm in envy of people that can!
-
Made this today, it is a hit.
Thanks.
3 portions cost almost same as 1 portion Heinz cream of.
BIG THANKS to JD.
-
I'm so glad the boys liked it DJ.
-
Bought 6 tins toms today @ 29 pence each = 45 cents Australian
Even DH was impressed.
-
Made a full size batch on Thursday.
DH even had seconds.
Only added 250mls milk, maybe my super cheap tins are runnier?
Still excellent.
Cost £1.05p for at least six portions, maybe more!
-
I made this today and it's excellent! Thank you so much :) .
I used 3 tsp chicken stock concentrate and left out the salt and since we eat it with grated cheese and cracked black pepper, it doesn't need any further seasoning :) .
-
I haven't tried this yet. Maybe soon as an iced soup. I rather like those.
-
Made this again yesterday, no accidents this time!
Delicious and cheap.
Thanks JD
-
Really, really, really, REALLY good soup
... Was the verdict from my husband.
Youngest DD gave it a 5/5.
Other DD gave it a 2/5 - but got upset when I took her bowl away... And promptly finished it off upon return!!
Thank you!!!
Regards
Gillian
Oops
PS I used just garlic cloves and onion. I substituted 680g passata for one of the tomato cans & water. I used two big blobs of EDC vege paste, and used some leftover sour cream with skimmed milk at the end.
;-)
-
Glad it was a winner in your house Gillian - it's nice to see kids eating soup.
-
Delicious. ;D Made it today for my lunch tomorrow at my upholstery class.Plenty of leftovers for future lunches ;)
-
It does make a lot CC, I think I still have 1 pack in the freezer. Glad you enjoyed it.
-
I made this tonight, but it didn't turn out well. It ended up with white specks through, which really affected the texture of the soup, too. Any ideas on what I might have done wrong? I used fat free milk that was fine, and as far as I know all the other ingredients were fine, too.
It had a bit of an aftertaste that I didn't really like, but I think that it may have been the mushrooms in the stock powder (it could also have been mind over matter, as I didn't like the smell) so I'm going to make another batch without the dried mushrooms during the week.
-
Try half cream, half milk jaiodai and see if that makes a difference.
-
Thanks JD. Should I use full cream milk, or is no-fat OK?
-
Whatever you normally use jakodai.
-
I made this today and it was lovely. I was in a rush, so I took some out for my lunch half way through cooking (I let the rest cook for the whole time). It tasted so lovely like this I didn't even end up adding the milk at the end. My son tasted it and wants it for dinner tonight.
Thanks for the recipe.
-
My pleasure Tam, glad you enjoyed it.
-
Just made it, DELISH!!!!!
-
Thanks thermojunkie.
